Tonight we’re talking about making good choices (to quote a favorite administrator). Our main chat will be in #flipclasschat. We use a Q1/A1 format. Please include A’s and the hashtag in your responses to Q’s to keep the chat flowing. #flipclass
another way to break the ice is to not use the terminology and simply plan a component of instruction that uses the pre-aquisition of information and applies it in the group space and invite admin to be a part once you and Ss are comfortable with it #flipclasschat#flipclass
Hi #flipclass friends, Katie from Allen TX. flipped physics now college level. Right now the colored leaves are decorating the yard, good enough! #flipclasschat
A1 Started as a way to help failing Ss in physics (too many). Kept going with good results and Ss getting to do physics instead of just listen about it. #flipclasschat#flipclass
A1 My best decision was to start flipping mid year my first year. I had a group of students that acted as both the control group (S1) and the experimental group (S2) I could better guage the responses #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: The best #flipclass decision I've made was to simply start doing it. Now I get to spend more time talking to my Ss, working through problems with them, answering their questions and I'm not "stuck in the front of the room" #flipclasschat
A2: I will gently push back against the Alfie Kohn quote. I've never been a constructivist, though I do like the idea of Ss involved in their learning.
I use #flipclass techniques to provide essential knowledge on which to build. Otherwise they're set up to fail. #flipclasschat
This is some eduscience right here folks. Control and experimental groups, independent and dependent variables.
@matthew_t_moore takes the subjectivity out of #flipclass!

A2: I struggle with this. I start the year with an open ended choice project b/c it is review. Then I feel bogged down in the Q2 grind but on the flipside I provide many resources yet require few so Ss can choose. But Ss need trained in choice making #flipclasschat#flipclass
Funny addendum to @CliffGoodacre I did sub-plans as I am doing a #flipclass training away from my district and I also cant leave a seating chart as the Ss don't have assigned seats, and the desks are never in the same place/arrang from day to day #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3 feeds into my A2 answer as Ss need trained on how/when to use tech for learning just like training/modeling for good edu choices. This is a year long process for me. Q1 is heavily guided Q2 less so Q3 more choice Q4 Ss create #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: I like to give students #flipclass flexibility. Ss choose where they sit, who they work with, even (partially) what they work on any given day (I tell them when the test is and give them a list of things to accomplish, but I let them choose their pace) #flipclasschat
Q4 How do you decide what is best to work on as a whole group, small group, or as individual Ss? Do students have a choice? #flipclass#flipclasschat (probably another big Q)
A3: I'm wary of using tech in some ways...I'm still partial to pencil and paper work (practice, quizzes, tests...). When solving problems I need to be able to see the process #flipclass#flipclasstech

A4 I start day 1 with pairs defined by random number generator for a project, but the freeform class arrangement means students develop their own groups/pairs/individ quickly. so much so that Ss rearrange the desks as they enter into their preference #flipclasschat#flipclass
A4: I always encourage Ss to work in small groups whenever possible. Being able (and willing) to talk in math to bounce ideas back and forth to support each other and collaborate with other people is an important skill #flipclass#flipclasschat
A5: Frustration...where is it stemming from? #flipclass has given me the opportunity to help students process WHY they are frustrated before addressing WHAT will help the frustration! More time = better rapport #flipclasschat
I am having internet issue and I was going to send you a nicer link, but go to https://t.co/vxnBqWlJ7Q and there is a step by step training of about 1 hour that will walk you through the definition of FLIP and one way to get started #flipclass#flipclasschat
Or completely unrelated to math (or content). Life may be getting in the way of learning. #flipclass has been so instrumental in providing more/adequate time to meet students needs - educational, emotional, and social. #flipclasschat
