Ryan, 8th Grade US History from Olathe. Finished conferences last week, headed to MCSS on Friday & get to see & hopefully meet, @jedikermit Quinn Rollins! #XPLAP
Hi, I’m Tyler from CO! We just closed our trimester so we’re preparing for conferences...no students yesterday and today, but enjoyed celebrating their growth and excited to share with families at conferences! #xplap
Hi there! Amanda from Tampa, FL. My highlight was watching my students plan XP, levels, and creating the story for our game to family our classroom for the second half of the year! #xplap
Danielle from SC - celebrated my daughter’s 9th birthday today 😌. Not sure how much insight I bring to this tooic, but I’m looking forward to learning from everyone! 😊 #xplap
✨Hi, #XPLAP Crew! I’m Kimberly from NE. My fave moment from the week was giggling with @DebDiToro and @LindaWilton after school today as we made a #DoInk video for our students using the #TLAP Costume Hook.✨
Another highlight....we celebrated our ending of the food truck race today with ice cream bar, video of all the pics taken, and reflection time. LOVED it! #xplap
Hi; Josh from PA, 8th grade ELA teacher. My highlight was today, getting to go running in 75 degree weather after school. In Pennsylvania. In February. ☀️ #XPLAP
Donna, HS Reading Specialist! Highlight- I had a kiddo say Visual learning!! Ahhhh she wants visual learning from all her teachers! Yes, I'm telling her teachers! #XPLAP
I'm Beth Bachuss and I teach Ceramics and Video Game Design in Alabama. Just got back from #AlabamaClayConference, going on a field trip tomorrow, and I have clay workshops Friday and Saturday! #xplap#shortweek
I missed my highlight! I am putting together a "Great Medieval Race" Challenge (a take on Amazing Race) for my students for tomorrow. The hype for this is already electric! #xplap
Hey! Day 1 of game research in the books. Students psyched and a bit confused after I told them not to plan out their games quite yet! This is going to be epic! #xplap
I really try not to stress. I believe in what we are doing, and am confident in what the kids know. Awful for those of them with test anxiety. They get so pressured! #XPLAP
A1: I always remind myself that this is just one piece of the puzzle. It’s not the end all be all & to focus on student growth from the start of the year to the end of it, not just test scores. #XPLAP
A1: Our PE staff does dancing with our students the morning of testing to get them up and moving! Our third grade team tries to liven up our mornings, we give it our best 60-90 minutes, then move on! #xplap
Hi #xplap! Little late but I working on my new (well updated) site! Official relaunch in a couple weeks, but now the proud owner of https://t.co/4GYFrLQPOX!
A1: Try to focus on having fun with the kiddos and not think about “testing” too much. Take this time to do fun projects and games which still review. Laughter is the best medicine! #xplap
A1: Celebrate the small wins and stock up on (day after Valentine’s Day 1/2 off) chocolate for the candy jar and coffee creamer..must keep the teachers calm too! 😘#xplap
I run and lift weights. It alleviates my stress. Talking to colleagues and being able to laugh about tests also helps. And I mean really laugh because we know our kids are better than this test will show. #XPLAP
I started a unit last week. After reading a good chunk of the book, I decided that a contained unit was a good start for me. #xplap
You're going to rock it, Louie!!!
I try to take the pressure off the students and tell them all year to just put forth their best effort and good results will come. I also tell them it is just a way for them to show me what they already know. #xplap
A1: I have started "Meditation Mondays" where we practice mindfulness and focus on breathing techniques. I also paint testing as a "battle" and we will be victorious. #xplap
A1 well, we play alot of different review games. I have made my boss battle game. We get up and moving. Throughout the year we do other stuff tonget the work out to the public like @NationalHistory#xplap
A1: I treat standardized tests like a brain sporting event. The week prior we do warm-up exercises to prepare. On game day, I remind Ss to breathe and tell them that in the big picture of life this test will not be the best or worst thing to happen; so don’t sweat it. #xplap
I think the issue is that I'm too much of a perfectionist and that I want to have the entire thing planned out completely amazingly the first time... When I know that is completely unrealistic.
