#resiliencechat With spring around the corner, I thought it would be a good time to consider some of the approaches that we might use to #renew#refresh#recommit to our personal #resilience and in developing #resilience of our students in class, in our schools, in our lives
A1 #resiliencechat For me, it's a time where we start the conclusion of one year, are building concepts and ideas for next year, and review, reflect on practices that are either making a difference, or not.
Twitter is a bit slos for me as well tonight, but please hang in there on #resiliencechat
Please let us know if you join us, and where you are from. We use a standard Q1 and A1 process for responses to track the conversation.
A1) Senioritis. Being restless learning inside. Spring means growth but somehow that's not what's conjured up in my mind when it comes to education! #resiliencechat
Q2 #resiliencechat As #spring approaches we think of new buds, new growth, and new life, What types of activities do you think we should focus on in our classes with students, for students, to help them reasses, and plan for their future growth?
A1: #resiliencechat When I think of Spring, I think of a time for self-reflection and a wrap-up of the content from the year: A time of wrap-up and reflection. #PSUElemEd
True, I think there are many perspectives that we are truly working with in our systems. And, those perspectives surely vary depending on the students in our classes, and what their next steps may be. #resiliencechat

#Resiliencechat#Reflection is such an important concept. If there is no reflection how can we ever determine if what we are doing makes a difference in the lives of our children. This is so important!
A1: #resiliencechat When I think of Spring, I think of a time for self-reflection and a wrap-up of the content from the year: A time of wrap-up and reflection. #PSUElemEd
A2: #resiliencechat I am a firm believer in goal setting so I think that goal books are a great way to inspire students to reach their maximum potential. Reflecting on what they did well, what they need to improve upon, and what they wish for themselves going forward #PSUElemEd
A2: focusing on helping them develop quality self reflection, are they accurate in understanding what they know, and more importantly what they do not yet know #resiliencechat
Yes, #Resiliencechat I've heard this referred to as sprial learning. That way a concept that might have been introduced on one level, might gain traction in a studnt's mind, and have more meaning to them.
A2: team building! It gets them up and moving and building relationships. Depending on the activity it can also get them to evaluate themselves. #resiliencechat
Q2 #resiliencechat As #spring approaches we think of new buds, new growth, and new life, What types of activities do you think we should focus on in our classes with students, for students, to help them reasses, and plan for their future growth?
Q3 #resiliencechat In the spring we often see renewal in our gardens, How might we extend this concept to students so that they may renew their approaches, their motivation, their desire to learn, their goal building, their empowerment to extend their learning?
#Resiliencechat Yes, if the self-reflection is not based on accurate data, there may be limited opportunity to grow. How might we help a student accurately assess themselves?
A2: focusing on helping them develop quality self reflection, are they accurate in understanding what they know, and more importantly what they do not yet know #resiliencechat
Funny, spring marks the end experience of the academic year, when it's a time of rebirth. You could argue that's why we call graduation a "commencement," so I think the academic spring should start looking toward the next year. #resiliencechat
Q2 #resiliencechat As #spring approaches we think of new buds, new growth, and new life, What types of activities do you think we should focus on in our classes with students, for students, to help them reasses, and plan for their future growth?
A3: It’s already been said but I think self reflection and the reminder that we can always learn new things and change who we are. It’s always possible to make better choices and become a better person. #resiliencechat
Q3 #resiliencechat In the spring we often see renewal in our gardens, How might we extend this concept to students so that they may renew their approaches, their motivation, their desire to learn, their goal building, their empowerment to extend their learning?
So true, for most of our students, we hope that the end in sight, is simply a new beginning, and if they gain this perspective, the changes could lead to more focused growth, goal attainment for them. While a year ends, life continues! #resiliencechat

A3: Uncover transfer between older material to allow students to recount on what they have learned & look at it in a slightly different light. Ask students to develop plans of approach for themselves and have high standards for them #resiliencechat#PSUElemEd
Q4: #resiliencechat
Spring also offers an opportunity to #refresh
How can we help our students, each other, our colleagues, take a pause, and #refresh themselves? I mean, sometimes, this work can be hard, and if we don't #refresh, we can simply get drained! Thoughts?
A4: Give breaks to students if you see that they are losing focus on the subjeft. Or like one of my teachers does make sure everyone can hear you (ie yell until they seem to be paying attention) #resiliencechat
Q4: #resiliencechat Dive into a good book. Something educational as in a book group with other educators or anything like that. This can be a good way to de-stress while also staying sharp and learning new skills #PSUElemEd
#resiliencechat Give students choice. Performance tasks that students can have a say in and that they enjoy will be much more beneficial to both their education and their mental health.
Great perspective! #Resiliencechat
I think my friend @burgessdave would say you are absolutely on point! Give students an amazing experience, and they will give us amazing results! Right Dave!
This is so #IMPORTANT
A4: Give then breaks! Find time to laugh with them. Get to know them outside of their academics as a person. It’s refreshing when Ss know that someone really truly cares for them. #resiliencechat

#resiliencechat Another option is a #Redo
We must remember that each and every day we can assist our students with a new idea, a new option, a new thought, and no one has to be stuck in a rut.
Q5 How can we assist students with having a #redo? Failing is part of learning!
#Resiliencechat#Absolutely You are speaking my language. Build the relationship, be authentic in your desire to learn about your students, and ensure that they know that you care. Connecting as a person is so important!

Give students ways to correct their mistakes. My biology teacher @QuintenVoyce let's students who didn't get all the points in a test get half points back when doing test corrections! #resiliencechat
A5: Give students ways to correct their mistakes. My biology teacher @QuintenVoyce let's students who didn't get all the points in a test get half points back when doing test corrections! #resiliencechat
A5: ensure they are not over reviewing the material they already handled, focusing on increasing clarity with still to be mastered content #resiliencechat
Q5: #resiliencechat A Redo is a large part of competency based learning. Give students proper supports such as extra practice, one on one time, after or before school help, extra resources, etc. Allow a redo & take time to make sure students know info before moving on #PSUElemEd

These are wonderful strategies to implement in all classes. Quite frankly you are speaking about providing #access#equity, and ensuring that students have what they need to succeed! I love it! #resiliencechat

Q6 #resiliencechat
We have been speaking a bit about #goals, and a process to #renew. What types of strategies might be useful is assisting our students with #recommiting to their goals, determining the adjustments needed, or in resetting goals that are relevant to them?
A5: Review the goals they set at the beginning of he year with them. Then, Help them self evaluate by asking questions. What do you want? What are you doing to get it? Is it working? What can you do different? What WILL you do? #resiliencechat

A6 #resiliencechat
I think that as we build relationships with students, and learn about their goals, we can provide reflective guidance, with being directive that can support their personal process of choosing their desired outcomes. If they can visualize their goals it is real
A6: We should use GPA or Goal Plan Action. Make students write out what their goal is and be specific, write out a plan for your goal and finally write out what your action will be. I learned this concept from my CR teachr, Mrs. Staggs #resiliencechat
A6: #resiliencechat Frequent check-ins with students can help to keep them on track. Communication is key. They should know where they stand and should be aware of where they should be. Letting kids assess their own progress is important. #PSUElemEd
#Resiliencechat Great strategy, sometimes having a few key steps and being committed to those steps provides a great deal of structure, guidance, and support in getting things done! Great lesson! Thanks for sharing this Jacob! @JacobFFSUSD
