Q2 By definition, specialized schools limit their focus. What do you believe are pros and cons to this approach? #TnEdChat
  • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
True...been to both and had same thoughts. #tnedchat
    In reply to @hollowayreader, @STEMcha, @LNSTEMAC
  • nathan_stevens Mar 27 @ 8:11 PM EDT
A1 my sons go to specialized schools. It is interesting. Opportunists that others do not get #tnedchat
    In reply to @tonydonen
  • Gregbagby - Moderator Mar 27 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A2) I love the singular focus in schools but I hate the limited capacity of them all. #TnEdChat
  • nathan_stevens Mar 27 @ 8:13 PM EDT
My youngest son goes to a play-based school #TnEdChat
    In reply to @tonydonen
  • nathan_stevens Mar 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2 some specialty school cut out the arts #tnedchat
    In reply to @tonydonen
  • tfuhrman Mar 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2: Similar to pros and cons of some liberal arts vs. specialized university programs—generalized, breadth vs. depth (in some cases), and I value both. #TnEdChat
  • tonydonen Mar 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2) Allows for a common focus that helps capture content in a meaningful way. You can really bring the work to life! But with focus comes more limited options for students, especially in extra-curricular. #TnEdChat
  • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
Really need more schools with narrow focus OR schools within schools. BUT, I still think there is room for a variety of students in a specialized school because those Ss may not really know what their focus might be...rambling, I know...that's my specialization #tnedchat
    In reply to @Gregbagby
  • tonydonen Mar 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
#TnEdChat Well said. There is value in both!
    • tfuhrman Mar 27 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A2: Similar to pros and cons of some liberal arts vs. specialized university programs—generalized, breadth vs. depth (in some cases), and I value both. #TnEdChat
  • tfuhrman Mar 27 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A2b) Sometimes specialization as an option/choice within the school has greater value than predefined specialization, allowing students to own the choice of either. #TnEdChat
  • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:16 PM EDT
Yep, on the same page. #tnedchat
    In reply to @tfuhrman
  • tonydonen Mar 27 @ 8:17 PM EDT
    Q3 coming up in 1 minute.... #TnEdChat
  • hollowayreader Mar 27 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: pros: clear vision, focused learning Cons: could exclude some opportunities #tnedchat
  • michellesbettis Mar 27 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2 As a parent, I like the personalization of a specialty school. I really think the pros outweigh the cons. #TnEdChat
  • tonydonen Mar 27 @ 8:18 PM EDT
Q3: Do you believe that it is easier for a specialized school to engage a child? Why or why not? #TnEdChat
  • Gregbagby - Moderator Mar 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A3) specialize schools have to work a little harder because their specialty will appear to get old for some of the students. #TnEdChat
  • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A3 I have been to a "specialized" school...not one mentioned earlier...that I did not think did a great deal to specialize. I think some get the name recognition and aren't very forward thinking which results the Ss not getting anything different than anywhere else #tnedchat
  • hollowayreader Mar 27 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A3: sepcialized schools can increase engagement but that all depends if it is meaningful work. Students must believe in the work and take ownership. Otherwise, it's just going through the motions #tnedchat
  • tfuhrman Mar 27 @ 8:22 PM EDT
A3: I think it depends on a child’s personal investment in the learning, the child’s interest in and affinity with the specialization, and the means by which the student is empowered to be engaged. #tnedchat
  • tonydonen Mar 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3) A specialty school doesn't just engage a child because it has a focus. It must go above and beyond to connect that focus with a child's curiosity or it won't be any more engaging than anywhere else #TnEdChat
  • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:23 PM EDT
A3b on the other end, @WMS_BOBCATS does not have a specialized designation but I think we do a good job of providing enrichment opportunities that might be different elsewhere BUT I want to see those same opportunities during the day #tnedchat #westbobcats
    • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:20 PM EDT

#TnEdChat Yes! Agreed. Name on the building doesn't make it engaging!

A3 All educators are challenged to engage their Ss; however, specialty schools are able to offer unique opportunities tailored for their Ss needs. Everything points back to personalization. #TnEdChat
  • tonydonen Mar 27 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Q4: If you had the opportunity to open and lead a specialty school, what would the vision of your school be? #TnEdChat
  • MickShuran Mar 27 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Something we are moving more towards with our #WestBobcats...gaining momentum, people see the enthusiasm #tnedchat

A4) Well, I did ;-) @STEMcha vision - to develop a world class paradigm for schools where students critically think, collaborate and innovate in order to be self-sufficient learners that lead our communities. #TnEdChat
  • mathituplintz Mar 27 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Q4: Is it weird that I'd want to ask my kids this question before answering? I'd want to know what the underrepresented kids I see every day think is worth learning and see how we can respond to that meaningfully. #TnEdChat @tonydonen
  • Gregbagby - Moderator Mar 27 @ 8:30 PM EDT
