A1: we run unbalanced shotgun spinner single wing. My outside tackle has to be my best lineman. For everyone else it’s a lot of man on and down blocks. For the Outside OT hes asked to do a ton. Lucky at the moment I have a special kid out there #HogFBChat
a1 #hogfbchat Don't really look at it that way. Center is important because he's the trigger man, but all spots are valuable, The best 5 are who we want to sent out there on Friday night.
A1: That’s a hard one for me to declare! All spots are equally important. I feel that we have the right pieces in there. But I am still evaluating. #hogfbchat
A1: In a perfect world Center. My center has to be smart, and know what the defense is doing. Recognize blitz and relay it to the other 4. Also needs to be able to move to get to second level. The hole line starts with him #hogfbchat
A1. Whichever position he best fits. Currently he has been our center for the last 2 seasons, going into his senior year. He is also our best Inside Backer as well.#hogfbchat
A1) I use to believe LT. But now, whichever spot they perform best at. Each spot demands something different & I don’t want to box my athletes into 1 spot. That way, if they struggle, they don’t believe all hope is lost. #hogfbchat
Depends. If we are a balanced offense like this year, he plays tackle. If we are unbalanced single wing we will put him at the Outside tackle to the strong side. #hogfbchat
A1: It depends on what’s best for the kid. We won’t force a kid to move because it’s perceived as more valuable. All positions on the OL have value. #hogfbchat
Jake Wertz, OC Bay City HS, Bay City, TX. Coming in a little late, just got done solving murder mysteries on vacation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Football Coach by day, Sherlock Holmes by night. #hogfbchat
A1: would have said tackles in past, but I think in our District, guards have to be some of best players. But right now our best guys are tackles due to experience and size. #hogfbchat
A1: tackle, always been one to think you better be good at center, better be good on the edges. Guards can be molded in the fire of reps and chalk board more so than those other two spots in my opinion. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A1 our biggest strongest dude, typically right tackle because we run so much power and counter. We've been running a lot more stretch so have been emphasizing the ability to run a little bit more.
A1: most often right tackle doesn’t have to be. Historically we’ve been a power/iso run team and right handed. Moved to more IZ and I like a little more push now at OG as opposed to OT. #hogfbchat
A1: Wherever I am.
Just kidding, I honestly haven't played with a steady group of 5 guys for awhile. My head coaches have emphasized trying to find the best 5 guys instead of consistency.
But typically a guard position next to the guy who knows the least #hogfbchat
A1: in past several seasons, we've put our best OK at either guards. Need speed, violence, intelligence to be consistently inside. Have put more undersized, but quick OL at center/tackle. #hogfbchat
A1: Different type of guys at C, G, T. The best guys have relentless effort, great technique, and finish blocks. Each are different per position. #hogfbchat
A1: Don't know if we really set the position. center has a lot on his plate BUT must be able to handle a nose. Would like Quick guys outside and BIG guys inside. #hogfbchat
A1: Don’t really have that in stone, changes with RBs and QBs strengths. I’d love to follow Auburn’s rule of the RG being the best for power and counter.
#hogfbchat
A1. All depends on the player, and what other guys we have. All about creating the best unit we can every year and making sure guys are in the right spot for us to succeed. No set spot for the best ol. #hogfbchat
A1) It depends, we tend to fit personnel toward what we do.
We love big G’s for down blocks and short pulls
Athletic T’s to get down the LOS and handle speed rushers
We love our C to be the best leader and smartest but that doesn’t always happen
#hogfbchat
Depends. If we are a balanced offense like this year, he plays tackle. If we are unbalanced single wing we will put him at the Outside tackle to the strong side. #hogfbchat
A1: "What's the best utensil in the drawer?" Depends - my G's play lateral & Vertical. C has 2 jobs, Snap & then Block. My T's work primarily on a 45 BUT in PassPro can face that "Burner-hybrid OLB/DE." All critical (All reading this 😀) - ALL the best ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A1: Typically we try to personnel our OL so our Split Guards / Split tackles are our more athletic lineman. It all depends on skill set. We run the Power quite often so... #hogfbchat
A1: center has to be very smart to know all of the calls, but he knows he is not going to be left on a island compared to that of our tackles. Spread pretty evenly across the front! #hogfbchat
A1: The combo of the two linemen. How well they work together to combo power, reach block, pin pull etc. If I was to pick one guard. But when you get a tandem pair of good linemen #roadgrader#hogfbchat
A2: when I was in no huddle systems, we had wristbands, so we’d check our bands and then make our calls amongst ourselves up front. Our QB would check our slide protection for us. #hogfbchat
When we were no huddle, we tried to get our OL to block Pictures. Bc we went fast we saw very few fronts so they just looked up and blocked the picture they saw. Wasn’t always perfect but Bc we went fast it corrected itself. #HogFBChat
A2: OL gets the call from the sideline from me, combo calls usually come from uncovered lineman. I'd love to hear how no huddle coaches vary their snap count and how they communicate it?? #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat As Coaches we need to stop doing dumb sh*t that complicates things for our players and starts to erode their ability to just be football players. KISS rule & rep it till you can't get it wrong. Can't have an AP scheme with remedial players.
