Hi, everyone. This is Jody from @HudsonFallsCSD I'm a HS Science Teacher, Mom to 3 kids in the district, & @MapleLeafs fan. Happy to engage with #NYEDChat this evening. Also... kind of watching the game :)
A1: A teacher leader leads by example, engages in important & authentic discourse within their district/building, accomplished teaching practices, tries to stay current on policy & practices, has professional involvement, tries to improve, is humble, listens 1st, shares #NYEDCHAT
A1 A teacher leader is a person who is an instructional leader with vision. He/she collaborates with colleagues to find the best approaches to impact teaching and learning and conveys these to admin. Teacher leaders are respected as edus in the field. #NYEDchat
A1: A teacher leader models risk-taking, is transparent in discussing the learning journey, and inspires other teachers to try new things, too! #NYEDchat
A1 A teacher leader is someone who doesn't need a title to lead. They are positive, they find solutions, and they don't complain. It's all about mindset. I'm fortunate to work with a lot of them! #nyedchat

A2: Solid relationships are built on a foundation of trust & respect. Trust that we can freely share information, practices, questions & concerns. Respect stems from transparency, expertise, integrity. Cannot undervalue real, authentic talk. #NYEDChat
A2.2 Some of my best relationships w Ts & Admins began w informal conversations where we shared our ideas & concerns as people who cared about our schools, our kids & our communities; not as Ts & Admins. As we do w our Ss, it is a "Me WITH You" philosophy #NYedchat
A2: Teacher leaders can solidify relationships with admin/staff by taking time to LISTEN and sharing two-way communication. If you strengthen the relationship first, the path to great instruction is already paved. #NYEDChat
A1: A teacher leader is someone who inspires others to try new approaches to capture kids’ hearts and minds knowing that sometimes our first try doesn’t go exactly as planned. #nyedchat
A2 Teacher Leader learn early on that relationships need to be built in order to lead effectively. It is not solely about the captain but the crew with the captain makes for an effective team. #NYEDChat
A2 I also agree with @tamaraletter - additionally in leadership it can be extremely busy so it is important that time is scheduled to ensure that the relationships can build with administrators and teachers #NYEDChat
A2 Relationships are solidified through respect and partnership and support no matter what the role. Question should always be “ How can I help ?” #NYEDChat
A2 It's a delicate balancing act, built in trust. It's important to model that there is no hidden agenda -- the only shared agenda is to be great so all kids succeed. #nyedchat
A3: It is tough to fit everything into the day and sometimes you just can't. I like to figure out where I can do the most good, make the biggest impact & go from there #NYedchat
Jumping in late. Former English teacher; current math teacher; current administrator; and teacher educator in the NY area. I agree with @tamaraletter that listening...AUTHENTICALLY listening is the key. #NYEDchat
Teacher leaders have a unique opportunity to collaborate with both colleagues & admins in an effort to support viable professional learning opportunities that are tailored to meet the needs of educators. #nyedchat
A2 They are connectors!
They give without expecting a get.
They choose kind over clever.
They connect like-minded.
They share accurate content.
They promote others good work.
They consistently contribute.
They do not respond to negativity.
They judge less.