What is the unit you chose? #xplap
We stretch, sometimes do some yoga moves before the test. I try to keep the atmosphere as light as I can. When I am relaxed, I think my students can feel it. #XPLAP
You came to the right place to learn. Just make sure you share your learning along the way so we can all grow together. This is my first year all in and I am definitely learning as I go. #XPLAP
A2: refocus the conversation not on what you “can’t” control, but what you actually “can”! No sense in worrying about things you can’t not change! #xplap
A2: I try to come up with fun activities & interesting simulations/lessons that might not be major parts of the curriculum, but are fun to teach. Last yr: my stu-teach made an OK land rush sim & did a whole mini unit on the newsies strike. #XPLAP
Sarah: Cornhusker State. 🌽😀A1: When I taught middle school, I made this video about “Mr. Magic Smiley Face” starring the science teacher on my team. The premise was that she had test anxiety-then she got a smiley face sticker which turned it all around. Oscar-worthy. #XPLAP
I hope to do so as soon as I start! I know it is the way to go! I can't take on too many new things all at once though... It's been a year of firsts for me. #xplap
A2: We can't totally change everyone's mind. But we can be positive to those who are not. Instead of jumping on the gripe train we can drive a new positive train. It is hard but then you go lift heavy and run long to release stress! #xplap
It’s ok to a growth mindset with your kiddos and say “this may not be perfect, but... let’s try together”. Allow them to provide feedback which allows for buy in as well! #xplap
A1 We use zones of regulation at my school, we discuss what tools we can use to get our bodies back into the "green" zone, of optimal learning. Such as taking an action break. I use myself as a model often. #xplap#EDCI338
A2: We read “Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!” on the first morning of testing. Students seem to understand that they’ve learned how to THINK! Also grateful for supportive families and admin that understand these tests assess small parts of the whole child #xplap
A2: I tell the kids the test is their chance to show how much they learned all year. My mantra during testing season is to maintain a positive attitude. I say it so much that the kids start saying and believing it themselves. #XPLAP
A2: Testing is a chance to showcase what you know! As long as an assessment is valid and reliable it’s an excellent resource for gaging present levels of understanding that can benefit lesson planning, placement, & academic focus. #XPLAP
A1: Remind kids how ridiculous these tests are, how they don’t reflect your true learning, how you’ll always have info to use and so on ... these tests are not you - plain and simple! #xplap
A2 I try to explain to students that the standard test is like a sports game. You dont go to the game without practicing. So we practice. Then we have a pep rally. Then we celebrate when its finished. Try for a PR and I'm happy. #xplap
Thanks for the shout out. Here is my gamification website: https://t.co/sHcFI0y8yG I'd also recommend joining the #xplap chat on Tuesdays at 9 CST and follow @mrmatera. He has some great videos on his YouTube channel.

Treat the standardized test like it's a common enemy. "Hey guys, I'm on YOUR side! Let's work hard together so we can blow this test out of the water!" #xplap
A2: I do a lot of "convincing" that those tests are not the end all, not even the start. I'm in middle school, so I have the luxury of saying things like "noone has ever asked me how I did on the 8th grade standarized test". #XPLAP
✨A2: @DebDiToro and I make preparing for the test a game! We started our Teen Lit Olympics as the result of a brainstorm to increase positivity and engagement!✨
#XPLAP
A2 did y'all know test creators are called psychometricians? So,my Ss and I talk about the wy these psychos are trying to fool them. Its all a game. They just need to learn the rules to learn how to "play" the test. #xplap
A2: It is important to articulate the value of standardized testing. While it is not an ideal measure of student learning the real world uses standardized testing as entrance points to major industries. It is a skill our students need when they enter the workforce #xplap
A2: I usually do a motivational video each day of testing. Sometimes Batman shows up or I record their other teachers doing silly dances. As a team we also write a positive note to each student. A lot of them keep those with them for the rest of the year. #xplap
A2; Music is a stress reliever - especially if you move to it! Right now on a bus from Astoria OR to Portland OR. Don’t ask. But this chat and Fleetwood Mac Rumors has me in top spirits! #xplap
Leaderboard, yo. Track data. Have classes set big hairy audacious goals beforehand. And celebrate student growth and big winners. Award highest score AND largest gains. Find as many ways as you can to set goals and celebrate them publicly! Maybe even donuts. #xplap
