Q1: Clear expectations are critical to good classroom management. What classroom management strategies / rules do you use in your classes? Share resources if possible. #espechat
Try to keep my expectations limited. K-3:
1) Listen to the teacher
2) Follow Directions
3) Try Your Best
Add a few more for the older Students
#espechat
A1: We begin and end class in the same squads/lines. If I need their attention I ask them to "give me your eyes" and they clap twice in response. That was new to me this year and it seems to work well. #espechat
A1: I've been using @thepespecialist self assessment posters to help students recognize the type of choices they're making. tapping with their teacher there to pick them up has been very helpful! #espechat
A1 My students repeat nearly EVERYTHING I say, helps keep students with me and engaged. Also helps some processing and understanding directions. or "share what I said with someone near you in your own words" #espechat
I like to talk quietly and ask Ss to touch their heads, touch their knees, touch their ears, clap once, pretend you are a dog, pretend you are a dinosaur... Stop, that scared me. They all laugh. #espechat
Hi! I'm a little late to the party, but I'm Becca, a future teacher from NC State! #espechat A1- while I haven't actually been in classroom setting yet I believe setting clear expectations beforehand are crucial to success
I like to talk quietly and ask Ss to touch their heads, touch their knees, touch their ears, clap once, pretend you are a dog, pretend you are a dinosaur... Stop, that scared me. They all laugh. #espechat
A1 1.Start &End class quietly
2.Follow directions /listen when the Ts is talking
3.Respect peers,yourself, and the teachers
4.Take care of equipment
5.#espechat
A1 Our School follows PBIS with 4 schoolwide rules: Prepare to Work
Always Obey Adults
Walk Quietly
Show Respect
We know how to follow our PAWS #espechat
Q2: Can you give an example of something that has or hasn't worked well? Why do you think something works or doesn't work in different settings? #espechat
A2) Have things not work all the time. Some of the time is bad directions on my part. #espechat Sometimes I need to provide example, not just directions.
A2 I have a fourth grade class that doesn’t stop talking. I’ve sat them out I’ve had discussions with them about respect and listening, I’ve done wait time nothing has work yet. #ESPEchat
A2 I have a fourth grade class that doesn’t stop talking. I’ve sat them out I’ve had discussions with them about respect and listening, I’ve done wait time nothing has work yet. #ESPEchat
A2 - haha twitter was nice to give us 280 characters but for soemthing that doesnt work Id need 28282929 characters, I can go on forever. Just bring your best to my community and it wont work! #espechat but does not work because class size, time of day (after lunch..) YIKES
A2 Our Work it Out/Conflict Corner has always been successful even with the youngest ones. Learning how to TALK things out with each other, such an important skill. #espechat
I have gone to classroom T and we together to a blurt tally. If Ss blurt or talk out of turn, Ts get a point. If they are able to stay under a certain number, a reward is given. #espechat
Q2- Continued.. what works.. things that are engaging! Holds students accountable. Proprioceptive things. Feel and touch makes a difference also! #espechat
A2: I once had students come in the gym and start jogging right away, but I found it hard to get their attention and develop relationships that way. I prefer to start and set the expectation for the day. #espechat
I think this is a new trend in generations. Kids just don't care. It's disheartening but I have had classes finally get out of that stage.... #espechat
I want to scream this to everyone!! esp to myself sometimes! we really do all work through the same things. twitter doesn't always show that! #espechat
I started an idea with a few of my difficult students last week. If you are going to talk during instructions I'm going to have you stand away from the group. Then, when you are ready to listen you can come talk to me. Haven't used it yet but they were receptive. #espechat
We only show the "good things" on Twitter. I went to observe a very respected teacher last year and realized she was talking over students too. #espechat
Sorry to hear its your fourth grade class.. sounds like my 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th.. ONLY 8th listens SHOCKENLY.. but also its the only class SOLO and only has 17 kids in it #espechat. Small class sizes BIG DIFFERENCE!
A2: I'm a camp counselor during the summertime we have dance parties when campers are stuck in the cabin during bad weather, it gets them to let loose and get some of their "cabin fever" out!
A2 I have students sit out and do work instead and take it home to get signed and I attached why they sat out. Not only students who don’t care parents either. #espechat
A2 what doesn’t work well is standing in between your S’s during instruction. Standing on the perimeter gives you the view of the entire class. #espechat
A2 sometimes when I have the older ss walk the court because they cant stop talking it doesnt work becuase kids just sit or when I have them right PE rules and they only have 3 of them and they have been sitting there for 15 mins #espechat
I have a stop sign posted on the wall where I send kids to re-focus. Seems to work for some but not all. #espechat Hi Guys, sorry I’m late! Braden Verge here and I teach in Salem,NH
I explained it to them last week. Basically told them I didn't want to keep getting frustrated and having to fight them on this. I want them to do well but want everyone else to follow directions also. #espechat
A3 Yes they can. Not all S’s will respond to the same procedures and routines. You have to try different techniques and strategies to see what works.#espechat
A3- teaching is all about differentiation right... so it can be in the aspect as classroom management also! But... I think one standard for all should be in place or atleast try to enforce it #espechat.
