Trevor Williams, South Forsyth HS, Ga. Defensive Coordinator/LBs and I firmly believe coaches should follow @CoachJacksonTPW for ideas on culture. His book is AMAZING! #GAHSFBCHAT
A1: @JnashCoach started a defensive leadership group a couple of years ago and we've continued it. Seniors bring an Underclassman. We talk about leadership, expectations, life. Has been eye opening and inspiring for me as a coach. #GAHSFBCHAT
A1: I like to provide everyone with an opportunity to lead. Even the freshman. It’s done for me through your actions in practice. They don’t need to be vocal leaders, just working hard sets the tone #GAHSFBChat
Get guys in position groups to take some leadership of their groups. Help bring along younger guys allow them to figure it out on their with our guidance #GAHSFBCHAT
In the past we have done Character Building Classes. Have based from @Focus3_Team , as well as teachings from @JonGordon11 and my personal favorite @jockowillink . Kids latch on to different one #GAHSFBChat
A1. Age doesn’t determine who will lead. Freshman. Senior. Projected starter or not. It doesn’t matter. I look for someone who will attack each drill. I have an upcoming Soph who would be in the back and now he’s stepping up as a leader in the drills. #GAHSFBChat
Have also created “accountability teams” during our tough month of “Adversity April”, while throwing all kinds of wild situations at them and forcing them to respond and leaders emerge #GAHSFBChat
A1 @WoodstockFtball has a leadership council that meets to discuss issues and concerns and does leadership training. But giving the kids a chance to use that leadership morenoutside the sphere of football and school would be a great idea. #GAHSFBCHAT
We have done that the past 2 off-seasons. As mentioned in my previous answer. The buy in was solid year 1. Each coach was responsible for creating a lesson for a certain topic #GAHSFBChat
Character ed in my opinion is highly important. At a previous program we began a character ed program and I think it was beneficial #GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
A2: We don’t use a specific Character Ed program. We do have 2 Character Coaches that lead meetings after practice once a week and at pregame meals. Try to carry a character theme every week and hit on it every day in some way.
#GAHSFBChat
A2 to me, one of the Benefits is that it simplifies the code for everyone. Coaches included. When we tell a kid that wasn’t #BEST, they know exactly what we mean, and how to fix it. Anytime the message is clear and concise, everyone wins. #GAHSFBCHAT
no but i think this would be a great implement to a program, especially being a young coach this is definitely something i would like to incorporate with the permission of whichever HC i work under next #GAHSFBChat#Culture4Coaches
The big thing we have looked for is are the kids repeating our verbiage of our character program. If they are we know they are listening, then they become more intentional with actions. #GAHSFBCHAT
Haven’t really done one of these. Very interested in doing so. Throughout the season and especially in offseason really try to impart accountability on my guys and have them understand why it’s so important #GAHSFBCHAT
We used to do it every Wednesday after school. Instead of the normal supplemental after school workouts (have kids in class) we would cater to their hearts. Some (kids and coaches) have shared some emotional stuff. Got some closer. #GAHSFBChat
Our OC @CoachLReady runs our player development program in the off-season that highlights ways to improve leadership skills and ways to put them into practice ... also mentor programs #GAHSFBCHAT
A2.) last year was year 1 with the new staff. “Buy in” was last years mentality. Get the community to buy into the program. Now it’s #OwnTheMoment. Own the next 7 seconds of your life. On the field, in the weight room, class room, Saturday night. Whatever, wherever. #GAHSFBChat
A3a: For varsity our captains are seasonal. With more freedom on the JV team, I change them up from game to game to allow others to step up and lead. #GAHSFBChat
Have done both in past. Normally not a big ceremony for SEASONAL captains , just OKGs (Our Kind of Guys), who are the driving force on the field and the locker room for our program #GAHSFBChat
A3. Whoever showed the leadership throughout the week is a captain. Doesn’t mean just because you’re a top player that you are automatically a captain. We did the same when I played. Rotating by who showed up to work and push others #GAHSFBChat
We have done both.
Depends on the group of kids you have.
We normally select "seasonal" kids who day in/day out prove on/off the field leadership.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A3 a) Have done it both ways. IMO it all depends on the group. This past season - We had 2 season long captains and rolled 2 new captains with them every Friday. #GAHSFBChat
A3a: Down 3 versions. All 4 for the season last year. Year b4 did 2 permanent and rotated the other 2. Though about 7 next year and rotating games #gahsfbchat
Really like them to embody the STUDENT-athlete part. Not looking for a 4.0 but a kid that works hard in the classroom and in the weight room/field. #GAHSFBChat
A3b: leadership “should” be from senior class but doesn’t exclusively have to be. Go work ethic and character in classroom, weight room, on the field and in the hallways. Don’t have to be real rah-rah #GAHSFBCHAT#Culture4Coaches
OKGs (Our Kind of Guys). Guys who are completely sold out to the mission. Guys who are “pushers and pullers “. Push their teammates to new heights and pull their teammates to where they are trying to get #GAHSFBChat
-kid who is there
-takes reps seriously
-makes others better
-not a ME guy
-treats teammates with respect
-able 2 challenge teammates who aren't doing the right things on/off the field
-if coaches weren't there could lead prx
A few of the things

