Welcome to #MakeItReal! Tonight we're using the SpaceX Rocket to launch our teaching conversation!
Who are you?
Where are you from?
If you could go anywhere in Space, where would it be?
Hi everyone, Heather, Seattle and probably just a short jaunt around in the space shuttle (because space is cool but also kind of terrifying!) #makeitreal
Hi everyone! Scott, technology integration specialist, from NJ. If I could go anywhere in space.. hm.. Somewhere warm, maybe closer to the sun haha. #MakeItReal
Q1: The SpaceX team admitted it was “way harder than we thought” to finish the Falcon Heavy Rocket. What have you or your students done recently that was way harder than you thought but turned out to be an overwhelming success?

Hi! I’m Valerie from Metro Atlanta. I teach Littles. I’d go to the moon. (Although prefer just being dazzled by Space—don’t really fancy going!) #MakeItReal

A1: 🌟Flexible seating🌟 at the HS level! Lots of things crop up that we didn’t initially consider. Different components in play, like S attachment to desks at first. Now a success but still working out kinks! 🙌🙌#MakeItReal
1) It's still a success in the making, but #geniushour! My Ss just finished writing their guiding questions, but they turned out SO good! I'm pumped to see how much we all learn! #MakeItReal
A1: Definitely our most recent project where students had to research the Roaring Twenties on their own and design a website. I was there to help with some fact-checking and web logistic things but they did the hard stuff. It went really well! #makeitreal
A1 For Littles? Most of what we do is met with, “this is really hard...” So, generally speaking getting them to process through thinking. When they do? They are so exclamatory that they “got it!” They also realize the difference between challenging + (too) hard! #MakeItReal
A1: Spending time as acting principal this school year. Although you'd have to ask the staff, students, and parents if it was a success. Now I'm onto being a tech coach. Lots of change #makeitreal
Yes! I love having them work first thing in the morning. They come up with the best ideas then! (File this under reasons I wish we could do PE in the afternoon- ha!) #MakeItReal
A1 When we tried #MysterySkype for the first time we (5th graders) got schooled by a group of 2nd graders! We learned so much and fell in love with #mysteryskype#MakeItReal
A1: "Big Kids" terminology to my PreKers. Diagonal-slanted. fiction, Non-fiction, parts of a book, author, illustrator, etc. The Ss are such little sponges! They know all of these terms and more! #MakeItReal
A1: Teaching Kinder for the first time in 5 years...this comes up a lot for me! I try something that I'm not sure about and my kids blow it out of the water. The littles are AMAZING #MakeItReal

2) Being goofy! Tell a joke, make a ridiculous mistake, throw out "Hey Bo Diddly Bop" (@GoNoodle) - throw them off and bring it back! We all need a brain break sometimes! #MakeItReal
Still kinks. Tomorrow will be first test (not online) for Ss to take in new seating. We've worked out rotation of seating options too. Pub table and futon are big hit too, along with camping chairs. #MakeItReal
It's one of my favorite things to do! My #1 piece of advice is don't worry, just do it and learn from your first one. Don't feel like you have to prepare SOO much before you can ever do it. Also, check out these resources: https://t.co/mEcPElm6iV#makeitreal
A2: I love to use the Plot Summary game! Take a movie, create (say out loud) one sentence that sums up beginning of movie, middle of movie, and end of movie. Bare bones facts. If class can't guess movie, S wins gum. If they do guess it, next person goes. #MakeItReal
A2: When HS kids need to shift, sometimes we go on a "NOtice Walk." NO talking til we get back to the room, but then talk all you want about what you noticed! #MakeItReal
A2 Einstein is my ace. My Littles will do ANYTHING if Einstein shares it. Who knew chinchillas can write + read + whisper + sing + INSPIRE! They never tire of him. #makeitreal
A2 Not sure I have a specific strategy, but it's really important to just ACKNOWLEDGE that your lesson isn't going as planned and an adjustment needs to be made. #MakeItReal
I'm a sax player, so that usually is a joke about us! HOw about, what's the difference between a bari sax and a chain saw? A chain saw has vibrato #MakeItReal
A2: Don't panic. Be honest about it not going as planned and work through it together. That's life. Things don't go as planned but you don't know unless you try. #makeitreal
A2) always easy to collect attention through humor. Like you do with babies, jingle your teacher "keys" in front of the class, get them smiling and nodding. #MakeItReal
A3: I pretty much have done everything crazy, but I am moving in the direction of #EmpowerBook mode for my HS S. I'm turning over the wheel, bit by bit. #MakeItReal
A3 I've been playing with a few AR apps for chem. The one I like doesn't work on my android, but I REALLY want to make an interactive periodic table for my classroom using another AR app that does work #makeitreal
3) Only 1? I'm currently trying to decide which topics should in an OR transformation, how to work in a boot camp, & a few other back burner ideas. @MsLewis3rd & I are brainstorming a book tasting & book clubs between our classes and utilizing @Flipgrid. #alltheideas#makeitreal
Joining in late but I saw Q3 and couldn't help but join in. A3: I would love to try and create a #pbis club that has levels and paths Ss can go on. Bring in my drone and have badges for Ss to earn as they earn levels. #makeitreal
I couldn't quite get that one to work the way I hoped. I've been playing with RApp Chemistry, AtomAR, and Augmented Class! v0.7. daqri has one that looks amazing, but I haven't gotten it to work on my phone yet #makeitreal
Hey, got time in the next few weeks to do one with one of my HS classes? A mystery GHO or Skype? I want to train this new group and haven't done one this year yet. #MakeItReal
Thank you so much for being a part of this amazing #MakeItReal Chat tonight!!! Join us every week, and if you'd like to be a guest host anytime, just message me and we'll set it up!!!
Shark week theme for Ts-build on ideas for the building and district for the coming year. Similar to a jam session as talked about in #4OCF#makeitreal#edcamp@renathunderhawk
3b) Personal tho- my craziest ambition that I'm slightly trying to ignore is that I want to teach a college course. Not the hard hitting ed classes, but still meaningful- student engagement, building classroom community, thinking outside the box (& classroom walls). #makeitreal
This is me, but if movement fails, I can call it done before the bell and then start the Plot Summary game that I mentioned in my answer. :) #MakeItReal
I hope you'll join us again! We're off next week for Valentine's Day but pick up on the 21st. The #MakeItReal chat is based on my book, Instant Relevance, and connects to great teaching and learning ideas each week. See you again soon!
Yes! We have a dog adoption organization that will do this. It got me thinking. What if I had a dog that came each day. Watch this space..it’s outlandish, but I am curious! #makeitreal
