-
glad to be here - on EST tonight
-
...and glad to have you here, Craig!
-
I've been following all the activities (& antics) and am disappointed at the lack of attention/focus given to issues in ed.
-
With Twitter being mentioned so much in these elections maybe we can get candidates to read/join & see what we have to say.
-
Thus, tonight's topic: A Tweet or Two About Education Issues to the Candidates Running for President of U.S.
-
-
I'll mention an issue & then invite you to share a comment/thought/position you want the candidates for US President to hear
-
Excited for tonight's chat!! , are your tweets showing up in the feed?
-
I couldn't agree more. Why I wrote two blog posts about it. https://t.co/Iob93xFFqQ
-
-
I've been following all the activities (& antics) and am disappointed at the lack of attention/focus given to issues in ed.
-
Yes! Tonight it seems to be working. ;)
-
As always, I start with a Tidbit. Here is tonight's...
-
Tidbit: Since 1972 The Iowa Caucuses have been the 1st major electoral event of the nominating process for President of US
-
PLS. NOTE: Although we may not agree on all issues, I expect everyone in to use their voice with civility & respect for all.
-
Very exciting news on Good to see the US involved & voting, whichever side they're on!
-
Definitely!! Great voter turnout!
-
Once again, I'll mention an issue & invite u to share a comment/thought/position u want candidates for President to hear
-
I've opened a tab just to read 's tweets because I don't see them in the feed. https://t.co/f6LFYZ1m0O
-
-
Excited for tonight's chat!! , are your tweets showing up in the feed?
-
-
-
Again??? Bummer...is there a conspiracy re: ??? ;)
-
-
Good evening Scott from Texas along with Rocky and Bullwinkle

This happened another time when Twitter was having palms.
-
Monica from Coquitlam BC jumping in. Sorry I'm late!
-
This happened another time when Twitter was having palms.
-
-
I'm having the same problem! Good suggestion.
-
-
-
I feel like we are testing our resiliency tonight... LOL
-
-
having to reload to see tweets-
-
from "I'll mention an issue & invite u to share a comment/thought/position u want candidates... to hear "
-
They have talked about free college, but not much about K-12. Why I wrote: https://t.co/oyGoYoZfkM and followed with
-
What would you like to say to candidates about high stakes testing.
-
from "Q1: High Stakes Testing "
-
-
if you follow you can see the Qs for some reason when i retweet it doesn't show on feed
-
Alison Walton from Washington state - looking forward to my first chat about resilience!
-
from "What would you like to day to candidates about "high stakes testing?"
-
A1 I'd tell them it's a bad idea. Why? Because I tested poorly all throughout K-12. Didn't reflect how smart I was.
-
Hi Alison! DO join in! We are doing something to have our voices heard in the political arena.
-
A1: What data supports HST as a valid or reliable method to evaluate students, teachers, or schools?
-
A1 My official position on high-stakes testing is .
-
A1: there are many ways to measure evidence of learning. Testing is only 1 aspect. Leave it mainly local.
-
I had terrible test anxiety and threw-up all over my SATs!!! I hated testing!
-
-
a1 some testing is fine but high stakes takes away from the joy of teaching & learning takes away agency for both Ts and Ss
-
A1: They are often unfair and disadvantaged ss always get the short end of the stick
-
A1 To make it not high stakes. No one test should have such significant implications; for Ss, Ts or districts.
-
-
Sorry to jump out but no luck with the feed. Will try another device - if I'm not back have a great chat!
-
The operative word is "balance."
-
I took ACT and only got an 18.Retook and went up to 21. My Rhetoric instructor asked if I was sick that day.
-
-
A1: high stakes just tells how well you perform under pressure. It doesn't highlight the entire picture.
-
A1 learning to pass a test, and teaching to a test in memorization and regurgitation. This is not the same as learning!
-
Sorry for the troubles tonight.
-
...and did you say "yes, sick of these tests!" ;)
-
-
I tested so badly btw 8th gr & HS that the HS counselor wanted to change all my pre-reg to lower level
-
A1 Not a fan. Stressful for my sped kids
-
Here's the next topic to give your two cents...
-
Q2: Charter Schools/Parental Choice
-
A1: When I taught the Newcomer class I was terrified of testing that would be tied to teacher evals. or salary. I thought...
-
No. But I didn't figure some things out until I was an adult.
-
What would you like candidates to hear from you regarding Charter Schools/Parental Choice
-
from "Q2: Charter Schools/Parental Choice "
-
from "What would you like candidates to hear from you regarding Charter Schools/Parental Choice"
-
You are my hero--once again. THX for covering for me! I owe you big-time!!!