A2) get play call from QB. Depending on the scheme, call combos and roll. At HS level we didn’t ID front or Mike to simplify and expedite the process! #HogFBChat
A2: Play wise our QB might just say the playcall out loud. Blocking wise we yell as we run up better have guards who are good at talking. (I'm a pro talker) #hogfbchat
A2: If we are no huddle (which is what we’ve evolved to) QB gets signals, relays calls (either protection or run scheme) to OL. OL make calls based off of information they just received from QB. Typically first thing we ID is front. Odd or even and go from there. #hogfbchat
A2: Been preaching communication everyday and want them all to be on same page. We have a window of time after QB gives the play to discuss combos or double teams and pass protection. No specific words just make sure we are together. #hogfbchat
A2: our no-huddle play calling is designed for greatest simplicity/directness for OL blocking schemes. Extra tags usually direct skill positions. We don't make more than 2-3 OL calls all game. Practice is focused prep for high speed execution. #hogfbchat
A2: Center has to ID Mike every snap. Then we make double team calls and everyone is communicating and knowing what terms refer to backside or frontside so nobody gets confused when bullets start flying #hogfbchat
A2)
Made up words in our lingo to match the calls, we also point, and call out tells of threats. We don’t care too much if they know what’s coming, we care about being on the same page as a unit and trying to execute
#hogfbchat
Q2: When we go no huddle we go KISS play and don't think limit the schemes but have screens rpos and QB runs built in line hears power we run power line hears zone we run zone up front if we do make calls I let the kids make them up! #hogfbchat
A2: Center ID of front. PS Tackle makes first call and it sets in motion our other calls and hand signals. Center makes the Point LB so we know blocking schemes on perimeter. BS Tackle has some hand signals we use to help QB with the read in zone. #hogfbchat
A2: We do everything either automatically or post-snap read. e.g. on a D stunt like twist, inside guy will make the call soon as identified. We're up-tempo and play FAST so no time for the "NFL-type" finger ID-ing blocks, blitzers, etc etc. #hogfbchat
A3: penalties result in after practice up downs or some form of extra conditioning. Sometimes it could be a bad call, had that happen before, but the non negotiable is a false start. Those get you “rolls” #hogfbchat
A4) Take my butt chewing from the head man and ask my guy to please not do that again. Don’t try to “fix” it on game day. Will make a point to emphasize it the next week in practice. #hogfbchat
a3 #hogfbchat Set the expectation early that those kinds of mistakes will not be tolerated as they kill drives, cost you points, and can change the outcome of a game. That being said, the more prepared and confident they are going in the less likely they are to make those errors.
Good question. That is why you go fast. It also could be a pass, option, RPO. We have the same calls for all of those plays. For instance, Green could be a zone call or a slide/sort call in pass protection. We block same people, but the play designates the technique. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A3 (4?) Instead of punishments and extra running...i try to ask that we could get the play call to them as soon as possible so can think about what their job is & what the count is. I think a heavy emphasis on footwork & body positioning helps eliminate holding calls.
