Heya, #WeirdEd! It's MARCH MADNESS and I'm... mad. Yeah, just mad. It was a rough day. But I'm here with y'all and I just played piano for like three hours and things are looking up.
#WeirdEd Before we start, please introduce yourself and, if you care about the real March Madness, give us your Final Four. If you don't, make up a Final Four
Hey, I'm Jana and I go to the Final Four every year now ('cause I just love my dad SO MUCH and I could get all "cool teacher" on you right now but if I'm honest my real final four is probably Anne Shirley, Laura Ingalls, Jo March, and Lizzie Bennet. #WeirdEd
Paul from Colorado, and I just never got into college sports, but I like to pretend that I’m taking a stance against the NCAA. Final 4 favorite Muppets - Ernie and Grover from the Sesame Street conference and Swedish Chef and Beaker from the Muppets proper conference #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Doug, 5th grade, bombastic rock star front man of a never-ending education funk machine. My Final Four are Jaws, Frank Zappa, popcorn, and fart jokes.
#WeirdEd The chat is homework again! There's at least three college students from Austin Peavy here.
Can I tell you how tickled I am that this chat is homework?
Pink. That's how tickled.
Frank Zappa is tough. I LOVE a lot of his stuff, but he was so prolific that there is a significant chunk that falls flat for me. Some days I find myself more in love with the idea of Zappa than the actual music. But Joe’s Garage is a masterpiece. #WeirdEd
A1 I could use categories of major historical events in the United States. These events could be economic or war related. Students could relate to these events since I plan to become a HS History teacher. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A1 That's actually tough, My kiddos have such diverse interests, BUT, they all do read Graphic Novels, especially lots of Amulets. So, Graphic Novels is definitely a Cat. Anime is another, for a few of the Ss. Food is another.
A1 participating in March Book Madness. We alternate between global-ish one via @TonyKeefer#2018MBM and an in-house one built from Ss top checkouts #WeirdEd
What is up, #WeirdEd? Dave, teacher educator in IA joining in for the first time in a L-O-N-G time. My final four is relatively obscure bands: Balmorhea, Mute Math, Paper Route, and The Accidentals.

