A1: who said unstructured play was just for kids??
A1) Play that involves freedom to do what you want, choice and place are yours to decide.
A1: Play (participants doing something most often physical) that is totally controlled by those engaged. https://t.co/EzKE4mOMML
A1 playing without an alternative purpose - simply to have fun alone or with others - almost direct opposite of what most call "work"
with the ton of support and encouragement you give daily, "ICLAP" may be the right title
A1: UnStructured play, to me, means exploration. Ss and Ts should have time to simply explore each day.
Hi Quinn! I know Salt Lake well. Attended BYU just down the road and my daughter is there now!
A1. Unstructured play is an opportunity to allow choice. Ss can choose what their play looks like.
Hopping aboard a bit late, but with a glad heart! I'm Angela, 6th grade pirate teacher from Alberta!
The Genius is coming fast tonight -
Yes! But as Fred Rogers said, "Play is the work of children" https://t.co/i3qRDhyEI3
A1 playing without an alternative purpose - simply to have fun alone or with others - almost direct opposite of what most call "work"
Yeah...we might need to work on the hashtag. Other than that! I'm in!
A1: No predetermined structure, safe to fail, no preconceived exceptions.
I definitely don't think teachers or students are given enough time to explore this!
A1 open-ended, child centered and child directed exploration
A1: Me going out and wandering around in the woods and doing what I feel like, such as fort building or catching bloodsuckers.
No matter what age you are, play is an essential part of life. https://t.co/SN8JVj32nW
A1: who said unstructured play was just for kids??
A1: Everyone, do what you want! Have fun together!
yup - they know what work should be!
There is an chat, which is at 9 CST I believe

A1) Play that involves freedom to do what you want, choice and place are yours to decide.
A1 Unstructured play means letting our brains tap into fun & creativity w/out guidelines. Best times during childhood and parenthood:)
A1: key phrase is unstructured. Basic rules of respect and that's it.
A1 Unstructured play allows for DREAMS to be born.
Hi ! interested in your day. My Ss are learning about the depression, we are going to mimick the stock crash of 1929.
A1b) Oops. You probably wanted the generic version? Stuff to play with and time to play with it. White space, but with stuff.
if you've ever seen a child play, you know they play w/purpose: rules, creativity, and more. https://t.co/lzUyeH2F6o
Yes! But as Fred Rogers said, "Play is the work of children" https://t.co/i3qRDhyEI3
A1 playing without an alternative purpose - simply to have fun alone or with others - almost direct opposite of what most call "work"
A1: they call this a "structure" but it's just a skeleton. Unstructured play is the life/blood/breath/energy of the skeleton
I know!! It brings two incredible minds together in one book. I absolutely love it!
A1 Ss having fun by doing whatever they enjoy the most without anyone telling them to do it
Question 2 is coming up soon.
That was actually Froebel I think! Let's not forget our history.
A1 that's why the are also fun choice &fun
My own children do this! It's amazing! https://t.co/AeaNLrSOb7
if you've ever seen a child play, you know they play w/purpose: rules, creativity, and more. https://t.co/lzUyeH2F6o
Yes! But as Fred Rogers said, "Play is the work of children" https://t.co/i3qRDhyEI3
A1 playing without an alternative purpose - simply to have fun alone or with others - almost direct opposite of what most call "work"
A1: they call this a structure but it's really a skeleton. Unstructured play is the life systems of it https://t.co/nHlU1w7Wnj
Unfortunately I feel that "unstructured play" is close to being on the endangered species list!
Mine too, I love to listen and hear what they're saying. They use diff voices. It's great. https://t.co/blqbSBwoiY
A1 playing without an alternative purpose - simply to have fun alone or with others - almost direct opposite of what most call "work"
And those are the lifeskills that are more important than necessarily content knowledge. https://t.co/iz7PXCF51M
A1 Unstructured play means letting our brains tap into fun & creativity w/out guidelines. Best times during childhood and parenthood:)
Ronald Fisher from Utah 3rd G.
A1 The definition is uninhibited arbitration and excelling at imagination
A1 Unstructured free play / imaginative play is crucial for cognitive development.
agreed, Oliver - in school and at home - we gotta change that!
I think that involves a balancing act. Ss need guidance and structure to some degree but freedom for other areas
thankfully you - and the nearly 100,000 kids signed up for Global School Play Day - are the "game wardens" of free play!
A1 Freedom! Running! Inventing! Creating! Laughing! Battling! Solving problems that arise! Pretending!
A2. It allows Ss time to collaborate, discuss, & make meaning for what they need/want. It helps build community.
A1: America is so worried about catching up in Science and math that they forgot that kids NEED to play and explore.
I'm going to disagree. I think most recess isn't really unstructured play. It's 90% on adult terms. IMO
Howdy ! Tina from TN, finally cruising in!
Absolutely!Exploration is when the learning happens. In or out of play still learning.
A2: in unstr play, conflicts are created & resolved, skill are accidentally learned, and natural phenomena learned from
A2 Ss learn social skills, develop passions, and grow thoroughly during unstructured play!
and jumping in a creek because it is fun, not just to collect samples for bio class
What are you doing for day? I'm going to and have a stock market crash in my classroom! https://t.co/gc0qL23hSl
RT : Children remind us that we are here not so much to figure out or analyze life, but rather to enjoy it!
What's up, Tina! Good to see ya!
a2: it allows students to learn their own limits and social norms. it stops them from running to adults for any little thing
Yes! The things they can come up with are unbelievably creative. I have been blown away by their ideas. https://t.co/TOQpCsLkxj
A2. It allows Ss time to collaborate, discuss, & make meaning for what they need/want. It helps build community.
A2:Unstructured play is where we learn the rules of life.We also make the rules for life.Creativity and innovation in open environment
a2: I've been asked many times to 'ref' during recess - I always say no
A-flipping-men to THAT statement!
Congratulations!! I recommend following chat w/ & . Great leaders who'll inspire you!