This has always intrigued me. Why do people accept it should be from seniors? In any other domain, the oldest, most tenured people have no right to leadership. The best people do. The ones worthy of the role itself, who make others better, not an age. #GAHSFBChat#Culture4Coaches
A4: Our guys volunteered and helped with Field Day at a local elementary school last year. Our FCA director @KeithWag323 also has a variety of opportunities that they get to participate in as well, like Field of Dreams and a prom type event for special needs kids.
#GAHSFBCHAT
A4.)
-State Park clean up
-Volunteer Special Olympics
-A Make a Wish foundation type of thing
-Buikding playgrounds for churches
Just to name a few #GAHSFBCHAT
Has relationships with ALL teammates. Without relationship there is no trust. Then, guys who aren’t afraid to DO THE RIGHT THING ALL THE TIME. In order to be a good leader, need to be a good follower FIRST #GAHSFBChat
A5.
-attendance
-accountability
-grades
-work ethic
-pushing others
-Doing the “little work” such as getting water, unloading equipment trailer for games, anything to help out. It doesn’t matter your age/position/depth. #GAHSFBCHAT
We do Man Maker Monday! A few weeks ago, we taught them how to shake a hand firmly and the correct way with eye contact along with how to tie a neck tie. Prepare them for the future #LongTermThinking
A5) Try to find leaders that guys have already shown they will follow. Sometimes bc they are playmakers, sometimes bc they are good teammates, can be other things, but try to get those guys to be 100% w/ core values. We teach leadership, but sometimes it’s natural #GAHSFBChat
I agree with you, we attempt to build a group based on leadership potential regardless of class. However the educational -athletic setting is a little different than real world. At heart we are educators & that means attempting to bring out or build characteristics in kids, cont.

So we have a educational responsibility to attempt to teach it and is most cases sophomores just are not ready maturity wise - Juniors yes. Our bottom line is not quite the same as business or corporate world. JMHO

A6: When your best players are your hardest workers you have a chance to be special. Not necessary to be great leaders. They must align with the values, but they don't HAVE to carry the flag. #GAHSFBCHAT
Difficult question. Yes and no. I feel our best players need to good followers. But usually the best leaders are good players because they work themselves into a good player by trusting the process and the plan #GAHSFBChat
A6. I’m leaning towards a soft NO. Simply because you are buikding a program. A freshman can lead just as well as a senior and the FR may not be a starter but he is contributing to the team more than he is not just by his actions! #GAHSFBCHAT
A6 That's a great question. Having great leaders on your team is what we are striving for as coaches. But when those leaders are your best players, you have something special. #GAHSFBCHAT
A7) our mascot is the Knights - they will be MEN, Fathers, husbands, etc long after being “Knights” - if I’m not teaching them character and how to be a man, I’m doing them a disservice. For me coaching is a calling to help grow men. #GAHSFBChat
One thing I know . If you worry more about creating GOOD YOUNG MEN, rather than GOOD PLAYERS, the wins will take care of themselves. Aren’t we an extension of the classroom? Let’s teach them what being a REAL GOOD MAN is about #GAHSFBChat
my advice is to those who are or aren’t ... don’t forget to develop your character as well... our program has been just as challenging & great for me as it has been for our players!!! How can we do OUR job effectively if we don’t fill ourselves #GAHSFBCHAT
