  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:02 PM EDT
Hey, #TECHtalkGA! I'm Angela, Dist ITS for MS/HS in #forsythpln and also a French 1 teacher for our virtual academy. Before students show up, I need to actually get some content into my platform!!
    • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:00 PM EDT
Q1: Welcome to #TECHtalkGA! Share your name/dist/role and the ONE thing you need to cross off your list before students show up again.
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:02 PM EDT
Good evening #TECHtalkGA friends. My list is large, but I would like to get all our digital instructional programs and services to have all accounts provisioned, either with an SSO or as close as possible, and related professional learning planned. đŸ˜”
  • BrysonBridget Jul 23 @ 9:03 PM EDT
Bridget Bryson - ELA teacher @DeSanaMiddle in Forsyth. I need to finish scanning all my classroom books into the Booksource app and get as many as I can covered with contact paper 😳🙄📚 #TechTalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:04 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q2: One of the first things that @shakeuplearning talks about in the WHAT of dynamic learning is the need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Being a leader is often uncomfortable as it is. How do you model this as you approach being a digital leader?
  • hodgesc Jul 23 @ 9:04 PM EDT
A1: Chuck Hodges faculty at Georgia Southern ITEC program. Must prep online classes! #TECHtalkGA
  • CLoweryITS Jul 23 @ 9:04 PM EDT
A1 Carrie, Technology Training Integration Specialist Cobb County. Still need to have some planning meetings with admin #TECHtalkGA
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:04 PM EDT
So many things I could say to this... #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MmeBurgess
  • JustMewborn Jul 23 @ 9:04 PM EDT
A1 Happy to be here. Justin Mewborn Assistant Administrator/ITS Vickery Creek Middle School Forsyth County #TECHtalkGA
  • WCSTechDiva Jul 23 @ 9:05 PM EDT
A1 #TECHtalkGA Pam Pettyjohn, instructional technology coordinator, #onewhitfield I've got to get the "Tech Tips While You Tinkle" Back to School edition out!!
  • CHamsClassroom Jul 23 @ 9:05 PM EDT
A1: Carrie // Independent school in ATL // sixth grade! I can't wait to use #GoogleSheets to redo my team's lesson planner this year! #techtalkGA
  • JustMewborn Jul 23 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A2: To me this all starts with a change of mindset. You have to be a positive risk taker. You have to see that big picture and be able to communicate it clearly. #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Jul 23 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: Clint Winter Instructional Technology Coordinator Elbert Co. Schools. Get our Clever badges for our primary students, get all of our rosters syncing #TECHtalkGA
  • Media_Barber Jul 23 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1. Hello! Robbie / Media Specialist in DeKalb. I need to create entrance decorations that will actually catch their eye to Media Ctr. #TECHtalkGA
  • CLoweryITS Jul 23 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A2 I try to show teachers that we’re constantly learning and we can learn together. I have been known to lead a session where I teach myself the content as I teach the participants. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:07 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A2: I try to let Ts know when I *am* uncomfortable, when I fail, when I have to rework something. I used to think that my leaders always got it right the first time. I know now that's not true. It's important to share the "grows" of leadership, not just the "glows"
  • BrysonBridget Jul 23 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A2: I’m not really a “leader”, but I do like to get out there and try ‘stuff’ - and then share what worked or didn’t work. Last year I hosted a monthly Google Teacher Tribe to help others learn alongside me. It was hard to host because I’m still learning it all too! #TechTalkGA
  • hodgesc Jul 23 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A2 #TECHtalkGA on being uncomfortable, be part of a team faculty (me) with teachers or admin to work through the problems or issues
  • iamryanwhite Jul 23 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A2 #TECHtalkGA In #fcsdot, we are constantly changing as technology advances. Whether it's switching to a new website host, new initiatives, or upgrades to our SIS, there's never a moment to be comfortable b/c we want to provide the best for our district.
  • christyhaskins Jul 23 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 #techtalkga Hey ya'll, Christy here. InsTech Specialist for the district among other duties. There are lots on my to-do list but one focus is to organize and plan for our professional learning.
  • CHamsClassroom Jul 23 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A2: I've had to get comfortable approaching admin with possible tech solutions and offer myself up for potential training sessions. Definitely had to get over my fear of rejection, or tweaking my initial vision! #techtalkGA
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:08 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A2: I allow myself to be human. Even in a leadership role, I allow myself to make mistakes, to ask for help, to learn and grow, to laugh and be passionate. Leadership does not mean perfection. I am more effective the more authentic a leader AND human I can be.
  • JustMewborn Jul 23 @ 9:09 PM EDT
You are a leader by the example you set. All of this sounds awesome. #techtalkga
    In reply to @BrysonBridget
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:10 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q3: “Dynamic learning requires that we let go of the trad ideas that we have about school & education” (@shakeuplearning, p. 35). I think the same is true for dynamic digital leaders. What are some ways that you have let go of the trad ideas about edtech leadership?
  • WCSTechDiva Jul 23 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A2 #TECHtalkGA I have had several PL sessions facilitated by me that led in a totally different direction than the intended one. It's so powerful when we all share in the learning.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Absolutely not. I refuse to allow you to say that you're not a leader. You ABSOLUTELY are a leader. Titles don't make leaders. Leading by example makes you a leader and putting yourself out there to learn with them is a great way to model no-fear learning! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @BrysonBridget
  • Media_Barber Jul 23 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A2. I model failure. There will be something I plan to teach teachers that will fail. And I’ll make it clear that it failed, try again, fail, try again. #TECHtalkGA
  • gabolhuis Jul 23 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A2: I am pretty honest about what I am not good at...and I have learned to ask for help. I try to be open to others who ask for it as well. #techtalkga
    In reply to @MmeBurgess, @ShakeUpLearning
  • JustMewborn Jul 23 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A3: After reading the innovators mindset it opened my eyes and changed my perspective. Digital leadership gives us a chance to be creative with those that we lead #TECHtalkGA
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:11 PM EDT
I have certainly made errors, both large and small, and have bumbled along the way, but I am much better for it! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CHamsClassroom
  • hgsisk Jul 23 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: Sorry, y'all! Jumping in late. It's been a 14 hr day. Modeling, admitting to my weaknesses, and SHARING are just a few ways I try to lead. #techtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Jul 23 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: Being a leader is sometimes is absolutely about being uncomfortable. It's about getting messy not knowing the answers knowing it won't perfect but do whats best for Ts, s, and be ok with asking for help, and say I don't know but I will find out #techtalkga
  • CLoweryITS Jul 23 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A3 Ts are just like Ss. They aren’t doing things in their classrooms just because someone from the district says they have to. They want the why and I’ve realized how important providing that from the beginning has become. #TECHtalkGA
  • gabolhuis Jul 23 @ 9:12 PM EDT
#TechtalkGA A3: I have been trying to connect the line between curriculum and the digital tools without using the word "tech" so much. There's always something new, but that doesn't mean we have to follow every whim. Good teaching should still be our focus....
    In reply to @MmeBurgess, @ShakeUpLearning
  • iamryanwhite Jul 23 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A3 #TECHtalkGA Leaders today can not be the masters of everything. It's not humanly possible. They have to attract, cultivate, and grow passionate people that can make big impacts.
  • Media_Barber Jul 23 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A3. I serve every student, faculty and staff in my bldg. It’s not about me - it’s about them. That’s not innovative ed leadership. It’s just leadership. #TECHtalkGA
  • drewpolly Jul 23 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: Drew Polly, mathematics educator, educational technologist at Univ of N Carolina at Charlotte #TECHtalkGA
  • CHamsClassroom Jul 23 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A3: I'm still working hard at making sure the laptop isn't just an expensive pencil and to be meaningful in the use of technology in my classroom in order to cultivate critical thinking and curiosity in my students. #techtalkGA
  • BrysonBridget Jul 23 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A3: connects with what @JustMewborn and @MmeBurgess are saying - tech leaders aren’t necessarily the ITS in school. They are the teacher trying new things and sharing. They are the kids who discover something new. We are all leaders in this - even me 😂 #TechTalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:15 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A3: @ShakeUpLearning also says that real learning can happen anywhere/anytime, & doesn't have to be formal. I want to apply these practices to the PL that I offer schools by honoring informal learning. Even more, encourage others to lead the learning. Not just me.
  • ClintWinter Jul 23 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A3: As digital leaders we have to be flexible and also teach flexibility. Great discussion last week with @MarkWilsonGA about the power of your district or schools on videobank for first year teachers for 4-5 minute examples for things. #techtalkga
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:16 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q4: Ch. 9 of the @shakeuplearning book is all about unleashing creative thinking in the classroom. But sometimes, Ts need to see it before they can do it. As a digital leader, how do you go beyond the structure & “1 right answer” w/your Ts?
  • edtechteach3 Jul 23 @ 9:16 PM EDT
    Jumping in late! #TECHtalkGA
  • jdayedu Jul 23 @ 9:16 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA dropping in a little late. Jaki from Floyd co.High school Instructional tech.