A2: MENTAL HEALTH! Unstructured play is how we find ourselves, how we develop passion.
A2. Critical thinking, peer relations, problem solving, resilience, delay of gratification
unstructured doesn't = let them eat /beat each other. Let them learn from 1 another tap in2 right side brain https://t.co/E6LtJhahcc
A2 It lets kids explore the world around them, set their own boundaries, and then push past them. Sometimes even get hurt.
A1 Love & 4 play innovation & creativity
this is a beautiful definition. I was going to mention navigating conflict but you said it way BETTER!
A2: Creativity, imagination, problem solving, social skills, collaboration, compromise, etc.
A2:Builds confidence & helps kids learn all of the "unsaid" social rules. Learn by doing! . WAIT! That sounds like
Players have arrived, are excited, & ready for our week of warm ups! Game begins in 6 days! https://t.co/wEiwMlHXXG
A2 ask any parent - unstructured play is when ideas are generated, relationships made, problems discovered and solved - all with fun
Ss develop their mores and norms rather than just being taught them!
A2 I credit unstructured play time w/helping me learn independence & advance my curiosity & creativity-let children be kids sometimes!
A2: Unstructured play is problem solving with a purpose that kids can understand
A2) Unstructured play leads to discovery and assist with inquiry.
21st century skills if I ever saw it! https://t.co/xFhuXcbAWQ
A1: Unstructured play = uninterrupted time to just be kids: explore, create, imagine, design, make, discover, talk, & learn
A2: Unstructured gives time for exploration & socialization in a realistic scenario. Its real life. Not in a classroom with rules
A2: Without it, Ss will miss out on so many crucial skills needed every day. Problem solving, teamwork, etc.
right, I suppose my exploring content and problem solving not quite the same as play, even though I enjoy it immensely!
so it creates the environment naturally that we're trying to create in the classroom. perfect model https://t.co/9atj1fJtBW
Yes! The things they can come up with are unbelievably creative. I have been blown away by their ideas. https://t.co/TOQpCsLkxj
A2. It allows Ss time to collaborate, discuss, & make meaning for what they need/want. It helps build community.
There it is! Great definition! https://t.co/VMRKzIqWBN
A2: Unstructured play is problem solving with a purpose that kids can understand
YES! and, as adults, enjoy the show, b/c it'll b better than what we come up with!
A2: It's where Ss can really see what they are made of without someone trying to fit them into a box or rubric!
A2 Because incidental learning about real things happens on the regular with conflict resolution being at the top of the list.
A2: If it wasn't for unstructured play, I'd never be a super famous rapper. I'd just be college & career ready (whatever that means)
Thanks! My kids navigated some conflict themselves today :)
A2 we may get to this eventually, but the idea of play can go past elementary school and recess too. Middle/high school kids need play
Left to their own devices children do not "eat/ beat each other"
and when they get hurt, they can figure out how to make things better - problem solve
I have 140 6th grade middle school Ss who will get their play on next week for thanks to https://t.co/T1P3970Ttt
thankfully you - and the nearly 100,000 kids signed up for Global School Play Day - are the "game wardens" of free play!
A2 Unstructured play is important because it allows for endless possibilities and risk taking
Absolutely! I can't believe the things my 3rd graders can create with minimal guidance from me.
A2 if I as a teacher structure the play, I'm keeping Ss in the boxes I created for them. I won't see them grow.
It was much different when I was a kid. We would play a lot of pickup games in addition to our organized league games.
agree yet unstructured play is the key to innovation taking risk
A2 Unstructured play is great way for Ts to learn new possibilities form their Ss....empowering students to be creative!
A2: Unstructured play fosters creativity, problem solving, communication, imagination, ... Basically the essential lifeskills
I need a magical hug!!! Good to see you too!
when observing Ss, you can tell those who are over-structured, have no rules, vs unstructured. https://t.co/F3hK6lZr1A
A2:Unstructured play is where we learn the rules of life.We also make the rules for life.Creativity and innovation in open environment
without play you will be fir for/ ready for nothing!
I agree....and those are skills that this generation needs more than ever!
Do kids need more recess time? Project suggests students do better academically with more free play https://t.co/VGwGIpJFba
I haven't seen it happen yet. Research confirms, it's ok!
A2: Unstructured play allows children to be children. They learn and practice the social skills at their level so they can grow
A1: means to have no end goal in mind. Just a process for understanding the world around.
Hi boys! My husband & I talk about this all the time. How dif our childhoods were compared to our 2 teenage boys!
Thinking THE GREG has created a new handle for me, TNFirecracker...I light up when I hear it :) https://t.co/yk2zz6jLit
A-flipping-men to THAT statement!
or while outdoors in Wisconsin! Ha!
I feel like there are certain things that make some unstructured play experiences better than others.
An excellent answer! Well said. https://t.co/DPUNZk4uOg
A2 if I as a teacher structure the play, I'm keeping Ss in the boxes I created for them. I won't see them grow.
hahaha!! Tell me about it. We are watching (& listening w/earplugs) to them learning!
I don't think our boys even know how to play "Kick the Can!" That was a summer night staple in our neighborhood!
I want my job to be going around the country and hugging teachers!
Shoot, I still need play.
A2 how we learn how to cooperate, be a teammate, validate others, advocate, and take a step back
hard to encourage ss to take risks in class if T doesn't trust them to make decisions about play. A2
Hi Heidi! No doubt about it!
Actually we were talking when I became
yes innovative companies want employers that r innovative passionate not GPA and test scores
A2 depending on the age/situation, Ts can monitor "unstructured" play, ready to step in w some structure to guide Ss, keep it safe-ish
https://t.co/a4sbRLObyg
A2: unstr play allows students freedom & the chance to be kids wout being told what to do/how to do it.
A2. Unstructured play allows for Ss to use their creativity, allows Ss to be innovative in a way that is meaningful to them.
A2: So much of a day is spent with SS being told what to do. Unstructured play changes that. Time to explore & create without rules.