A4: my guys and I have a good enough relationship to where they take ownership of the penalty and we go through what they could do differently #hogfbchat
A3: Offisides are usually corrected with gassers during the week. Anything else is pretty case by case. A personal foul penalty usually prompts for that guy to get pulled for the rest of the series. #HogFBChat
A3. We run MIB's (money in the bank) for penalties. Anything that become consistent or a problem will affect PT. Can't be the man and hurt us with 4 to 5 penalties a game. #hogfbchat
A3: personal foul means your on the hill and so does false starts. These are things you can control by focus and being under control. Holding calls if you are fighting and giving effort and driving your feet is grey and is under further review in film room #HOGFBCHAT
A3: if they are mental mistakes or stupid penalties, will work with correcting on sideline/film/practice. Holding on effort plays, we talk about, but I’m ok as long as not blatant and reoccurring #hogfbchat
A4) Don’t yell at em. I try to be positive and let them know that I have faith in them. They know they messed up. Yelling at them only tanks them further. #hogfbchat
A4: Depends on the situation. I am not a big screamer so I will usually talk through it. Like to hear how they saw it first. Have good communication with most so it would depend a lot on previous conversations. Selfish penalties are a different story #hogfbchat
A3) Good time for this shameless plug - we use plate carries. Player carries a 45 pound plate around the field depending on how many penalties they get. We also study why it’s a penalty. No sense in punishing if there’s no education behind it #hogfbchathttps://t.co/WtrJRN01AT
A3: Holding or false start equals updowns on Monday. We'll talk thru each penalty, legitimate or not. But regardless, focus is on @TBrianKight's #DontMatterGetBetter#hogfbchat
A3: Depends, I usually make sure their not so mad at themselves about the foul they lose control. If they can take critique I'll wanna talk to them about it before the QB tells us the play in the huddle. #hogfbchat
A3.) (it helps when there is an Aaron on the team)
Depends on said penalty.
-False Start/off sides- uncalled for.
-holding- uncalled for
-PI (O or D) I call attacking the ball #hogfbchat
Depending on the scheme everyone should know both sides at their chosen spot. Everyone position has elements & nuances that must be learned & earned over time, but the more interchangeable the parts the easier it is to make your adjustments #hogfbchat
A3 we deal with penalties in film sessions the next morning. And then keep a closer eye throughout the next week(s) to make sure it’s corrected. #hogfbchat
A3: #HogFBChat if it’s from a physical mistake, we will correct after the series on sideline, if mental same. Personal fouls of the unsportsmanlike nature will get you pulled for the rest of the game.
A3: Depends on the call and the situation. Never gonna have a set rule. Repeated mental mistakes such as false starts, will have you standing by me on sideline. #hogfbchat
A4. My guys don’t get punished for effort penalties like holding, I try to coach them up on how to not hold. But things like false starts can’t happen. We do 50 yards of frog hops for jumping. They wanna jump, we jump. #hogfbchat
A4: Most penalties comes down to these things - Mental Mistakes, Lack of Effort, and Technique Error. I'll never get into a kid for getting a penalty for playing through the echo of the whistle.
#hogfbchat
A3: pick em up! They know it was a mistake. They don’t need the entire stadium, their teammates and their coaches coming down on them. Fix it and move on #HogFBChat
A3?4 Get them focused on the next play. Most the time they know what they did if not coach them up and get them back playing. They are not allowed to argue with refs! #hogfbchat
A3: Keep your head. Next play mentality is important. Good memory, to learn from things, coupled with bad recall to not do them again. #SmartHogs#hogfbchat
A3 I'll get upset with the mental stuff like false starts, and I'll get mad at personal fouls. Just need to be very honest with them at the beginning about dealing with penalties so they know what your expectations are #HogFBChat
A3: false starts & personal fouls = running. Everything else really depends. I want them playing aggressive and not worrying about having to run. #hogfbchat
A3(4?): If my guys get flagged going full speed, within the framework of the game (ie: not choking slamming somebody), then I’m good, wont punish a kid for great effort. Personal fouls are selfish penalties, false starts are lack of focus penalties, which are no bueno. #hogfbchat
For sure. When I played in college, my LT, C and I would just say each other’s names on a particular play and we knew exactly what to do. Other times would just yell the numbers. #hogfbchat
A3(4?): Cont. - mistakes happen, flags get thrown. Correct in film, try to keep my guys moving forward, focus on next play. Playing with great effort won’t ever get you in my doghouse. Mental mistakes and lack of focus do. #hogfbchat
A1: Center. No question. He touches the ball every play. Nothing more crippling to an offense than a C who can’t snap consistently (especially s.g.) or who is drastically outmatched vs a NG, if he’s getting displaced back into the qb it’s gonna be a long day.