A1: Hollie Sisk, Georgia Southern Univ COE Instructional Services Coordinator. One thing I need to do is get my space put together. It has been painted and furniture delivered today. #techtalkGA
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:17 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A3: Let’s be honest here... We need to embrace that #edtech leadership has NOTHING to do w/ technology. Or curriculum. We represent innovation, growth/flexible mindset, #failup. We bring #personalizedlearning to the table. We are the flag bearers of #studentsfirst.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:18 PM EDT
That's one of my favorite answers! "I don't know, but let's Google it and see what we find..." #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @ClintWinter
  • hodgesc Jul 23 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A3 #TECHtalkGA letting go of trad... don’t force the newest and/or most fancy tool or app, help teachers squeeze the most use and creativity out of tools they are comfortable with, they’ll move on from there soon enough.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:18 PM EDT
I *try* to start with the WHY every time I show something new. Love the Golden Circle approach! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @CLoweryITS
  • CLoweryITS Jul 23 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4 I love using things like the Discovery Library in @Flipgrid and the activities in @Seesaw It’s a way for Ts to see beyond the possibility of the one or two examples I have time to share. #TECHtalkGA
  • iamryanwhite Jul 23 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4 #TECHtalkGA @jdayedu and I recently discussed the difference in @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, and @RecapThat. There is a lot of overlap in these tools, and it's all in how you use them based on the lesson instead of what's "shiny"
  • JustMewborn Jul 23 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Such a good read. I couldn't put it down. #techtalkga
    In reply to @CHamsClassroom, @MmeBurgess, @gcouros