Q3: I'm new to the gamified classroom. I'm trying to learn. My go-to is hyperdocs, interactive slides all year long. I try not to change any method. #xplap
I have them get into their families (groups) and do review games for XP or competition. we've done basketball, shuffleboard, golf, flick football, crocodile dentist and boss battles #xplap
A2: I don’t have these in my grade but I’d reassure the Ss I love them, do the best you can, whatever happens in the end isn’t going to change who you are the great person you will become and then likely a lame dad joke #xplap
Hey y'all! I am new to Twitter and to chats so wish me luck! I am a dance teacher, a music teacher, and a grade one teacher in Victoria, BC #xplap#EDCI338
A3: Our data is showing that some kids are just clicking answers instead of reading / doing the math. I am going to give out XP for testing, and bonus XP for improvement. Might not help much, but I hope it won't hurt. #NoTestingInMyContentAreaThankGoodness#xplap
This is so powerful as it not only reminds them of what they have learned but also lets them know of the confidence you have in them. Double win. #XPLAP
A3: I’m going to offer XP points for “testing” and “breathing” strategies I see being used. Also, perhaps side quests could involve positive support with one another. I have “challenges” at each level and during testing I want to come up with some crazy test monster. #xplap
A3: I often teach my #SAT prep course through the lense of competition and sports. Much like an athletic event you have to synthesize all the skills you have and engage real time decision making with limited resources. #xplap
#xplap a3 attended this years #ditchsummit learned that gamification can happen in small doses, gamify one aspect, web off the doorway with "lasers" string they have to break in to get in
A3: Testing requires a lot of sitting still and being quiet. During the mini-built in breaks I have quick improv games ready that let Ss move around and chat. The Ss favorite game is called Splat! #xplap
My Ss LOVE my @Bitmoji but they r too young to have 1 of their own 🙁 so...I created a special side mission offered to 👨🏼🚀Pilots👩🏼🚀only where they can earn their very own Bitmoji image! Just 1 image sent to their iPad but they can use as a digital signature! 🎉🎉 #xplap
A3 the game plays into the prep. My review games are done through the guilds. For example, Dreadsheets are done in small groups. I can't really play with scores or work the final into the XP grading either. Has to be 20% of final average #xplaphttps://t.co/k4hwAIdlG7
✨A3: BLING IT ON! @DebDiToro & I OFFER BLING (XP). Bling can be added for personal bests, group average highs, going above and beyond, positivity, etc. ✨
#XPLAP
Yay! I'll be there too for Thurs and Fri! Staying in my daughter's dorm at PSU. Ha! So excited you'll be there! Would love to get a mini lesson on WeVideo! #xplap
My version of boss fight. Groups have special powers and fight a boss that attacks them. Boss, takes battle damage as Ss role dice to attack. All done through Ss maintained Google Sheets. #xplap
We do a lot of mindful meditation. We use @CosmicKidsYoga#peaceout series which allows them to focus their mind on a series of events. Ss can use this during testing time to calm themselves. #xplap
We have a couple days of back to back testing. I think it is critical that we do something FUN after the test. There has to be a reward for making it through. #XPLAP
A4: My Ss and I talked about this today with all tests. Letting them know that whatever the outcome I will be proud. I love them and they worked hard all year. I also let them use a rubber band during test to fidget with. #xplap
A3: Again I don’t but the test would be a boss battle, with exclusive items and reward tied directly to the test. Each would get a game currency reward for trying. Also, an entry into a random draw for each X % you earn. This was ANYONE can win. Good balance. #xplap
A4: A lot of student stress derives from the novelty of the exam. When students don’t have sufficient exposure to the test structure, timing and question types they tend to freeze. I emphasize that the more you prep the less likely you are to be to be surprised #XPLAP
Sometimes I reward the work that goes on before hand. Items/XP for getting a good night sleep, eating a great breakfast, etc. A lot of it is on the honor system, but reminds them to do those things. #xplap
A4 Give them time to reflect, either with writing time or partner discussion time. Greet students at the door each day to know if they need extra support that day (someone to listen, personal space, etc.) Give them to-do list ideas if they have lots to do #XPLAP
A4: I have a ISTEP PEP rally in my room the Friday before test week!! It's a relaxed and upbeat celebration of what we are capable up. I sing and dance for them which always makes them smile! #xplap
It’s official! My Game On! Adventures in the Gamified Classroom session was accepted for the People’s Choice #ISTE18 program!
Thanks to all who voted for me! So honored to have been selected & incredibly grateful for such an amazing PLN!