#NYEDCHAT
A3: I think one of the biggest struggles for teacher leaders, especially new ones, is wearing both the leader hat and the colleague hat. It’s finding your why and trusting your instincts that helped you become a leader in the first place. #nyedchat
All teachers are leaders, each and every day, in their classrooms! They lead children; learning and thinking! They are also nurturing & developers the future leaders of our country! #nyedchat
A2: I believe communication is key when it comes to solidifying these relationships. Talking informally with your coworkers can create friendships and maintaining communication will lower the likelihood of conflicts in these relationships. #nyedchat
A2 communication builds a solid base for relationships. Clearly share needs, questions, and curiosities to calibrate or line up, leading to relevant, efficient and effective problem solving with admin and instructional staff. #NYEDChat#NYEDChat
A3 When you can, choose to work deeply instead of skimming the surface and doing many “things.” As a coach you can never go wrong if you are in a classroom supporting the work of tchrs/S’s. When in doubt get in a classroom! #NYEDChat
A2: I believe communication is key when it comes to solidifying these relationships. Talking informally with your coworkers can create friendships and maintaining communication will lower the likelihood of conflicts in these relationships. #nyedchat
A4: Although sometimes a title can help, I think our greatest power to influence change comes from our credibility & the respect & trust we earn. Leading by example, being open to discussion, sharing what works AND what didn't. Being open in our reflections. #NYedchat
A3 Competing priorities in school can certainly affect the work of teacher leaders in order to gain traction in continuous improvement within the school #NYEDChat
Leadership... change... learning... and innovation don't come as a result of titles; they come as a result of relationships, vision & collaboration! #nyedchat
I agree...in the event that there is a conflict, however, appropriate collaborative strategies and structures should be in place to discuss, resolve, and progress in a respectful and supportive environment. #NYEDchat
A3- A barrier might be the balance between doing what you can do and only doing what you can do well. It becomes part of our identity to take on some many roles, that pride ourselves on... but might lose our effectiveness if spread too thin. #NYEDChat
I see teachers struggle to balance time for self-learning with classroom responsibilities. The payoff, though, with the learning is often more efficient classroom practice. #nyedchat
A3 I used to think multitasking was a good thing but lately I realize that it only spreads oneself too thin. We need to focus on specific tasks in order to build a foundation and then move on. #NYEDChat
A4: Titles are nice, sure, but it’s the work that speaks for the leader. I know plenty of folks who are leaders in school without an official title because they are willing to put themselves out there, take risks, support others, and share their powerful voice. #nyedchat
Thanks for pushing my thinking! I'd imagine coaches must be well-versed with scaffolding differentiation...for adult learners. It's easy to become comfortable...with being comfortable. The best coaches inspire us to expect more and challenge ourselves. #Nyedchat
Absolutely, Tony! When teachers are leaders in their classrooms, they model that leadership for their students - creating opportunities for student leaders too. #NYEDChat
A4 considered the formal role of principal to be a great privilege but the school culture of learning is driven by teacher leaders at @JerichoMS#NYEDChat
A4 Change comes from a concerted effort by a group of edus led by a visionary leaders. With the team in place relationships and #positivity grows. Movement from within cannot come from one person alone. Teacher leadership and teamwork are key. #NYEDChat
A3: Teacher leaders need their voices to be heard, which requires an active listener who is willing to make a mind shift and take action if necessary. Strenthening relationships and creating a strong, trusting, school culture makes this barrier easier to overcome. #NYEDchat
A5: P2P instructional rounds. In @NYSMTP we had time for unstructured discussions on a topic & I learned a lot by listening to how others approached the same situation. Also, @LisaMeade23 won me over to blogging - articulating & defending ideas is powerful #NYedchat
A4 positional power carries weight to create paths to change if the person w the title opens the door for others to join in the leadership and become a part of the process - building Leadership is ultimately strongest when its shared #NYEDChat
I would agree. It's best to understand the culture/conditions before you dive into change, especially if it's a radical shift away from "the way it's always been done." #NYEDchat
Q4 no way! Research around peer coaching compared to a top down model proves more comfortable, sustainable and user friendly(if done well☺️) systems that facilitate collaboration and connect peers are appealing. after all, a name is just a name lol #NYEDChat
I don’t think a formal title helps with impacting change I think is the feeling of being valued and supported that allows one to impact change .#nyedchat
I believe anyone can make a change in a building, no matter what their "title" or position is. I believe anyone who steps up and wants to be a leader can be. #nyedchat