Nah, we were all just 16 minute EARLY! 😆 #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @edtechteach3
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Notice that the topic for tonight specifically does NOT include the word technology? 😉 đŸ€” #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @gabolhuis, @ShakeUpLearning
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:20 PM EDT
And that, my friend, is the definition of "servant leadership"! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @Media_Barber
  • hgsisk Jul 23 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3: As a leader I am trying to focus on identifying with my users and truly have empathy for their hesitation or resistance to integrating tech. Could be time, energy, confidence, etc. Trying to build relationships 1st. #FanTheFlames #techtalkGA
  • BrysonBridget Jul 23 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A4: from a T perspective, I’d say we’re frustrating because we WANT 1 right answer-it’s easier to learn and easier to teach, right? But we need to be given problems with a variety of answers. Make us consider and explain why we made our choice, then find another way #TechTalkGA
  • Media_Barber Jul 23 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A4. #TicklingTech Tuesdays let teachers come by on their free period and try something out w handouts. We’ve covered items like “Google Like a Rock Star”. Plus I bribe them w food. #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Jul 23 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A4: #techtalkga I think that the question(s) should be what are you trying to achieve with your students? How can technology modify and redfine what that may look like?
  • RhondaStroud9 Jul 23 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Rhonda from GCPS. I’m the LSTC at Lanier HS!! Coming in late and playing fast catch up!! #TECHtalkGA #gwinchat
  • CHamsClassroom Jul 23 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A4: I love talking with my team (and the rest of my #PLN) about how we all solve the same problem in a variety of ways. The more we get outside of our silos and engage with our community, the better equipped we are to meet the needs of our students. #techtalkGA
  • RhondaStroud9 Jul 23 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A1: I need to complete my BOY docs for student computer access. #gwinchat #TECHtalkGA
  • hodgesc Jul 23 @ 9:23 PM EDT
A4 #TECHtalkGA give them examples, but then TIME, right then to collaborate and tweak, brainstorm, share
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:23 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A4: It wasn't possible last year, but this year I'm hoping to offer more choice and inquiry-exploration when I visit schools. This ends up looking like chaos to a random visitor but it's structured & can show Ts a way to maybe do the same in their CRs.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:24 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q5: Last question! Another way to encourage dynamic learning is to empower Ss. As a digital leader, how do you empower the Ts in your district or building to take ownership of their learning, to take risks, to become leaders themselves?
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:24 PM EDT
You’ve made me blush, Pam!!! â˜ș I’m not deflecting and I am being totally sincere when I say that YOU and ALL our friends in #TechtalkGA are the real heroes. You all are the #changemakers I’m just pleased to be able to watch it happen! Thank YOU for all you do đŸ€©
    In reply to @WCSTechDiva
  • iamryanwhite Jul 23 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Great point about getting outside our four walls. Purposefully grow your #pln to see what's out there, to get inspired, and learn how others are battling the same issues you are. #TECHtalkGA
    • CHamsClassroom Jul 23 @ 9:22 PM EDT

