Global #gtchat Powered by TAGT is a weekly chat on Twitter that takes place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT and 5 p.m. PT in the U.S. For one hour, parents, educators, advocates and experts in the field of gifted and talented gather to share resources, links, authentic life experiences and insights about gifted issues.
I’m Lisa Conrad ~ advocate, blogger, conference presenter and mother of 2 gifted adults from Pittsburgh, PA. Today coming from #2017GIFTEDpage Conference! #gtchat
A1 - advanced learner is someone who quickly gets new concepts and can make logical connections. Asks LOTS of deep questions - fixated on knowing more - esp when intrigued. #gtchat
A1 Impostor syndrome is believing the little voice in the back of your mind that you’re not worthy of what you’ve rightfully earned thru hard work. #gtchat
Q2 Meeting the needs of advanced learners can be a challenge! Tell us about your own struggles with teaching this population! #masterychat#gifteded#gtchat
A1) to me, it’s the lurking suspicion that despite experiencing success, you will be “found out” as a fraud somehow— that people may believe you’ve got it all together when you don’t think you do #gtchat
A1) “At university, impostors realize that there are many exceptional people; their own talents & abilities are not atypical. Often dismiss own talents; conclude they’re stupid when not the very best.” (Clance, 1985) #gtchat
A1 To me, an advaced learner is a learner, like anyone else, who needs differentiation to support his/her learning at their rhythm. An advanced learner cannot be hearded into a general standard. They need to be at their pace. #masterychat#gifteded#gtchat
A2) Sometimes, it can be difficult creating activities that provide the perfect amount of a challenge... You don’t want the challenge to be overwhelming, but you do want it to be difficult! #masterychat#gifteded#gtchat
A2) Impostor Syndrome can manifest in many different ways such as perfectionism, the person who doesn’t ask for help (go it alone), setting oneself up as an expert. #gtchat
Also, I’m horrified that I used embarrassment twice in that last tweet. Don’t think I belong here, I’m not really a writer, gonna go crawl into a hole now. ;) #gtchat
A3) Absolutely, we must always keep in mind that we must adapt our teaching to EVERY student’s individual needs in the classroom, gifted or not! #gifteded#gtchat#masterychat
A3) Consequences of impostor syndrome can be never feeling comfortable in the group, constantly straining for higher achievement or underachieving to fit lower group #gtchat
A3) Burnout, emotional exhaustion, loss of intrinsic motivation, poor achievement, including guilt & shame about success are reinforced by Impostor Cycle (Chrisman et al., 1995). #gtchat
A4) Family messages about importance of being naturally intelligent are assumed to influence ambitions and expectations of Impostors from early childhood. (Clance ’85) #gtchat
What do you know - "advanced educational stimulation matters for gifted individuals to fully develop their talent and actualize their intellectual potential" https://t.co/80wWIWcply Thanks, @PsychToday#gtchat
A4) Impostors have a strong need to please (Bussotti‘90); may cause children to alter their behavior to prevent loss of affection from parents (Clance‘85). #gtchat
I just listened to this podcast today directed to teachers but her advice is good for all dealing with imposter thoughts. https://t.co/GMEFVxk8wW#gtchat
The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: Why Capable People Suffer from the Impostor Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of It (Amazon) https://t.co/epw3Lqmfj9#gtchat
A5) Impostors set “excessively high, unrealistic goals & then experience self-defeating thoughts & behaviors when they can’t reach those goals” (Kets de Vries, ’05) #gtchat
Sadly, this perfectly describes a good deal of my writing. :( Flute playing/teaching I have a much better handle on, from years of experience. Writing not so much. #gtchat

@gtchatmod A5) The perfectionist struggles with fear of failure, just as the one with imposter syndrome faces the fear of being vulnerable to their limits. #gtchat
For many #gifted & #2ekids, impostor syndrome is a part of them, just a part of their wiring. Adults too. We gotta work with & around it to be able to function & thrive. #gtchat