#tlap#xplap#leadlap#games4ed
A4 - I can tell you what I think DOESN’T work well (in my experience) - at my old school Ts made TOO big of a deal about testing - multiple pep rallies, special foods, endless raps - they meant well, but I think it just stressed everyone out! #xplap
A1: I like to prep students for ST through the use of the questions in a fun, self- competitive way. Ex. Putting three math questions in a triangle and playing a baseball game. Complete the base (question) that you run to #XPLAP#EDCI338
Here's one of the videos: https://t.co/Uu2dyvIsA8 The sillier the better. I play it right before they test and it helps relieve a lot of the tension before they start. #xplap
A5 if we've done it right, there shouldn't be any surprises on the HST. Ss can reflect on the year nd set a personal goal and a unique plan for attack. If they set a PR or meet goal, celebrate. Conferencing would be key in prep. #xplap
A5 one of the things I like best about gamified classroom is that it teaches them to be problems solvers on their own before asking for help. I think this helps then on assessments and givens them confidence
#xplap
Q5: We should be creating an ongoing culture of challenges for our Ss that showcase their creativity, leadership, collaboration, and successes! Leave the textbook and make Ss think! #xplap
A5: Give students voice and choice in the classroom. They will become more invested and empowered in class and you will get the best out of them. #XPLAP
A5: When winning the game is on the line, they care. That’s what is so exciting about a gamified classroom. Winning matters to them, therefore they will work harder. #XPLAP
A5: I think it comes down to how much hype we give the test. I want to give more do and focus on the self-care and gamified preparation rather than the test. Tell them we are preparing for a gaming showdown w/ other students in the state. Try your best and I’m happy! #xplap
✨A5: When we play to students’ strengths, there is NO LIMIT to what they can acheive! Offer opportunities in your game to let each student play to their strengths!✨
#XPLAP
A5: I have performance bonuses, better than before bonuses, on par bonuses, team test (for specific time) cards, bonus cheat sheet cards, etc ... I make them fun and give them purpose. Also they are monsters that you fight. Marks = damage & wrong answ = damage to ur health #xplap
A5: I think that the culture we create through gamification helps. The students are empowered by what they have achieved, which is often much more rigorous than the standarized test. #XPLAP
That was my version 1.0. I got tired of asking Ss their scores and doing the math myself. We automated. Some learning, curve but the Ss get it now and really enjoy. #XPLAP

We are just beginning and my students are earning “resources for their kingdom” by earning XP points for completing tasks in class or side quests. They set nine level goal because the game will reset after the nine week period. They “win” by earning their goal XP #xplap
We just finished a project tied to our human body unit where the kids had to create a product to teach our school how to be more healthy. It is best when the kids come up with the idea on their own. #XPLAP
A6: I think a lot of this comes down to teaching Ss in a very direct way about what they should be eating and how many hours they need to sleep. They need to know that if they wake up at this time they need to go to bed at that time. #xplap
Send reminder emails to parents about the importance of sleep and eating and also I am fortunate enough to work in a district that provides snacks for them especially on state testing days #xplap
A5: it’s about offering our students opportunities to have ownership of their learning. S’s need to see growth in the process not just the end result. #xplap
A6: this is a great question... I’m interested in ideas! I’m thinking maybe having the kids reflect or video a positive message for themselves or someone else on @Flipgrid to earn XP points before they go to bed (and it can’t be late)! #xplap
#xplap Thank you, i have been struggling to gamify my comp lab with only seeing them an hour, break through this chat just gave me the answer without giving me the answer!
A6: Students should never engage in last minute emergency prep. If they are well prepared and have a clear understanding of why the test is important then they will have the self-efficacy to sleep and eat well. #XPLAP
✨A6: Remind them! Our team sends https://t.co/EN4KoHqgmo notifications out the night before, and the morning of the test to remind parents and students to get rest and eat a good breakfast! ✨ #XPLAP
Another great question! Of course, I implement gamified learning through platforms such as #LegendsofLearning (shameless plug) #sorrynotsorry My kiddos LOVE playing games to learn! #xplap
I use Jimmy Fallon's games, especially with vocab. And we play 4 corners, Quizlet Live. Like I mentioned I need help in this area. https://t.co/GTG7dFTQyd#xplap
A7: Our big “test” in 8th grade was a descriptive writing essay. My favorite activity was having them each describe a Garbage Pail Kid sticker and then (the best part) having them create their own as well. I will never forget the girl who came up with “Eye Candy Andy.” 😀 #xplap
Friends, it’s been lovely. But 11:00pm EST is kicking my bottom! Have a wonderful night and it was a pleasure as always to learn with you! Until next week, stay safe! #xplap