  • jdayedu Jul 23 @ 9:25 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A4 I think if teachers can "discover" rather than just being told ( same with students) the learning is more meaningful and lasting.
  • RhondaStroud9 Jul 23 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A2: Woth all learning and instructional opportunities I make sure I connect concepts and ideas for the learners. By doing so I feel their learning will be more meaningful. #gwinchat #TECHtalkGA
  • JustMewborn Jul 23 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4: To foster this kind of thinking it is great of they see it in action. Everyone can be creative if they set their mind to it. It's all about hooking the audience @elizihle @PrincipalVCMS #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:26 PM EDT
That's the term that I use too! "Shiny" Just because it's "shiny" doesn't mean it's good. WHY do you want to use it? Answer that then pick the right tool! Not just the shiny one! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @iamryanwhite, @jdayedu, @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, @RecapThat

#TECHTalkGA A5: Using tools like the #SLEI and #FutureReadyLibs, I am trying to encourage media specialists to lead from the library....to get involved in local meetups and to attend @glma events.
    In reply to @MmeBurgess, @glma

  • iamryanwhite Jul 23 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A5 #TECHtalkGA @edcamprome and @FCSclassic are our biggest opportunities for our Ts. I would also argue that #fcslevelup encourages teachers to begin the journey of becoming a leader by purposefully growing his/her professional knowledge.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Relationships are the key to EVERYTHING! Nothing changes or moves forward or gets better without establishing the relationship first. #TECHtalkGA

