  • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A0: Deatra Lee, Tech TOSA @puhsd, my sister, brothers, and I held our own summer olympics. We even made medals. #IEedchat
  • jswilliams May 14 @ 10:32 PM EDT
Hello #IEedchat Joseph Williams from @puhsd Fondest childhood memories were taking the RTD anywhere. To the beach or downtown. Getting off the bus and walking to Dodger Stadium or Griffith Park. I think I learned how to walk and then my second steps were onto the RTD.
  • JSynnott1 May 14 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A0: Jonathan Synnott, Tech TOSA for Perris Union HSD. Fondest summer memory was going to the Grand Canyon with my dad and picking up a puppy on the way back (she was ours for 15 years afterwards) #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:32 PM EDT
Robert Guzman Tech Coach @CMIPerris in @puhsd Oasis Camp in Lancaster back in the 1980's, my entire family would go camping every summer. It was awesome #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 May 14 @ 10:33 PM EDT
A0: Tom Ashley, Tech Coach TOSA @PalomaValley. One of my favorite childhood summer memories was going to Tastee Freez in Perris w/my dad & brothers and collecting every Major League Baseball team helmet that they flipped upside down and served ice cream sundaes in. #IEedchat

A1: I personally have no experience with summer camps. But as a teacher and #solarcup advisor, i've known a few students who were camp counselors. These were great kids. So much fun, kindness, caring, and very inclusive. We need more students like this. #IEedchat
  • Dale_Chu May 14 @ 10:36 PM EDT

Here are our Q's for tonight #IEedchat and don't forget to check out the article for Q2 https://t.co/dQUamgd1IV
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:36 PM EDT
Cheer on the camping - we only ate what we packed in. Maybe a stop at the burger joint on the final day returning back from the mountain. #IEedchat
    In reply to @rguztec, @CMIPerris, @puhsd
  • AshleyMSJC5 May 14 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A1: I think there are too many reasons why parents send their kids to summer camp. I never went to summer camp, but I got sent to a bunch of basketball summer camps and loved them. They were never overnight though... #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 May 14 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A1: I never got to do a summer camp, but I think parents have their kids do them to keep the kids active throughout the summer. #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:39 PM EDT
Q1B:Quinn and Pollikof discuss the issue of summer learning in this article https://t.co/r7LHnJcJw4 why should we as educators take such claims seriously and what could be some detrimental repercussions in our schoosl? #IEedchat
  • judykaylane May 14 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A1: when I think of Education and camp I think of edcamps or makercamps - I went to camp as a kid and did all kinds of camping-al about the memories and special friendships you make #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:39 PM EDT
    #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:35 PM EDT
Q1: In many parts of our country parents send their children to summer camps, why do you think these parents send their children to these camps and what could be the benefits?
  • Chad_Shaner May 14 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A1 Neverdid summer camp but can see the benefits, working cooperatively, gaining independence #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:40 PM EDT
A1: Benefits are that the kids tend to learn about other things outside of school that will help them grow as individuals. But probably to give mom and dad more time to themselves #IEedchat
  • judykaylane May 14 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A1B: I liked the article and suggestions therein. Like the part about hands on - like w/maker camps - and of course reading ideas yes we should take seriously #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A1B: If what Quinn and Pollikof mention is true about Ss losing half of what they learn in the summer, then we need to create some program to have students retain and learn over summer #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 May 14 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A1B: I worry about the economic class discrepancies in reading loss more than the math losses, which are even. We can't bang on these students all year round. They need a break. #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A1: Lots of experience at camps. Attended them from grade 4-12, every year, and for two summers following I worked at them. I LOVE SUMMER CAMP. Two camps I spent these years at: Camp Oakhurst just outside Yosemite, and Hartland near Three Rivers #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:42 PM EDT
I was totally thinking the same, but I think just remembering to promote learning all year is also huge #IEedchat
    In reply to @judykaylane
  • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:43 PM EDT
Q2: Consider your current students & list possible suggestions to promote summer learning and content retention in order for them to be better prepared for the next school year? #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A1 cont'd.... Learned a ton working my way up from dishes in the kitchen to being head dinner chef at age 19. Second year I worked on the ropes crew. Big impact on how I collaborate, support and challenge both myself and peers. #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:43 PM EDT
I found it to be alarming, but the first time I heard about this loss was at CABE last year when I attended. #IEedchat
    In reply to @AshleyMSJC5
  • jswilliams May 14 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A2: To promote summer learning, I recommend the resources at Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. https://t.co/4mN3xdxaLp #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 May 14 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A1B: We should take the claims seriously because the Ss affected are the Ss we mostly teach in the Inland Area. Maybe there is a way to give Ss a break but still engage them educationally, keep their brains on learning. Thinking of our MakerCamps in @puhsd as an example #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A1b: This article has a big focus on what schools and school systems can do (in terms of programs). I agree with a lot of it. It mentions that math showed bigger decrease than reading. 1/n #IEedchat
  • judykaylane May 14 @ 10:45 PM EDT
and yet it was a good reminder for me-since we are 1:1 our kids can benefit from many online apps etc. Our Read 180 Ss can get online and read anytime and all summer if they want. I will be talking that up! #IEedchat
    • rguztec May 14 @ 10:42 PM EDT
I was totally thinking the same, but I think just remembering to promote learning all year is also huge #IEedchat
      In reply to @judykaylane
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:45 PM EDT
Wow, I totally missed that. Thanks for pointing it out #IEedchat
    In reply to @MathButler
  • AshleyMSJC5 May 14 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A2: Best thing we can do for students for summer retention: Give them customized recommended reading for enjoyment over the summer. After having them for a whole year, we can try to tailor the list for individual students. #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:46 PM EDT
I like that approach, because it tailored to their likings and not ours #IEedchat
    In reply to @AshleyMSJC5
  • JSynnott1 May 14 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A2: Promote the Summer Reading Program out of the city library. Perris has a pretty nice library; it would be great to see more Ss take advantage of it. And it's free! #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:46 PM EDT
2/n Lack of practice will cause fall back. I'm not saying students need to "practice" math over summer. But there's plenty of ways we can try to get families in on it too. Couple of easy examples: @TableTalkMath @MathOnAStick #tmwyk (talking math with your kids) #IEedchat
    In reply to @TableTalkMath, @MathOnAStick
  • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:47 PM EDT
Q2B: What are things that your school does over the summer to promote learning or what are some things they should be doing? #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:47 PM EDT
A1b: Local libraries offer summer reading programs with special events and learning opportunities. Plus, it's free. I also agree w/ @judykaylane about MakerCamps. #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:47 PM EDT
Do you think providing a list of books from the library would help? #IEedchat
    In reply to @JSynnott1
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:48 PM EDT
A2B:We do a maker camp and last year we did a mini robotics camp, this year we plan to have a maker camp and a chrome book camp to help with culture on campus #IEedchat

