Ryan White. Lead #edtech learner at #floydpln. Looking forward to the #fcsclassic on Friday! It's a lot of work, but our teachers get a lot out of it.
Hey, #TECHtalkGA! I'm Angela, Dist ITS for MS/HS in #forsythpln and also a French 1 teacher for our virtual academy.
Before students show up, I need to actually get some content into my platform!!
Good evening #TECHtalkGA friends. My list is large, but I would like to get all our digital instructional programs and services to have all accounts provisioned, either with an SSO or as close as possible, and related professional learning planned. đ”
Bridget Bryson - ELA teacher @DeSanaMiddle in Forsyth. I need to finish scanning all my classroom books into the Booksource app and get as many as I can covered with contact paper đłđđ #TechTalkGA
#TECHtalkGA Q2: One of the first things that @shakeuplearning talks about in the WHAT of dynamic learning is the need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Being a leader is often uncomfortable as it is. How do you model this as you approach being a digital leader?
A1 #TECHtalkGA
Pam Pettyjohn, instructional technology coordinator, #onewhitfield I've got to get the "Tech Tips While You Tinkle" Back to School edition out!!
A2: To me this all starts with a change of mindset. You have to be a positive risk taker. You have to see that big picture and be able to communicate it clearly. #TECHtalkGA
A1: Clint Winter Instructional Technology Coordinator Elbert Co. Schools. Get our Clever badges for our primary students, get all of our rosters syncing #TECHtalkGA
A2 I try to show teachers that weâre constantly learning and we can learn together. I have been known to lead a session where I teach myself the content as I teach the participants. #TECHtalkGA
#TECHtalkGA A2: I try to let Ts know when I *am* uncomfortable, when I fail, when I have to rework something.
I used to think that my leaders always got it right the first time. I know now that's not true.
It's important to share the "grows" of leadership, not just the "glows"
#TECHtalkGA Q2: One of the first things that @shakeuplearning talks about in the WHAT of dynamic learning is the need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Being a leader is often uncomfortable as it is. How do you model this as you approach being a digital leader?
A2: Iâm not really a âleaderâ, but I do like to get out there and try âstuffâ - and then share what worked or didnât work. Last year I hosted a monthly Google Teacher Tribe to help others learn alongside me. It was hard to host because Iâm still learning it all too! #TechTalkGA
A2 #TECHtalkGA
In #fcsdot, we are constantly changing as technology advances. Whether it's switching to a new website host, new initiatives, or upgrades to our SIS, there's never a moment to be comfortable b/c we want to provide the best for our district.
A1 #techtalkga Hey ya'll, Christy here. InsTech Specialist for the district among other duties. There are lots on my to-do list but one focus is to organize and plan for our professional learning.
A2: I've had to get comfortable approaching admin with possible tech solutions and offer myself up for potential training sessions. Definitely had to get over my fear of rejection, or tweaking my initial vision! #techtalkGA
#TECHtalkGA A2: I allow myself to be human.
Even in a leadership role, I allow myself to make mistakes, to ask for help, to learn and grow, to laugh and be passionate. Leadership does not mean perfection. I am more effective the more authentic a leader AND human I can be.
#TECHtalkGA Q2: One of the first things that @shakeuplearning talks about in the WHAT of dynamic learning is the need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Being a leader is often uncomfortable as it is. How do you model this as you approach being a digital leader?
#TECHtalkGA Q3: âDynamic learning requires that we let go of the trad ideas that we have about school & educationâ (@shakeuplearning, p. 35).
I think the same is true for dynamic digital leaders. What are some ways that you have let go of the trad ideas about edtech leadership?
A2 #TECHtalkGA I have had several PL sessions facilitated by me that led in a totally different direction than the intended one. It's so powerful when we all share in the learning.
Absolutely not. I refuse to allow you to say that you're not a leader. You ABSOLUTELY are a leader.
Titles don't make leaders. Leading by example makes you a leader and putting yourself out there to learn with them is a great way to model no-fear learning!
#TECHtalkGA
A2. I model failure. There will be something I plan to teach teachers that will fail. And Iâll make it clear that it failed, try again, fail, try again. #TECHtalkGA
A2: I am pretty honest about what I am not good at...and I have learned to ask for help. I try to be open to others who ask for it as well. #techtalkga
A3: After reading the innovators mindset it opened my eyes and changed my perspective. Digital leadership gives us a chance to be creative with those that we lead #TECHtalkGA
A2: Sorry, y'all! Jumping in late. It's been a 14 hr day. Modeling, admitting to my weaknesses, and SHARING are just a few ways I try to lead. #techtalkGA
A2: Being a leader is sometimes is absolutely about being uncomfortable. It's about getting messy not knowing the answers knowing it won't perfect but do whats best for Ts, s, and be ok with asking for help, and say I don't know but I will find out #techtalkga
A3 Ts are just like Ss. They arenât doing things in their classrooms just because someone from the district says they have to. They want the why and Iâve realized how important providing that from the beginning has become. #TECHtalkGA
#TechtalkGA A3: I have been trying to connect the line between curriculum and the digital tools without using the word "tech" so much. There's always something new, but that doesn't mean we have to follow every whim. Good teaching should still be our focus....