#hogfbchat
A3: personal fouls always agitate me but that tells me I am not doing a good job of coaching them when it's OK to be nasty and when they need to be smart #hogfbchat
Sometimes they make rules up. Or select the wrong numbered player. Once had a ref throw an unnecessary roughness flag on a peel back block. We asked what it was for. He said, “he hit him to hard.” 🤨🤬 #hogfbchat
A4: If we had the funds to provide them, each and every one of my guys would wear knee braces to help prevent injury. I really wish I could! #hogfbchat
A4: I think it’s important to start off with explaining that I think it’s key not to lose your mind during a game, especially over a mistake a high school kid makes. You yelling is not going to help him, unless he normally responds to that, which most don’t. #HogFBChat
Yes! Though, in-game I automatically pull player out for 1-play, since 2 personal foul plays = AUTO-ejection AND 1-game suspension. So I make sure they "get-it" about need to play above reproach in eyes of refs. Need them to stay focused & fast, but in control, aware. #hogfbchat
A4: I want my guys as protected as possible, but ultimately I can’t force a knee brace on a kid. I encourage them, highly. But if the kid isn’t comfortable in them... what can I do? 🤷🏻♂️ #hogfbchat
That’s huge especially if you have a double to the backers and you can tell the lb is cheating playside or even if it’s a stunt or games heavy team. #hogfbchat
A4: Depends on what it is for. Personal fouls really bother me because those are avoidable. Holding is a technique issue, I can coach that and feel confident it’ll get fixed. #hogfbchat
A3: if it's from being physical might let goif it's mental or after the whistle I'll let them know I didn't appreciate it. We set goal for penalty at the begining of the season if we don't meet it there is physical punishment after practice per penalty ussualy cures it #hogfbchat
A4: would love to have them if we could afford them, but it limits mobility. It definitely saves your knees if someone rolls up on you, but if kids don’t feel comfortable and can’t move to full ability then why use them if they cant preform to best ability #HOGFBCHAT
A4: coolness factor should be all you consider in this question. Which means 100% requirement. This is a good time to announce my teams new charity "Braces for Aces" #hogfbchat
A4: we don't have funding for it but I'd rather my kids had access to them. You don't appreciate what they do until you get rolled up from behind and it saves your knee. Centers know what's up #hogfbchat
A4: Sorry you lost me at, "if you have the funding..." 😢😢
But, unless they've had a previous injury, I trade speed for security in terms of injury prevention. #hogfbchat
A2. We identify combos. I don't care if they point them out. If we have to convert man coverage to slide them BST makes that call and all echo it. #hogfbchat
A4: Would love for all of my guys to wear them if we could put them on all of them. You only get one shot at playing high school football and I don’t want a player to miss a game if a knee brace could prevent it. #hogfbchat
Q4: Do not require, if young man wants to wear them great, if not, great, unless required by doctor. Whatever helps them to play with more confidence within reason. Just use common sense. It’s not rocket surgery. #HogFBChat
#hogfbchat If you have the funding to prevent injuries that could change the season for your O/D or even your team, I'd argue that it is at least somewhat irresponsible not to put your OL in shackles.
A4: Usee to be a big deal guys hated them so I make it optional. Had a trainer once told me there was a study that showed knee injuries went down when using but causes more catastrophic injuries to hips and ankles #hogfbchat
A4: I’veseen braces save so many knees over the years. Previous school we were 2 platoon team. All my OL wore knee braces. Currently several play both sides, and I leave it up to them. I highly recommend for those that spend most of their time on the OL. #hogfbchat
A4) I don’t require but rather encourage. I HATED playing with them. That said, they’ve come a long way since the dawn of time. But up to the athlete.
Feel good, play good (at least so I’ve been told). Beat you to it @Warhawks_oline. #hogfbchat
A4 Required. Knee braces help reduce injuries. We are blessed to have the funding to put braces on our varsity linemen. We also have the best training staff I have ever been around who makes sure they are properly fitted. #hogfbchat
Indeed. The ones I wore in HS were bulky but effective. The ones now are solid steel but thin enough to not restrict a ton of movement. I've seen them get bent & the kid walk away without injury. Tremble to think the injury if he hadn't worn it #hogfbchat
A4. Pre-snap penalties are all I really always get fired up about. Holding calls will happen from time to time. If someone gets them chronically then there's probably a technique issue that needs fixed. Personal fouls on a case by case basis #hogfbchat
As always, please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and tons of collaborations! It's like a free clinic session every week! #hogfbchat
If anybody has any questions please do not hesitate to send them to myself or to @CoachDingus and we will get them up on the chat as soon as possible! #hogfbchat

Many thanks to all of you for sharing all your knowledge each week! Made a goal this summer to learn something new each day. Mondays are the best days. #hogfbchat
Part of that is not enough people become refs (in SoCal a majority of them make more $$ per game than the coaches) & part is they don’t have any sort of “variety test.” #hogfbchat

Fellow #HogFbChat Coaches, before we all go back to our lives, I wanna once again urge each one of you to talk to your young men & women about sexual assault within athletics, specifically @brendatracy24 & her #SetTheExpectation campaign!