Like having other items in the space that allow for exploration
Our MS lunch per is 40 minutes & that's WAY TOO Long! I take Ss out for 20 minutes even in 32 degree weather https://t.co/Q9aebDWXuP
Finally found it, if you find the time this is an excellent discussion on "The Case for Make Believe" https://t.co/lR4TYvTQNt
Finally found it, if you find the time this is an excellent discussion on "The Case for Make Believe" https://t.co/dD09hl79Y7
Agreed! I know that LinkedIn values that!
A2 I've seen so many talents that wouldn't necessarily show up because of our daily play time.
Ahhh!!! Almost missed u guys again! 👋 Misty EdTech/Media Hudson TX
Hi Tom! Good to see you on . Hope all is well with you. Life here has been crazy!
"A child’s greatest achievements are possible in play, achievements that tomorrow will become her basic level of real action."
We played that, wiffle ball, jail break, various card games.
Ts set up the boxes, but don't close the lids or tape them shut. That way Ss can change them how they want/need.
a2 our bodies need time to grow and stretch and exult. Org. sports are one way, but play gets the whole person going and smiling
That is a loaded question. Because unstructured play is always structured to a certain degree
Choice should make up most of the day.
Very true! Not agreeing is totally ok. :)
A3 Curiosity and new ways of thinking!
A3: Problem solving, learning to collaborate, planning are all things that Ss learn through play. Life skills that is.
kids at recess buildings nests in v of a tree with sticks, interesting how they were getting to stay trying to recreate birds work
Play gives breath to ideas, adventurous thinking, problem-solving, and practice for life.
Mine too! Played it year 'round growing up in Panama--always summer there! :) https://t.co/qjLmo4fJaR
I don't think our boys even know how to play "Kick the Can!" That was a summer night staple in our neighborhood!
looking forward to reading this thanks for the share
Also, don't forget to poke some holes in the box. https://t.co/OHttIwDKPv
Ts set up the boxes, but don't close the lids or tape them shut. That way Ss can change them how they want/need.
part of good teaching is trusting Ss to take things to the next stage w/out support. Play is no different
You'd be great at that job! A genuine boost of teacher love & encouragement! I'll be your photographer!
but structured by those playing, not by outside forces telling them what to do.
Good to see you as well, crazy here too. Who is your SB50 pick?
A3 Problem solving, conflict resolution, social skills, turn taking, the ability to be humble, and leadership skills to name a few
A3 problem solving, collaboration, thinking outside the box (w/ air holes), and the all important how to make cool stuff without plans
A3: Creativity, perseverance, determination, communication, collaboration, teamwork, critical thinking, and more!
A3: TONS! Communication, compromise, debate, cooperative skills, socializing, listing to others, oh, the list!!!!

A3: Time management, problem solving, creativity, curiosity, team skills. And so many more! It can develop a world of skills.
A3 Social skills, mores & norms, problem solving, conflict resolution...
A3: sorry, jumped the gun on that with A2. Conflict resolution, strength, community, problem solving! https://t.co/NJu3IMen8P
now that's cool, didn't realize!
Jumping ship - have other commitments! Thanks for the chat!
A1: Unstructured= not dictated or controlled Play=fun, joyful discovery
Right. In any vein, unstructured play leads to skills in collaboration, responsibility and organization. All important
I love that you just used the word "exult." Bonus vocab points.
A3:Curiosity, innovation, creativity, routines, and confidence. Risk taking and outside of the box thinking are also important
A3: social norms, collaboration, problem solving, innovation too many to list in one tweet
Monitor for safety's sake, yes. Spend time explaining what they could do with the materials, no. https://t.co/4wWUC48hIS
A2 depending on the age/situation, Ts can monitor "unstructured" play, ready to step in w some structure to guide Ss, keep it safe-ish
A3 problem solving, divergent thinking, conflict resolution, spatial awareness
A1: Unstructured play is a chance for kids to develop thinking patterns and skills on their own...it goes where it goes...
A3: Why the 4C's of course! Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, & Critical Thinking. Also sprinkle in confidence & empathy.
A3: All of them? Lots of Cs, problem solving, social skills, self-reliance, confidence.
agreed! It's fun when the talks are engaging. I'm in a talk right now and it's regurgitate city.
Is unstructured play that happens alone different than unstructured play that happens with others?
A3: This list of skills would make soneone a LOT more Career & Life ready than our outdated curriculums do.
a3 collaboration creativity innovation working 4 a bigger cause
I totally agree, I just believe the opps aren't there today like they used to be.
A2 So much THOUGHT went into play from solving mysteries to planning unbday parties, it's those times I remember the most SO MUCH FUN!
Play is about accelerating achievement "In play, the child is always behaving beyond his age, above his usual everyday behavior ..."
A2: unstructured play is important because it gives kids a chance to problem solve and figure out how their brains work.
This chat is making me want 2 go out & play right now! Wouldn't it be cool if we could just play w/ our Ss allday long 2morrow?
This chat is making me want 2 go out & play right now! Wouldn't it be cool if we could just play w/ our Ss allday long 2morrow?
A3: By definition unstructured play demands S creation! This skill is paramount in tomorrow's workplace.
A3 Part of learning and growing up is learning how to build heathy relationships
Hey, I listen to that podcast!
A3. Collaboration, compromising, communication, creativity, decision making, problem solving, the list is endless.
A3: Alternate uses of resources, imagination, creativity, problem solving, innovation, teaming, communicating. https://t.co/CFm51pDSqy
with more mandates, more curriculum, more expectation, we need to make it a priority
A3) Oops I said it earlier… discovery, inquiry, and freedom. :-)
A3: MANY!!!! Communication, problem solving, team work, team building, compassion, empathy, creativity, new ideas, leadership,.....
That's the cool thing about the - You can https://t.co/QEPF2Ijcok
This chat is making me want 2 go out & play right now! Wouldn't it be cool if we could just play w/ our Ss allday long 2morrow?