#WeirdEd So I wrote some Qs for this (like always) but I'm not really happy with them so the Qs might be a little more freestyle than normal, or off topic.
I once tried listening to their music years ago, figured I would tune into whatever station they did -- except the stuff coming out of their mouths could not be played on any airwaves ... #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A1: I teach future teachers…so how about “crazy school reform initiatives of the past 15 years?” Not sure what the final 4 would be…but I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one...
It's cool to see how Ts bring the madness into their curriculum. Ss reading/recording selves for fluency & sharing vids w/ primary. Ss writing/recording opinion pieces persuading others to vote their way #WeirdEd
A1: We have the Questionable Snacks region, the Trying to Pretend You Aren’t on Your Phone region, the the Weird New Lingo region, and the Flash Games region. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I guess so, though I've stopped watching. I don't think I do enough for the "brony" label since I don't buy figures or dress up or anything, but I don't mind being called such. XD
A1: Brackets for best inauguration speech by newly sworn in Presidents... for best contribution to society by scientific discovery... best recipe to use for modeling doubling...and on and on.#WeirdEd
A2: So…”crazy school reform initiatives of the past 15 years”… Criteria: make teachers hate their jobs more, make students hate school more, make lawmakers ever more rabid…what I’m I forgetting? #WeirdEd
A2: Rulers by who was the most just, or the most exaggerated, or the one you would want for president today. Dystopian rebels by general bad-assery. Shakespearean Characters by most relatable, or strongest, or anything really. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A2 Decisions involving people/characters get judged by whoever would win the appropriate contest (fighting/dancing/etc) or by who's more cool/more wack/more wavy
#WeirdEd That's why I limit myself to like 2 or so series. My Hero Academia and Shokugeki No Souma are my current ones. Assassination Classroom also, but it actually ended. With Feels.
A2 Actions taken by a conqueror (who is craziest), how an event impacted development in and beyond that era. This actually has me super excited about random debates #WeirdEd
A2: For the Trying to Pretend You Aren’t on You Phone region, you’d be seeded based on how often Coach Brown raises his eyebrow Rock-style, sighs, and shakes his head while he looks at you. #WeirdEd
I was thinking of comparing greater than or less than, predicting how many words we could think of beginning with each letter (then testing it)...for class job, criteria could be by prestige or ease?#WeirdEd
I've been burned before...students had vanilla icing hand lotion...I thought there was cake nearby. I was devastated when I found out the truth #WeirdEd
I am striking Chocolate Cream pie from my list and replacing it with fresh pumpkin pie . I forgot fresh pumpkin beat Chocolate Cream in the Elite 8 #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd A2 Let's see. Graphic Novels: Funniest maybe, or Best Art.
Hard to do anime, 'cause they're either in the gateway (Naruto, Dragon Ball) or don't watch.
Typing club: Fastest, w/data.
A2: For criteria, I think maybe like a Kahoot game or something of the like? Where I have a game of questions and whichever subject has the most right answers wins. (Am I understanding this right? lol)
#WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Well, some 5th graders did. Tho only up till just inside the front doors, so none outside. Apparently, that was the agreement. I wasn't sure if I could since my 4th were in Specialists, I was prepping for lesson, & hadn't had class discussion
#WeirdEd Teachers were required to remain in class with non-participating students, or in the empty class, in case any returned. (which was supposed to be true for NYC)
thanks! y'alls ideas prompted this. my book bracket is based solely on opinions. never occurred to me to make it actual quantifiable victories #WeirdEd
A5. No. It was snowing all day. We did host the two 5th graders who wanted to do something and asked to volunteer in our class as part of reaching out to all the kids in school. #WeirdEd
A5(3): The whole school had a rally inside because it was raining and honestly sanctioning it took all the fun out of a walkout. It was SO "California" of us. #WeirdEd
Admin never really weighed in regarding staff, like @mrburkemath stayed to cover non-participants. Admin was quite accommodating for Ss who did #WeirdEd
A5: We were not allowed to leave unless every student left so we didn't impose our political views. About half my kids went; I'm sure more left in other classes. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd Lol, and it just becomes all business instead of something special... Which then begs the question, how could an entire school participate while still staying true instead of "shoehorning/forcing it" (which is the context I got from your tweet)
The high school students held a rally with student speakers and teachers were permitted to go. Rooms were designated for teachers and students who didn’t want to participate. #weirded
A3 I did not and many students did not. Those that did were respectful and only left for the 17 minutes. Some campus aides took it upon themselves to start asking students why they were walking out. Making sure they understood the significance. #WeirdEd
A5 or 3: No. I’m rarely envious of secondary educators, but today I was. I think I would have loved to watch young adults start to dig into the political process for the first time. #WeirdEd
A1: I could create a bracket of MG books and have the kids vote one which book they preferred. If they didn't read them, they could vote on which book they want to read more. #WeirdED
#WeirdEd Regardless, district did ask to honor Ss wishes, so granted Schools permission, would've loved to talk to the 5th graders/5th grade Ts who created that environment so they were aware.
#WeirdEd A3 My district warned us away from participating or encouraging. And (unfortunantly) none of my students brought it up to ask about it. Balancing act with district directive to not bring it up, but hope it gets brought up and let them talk.
Well, kids who didn't want to participate didn't have to. But the total number of kids who opted out was like 8 out of 800. The good side is we've had really good conversations about gun violence and what it really looks like in our community. #WeirdEd
I think this is fantastic. This kids will be voting age soon and I hope they utterly pwn politicians who continue with same hackneyed talking points about why nothing can be done #WeirdEd
Hey, kids who are doing #walkout s today: Getting in trouble is part of activism. Own it. Love it. Sit in detention together and SCHEME for the next one. Show the hypocrisy of those in charge. And teachers in schools that are punishing kids: Go sit with them in detention. :D
#WeirdEd That's good! I would love the convos as well, but bc of other responsibilities (DAMN YOU EDTPA!) I haven't been able to focus on those necessary convos....
Several Ts apprached admin to see if we had a gameplan. Districtended up issuing guidelines and starting students would not be disciplined for attending. Many of our students are active in social justice spaces, so it didn't surprise me when they started asking about it. #WeirdEd
A3.2 couple of weeks ago my class did have a pretty open conversation about teachers in guns. They decided they don't trust me with a gun. They might give me a taser. #weirded
How did your school/admin/district/authoritahs do reacting to student-led civil disobedience? How did they tolerate not having Absolute Power? #WeirdEd
A3.2 Not really? Other than voicing support for students speaking out, I feel like today was supposed to be more about listening to what the kids are saying. #WeirdEd
A 3.2b #WeirdEd
But later on in the week after I was bit by one student and punched in the face by another student, I decided maybe mean to having a taser would not be a good idea
I'm allowed ice packs though
A3.2 Not really? Other than voicing support for students speaking out, I feel like today was supposed to be more about listening to what the kids are saying. #WeirdEd
A3.2: This is an excellent article re: intersections btwn students of color protesting gun violence and privileged students protesting gun violence. I'm using it to give nuance to the convos. #weirdedhttps://t.co/IXTSGY0q3z
#WeirdEd Actually someone here who had a 5th grader who reached out to talk w/younger graders just gave me a MARVELOUS idea.... Instead of me, burdened w/inconsquential crap, did not participate, why not ask the 5th graders who did to come in and talk w/ my 4ths!
A3.2 I'd like to march for my life. I'm willing to die for my kids, but I shouldn't be expected to. My life is not to be gambled with, despite what those above me may think. My students' safety should not be dependent upon me taking a bullet, or shooting one. #WeirdEd
Last week, my AP stats class analyzed real gun violence statistics for about 30 unlabeled developed countries. Then I added the labeled. Pin drop. #WeirdEd
(2/4) Those who face gun violence on a level that we have only just glimpsed from our gated communities have never had their voices heard in their entire lives the way that we have in these few weeks alone. Since we all share in feeling this pain and know all too well how it