A2B: As a school, we have summer school and we have our makercamp. But I think many of our teachers promote summer learning to their exiting and incoming students. #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:49 PM EDT
A2: Summer reading programs, MakerCamps, job shadowing or interning in a field of interest. #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 May 14 @ 10:49 PM EDT
Yes, or at least providing a list of available books so students can see what's there. There is so much more to libraries then just the fiction section, but I think students think that's all the library has to offer, which is far from true. #IEedchat
    In reply to @rguztec
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:49 PM EDT
A2B cont.. We could do more as a school such as providing a list of suggested books by grade level and other activities to promote learning #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:50 PM EDT
    A2: This twitter stream: https://t.co/zK4sHdLlwr #IEedchat

A2 for Ts who do 20-time, offer a Summer Challenge to take their projects to their community #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:51 PM EDT
Great idea with that 20 time #IEedchat

Q3:What are some technological tools that could be utilized to promote learning over the summer to help students with reading? #IEedchat
  • jswilliams May 14 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A3: Here is a start. If your family has tech tools and you want to promote summer learning, have your kids read and talk to them about their reading. Maybe use https://t.co/IA9H331pB1 or other online sites. #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A2b: I'm sure others from @puhsd have mentioned - There's of course summer session for credit recovery or acceleration We also do @MakerCamp. And one big move of #scholarplus has been that students registered to return in the Fall get to keep their device over summer #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:47 PM EDT
Q2B: What are things that your school does over the summer to promote learning or what are some things they should be doing? #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A3: I think Ss could continue reading articles with NewsELA this way they can get content within their reading level and not lose any of that knowledge #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A2b: Our campus has summer school and MakerCamps. An idea is to work with the community to host events throughout the summer. #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3: I think this is the key question. We should give parents & students access to great self paced programs like Khan Academy for math to help reduce summer loss. @puhsd allows Ss to take their Chromebooks home for the summer so there is really no impediment to access. #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3 cont.. Simply using google docs to do a synopsis of every page in a book that a student reads in the summer. This way they have their own cliff notes #IEedchat
  • judykaylane May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3: like I said Read 180 Student Apps for those enrolled. There are also fun reading apps for YA. I just got amazon audible for road trips- kids can take advantage of some free ones even. #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:51 PM EDT
Q3:What are some technological tools that could be utilized to promote learning over the summer to help students with reading? #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3: Many students depend on school structure to meet others for the social part of their learning. Now technology easily allows for video/audio/other interaction to collaborate and learn together when not meeting in person on the daily. #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3: My step-daughter uses Khan Academy; her teacher challenges her to reach a certain percentage of completion by the end of the week. I can see this being something parents could have their kids do over the summer, such as reach a certain percentage each week #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3: Google Expeditions could be a supplement to their reading, help students visualize settings. #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
Nice, listening to your favorite stories #IEedchat
    In reply to @judykaylane

Q3B: What are some resources or tools that could be used to help students with Math over the summer and what could be the expected growth from this? #IEedchat
  • judykaylane May 14 @ 10:56 PM EDT
    good idea #IEedchat
    • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A3: Google Expeditions could be a supplement to their reading, help students visualize settings. #IEedchat
  • rguztec May 14 @ 10:56 PM EDT
A3B: From the sounds of the article in Q2, we need to focus on providing continual growth for our students in Math. The tech allows us to reach them more easily, but we need to create that culture of continual learning #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:58 PM EDT
Any final thoughts on Summer learning? #IEedchat
  • MathButler May 14 @ 10:58 PM EDT
I mentioned some earlier (https://t.co/zK4sHdLlwr) Still, the big idea = you can do @mathanywhere Get kids to look at patterns, #noticewonder (share what they observe and what questions they have). You don't have to practice calculations. Math is more than that. #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:55 PM EDT
Q3B: What are some resources or tools that could be used to help students with Math over the summer and what could be the expected growth from this? #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:58 PM EDT
A3b: Games that require logic and reasoning. #IEedchat
  • judykaylane May 14 @ 10:58 PM EDT
the Brookings article noted that: "forming partnerships with community organizations to leverage resources" #IEedchat
    • DeatraLee May 14 @ 10:52 PM EDT

FT: We need to put energy into creating some support for our Ss to continue learning even if its without their teachers. Keep it going on your own, do because you want to #IEedchat