-
A1 I couldn't figure out analogies A is to B as C is to... Or flipping shapes. Puzzling to me.
-
https://t.co/dn9DzFih9d
-
-
A1 a test is a snapshot of what that Ss knows in that one moment in time - on specific info, in a confined format. Too structured!
-
A1: Testing takes away from the experience of learning and retaining that info. Makes Ss so uncomfortable too.
-
A1 There's too much testing in education. This is a generation of test takers! It is a shame.
-
A1 (b) If they look year to year to see if test scores improve, mine never would & I feared for my future & career.
-
sorry folks... Too hard to follow tonight. Here's to next week.
-
So true! Can they put "test-taking" on resumes?
-
-
I made patterns on my tests as a S. Test only tests how well you test. Indiana is pushing back on Tests.
-
...and when I taught in a small school the sample size was such that it made yr. to yr. comparisons worthless.
-
A2 I believe equitable (not equal) funding for all public schools should be our goal. Charters/choice meaningless otherwise.
-
Sorry can't join the conversation. When change doesn't benefit sts what is going on. Thoughts here
https://t.co/jAMtoTgEmP
-
A1 (2) I think there are better ways to measure student learning.
-
A2 I don't have experience w/ charter schools.We don't have one.But we have 2 private K-8 schools.So some Ps get to choose.
-
. How will they met the needs of sped kids?
-
-
-
-
A2: school choice is foundational to conservative platform. Charters are only useful if they undergo same scrutiny as public
-
A2 Charter schools... They pretend it's parental choice but not so much. Neither Kid O nor Kid Q would get in.
-
-
Q2 in favor of, but not a silver bullet. We have to make our schools a place Ss want to be- that is a real magnet!
-
...and how about adding your voice to the next issue...
-
A2 What we need is education equality. Repeating self... https://t.co/2fJgw1sFLC What we need is education equality.
-
Q3: Common Core/National Standards
-
How do you feel about the Common Core/National Standards?
-
A2 What we need is to allow communities to have open stewardship over schools. Not millionaires.
-
from "Q3: Common Core/National Standards"
-
A fascinating conversation happening on ! Sorry, but I have to go teach. Look forward to next week.
-
-
Thanks for stopping by, Adam!
-
A2 Public Schools must learn from charter schools in terms of Parental engagement.
-
from "How do you feel about the Common Core/National Standards?"
-
A3 cc/national standards should guide the sequencing of learning - but need to personalize content to Ss and Ts passions
-
Hasn't the privitization of the classroom always been through teacher financing?
-
A2b choice is working for some S dist in Indiana- the ones that are drawing families. Hurt poor performers though
-
First I've ever heard of that.
-
A3 I have no personal experience with as I work in an independent school, but oppose attaching high stakes.
-
Interesting point and perspective.
-
A3: They sound good in theory, but as NY has shown the country, assessing and providing resources to meet stan=unrealistic
-
A3 I've mixed feelings about CCSS. Being from MA, I don't think the frameworks are so different from what we've been doing.
-
Can someone repost the questions. None are appearing on my feed/only responses...
-
A3: CCLS/National Stands, Tell me again how these help students? Kids need quality time w professional Educators who care.
-
A3 Despite usefulness of shared lang & expectations MO has already cut bait & run. Feds need to cont to fund free resources
-
Lots of things in ed. always sound gd in theory. It's the implementation that messes up.
-
Joining late and can't find the questions. Can someone retweet please?
-
A3 I also wish many many more actual teachers had been much more involved in developing from the earliest days.
-
Q3: What is your position on Common Core/National Standards?
-
That's how I feel about most ed. policy--wish teachers were involved in the creation of them and not politicians.
-
Q2. Also, neighborhood schools have to market to communities and families by telling the positive stories.
-
Unfortunately, isn't showing up in the feed. I'm restating for her.
-
Thanks Sara...would you mind sharing #1 & 2?
-
no such thing as equity! Our school IS poorer and outperforming and drawing Ss in- hard work and relationships
-
YES! There are so many positive stories--many that focus on resilience!
-
-
Q1 asked about High stakes testing. Q2 asked about Charter Schools/Parental Choice.
-
Right? For some, ready to leave Newcomers, the practice made sense, but for most... They couldn't read!
-
A3 Common doesn't fit education! Children are people not machines. Get out of the standardization, opt for personalization.
-
Q2. When asked if LittleMissM attends a "good school," my answer is always "yes, it is very good for her."
-
teaching just to standards is mediocrity- standards are the bottom of expectations not the top!
-
The next topic I think candidates need input on...
-
Q4: Teachers: quality/compensation/preparation/etc.