A3: #espechat I believe helping your students succeed in any way possible, even if that means switching up your expectations to meet the needs of all students individually
A3 Each class is so different but we try to keep expectations the same. Life skills being taught. Sometimes life doesn’t change things just for you...don’t miss the bus/plane😳 #espechat
A3- teaching is all about differentiation right... so it can be in the aspect as classroom management also! But... I think one standard for all should be in place or atleast try to enforce it #espechat.
A3: They almost have to be altered for certain students. I wish I had all the same expectations for my students, but with some it may be asking too much. I have to realize that even if they're struggling a bit, they may be trying harder than usual. #espechat
You have to get used to that. I get frustrated that I e-mail or call the same parents all the time with concerns and nothing changes. We can't win but we have to keep trying. #espechat
I also started talking with parents about students making bad decisions. I ask, what works for you at home and it changes the tone of the rest of the conversation. No longer am I coming down on the parent but wanting help. #espechat
I might try that @SaraWoodPE .. I got accused of SCREAMING at my class.. kid complained to the principal... she questioned me and I told her to come to the gym. Try and talk over 60 kids.. its a pe voice and being assertive and stern...SILENCE AND CRICKETS #Winning#espechat
A3: We have no idea what students go home to... screaming, neglect, love. How can we not differentiate the interaction with them? #espechat Its all about building a relationship
A4: when they start losing it, I get out WOW tickets, write one up for a student who is sitting quietly. I also ask everyone to think about if their choices are WOW or not #espechat
A4: I want to try the conflict corner but haven't found a way to make it happen when I am in a different place for each class outside, and 4 classes out at a time. Something I am still brainstorming. #espechat
A3 my interactions with individual Ss is definitely dependent on what I know about each Student. That’s why building those relationships are so important. #espechat
A3: My rules and expectations stay the same but I totally alter the way I do things with each class depending on their skill levels and personalities. #espechat
Yes, especially the kids older than kinder. They need to hear what you are saying. Many times the Ss dislike me and the parents can get them to speak up about issues that we can try and solve. #espechat
A4 - call me cruel but when some students are engaged and waiting to participate but majority are misbehaving/ wont listen to directions. I foreit my lesson.. take out a basketball give it to the few cooperative kids.. IT EATS AWAY AT THE REST. #ballislifeHARLEMLIVING#espechat
A4 I wish I had a stellar answer, but it's the same old time out to gather themselves. I used to use "think sheets" but it became too much to manage. Timeouts seem to be simple and effective in my setting. #espechat
A4 sometimes saying nothing but “doing” is all it takes for some of my tough to manage Ss. When a Ss being a difficult partner, I will “step” in and be the partner while the tough to manage student is quietly replaced. They are quite shocked and baffled. #espechat
can you give bball as a reward at the end of the class? like "everyone gets 2 shots at the end, but for every warning, you lose a shot" idk idk just thinking out loud #espechat
A3) My expectations are the same for all grades, language may be different. I add responsibilities as kids get older. Seems to work... for now #espechat
Many "tough" kids are very cordial when you speak with them away from the group. Ask them why they are being disrespectful to you. Maybe that is the only way they know how to "be" #espechat
The only bad thing is that sarcasm can be mistaken. had a few parent phone calls on that one in the past... #espechat It works great for Ss who get what your doing though.
If they are being disrespectful to every adult, then the school has their work ahead of them. However, we cannot give up on our kids. Even if it feels like they have given up on us. #espechat
A4 many times when there is quite a bit of talking when I am teaching I will stop and ask “are y’all having a meeting I didn’t know about?” I even get my calendar out for them to see that...no mtg scheduled😳 #espechat
A5: I often have choice involved in lessons where Ss participate and a level that challenges them. I also have Ss tell me what brings them joy. #espechat
A5 This can be difficult if they are having a bad day or going through a rough patch. I try to show excitement and how what we are doing will make them feel better. #espechat
A4) I started using ClassDojo to connect with parents on the positives and negatives in class and it has been awesome! I have my 3 strike policy, and I like to use the term physical edutainment to keep the class light and fun! #espechat
A5: I often let non-participants have time to watch what we are doing and join us when they are ready. or telling a student "I will come back in 2 minutes to talk to you" usually they get in without an issue. #espechat
A5 I have changed what I teach and how. I finally got projector and created different activities and gathered new things from my twitter friends. #espechat
A5 - ENTHUSIASM.. I participate.. challenge by choice (my favorite) explain the WHY!!!! Participate appropriately- Talk SAFETY constantly and the REALITY of what could happen from nonsense #espechat
A5: I am thankful that I don't have too many of these issues, as my Ss like to participate in most things. Grades with the older ones make a diff. and emphasizing growth mindset has made a diff. this year. #espechat
A5 Interview I had over the summer question was "what do you do when kids don't want to play or participate?" I was stunned tbh. never really had that issue... it's PE! #espechat
A5 I am also thankful we don’t have many situations like this. However Ss know that there’s always things you may not enjoy the most or even like but are necessary...I do not enjoy cleaning the toilet but alas...must be done #espechat
I agree. I always tell ridiculous past stories of things that occurred in other classes even if they are exaggerated a bit. Students seem to focus on safety then. #espechat
Like I stated, each kid is different. However, I would love to do a Google Hangout to hear more about this student to see if I can help. Interested? #espechat
A5 I also tell my Ss to bring an extra smile in case they lose theirs. If you not happy about something we doing then paste on that extra smile and PRETEND so I don’t get my feelings hurt...Show Respect #espechat
A5) Lots of enthusiasm (coffee-3 little ones at home takes a lot of energy)! Music- I play old school hip hop and will bust a move from time to time, I participate and demonstrate appropriate play, making the lesson relative and explaining the why.