A3: We held past 2 years. I witnessed incredible collaboration & problem solving between SS of all grades & abilities!
totally agree. Many of the skills we developed as children happened when adults were not monitoring
Joel from TN joining late been wanting to check TLAP out.
I remember our school used to have school-wide play days. Whatever happened to those...
A3 Helps students think outside the box and problem solve on their own! Allows them to explore their interests
A3: Creativity, problem-solving, inquiry, social skills, rapping skills, creativity, and more.
Keep saying it! From your mouth/tweet to the powers that be's ears.
A3 is learning to "unclench" a skill? We have students who are programmed 16 hours a day. Give them some time. Just. Time.
A3: they learn the skills of life, that not all things are structured. And how sometimes things just morp into others.
Agreed. The misconception about play is that there is no learning involved in it. This, in fact, is very wrong
A3. Unstructured play gives students time to wonder and be curious about the world they live in.
A3: Unstructured play develops so many skills! You can't learn how you learn without playing around w/stuff..metacognition!
One of the most important things, yet we spend lots of time in the lower grades with academic skills instead. https://t.co/rXgo6rKDXF
A3 Part of learning and growing up is learning how to build heathy relationships
bonus points for an uber fun Twitter profile pic!
What is stopping you? At least for an afternoon, an hour, a period?
I think you described it well enough for it to become a skill! Well done!
Not to give children plenty of time for play is to actively decide to retard their intellectual and social growth. I.e criminal
Laurie from Cen Cali joining late!
A3 Leadership, cooperation, conflict resolution, creativity
There you go! Creation is the key to learning.
A2: Because it involves facets of enjoyment of those involved-->intrinsic@motivation-->Effective Learning will occur!!
I agree, which should be at the top of the list as far as things we want our Ss to have!
You have to fight the clench!
I think as Ts we can also enrich S play by guiding them to think more deeply about what they're doing
yeah movement. Talking about play. Good topic but not really anyone talking.
A3: What do I do with no direction? <--- unstructured play teaches children how to answer that question
It's the Teach Like a Pirate Chat. We're talking Global School Play Day tonight.
Interesting. In many schools Ss of different ages are separated. Doesn't give chances 2 learn from older Ss good or bad
Question 4 will be arriving shortly.
Teach Like A Pirate! book by same name by Dave burgess
Yes, yes, and yes. Do not let traditional forms of knowledge tell you that unstructured play is not valuable learning
a3: Socially unstructured play is as formative as guided reading. It helps Ss find identities and learn conflict resolution and PS.
Time. so important. Give them their own time. Time to learn by unlearning, so to speak
A3: (2) also I think unstructured play lets Ss develop good questioning skills..why did that happen?
A2: Unstructured play allows kids to problem solve, imagine, discover, create, produce, collaborate, dream & inspire. They become!
Depriving children of play is a deliberate choice to retard intellectual development https://t.co/uC4NFJbXzT
Agreed. The misconception about play is that there is no learning involved in it. This, in fact, is very wrong
Unfortunate that teaching can't involve more of this impressionable skill
A3: Conflict resolution and prevention, social norms, empathy, creativity... a LONG list. It is SO important for kids.
these are definitely more important skills than knowing the cell organelles or capital of Deleware.
let's not do anything rash, now...Remember Han Solo on Hoth?
A4 a) All of them. b) Heck no! Check out - even Ts need to be playing.
I am intrigued by but I only have a $20 amazon giftcard. Too many awesome books. Where do you suggest I start.
It's something I don't do well. And it leads to problems. We realllly shouldn't have fifth graders with ulcers.
👏👏👏👏 I was lucky enough to start in Early Childhood..drilled into my brain how imp play is!!! https://t.co/axHatrLBBG
Not to give children plenty of time for play is to actively decide to retard their intellectual and social growth. I.e criminal
wow! I want all of those things for kids! Great answer!
3rd grade teacher and in Hingham, MA checking in on and my a bit late. Hey everyone!
A4: all levels, including adult Ts...used to teach HS & my Ss would have benefited...had I thought of it https://t.co/aYa6DmhJfd
Yoda gave the same advice. Seems legit. https://t.co/kRx38aI0Un
Time. so important. Give them their own time. Time to learn by unlearning, so to speak
unstructured play develops health, leadership skills, teamwork, social skills, confidence, and helps with dealing with negative too
We talk abt learning skills like organization, collaboration; through play we can really observe these traits
You're right...I should just do it! Lots of time constraints...!
A4: it's not limited to age - the reason coloring books are in for adults is that we all need unstructured time to let our hair down
A4: Every grade. Even high school seniors. Absolutely.
all grades - why does the fun stop because you turn double digit? or teen? or double digit grades?
They got 99% of the population their jobs, not the known facts about the other!
A3: Conflict resolution, problem-solving, compromise, collaboration, innovation, creativity, empathy...LOTS of important stuff :)
A4: This has been the only frustrating part about GSPD. Not enough High Schools & Colleges joining. Are they too old? SAD!!!
A4: As the expression goes 'pre-K through retired' including "Older Than Dirt" geezers such as me!!! https://t.co/vFu0t9ONlo
Have your school purchase enough copies for a book study & buy another book
A4: Every Single Grade! And Beyond. Ts and Ss all benefit from play. It is the best part of my job
180 days in a school year...you'll get to that curriculum mandate...allow some time for your kids to really grow
A4 If you bring Play to the Admin, Teachers, and students of all ages!
A4. All Kids all the time. It may look different, but unstructured play has importance no matter what the age. How do we as Ts use it?
A4 every grade. Also adults in PD situations. Which I've only rarely seen. We're not quite sure how to handle that kind of freedom.
A4: All grade levels, including teachers!!! We're never too old to play!
A4: ha! Trick question!! All grade levels can benefit from play. Oh! And us ADULTS could use a lot more of it, too!!
A4: Actually, I'm interested in seeing older Ss during the
Just like , and Ts, older Ss have trouble with independence
A4b: And, for that matter, even us teachers and grown-ups could benefit from a little more unstructured play!