A3 #TECHtalkGA
Leaders today can not be the masters of everything. It's not humanly possible. They have to attract, cultivate, and grow passionate people that can make big impacts.
A3. I serve every student, faculty and staff in my bldg. Itâs not about me - itâs about them. Thatâs not innovative ed leadership. Itâs just leadership. #TECHtalkGA
A3: I'm still working hard at making sure the laptop isn't just an expensive pencil and to be meaningful in the use of technology in my classroom in order to cultivate critical thinking and curiosity in my students. #techtalkGA
A3: connects with what @JustMewborn and @MmeBurgess are saying - tech leaders arenât necessarily the ITS in school. They are the teacher trying new things and sharing. They are the kids who discover something new. We are all leaders in this - even me đ #TechTalkGA
#TECHtalkGA A3: @ShakeUpLearning also says that real learning can happen anywhere/anytime, & doesn't have to be formal.
I want to apply these practices to the PL that I offer schools by honoring informal learning.
Even more, encourage others to lead the learning. Not just me.
A3: As digital leaders we have to be flexible and also teach flexibility. Great discussion last week with @MarkWilsonGA about the power of your district or schools on videobank for first year teachers for 4-5 minute examples for things. #techtalkga
#TECHtalkGA Q4: Ch. 9 of the @shakeuplearning book is all about unleashing creative thinking in the classroom. But sometimes, Ts need to see it before they can do it.
As a digital leader, how do you go beyond the structure & â1 right answerâ w/your Ts?
A1: Hollie Sisk, Georgia Southern Univ COE Instructional Services Coordinator. One thing I need to do is get my space put together. It has been painted and furniture delivered today. #techtalkGA
#TECHtalkGA A3: Letâs be honest here...
We need to embrace that #edtech leadership has NOTHING to do w/ technology. Or curriculum.
We represent innovation, growth/flexible mindset, #failup. We bring #personalizedlearning to the table. We are the flag bearers of #studentsfirst.
A3 #TECHtalkGA letting go of trad... donât force the newest and/or most fancy tool or app, help teachers squeeze the most use and creativity out of tools they are comfortable with, theyâll move on from there soon enough.
A4 I love using things like the Discovery Library in @Flipgrid and the activities in @Seesaw Itâs a way for Ts to see beyond the possibility of the one or two examples I have time to share. #TECHtalkGA
A4 #TECHtalkGA@jdayedu and I recently discussed the difference in @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, and @RecapThat. There is a lot of overlap in these tools, and it's all in how you use them based on the lesson instead of what's "shiny"
A3: As a leader I am trying to focus on identifying with my users and truly have empathy for their hesitation or resistance to integrating tech. Could be time, energy, confidence, etc. Trying to build relationships 1st. #FanTheFlames#techtalkGA
A4: from a T perspective, Iâd say weâre frustrating because we WANT 1 right answer-itâs easier to learn and easier to teach, right? But we need to be given problems with a variety of answers. Make us consider and explain why we made our choice, then find another way #TechTalkGA
A4. #TicklingTech Tuesdays let teachers come by on their free period and try something out w handouts. Weâve covered items like âGoogle Like a Rock Starâ. Plus I bribe them w food. #TECHtalkGA
A4: #techtalkga I think that the question(s) should be what are you trying to achieve with your students? How can technology modify and redfine what that may look like?
A4: I love talking with my team (and the rest of my #PLN) about how we all solve the same problem in a variety of ways. The more we get outside of our silos and engage with our community, the better equipped we are to meet the needs of our students. #techtalkGA
#TECHtalkGA A4: It wasn't possible last year, but this year I'm hoping to offer more choice and inquiry-exploration when I visit schools.
This ends up looking like chaos to a random visitor but it's structured & can show Ts a way to maybe do the same in their CRs.
#TECHtalkGA Q5: Last question! Another way to encourage dynamic learning is to empower Ss.
As a digital leader, how do you empower the Ts in your district or building to take ownership of their learning, to take risks, to become leaders themselves?
Great point about getting outside our four walls. Purposefully grow your #pln to see what's out there, to get inspired, and learn how others are battling the same issues you are.
#TECHtalkGA

A2: Woth all learning and instructional opportunities I make sure I connect concepts and ideas for the learners. By doing so I feel their learning will be more meaningful. #gwinchat#TECHtalkGA
A4: To foster this kind of thinking it is great of they see it in action. Everyone can be creative if they set their mind to it. It's all about hooking the audience @elizihle@PrincipalVCMS#TECHtalkGA
That's the term that I use too!