And the best coaches model constant learning orientation - they are curious, always looking to strengthen and expand their own competencies, and look to make learning connections among the people they serve #NYEDChat
Yes! Coaching requires you to know someone else's strengths and guide them in those strengths to tackle new challenges. This alone provides a great realm for differentiation in the professional development process. #NYEDchat
I would agree. It's best to understand the culture/conditions before you dive into change, especially if it's a radical shift away from "the way it's always been done." #NYEDchat
A4 No it shouldn't be however it is also a case of who has been involved in the decision making process in making the case for change within a school - is decision making distributed in order for leadership to flourish #NYEDChat
Well said / and the tenor of their leadership sets the stage for the culture of the community in a school - they lead by example and at best towards decisions that benefit young people at every opportunity #NYEDCHAT
Too many responsibilities to little time that is The life of an educator in a not shell in a not shell. I think we need to work on small things and share those small things that have compounding lasting affects #nyedchat
A4: Never required. Education is now obsessed with titles and labels, we forgot what it means to lead. True leaders do not lead because of a title, many do it for service. It is a calling. Servant leadership needs to be better represented in our educational system. #NYEDChat
We read @Jenni_Donohoo collective efficacy as a leadership team and surveyed every staff using the conditions of efficacy indicators - insightful data #NYEDCHAT

A4: People vs. perception! While a title may provide the perception that someone is a leader, it's a thin mask that will eventually wear away revealing the true person inside. Let's look for the strengths that others display and have that guide our leadership coaching. #NYEDchat
A5: Evaluating why and how we meet, redefining time - a simple concept, but a powerful place to shift from receipt of information to collaborative conversations. #NYEDChat
My FAV T leader walked the walk. He CARED, listened w/o judgement, offered ideas based on MY kids (not his), opened his classroom to me. He helped me to keep perspective & encouraged me to lead. This month I will encourage others to take that step #NYedchat#Coachie#Pride
A5 Over-communicate your values. Messaging matters! Through emails, newsletters, committee meetings, social media, etc.. Continually communicate your values! #NYEDCHAT
YES - Students need a voice in decision-making, too, especially when it's their instruction we are molding! Cultivate leadership skills in our youth and you will empower them as leaders for life. #NYEDchat
Coaching also requires for the coach to be self-aware regarding his/her own strengths and weaknesses...and to demonstrate that the collaboration of the team is necessary for a greater, synergistic impact for the students. #NYEDchat

A5: What system do you have for teacher-to-teacher recognition or celebration in your school? A quick way to shift culture is to recognize greatness, and more importantly, inspire others to be constantly on the lookout for it, #nyedchat
At the start of the year, we work with our teachers on co-constructing their teaching goals - one to go on, one to glow on, and one to grow on. (H/T @PeterMDeWitt! ) Making this investment has presented amazing opportunities for both individual and collective efficacy. #NYEDchat
Reflaction: Lead like a teacher leader is an action in itself to redirect our thinking to effect positive change. I will continue to work collaboratively with edus during #PD to move beyond our comfort zone one inch, to collaborate, and to think like a team. #NYEDChat
A2: Know how to see both sides of the coin. You have to know when to sit at the table and when to stand up. You have to model professionalism and #GrowthMindset. Remember we are all on the same team: Team children. #NYEDCHAT
Reg opportunities to reflect on sw, individual and team goals-all aligned to a common vision. Practicing a growth mindset will build the belief in themselves to take make decisions, that are best for Ss while aligning to the collective vision. #nyedchat
I like the one to go on idea added to the other two, Dennis. There is so much opportunity in education to move forward these days but we all must have a #growthmindset. #NYEDChat
Reflection: My favorite leader brought the joy. Every day. You couldn't help but be affected and love your job. And that joy is passed on to kids...what a wonderful cycle! #nyedchat
Q5Reg opportunities to reflect on sw, individual and team goals-all aligned to a common vision. Practicing a growth mindset will build the belief in themselves to take make decisions, that are best for Ss while aligning to the collective vision. #NYEDCHAT
Authentic, caring and always learning, she lived what she asked of her students and colleagues. In her classroom and her meetings students/teachers alike felt safe and valued. #NYEDChat
Reflaction: A teacher is one that has open the doors of their classroom to observe and learn and/or to give feedback. This teacher leader movies w/ positivity . I always try to emulate this T leaderin my personal & prof life. Actions speak louder than words, so I act! #nyedchat
Reflection: I am learning that my favorite leaders are teachers/ / admin/ students that keep showing up- and every time they stumble or fall back- they come back a little stronger and wiser and bolder and kinder. I’d like to model that spirit for people. #NYEDChat