Activity and exercise are of course important. Time for imaginative play is crucial to intellectual growth.
A4: Adults could learn from unstructured play. It's like Ages 2-99. Anyone will benefit when the reigns are taken off.
A4: I think that all gr. lvls could benefit from some form of unstructured play!
A4: Teens are a little trickier. If they are totally unstructured and have their phones in their hands, no playing takes place.
A4: I learn some of my best stuff by PLAYING with things I come in contact with!! All ages need play.
A4: all of them, but we've re-branded it for upper grades as and and need to allow for complete "unstructure"
A4: all ages can benefit from play - it leads to creativity, change & innovation - has space for play in the day & it works
A4 with our 8th graders when we have free outdoor time. Usually 2-3 offered activities and free space. Kids go where they want.
A4 ss tend to either pick up sorts (yeah!) Or sit and talk/gossip. Latter seems less desirable https://t.co/En8eEENGyW
A4: Good for all! As you get older chance to practice skills in new environments. My MS Ss would benefit from play!
I just started coloring with my students last week
A4: EVERY-how else will Ss become good parents and mentors...or even have fun will life. Whoever is having an 80s party-let me know.
A4: EVERYBODY can benefit from unstructured play! The older the person, the more likely they need it most! It's where the joy is kept!
Start w/ and if you like what you read...we have lots more for you next!
Fun stops b/c there are fun suckers out there. They were trained in more rigid times. Need to change the culture.
A4 A high school that my friend works at had a "wellness day" where they got to choose from a menu of field trips. So great!
They may need some games or implements of play to kickstart them...
A3 Creativity is huge- I also learned how to listen, argue, persevere, accept other ideas, take risks, & get to know my strengths
A4:One of the best things about living in dorms in college was the amt of playing there was. It was fun!
A4 design challenges give high schooler a taste of real world task managing! They love real world problem solving
A4: I do like to have them park their phones and play games, but I give them a game structure. They do LOVE to play but phones block
What are you doing with it? I've had ideas circling the drain, but not going anywhere.
I wonder if they would buy in if the adults did too :)
A4 our HS has an outdoor section at lunchtime. Freedom to chill or play. Lots of play Happens.
I started that, but let it slide. Need to get it going again
Some Ts like some Ss just want to be told what to do...😕 https://t.co/dG4rsreKVS
A4 every grade. Also adults in PD situations. Which I've only rarely seen. We're not quite sure how to handle that kind of freedom.
A4 47 year old balding 8th grade history Ts can also benefit from unstructred play, especially in school - just sayin' &D
thinking critically can save my life...knowing where Dover is not so much.
agree u can change the world with passion fun and innovation no matter how old u r
True! Which is exactly why they need more of it!
A4: Unstructured play doesn't mean unmonitored. Rules still matter and respect has to be modeled and consequences rendered.
WendyLRouse: A3. Unstructured play gives students time to wonder and be curious about the world they live in.
Americans2012: RT WendyLRouse: A3. Unstructured play gives students time to wonder and be curious about the world they live in.
As unstructured play time has decreased, issues with executive functioning have risen. Coincidence??
A4: my Ts rocking to Gonoodle was awesome.
I would enjoy this a lot more if it was rewritten as "Humans..." A possibility?
Sorry to hear that. Too much of that going on with lack of funds.
how can you use the phones to get them to play?
A4: I feel the struggle to embrace unstr play in my own life as a parent. Kids ask to play, default is "not interested." Do It Anyway!
Thank you, Marci!! is a great crew!!
A4: No stinkin' way!! I would love for my sons' middle/high schools to devote some time to non-electronical play! outdoor and indoor
A4 I think unstructured play is something everyone can benefit from, as an artist I promote the freedom of that open exploration!
Play is often squashed at MS/HS b/c it can lead to fights/conflict. Ss have no practice in resolving things on their own
I agree....but that is what Oliver Wendel Holmes said. Ha! Not much I could do!
DING! And THAT my friends is the correct answer! Man, our head pirate is smart! :)
https://t.co/DVmDqlfiPR
A4: ha! Trick question!! All grade levels can benefit from play. Oh! And us ADULTS could use a lot more of it, too!!
Hey!! Don't I get to see you this week???
A4 Especially elementary and middle, because they are developmental years. Important in HS as well because they understand initiativ
I tried to add the asterisk to make up for his mistake!
want a fun PD play idea? and I put together our own for tomorrow (thanks ) - may flop, but so what?
wonder if putting teens w younger ss would help Kickstart their memory about play? A4,
I figured it was about the quote. I'd coin a new one! :)
I don't know who I'm more jealous of...
A4) all people groups on the planet experience unstructured play, I think we should as why do we stop it and not model it?
why is that?! heard others say I'm fun but theyre not, no one is stopping all adults fr having fun, need too rediscover
I'm in, too! I have just the outfit :)
I actually had some brand new teachers embarrassed to Pop See Ko in front of other teachers! I couldn't believe it!
Amen on the unstructured play for adults
awesome! Why do ppl think learning and pd must be dry and flat!?
A4: my question is how do I sell this to Admin who's mind is on Testing and retention rates, etc?
A4: At LinkedIn PLAY is highly valued For some reason our high schools and colleges feel too busy & important, though. Makes no sense
Q5 Improv games great for language classrooms + warm ups
love that idea! and they could market it ... how cool would that be?
That is awesome! She would love P is for Pirate, I think!
HEIDI! It is so nice to see you my friend! IS mighty smart!
A4: Jumping in late , basketball kept me busy. I'm for play, anytime, anywhere. Kids are still kids. I'm an adult, and I wanna play
not sure if this has been mentioned but Kevin Carroll is AMAZING! Spoke at ISTE 2014 about value in PLAY! https://t.co/VX53VrvNLC
A5: In PE, I find a lot of time for play. Design games but let Ss determine how they are played. A bit harder on the tech side
A5 We have unstructured Play Time every morning. I learn so much about my Ss and their creativity during this time.