A5: This is a goal of mine for this year. I want to encourage the leaders in my school to become more active in sharing what they do. #TECHtalkGA
  • RhondaStroud9 Jul 23 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: The best way to let go of anything is to first understand the vision for the change or modification to the instructional process. Once that’s fully understood it’ll be easier to let go of “traditional” learning. #gwinchat #TECHtalkGA
  • CLoweryITS Jul 23 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A5 I’ve offered “play dates” with different tech items. (Not software but hardware like robots and maker space) and allowed Ts to play. No training session, no presentation. Just play time. They leave with ideas that they came up with and someone to support them. #TECHtalkGA
  • BrysonBridget Jul 23 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A5: I experiment & ‘bravely go’ whenever I can-and always share the results. It’s lead to other teachers trying new things, and so we all grow. I learn from @GTeacherTribe, @ShakeUpLearning, @Twitter chats and finds, then I experiment and share, then others try... #TechTalkGA
  • Media_Barber Jul 23 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A5. I try to provide a playground area. Teachers can come to Media Ctr & try out things - I’ll help. #TECHtalkGA
  • iamryanwhite Jul 23 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I LOVE this concept of a playground. It was a huge draw for attendees at @iste #TECHtalkGA

  • RhondaStroud9 Jul 23 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4: The sane way I did with my Ss in chemistry, “two roads converge...doesn’t matter which route you take as long as we arrive at the same place”. Some need scenic and some need peach passes. It’s okay to take the route that speaks to you. #gwinchat #TECHtalkGA
  • jdayedu Jul 23 @ 9:31 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A5: Sometimes we need to remember that we are not just teachers, but co-learners with our students. How do we model that learning is valuable if we don't continue to learn?
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:31 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A5: I've been trying to encourage school-based ITSs to take on a greater role in PL for their school, present at DCD or other confs like #GaETC18, or even just to pursue micro-credentials, new tools, new books, etc. This is still a work in progress though, like me :)
    • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:24 PM EDT

What a great chat! Thanks for providing a great motivator for the year. #techtalkga
  • hgsisk Jul 23 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5: You have to start by acknowledging their strengths and celebrate successes no matter how big or small. Again when we encourage our Ts > innovative & engaging lessons > Ss are empowered. Read the book Lead with Culture, by @JayBilly2. #CultureMatters #techtalkga
  • CatFlippen Jul 23 @ 9:32 PM EDT
#TECHTalkGA A4: I struggle w/ this often. I think it has nothing to do w/ correcting the trad approach. And we do not need to handhold anyone. I think the real solution is to teach our teachers how to have vision, to shift to growth mindset, to embrace AND enjoy change.
    • MmeBurgess - Moderator Jul 23 @ 9:16 PM EDT

  • CHamsClassroom Jul 23 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A5: I try to be selective about what I bring back to others to share, so I know what will engage other Ts the most. I learn who might have their door "cracked open" for me and is willing to engage and explore to a greater degree. #techtalkGA

A5: I’m hoping my self paced digital learning badges works this year! I’m also hoping my SMART (Students Making Analyses in Real Time) Tech Team will provide quality feedback to Ts who use Web 2.0 tools in class. #TECHtalkGA #gwinchat

I love the GREAT models of co-teaching I've seen in my district. I think this is a fantastic way to take those first baby steps! #TECHtalkGA

Those leaders are stepping outside of the traditional comfort zones to get extraordinary or different results. Not always easy to do!

#TECHtalkGA This is something that I think many of us struggle with. How do you handle when your own leaders come to you and expect you to be traditional edtech leadership? How do you shift that mindset in your leadership?
    • ehlmstech Jul 23 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3: My situation is that I have become the edtech leadership. The people I have been instructed to follow come to me with questions.

Sounds like everything I'm reading in @trev_mackenzie's #DiveIntoInquiry...which I am *finally* getting down to reading. (#sorrytrevor). Can't wait to let go of some reigns in my room this year and turn it over to the students!

#TECHtalkGA A little late to the game but totally in line with our conversation tonight. Thanks for sharing, @fastcrayon!

Leadership is not synonymous with control. In fact, in my experience there is an inverse relationship between the amount of control one needs to feel powerful & their ability to influence others. This is true for teachers’ work with students & administrators’ work with teachers.