#WeirdEd Aww crap, now I'm way off book and can't get back to the planned questions. Time to improv questions.
*sings "Give em the ol' razzle dazzle...*
I think my favorite example of this was the teachers who were forbidden to talk about #optout , so they did a close reading exercise of the instructions of how to opt out of the Big Test #WeirdEd
Such idiocy & lunacy. But ppl I've spoken to about it who want to arm Ts reeeallly feel it's logical to do so. ?!!*f!# I cannot comprehend this. hurts my brain. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd some of my kids got confused by @CNN10, and thought it was Isis who colluded with Trump
Plus we talk a lot about @Malala and they confused Pakistan and the Taliban

Ahhh...close reading. AKA: I am close to hating reading. Thank you for pushing me over the edge by making me analyze every page of this book I thought I'd read for pleasure. #WeirdEd#Notbitter

#WeirdEd We took care of that by using Info text for research purposes... Hopefully.. XD. Also bc we used a SocStu text so we can actually use THAT during SocStu...

I legitimately saw this sign on the wall in a middle school hallway when I was visiting a student teacher. I love this. Also, it terrifies me. Also, it seems to sum up #WeirdEd pretty well.
Text selection is so important with close reading. I thought it was total bull until @readeologist explained it to me and then I opened my Bible and looked at all the little marks and notes and I was like, Ohhhhh, I get it now. It's for texts you gave to WORK. #WeirdEd

Grin. I feel your pain. Don't close read an entire book. Just a teeny section. Make it a treasure hunt, looking for new things each time. I sound like a cheeseball, but framing helps (both for them and for me). #WeirdEd

I feel like if I had this sign when I was a middle schooler, many office visits would have started with, “What? I was just making it ‘interesting’!” #WeirdEd
That's one of those signs that you look at, and you realize that kids have superpowers, and you wonder whether it's safe to tell them that.
O HEY LOOK @TheWeirdTeacher I brought us back to the theme #WeirdEd
Still waiting for an education thought leader to tell me that my teaching should be so amazing that students shouldn't want to participate in walk-outs. #WeirdEd

#WeirdEd Not so much. I have hopes for the second one, but if it's about Grindewald why keep Newt? Just go full Dumbledore. And recast Depp bc seriously, screw that guy

While I'm being tongue-in-cheek about the stultifying part, conversations about the social contract (i.e. "why we stop at traffic lights in the middle of the night") can be really effective with middle schoolers who don't get why rules are rules if they're good people. #WeirdEd
#WeirdEd I'm probaaaabbllly the most consistent College Stu who stays at the chat.... Then again, I'm a non-white, almost nontraditional Geek future Educator.... *cough*
No, I’m right with you. This is good stuff for young adolescents to wrestle through. Part of identity formation, moral development, all that good stuff! #WeirdEd