That's a challenge for the Ts to model. Do that flash mob at lunch, that crazy dance at the pep rally.
A5 taught new content vocab about landforms/regions, then a relay race using photos, maps, and key phrases. Fast, exciting assessment
There used to be a stage called "Childhood". Now College & Career prep starts at age 5. DUMB!
basic premise - we went crazy, antidote is in a lock box - clues all about Gilded Age as unit intro
A5: I take a product that all are familiar with and ask teams of three to find alternate uses. https://t.co/JGPKvtnvIO
A5 Make everything into a game, make it a little mysterious and unexpected
such a great idea. I had seniors who'd never been on a field trip at all during high school
We structured day w/ time 4 deliberate interaction bet/ grade levels but not ongoing all day. Plenty of supervision.
On my mark, get set, go ARRRRR. on my kindle and ready to read.
Like most skills its progressive. Ss need to start young solving small probs & then its easier as they get older
A5: Play charades on Wed. w/ our spelling words! We LOVE to play & "Sparkle!" I think Ss retain much more when playing games!
An undervalued component of learning- Play fosters curiosity, which leads to exploration and discovery. https://t.co/vVGBcBWRgH
A5: I try to incorporate choice, fun and social interaction into our daily routine- some call it play- I call it recess. And I play!
A5: favorite fight song bracket challenge during -athletes lead the learning in music class & we do shoot baskets!
A5 I have used music and dance to is inspire and motivate. Need to do more with play.
A5: encourage games, acting out concepts, improv, give time to explore/play new tools, tlap
High schools and colleges need to get on the bus and practice what they preach!
A5: elem math students given dice and told to make up a game/rules etc. Awesome new games and math ideas come about
Excellent!!! Let me know what you think after you dive in.
A5: create a class culture where it's ok to laugh share & enjoy the learning process - be active - musical chairs critique
Yes I can't wait and I am bringing two pirate teachers with me!!
If only he had time in that crazy schedule of his...
A5: Teach media class. Ss wanted to do video on love for ❤️Day. Class today. My son wasn't feel in' it. 😂 https://t.co/yCwbWI1xGO
A5. I have Ss make up games to practice content. We play Kahoot, musical chairs, limbo, etc. to practice content & engage.
a5: all the time - cards, dice, straws, materials - students had to make a probability game based on what they learned in class
That is even better news!!
A5 have done content quizzes that mixed in push-ups, squats, tic tac toe to earn extra attempts.
I'm not saying its bad! Tons of summer camps are very successful w/ the older kids guiding younger & both love it!
Angelaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hello, friend! Love your new do, BTW! And by "do" I mean color!
Students enjoy the quizlet app.
My students and I love to play. In our play we find new ideas and think creatively. https://t.co/U2UWEB1ahO
A2: Unstructured play allows kids to problem solve, imagine, discover, create, produce, collaborate, dream & inspire. They become!
art teachers always have the pulse of a school b/c Ss open up while making art
A5: Read 3 little bears. Ask SS to build a house that big bad wolf cannot blow over. Tons of materials. Go! https://t.co/HmTQwVQCXQ
A5: Play is a big part of the design thinking process! You have to try your ideas out with no expectations attached!
A5: We play review games, but I like to use analogies that require the Ss to improv or take part. We do Aztec human sacrifice this way
Oh I know....I can only imagine! Work hard, play hard? Does that work?
I figured you were supportive. :) Just wanted to clarify that it wasn't utter chaos! :)
No way! That is perfect. It will be picture time, for sure!
Wait, is that why I have so much success while having my Ss respond to their learning with art?
A5: teach Ts, I've done themed pd's w/dressup & activities to match & music to boot, even rewrote lyrics to sing a off key tune
A5: I'm a big kid. I play with my Ss like I do with my kids. Tag, R/C cars, basketball. Always modeling appropriate ways to disagree.
one of the reasons some of my fave projects have that art part!
A5: Ss create games/activities for peers that don't require prior knowledge-just a desire to participate.
That would be fun! No go. Saving my WI road trip for . Counting down the days....140, but who's counting?
This looks like total !
that one was for YOU, my friend!
We'll send one to that though woman to make her jealous that we're hanging out :)
I include as much as possible. To the point that some Ss say "uh, Rollins. This isn't an art class."
especially if you're helping them, or creating alongside!
Question 6 up in one minute.
Got it! Totally get it! Only 140? Not bad! :)
That is a sign of success! Booyah!
a5 bring theater, global collaboration via song writing ebook creation helping Ss discover curiosity &love 4 learning
and don't get me started on music.
hopefully epic - but if not, we had fun making it
A5: In Art studio, love my next wk lessons. tech for , 5th gr. play & learn together as small groups. Use
I do need gun duels. Hamilton - Burr. Trust me it becomes play
why yes it is- & b/c Ss connect to their art at a very personal level especially when you use "big ideas"
A5 Playfair cooperative games for team building and loosening up before creating a skit of project. It's a book from like 1980.
it's actually 2 of the 6 language arts, viewing and representing!
Q6: What are the barriers to allowing students more time for unstructured play at home or at school? https://t.co/PNdv6iNf8k
a5: it's a rare day when we DON'T play a game in math
I'm picturing slow-motion kids with Nerf guns diving sideways across the classroom "NOOOOOO"
& This chat rocks! Thank you!
A5: buy a pack of "Would you Rather" cards. Double circles of kids shift around and ask new question! LOVE!
A5-love doing literary crimes court. I'm the judge, of course.
Thanks! It was SO fun! 50 kids from 2 schools all in different Greek roles. I am always Athena.
speaking of rocking ... proposal coming soon?
A good recipe doesn't work without quality ingredients! Thank YOU!
We do that if the whole class is present before the bell
A5. Ss play a spy game competing to gather "intelligence" before enemy agents beat them to it.
I'm hoping to go to this summer!
Maybe he'll let you introduce him! I got to do that! It was fun (& to a crowd of nonpirates)
A6: Broken curriculum, GRADES, College & Career ready rhetoric, & massive overscheduling. LET THE KIDS PLAY!
