Q1. Do you have a library in your school? Who staffs it? A certified librarian, a Classified Aid, both, or someone else? #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
Q1. Do you have a library in your school? Who staffs it? A certified librarian, a classified aide, both, or someone else? #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
A1. Our elementary school library is fully staffed by me. I am a certified teacher and librarian. I'm also very fortunate to have an assistant who works part time. She does most of the shelving, book repair, and processing. #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
Q1. Do you have a library in your school? Who staffs it? A certified librarian, a classified aide, both, or someone else? #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
I’m not in the classroom but I go to my public library all the time! The school I worked at last year didn’t have a librarian, but most places I’ve worked have had awesome librarians #Akedchat (sorry I’m late.. was at Home Depot)
A2. I believe school libraries should be the heart of the school: a place where all people come to learn and read (students, staff, teachers, parents, etc.) And the librarian is there to help those people navigate their learning and reading. #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
I loved my librarians... I’d give them a list of what we would be studying and they would find me awesome resources! #akedchat my classroom library was always circulating! It was awesome!
My assistant is full time. I imagine only having part time help is difficult. Our school district is currently looking at budget cuts and our library assistants are on the chopping block.
Q3. How have you collaborated with a school librarian? If you're a librarian, how have you collaborated with teachers? #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
A3. This is only my second year in the library, and teachers have been reluctant to collaborate. They're so busy with other aspects of their job. I have been working with one teacher though on teaching the kids about nonfiction text features to prepare for the PEAKs. #akedchat
Q4. How can librarians support all members of the school: students, staff, faculty, administration, parents, community members? #akedchat#AKlearns#schoollibraries
Collaboration is happening all the time in my school. Right now I'm working on a project with a History and an English teacher for a project where students create documentaries. I brought in a documentary professor from UAF to talk to the students #akedchat
A4. The best way to support everyone is to let them know what is available to them and how you can help as the librarian. Be approachable and accessible! Librarians can help in so many ways! #akedchat#AKlearns#schoollibraries
A3: Collaboration is a constant in my school. Right now I'm working on a project with a History and an English teacher for a project where students create documentaries. I brought in a documentary professor from UAF to talk to the students #akedchat
What a great project. I love that you brought in a community member for higher education as a mentor for the kids. Real life examples are key for students! #akedchat
Libraries are so many great online resources too! https://t.co/C8yiDeoyUv has Sesame Street e-books for kids they lots of people just don’t know about! #akedchat
Q5. What is the best way for school librarians to reach out to teachers for feedback: in person, email, online survey? #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
A4: Librarians and libraries really can help with anything the school staff, students, and parents need. The Dewey Decimal System includes pretty much everything and so can libraries! #akedchat
A5. I've tried all of these with little success. Mostly, I talk to the teachers while they're dropping off or picking up their classes. That seems to be when they have the most time to discuss. I'll keep trying! #akedchat#aklearns#schoollibraries
@AkGlobalTeacher does some amazing Skype projects with authors :) last year, I got to Skype with Trisha brown who wrote Charlie & the blanket toss. She is doing an updated version of children of midnight sin & asked my student to be featured in it :) #akedchat

Breaking in is difficult. I have been reaching out to teachers and asking if they need help or would like to collaborate. Everyone is so busy so it doesn't always work but maybe one project it will. #akedchat
Q6. What do you think is the future of school libraries? What moves should librarians, schools, and district be making toward that future? #akedchat#AKlearns#schoollibraries
My librarian saved me sooo much time finding books or websites to use as extensions in my classroom. Appreciated her so much and missed her so much when I moved #akedchat
I love that so many libraries are #makerspaces now and full of great innovative things that sometimes don’t make it to the classroom #akedchat love to follgow what they are doing at @TananaMiddle
A6. The future of school libraries: learning labs, STEM centers, technology centers, reading rooms, and the heart of every educational community. Librarians must continue to grow, change, and advocate! #akedchat#AKlearns#schoollibraries
Q7. Bonus Question (Because librarians love books after all!)
What is the best book recommended to you or a student by a librarian? If you're a librarian, what's your favorite book to recommend? #akedchat#AKlearns#schoollibraries