A6: YES! My mood has made and broken my lessons. I am usually really good at making sure that my mood is good at work no matter what is going on my the rest of my life. When I couldn't I was amazed at how much my Ss were different and not into lessons. #espechat
A6 With new lessons and I’m coming up with they get excited and want to share that with them. They noticed that when they see how excited I am that makes him even more excited #espechat
A6 Absolutely!! Your attitude dictates how the class will go. S’s feed off your energy. We must set the bar high the moment the S’s walk into our gym. #espechat
A6: I like to think that I'm pretty even keel about everything. I wish I could say I attack my classes with an "enthusiasm unknown to mankind", but I just try to stay consistent. When I get too excited, students sometimes get a little goofy on me. #espechat
A6: Kids pick up on EVERYTHING! I was sick/exhausted a few weeks ago and a student knew it right at the greeting because I didn't have a big smile on my face #espechat
A6 read about "above/below 'the line'" in a book and have literally explained the concept to students. things may get us down, but we have to identify when we are below the line #espechat
Hi #espechat 👋🏼! Stephanie Sandino from Southern California tuning in late tonight. So far I’ve watched figure skating ⛸ and snowboarding 🏂 🇺🇸! Saw @chloekimsnow win the 🥇last night 😬🎉
Q6 - BAMMM MY FAV QUESTION.. YOU ATTITUDE CONTROLS EVERYTHING!!!!! Do not just show up.. MAKE A STATEMENT. everything can b worse, something or someone has it worse.. find the little positive and Fire away with that! #Espechat#Snapchat&Dance!
A6) yes and I also agree with @PhysEdApps where my mood can be from the class. I always tell my students that you guys make this class fun! The activities and games we play are nothing without you and your attitude #espechat
A6: Ss moods are just as contagious and adults. If I notice a class as a whole is not feeling it, I have changed the lesson last second to something more suitable. #espechat
A6b I talk to my kids about our being a family and how we know sometimes things not always great but we are in charge of our faces and our attitudes. We are not puppets. #espechat
A1 We are in year one of PBIS with the umbrella expectations of Be Safe, Be Responsible & Be Respectful. Each area on campus and teacher having 2-3 specific bullet points under those 3 expectations #espechat
Q6b it definelty does I approach everyday as an opportunity to make a difference but sometimes it get discouraging but I remember it could be worst
#espechat
Within teaching our students to think positively so that they’ll play better, we use @JonGordon11’s “no energy vampire” rule. One negative person can ruin the game/class for all. Elem kids love it. #espechat
A7: 1. Talk to Billy 2. Hear Billy. 3. Set expectation for next time Billy comes 4. See result and praise Billy or contact parents depending on outcome. #espechat
A2 Hmm something I think has worked well is jobs/roles! It allows the ss to take ownership of the learning environment. Definitely want to dive in deeper next year w/ the inclusion of my medical bench with non-participation cards to choose from #espechat
A7 I agree to remind of the schoolwide expectations/Rules. Also at our school no PE=no recess...BIG DEAL for my K-2. I also remind that do the best you can. That’s all I ever ask! #espechat
Q7 Ask Billy what is the problem and if he is having a rough day let him cool off then join when he is done.If this continues write a note to his parent asking about ways to help him #espechat
A7) have a conversation and go over the expectations of the class, depending on the results of the conversation maybe bring the parents into the discussion.
A3 Absolutely, or at least in one of my cases this year. I have a ss that NEEDS to move so as soon as he walks out of the locker room he’s off doing his warm-up jog (because he loves to run laps) until he sees us stretching. I try to keep him as busy as possible! #espechat
A7 find a sport or life skill activity they enjoy and work from there. Show them that many sports/activities involve some of the same movements and transfer over to help them become better at their preferred activity! #espechat
Q7. students are trying "group juggling". during, two students get into a verbal fight. while trying to diffue, students begin to THROW their juggling balls at each other. What management do you use? #espechat
Q7. students are trying "group juggling". during, two students get into a verbal fight. while trying to diffue, students begin to THROW their juggling balls at each other. What management do you use? #espechat
A4 I hit the reset button and either check for understanding (I may have terribly explained the lesson) or do something completely different. I’ve also taken the route of a heart-to-heart. If they aren’t buying it— i probably messed up somewhere... #espechat