A6: Time and testing seem to be big topics in our school. Ts afraid to make time. Ss in turn not given enough time or space.
a few wanted to go all Matrix. We did follow all the "Rules of the Duel". A fav lesson of the year.
A5: One I'm so wanting to do: Get 'throwaway packing materials' and have teams do an Apollo 13 "build some useful prototype."
A5: We built trenches in our classroom as part of a WWI review game. We threw paper balls at each other!
A6: Everybody's too busy these days..Guilty of being too busy to let my own kids play enough. 😞 schools are STUFFED with objectives.
A6. Mostly a lack of buy-in about the value from administrators and colleagues.
A6: TIME at school fear of not getting all curriculum in, fear of backlash from parents and/or admin, fear of student behavior issues
A5 Thx to the inspiration from we created & played r own cardboard arcade games-21st century skills were off the charts!
I know!I have a mental block.what 2 present? What 2 present? Ideas? Do you guys need something specific @ the elem. level?
A5: Okay. You got me. I do use creative play time, usually in math, but need to connect it w/ curriculum more actively. It will work.
A6 Fear of the Test, right? Worrying that you won't fit it all in. Thing is, they'll work harder for you when you give play time.
A6 the idea that doubling down on the amount of math/ela time will advance test scores. Get rid of recess, that's even MORE time yay!
oh but you must & we must incorporate music
OMG...with the college ready stuff!!! 😡 https://t.co/XdwlZh7z3j
A6: Broken curriculum, GRADES, College & Career ready rhetoric, & massive overscheduling. LET THE KIDS PLAY!
So integrate those stuffy objectives with PLAY!!!
A6 "Wrapping up" is never easy with unstructured play.
A6: Deciding to do it and then doing it, really. Heard about with seating order changes based on rank. Sounds interesting.
A5: "instructional minutes" -I just threw up a little in my mouth.
A6 bc taking a kid that hates math and giving him twice as much math and taking recess away -- that'll help him love math.
Increased "rigor", testing, lawn mower parents, American pragmatism, overwor,ed Ts... A6 https://t.co/dNqz3MQsh6
Q6: What are the barriers to allowing students more time for unstructured play at home or at school? https://t.co/PNdv6iNf8k
A6 Barrier: We don't always see the long term Ben
A6: school gets in the way at home. hwk needs a real purpose or shouldn't be given. can be a block https://t.co/SHk0NHRMJG
they're missing out! U can be serious @ your passion & career but still have fun when you learn/teach, wish all wild see
A6: Been contemplating use of time & how much is wasted. What if we eliminated waste by increasing effectiveness of 1st time teaching?
Hope dream becomes reality.Lots of play at (structured & unstructured-if u know where to look).
And I have arrived! Looking forward to the morning program!
Feeling guilty, I've missed and for three weeks now. But... the restorative yoga has been good for this .
A6:At school mine are time and space. Trying to get everything in during the day.We all know play is important. How do we make it work
My team has really been trying to push quality, 1st time instruction instead of tutor, remediate, after school etc
A6 I read in the paper that the barriers have been given strange names, such as "standardized tests" and "SLOs" - crazy nomenclature
I find when the kids are playing I can cover twice as many objectives, and the Ss don't realize it.
None - if require documentation & some explanation / presentation AND demand a $2.00 max cost. Students only! https://t.co/meEDWWnDeK
Q6: What are the barriers to allowing students more time for unstructured play at home or at school? https://t.co/PNdv6iNf8k
A5: "I have too much content to cover" - meanwhile 35 Ss drool like zombies from 1950s style desks.
A6 state and national testing!!! :-(
And yet this seems to be what many Ts do to make school better. How is this helpful? https://t.co/ePcfN5r7AB
A6 bc taking a kid that hates math and giving him twice as much math and taking recess away -- that'll help him love math.
A6 I so wish all classes could do fewer questions as homework. Might let kids play more at home https://t.co/gkyjlkPfca
A6 bc taking a kid that hates math and giving him twice as much math and taking recess away -- that'll help him love math.
awesome. I applied to give a spark talk, admin might be more open to provide pd $ that way.
Yes and learn to tread the mile long inch deep trench of objectives to see which ones need the most attention. https://t.co/5UaSiWEP0D
So integrate those stuffy objectives with PLAY!!!
Thanks for a great chat and reminder that I need to incorporate unstructured play more a lot more often!
A6: Barriers to giving Ss time is the fact that everything that's required to be done takes too much time & we forget about fun.
The list goes on and on if we let it. Tonight's chat just blew up the other list-removing those barriers.
A6 Build in the pressure release of play time, and your instruction becomes more effective.
Absolutely! No one jumps out of bed, claps their hands, and says "Let's go cover some content!" https://t.co/vYWvR1oCsK
A5: "I have too much content to cover" - meanwhile 35 Ss drool like zombies from 1950s style desks.
Oh Jerry! You must join every Mon. nite at 8CST. An hour of awesomeness! Teach Like a Pirate, book by
A6-Amount of homework sucks!!! especially in Elem. Should't they be working their butts off, so they can play in afternoon?
a6We don't always see the long term benefits of play so we hesitate to create more time for it. need 2 take more time to reflect
A6: barriers are Admin, who don't see the value in it. Or feel that you are just slacking as A teacher.
A6: all of these things are why we need to learn how to use the play/fun to teach the content, not as reward for listening to it!
seems to make sense. I know teachers love paperwork so making them do twice as much on weekends seems
I've never met people who think standardized testing, lots of homework,& our curriculum is awesome? Where are they? In ?
Loving this conversation! https://t.co/OTGRCBDN2z
Play is about accelerating achievement "In play, the child is always behaving beyond his age, above his usual everyday behavior ..."
A6: At home--chores! YouTube and other tech might be barriers too.
Oh, you would NOT regret it. Went last yr. & it was awesome! See you there!
right there with you- so much homework makes it hard to have down time in the evenings at home
We've got to fight the powers that be! Show them the results, and they'll follow you.