-
I agree w/ in theory;I live on island w/high transient population.Sometimes it makes sense for common baseline.
-
-
from "Q4: Teachers: quality/compensation/preparation/etc."
-
What would you like to say to candidates about Teachers: quality/compensation/preparation/etc.
-
-
Sorry about the "etc." getting chopped up the way it did in the tweet
-
from "What would you like to say to candidates about Teachers: quality/compensation/preparation/etc."
-
A4 Look for quality teacher prep; don't arbitrarily dis all schools of ed.
-
I see the prob in ed as a commit prob- in USA we let the pendulum swing & never just use what works best for Ss. EcLeCTic
-
A4: Professional educators are worth their weight in gold, and oh so resilient!
-
Yes. Some are good and some have room for improvement.
-
A4: Leaders should not be allowed to address teacher quality unless they can expound on what "teacher tired" feels like.
-
That is an understatement!! ;)
-
A4:Diversify teaching force. SS should have TS that look like them. We need programs to recruit TS of all genders and races
-
A4 I think teacher compensation should be more in line with other professions requiring similar levels of training.
-
A4: we are doing some of our best preparation that we've ever done thru internships & embedded learning while in training.
-
A4 Compensation ought to correspond to that of any other professional. Teachers work very hard.
-
How about we remember that our Ts are the critical infrastructure for many of our Ss
-
joining super late but just made it home Letty from California
-
Good point. "Walk a mile in my shoes..."
-
A4 The vast majority of teachers *are* of good quality and don't want the (3%?) of bad teachers any more than anyone else.
-
Welcome home and welcome to . Good to have you here!
-
-
A4 I also feel like I'm mostly stating the obvious. Why should the obvious have to be stated?
Hmmmm?
-
Increase loan repayment amounts for TS working in Title I schools
-
I wish the public understood this!!!
-
Okay friends, this tired teacher is getting exhausted jumping around to piece feed together. Calling it a night. Thanks all!
-
A4 It's about time for teachers to be compensated right! No excuses.
-
mentor those who need to grow/support where needed
-
I wish the media made it easier for the public to understand this.
-
Really!!! Reminds me of research that is "DUH"--like Ss are better able to learn when they get a gd night's sleep.
-
A4 teacher quality does not equate to test scores of Ss. So many factors...
-
Thanks for trying to hang in there. Hopefully Twitter will get it together for next week's
-
Thanks for a good chat. Sorry seemed crippled by Twitter. Have to speak tomorrow - need to go to bed.
-
Let's move to give our "two cents" to the next issue...
-
Q5: Every Child Succeeds Act (ESSA) / Education Policy
-
Thanks! Good luck tomorrow!
-
from "Q5: Every Child Succeeds Act (ESSA) / Education Policy"
-
good night- ready to Pursue Excellence again. Ss need relationships and high expectations. Not every1 needs college-trades!
-
Q5: I feel strongly that educators/teachers should be asked for input on ed. policies when being developed.
-
A5 not sure what act states, but from title: it will never happen if structures/funding not put in place to support Ss
-
I'm still here just can't get the tweets to come through, maybe I'm supposed to take a break, lol!
-
Q5: I also think that so many policies may sound good in theory but fail in implementation.
-
A5 Administrators must take responsibility to support their staff in the constant trial and Error! Meaningful PD!
-
-
YES!!! ...and not to expect things to change overnight. Change takes time.
-
-
A5 From what I can tell, ESSA is too little change from NCLB and not sufficiently uncoupled from high stakes.
-
-
Agreed. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
-
A4. Some of the best PD is on social media & blogposts. Prepare baby bird new teachers to better curate what they need.
-
Yes, I am a true convert to social media.
-
-
Q6: Other--What would you like to say to candidates re: education that hasn't been said yet on ?
-
A5: On ESSA, we need to stop chasing bad Ed policy. If you have to threaten people, how on earth can that be good for kids?
-
from "Q6: Other--What would you like to say to candidates re: education that hasn't been said yet on ?"
-
A6 I would like them to tell me concrete plans about K-12.
-
A6 Visit schools. Talk to teachers, students, parents. Get a first-hand sense of what's working and what isn't.
-
...is this asking too much--really!!!
-
Before we leave tonight...
-
I've been perplexed by how regularly teachers are not asked for input on important educational decisions
-
from "Before we leave tonight..."
-
-
A4 My mom was pro Israel. Her colleague pro Palestine. But in total agreement about their contract.
-
A6 learning w/ Ss is a passion - feed the passion and fund supports needed and the accountability will take care of itself
-
-
-
-
-
-
Yeah, me, too. I always loved that picture. BTW, my dad taught Chicago City Colleges. Also strong union.