"Shiny"
Just because it's "shiny" doesn't mean it's good.
WHY do you want to use it? Answer that then pick the right tool! Not just the shiny one!

Hey #TechTalkGA! Do you want to improve your coaching skills? Join us on Sept. 26-27 in Alpharetta at @MPCSPatriots for The Impact Cycle Workshop to learn Jim Knightâs Coaching Cycle. https://t.co/1h1sPXVUMx
#TECHTalkGA A5: Using tools like the #SLEI and #FutureReadyLibs, I am trying to encourage media specialists to lead from the library....to get involved in local meetups and to attend @glma events.
A3: As a leader I am trying to focus on identifying with my users and truly have empathy for their hesitation or resistance to integrating tech. Could be time, energy, confidence, etc. Trying to build relationships 1st. #FanTheFlames#techtalkGA
A5 #TECHtalkGA@edcamprome and @FCSclassic are our biggest opportunities for our Ts. I would also argue that #fcslevelup encourages teachers to begin the journey of becoming a leader by purposefully growing his/her professional knowledge.
A3: The best way to let go of anything is to first understand the vision for the change or modification to the instructional process. Once thatâs fully understood itâll be easier to let go of âtraditionalâ learning. #gwinchat#TECHtalkGA
A5 Iâve offered âplay datesâ with different tech items. (Not software but hardware like robots and maker space) and allowed Ts to play. No training session, no presentation. Just play time. They leave with ideas that they came up with and someone to support them. #TECHtalkGA
A5: I experiment & âbravely goâ whenever I can-and always share the results. Itâs lead to other teachers trying new things, and so we all grow. I learn from @GTeacherTribe, @ShakeUpLearning, @Twitter chats and finds, then I experiment and share, then others try... #TechTalkGA
Great chat tonight, #TECHtalkGA! Thanks to everyone who participated! Weâll be back in mid-August for real!
If you want you or your dist tagged, fill out this form! https://t.co/GIYJGx1959
A4: The sane way I did with my Ss in chemistry, âtwo roads converge...doesnât matter which route you take as long as we arrive at the same placeâ. Some need scenic and some need peach passes. Itâs okay to take the route that speaks to you. #gwinchat#TECHtalkGA
#TECHtalkGA A5: Sometimes we need to remember that we are not just teachers, but co-learners with our students. How do we model that learning is valuable if we don't continue to learn?
#TECHtalkGA A5:
I've been trying to encourage school-based ITSs to take on a greater role in PL for their school, present at DCD or other confs like #GaETC18, or even just to pursue micro-credentials, new tools, new books, etc.
This is still a work in progress though, like me :)
#TECHtalkGA Q5: Last question! Another way to encourage dynamic learning is to empower Ss.

A5: You have to start by acknowledging their strengths and celebrate successes no matter how big or small. Again when we encourage our Ts > innovative & engaging lessons > Ss are empowered. Read the book Lead with Culture, by @JayBilly2. #CultureMatters#techtalkga
#TECHTalkGA A4: I struggle w/ this often.
I think it has nothing to do w/ correcting the trad approach. And we do not need to handhold anyone.
I think the real solution is to teach our teachers how to have vision, to shift to growth mindset, to embrace AND enjoy change.
A5: I try to be selective about what I bring back to others to share, so I know what will engage other Ts the most. I learn who might have their door "cracked open" for me and is willing to engage and explore to a greater degree. #techtalkGA
Playgrounds at @iste are great w huge variety. At school, I usually only have one or two things to try at a time but itâs lovely to just try w no expectations. #TECHTalkGA
Thank you for an excellent and thought-provoking #TECHTalkGA, @MmeBurgess! What a perfect way to kickstart back-to-school season!
(Now if we could start moving away from antiquated agrarian models of the school year, that would be GREAT... đ ) #GAED
A5: Iâm hoping my self paced digital learning badges works this year! Iâm also hoping my SMART (Students Making Analyses in Real Time) Tech Team will provide quality feedback to Ts who use Web 2.0 tools in class. #TECHtalkGA#gwinchat
#TECHtalkGA
This is something that I think many of us struggle with.
How do you handle when your own leaders come to you and expect you to be traditional edtech leadership? How do you shift that mindset in your leadership?
Sounds like everything I'm reading in @trev_mackenzie's #DiveIntoInquiry...which I am *finally* getting down to reading. (#sorrytrevor). Can't wait to let go of some reigns in my room this year and turn it over to the students!
Leadership is not synonymous with control. In fact, in my experience there is an inverse relationship between the amount of control one needs to feel powerful & their ability to influence others. This is true for teachersâ work with students & administratorsâ work with teachers.