A6: It's hard to have time to have fun when Ts are being told they have to teach things for the sake of a test.
absolutely. A6 . Convinced this should happen. What can we do inside the box?
A6 amount of homework takes away play time at home.
My Ts know - It's the rule - Ss don't lose recess for punitive purposes. And it doesn't work!
A6: Time invested in building truly effective PLCs w/ focus on teaching & learning---> more effective teaching---> more time 4 play!
Q7: What are your HOPES/FEARS (if any) in promoting/participating in something like Global School Play Day? https://t.co/tJzKUtq9Vh
Done hearing what there isn't time for. Ss don't have time to sit in a class and not learn.
I'll be in IL 6/10-11. will look into it!
I just heard - Finland has 45 min. of class/15 min recess. I think that's copyable.
a7 fear: "what's the point? that's a waste of time"
AWESOME!!! Strengthening core instruction leads to less time spent in remediation--->more time to play! https://t.co/vavrliyHMk
My team has really been trying to push quality, 1st time instruction instead of tutor, remediate, after school etc
That is refreshing to hear.
ironic bc ppl consider me productive&fun...wonder how we cld incorporate the fun in our colleagues??? food for thought
OMG i so wanna to connect with ppl that inspired and changed my practice!!
A7:Hope that Ts will take a risk and let the kids play without restriction. That is hard for Ts. Sit back and watch kids figure it out
I'm terrible at inefficient staff mtgs, why should I expect a ss to behave perfectly in never ending class? A6
The more I read the more I'm going to become a parrot and quote this book! I think I've already highlighted half of every page!
A7 I'm nervous about it. I'm always telling my Ts - every instructional minute counts. Will a day like this negate what I preach?
Ugggggh I'm the worst student in un-engaging settings. https://t.co/MHNPjt2glk
I'm terrible at inefficient staff mtgs, why should I expect a ss to behave perfectly in never ending class? A6
A7 Hope: We kick over the building, take the good stuff, and run! Fear is irrational. Try, fail, adjust, retry.
A7: My hope is that all members of my school jump on board. Play is instrumental in our daily lives. Needs to be recognized.
A7 volume and chaos convincing the old Guard that this is a terrible idea. Play threatens the perfectly quiet class, busily writing
A7: Absolutely NO fears and lots of confidence for Hope. GREAT idea: GSPD!!!! https://t.co/sVzLwUgwGY
Q7: What are your HOPES/FEARS (if any) in promoting/participating in something like Global School Play Day? https://t.co/tJzKUtq9Vh
A7: Fear too many Ts need the structure of a "normal" day and really can't handle the chaos that goes with play.
That just means you're normal.
It's also hard for Ss who have been steeped in sit-and-get; can be resentful when answers aren't freely given.
don't shift amount of what you teach, change how you teach it. 😀Give them opportunities to move around & collab.
A7. Hope that other Ts will want to be involved. Hope that P with will be supportive. Hope Ss find value.
A7: I FEAR ppl would roll their eyes & say, "Oh brother..."
I HOPE ppl would join in, see the value, & have...FUN!
A7: That Ts and admin see the value/need/civic responsibility of incorporating play that there is no longer need for a "Play Day".
A7 My hope would be that all involved in Global Play Day would have it reinforce their mindset about the value of play in life.
helping T use more effect strategies, T observing other T, grade level planning
Twice as much ineffective teaching still = not a ho lot of learning. Yeah, I said ho lot. https://t.co/VyrXE04qAa
It doesn’t help that most of the time the entire teaching method is just “If they do enough, eventually they’ll get it.”
Can mental play be just as important as physical play? Don't want to presume
They'll come around eventually... or retire...
Agreed. I fidget a lot during sit-down-and-receive PD. I wasn't like that as a HS S though.
I get sooooo much doodling done, though. Seriously so much creativity going on. Not participating, but still.
Got to go!!! Great chat, topic, and moderating! Good night Gracie!!!!
MOST effective way is effective PLC teams where focus is evidence of student learning & collaboration.
Right. I don't sit still in my own classroom. I'm going to start bringing coloring books and call it therapy.
loved tonight! Fun & great mod ! I felt the hugs in TN!
Thanks for the great chat again . I have to get a tired 2.5 yr old to bed. We made time to play tonight!
We need more Tinas in this world!
TY for a great chat ! There is still time to share your winter pics/vids with my class on their Padlet: https://t.co/hYDb5Hj1U4
TY for a great chat ! There is still time to share your winter pics/vids with my class on their Padlet: https://t.co/hYDb5Hj1U4
A7: Hope - make a more JOYFUL campus!
Absolutely -- they hit different targets, but both are essential, either in school or not-school settings. https://t.co/HC3hIEBCur
Can mental play be just as important as physical play? Don't want to presume
Oh no! Everyone that goes to should clearly be periscoping or live tweeting so we can see what we missed!
A7 hope! Need to teach the whole person, play reaches into parts normal ed can't get to. opens that possibility
A7: I'm hoping that anyone who takes part will see the passion, enthusiasm, & creativity that arises & starts to implement play more!
We did a for our ms 287 Ss played at once in our fine arts center. Was awesome.
Thanks for a great discussion tonight
thank you I feel both are refreshing and energizing during the day as well
Heading over to though I should be heading to bed! I am excited to learn! Come join!
A4. Play simulates social skills, communication, self regulation & how to respond when confronting emotions, particularly in games
Thank you for your contributions! Great stuff!
You did an awesome job moderating ! Thanks for a great chat...Looking forward to
Join us tomorrow night at 7pm EST for the , as we take on - Play! New Q's! Check them out first: https://t.co/XEPqcN0sxO
Unstructured play means time to create "unexpected juxtapositions" (David Kelley of ) true for business, too!
It's not one more thing. It's the thing!
I was like that starting in 7th grade math class. Which is how I became a history teacher.
That is some impressive infrastructure!
