Please join us for #NGSSchat happening tonight 12/6 at 9 PM ET, 8 PM CT, 7PM MT and 6 PM PT. We are talking Helping Others Implement the #NGSS Part 2 #NSTA18@NSTA
Hi everyone in #NGSSChat land.
Ted Willard, #NSTA standards geek.
Coming to you today from a Summit on the CCC's near NSTA's Galactic Headquarters in beautiful downtown Arlington VA.
Welcome Dan! I am gearing up to spend some time in 6th grade classrooms in the spring and I am super excited about it! How would you sum up 6th grade #NGSS experiences :)? #NGSSchat
Q1 Let’s kick off our chat by sharing a time when a student made their thinking visible that made you think-- now that is the reason I work so hard at this #NGSS stuff. What did that thinking look like? Why did it feel like a win? #NGSSchat
A1) Class is analyzing a graph and I ask my students to develop questions based on the graph. One says - who authored the study? where was the data collected? for how long? #ngsschat I looked at that as they were really obtaining and evaluating information.

First, I hope you're excited; 6th grade is awesome! Second, it's exciting b/c it's often my students' first exposure to the practices. We get to talk lots about how science isn't just facts - it's skills!
A1: as Ss do more group chats I can hear them sharing ideas and recognizing how they are using CCC and SEPs like scientists do. Just hearing their process about content helps. #NGSSchat
With burgeoning literacy and abstract thinking skills, 6th graders are able to turn hands-on explorations into meaningful models and arguments! #ngsschat
Hi my name is Cheyenne Ochoa and I am a graduate student at Chapman University in their MAT and multiple suject credential program located in California #NGSSchat@YehCathery

We just started a water unit & Ss did a great job of letting their thinking shine on an initial activity Is a win when Ss think w/o reservation #ngsschat

A1: I LOVE LOVE LOVE any opportunity to have students revise and revisit inital models. Not only do I get to see and track their learning... so do they!
#ngsschat
A1) Another would have to be when a student came up and asked if they could redesign their lab because they were curious about something. My answer was, heck yeah!! Let's do this! #NGSSchat

Q2 Still riding that amazing kid thinking wave-- how have you used stories from the classroom, invited guests into your classroom, or some other method to help others experience the magic of the #NGSS OR what are ideas to help others SEE what #NGSS is about? #NGSSchat
A1: Muscle storyboards is when I felt all students made their thinking visible and figured out the difference between muscles with and without DMD in the iHub Genetics storyline. Many students were engaged, so they provided great models and explanations. #NGSSChat
A1) Co-taught with in a class last week. Worked on initial models to explain phenomenon. Teacher commented, “I didn’t know they could talk to each other like that.”#ngsschat
@NGSS_tweeps is still looking for awesome folks like yourself to take a week hosting the account in the spring. Let @VogelWendi know and she will get you all setup! It really is fun and easy. #NGSSchat

A2) Honestly - one of the biggest things I do is share stories on here. It is such a huge audience and it will spark conversations with many different folks. #NGSSChat
Q2 Still riding that amazing kid thinking wave-- how have you used stories from the classroom, invited guests into your classroom, or some other method to help others experience the magic of the #NGSS OR what are ideas to help others SEE what #NGSS is about? #NGSSchat
A2: I will be! I have always shared experiences with my colleagues, sometimes I send pics to parents... but I hadn't thought about inviting parents in. #NGSSChat

Q2: This is a great question! I like to think of twitter as a giant "brag board" for our classrooms. I love posting and seeing others post about what #NGSS products look like and seeing their Ss figuring it out along the way #ngsschat

A2 Had the great opportunity to present at @KySciTA in Lexington last month As I shared my story I tried to use as many S situations as possible Love taking S growth & learning w/other #SciTs#ngsschat

A2 Love inviting ppl in from all different careers to talk about how science is used. Many kids don't realize how many vocations depend on science. #NGSSChat

A2: but of course @STANYSorg conference, presenting on nature journaling & outdoor Ed, SEPs/CCCs abound w looking for patterns, understanding stability & change (of seasons), asking Qs, observing and communicating info #NGSSChat
A2: I also think this process can be messy- but being in each other's classrooms allows for effective PLCs. What worked, what didn't, how can we help each other figure out how to anchor & revisit meaningful phenomena, etc. Adopting an open door policy for classrooms #ngsschat
Thank you for sharing your #NGSS classroom by leading conference sessions. Many of the teachers I worked with over the past several days discussed how impactful this year's @KySciTA conference sessions were for them. @BMSscienceteach#NGSSchat

My friend @Evo_Explorer talked about it in an article he wrote called the hive mind. He is right. We need to work together to make all of us better. #NGSSChat
Q2) I’ve used these videos or courageous teachers sharing their practice to get teachers to ask the question, “how do I get my students to do that?” #ngsschathttps://t.co/QDmRRyL4Y9

Welcome Megan-So glad you're here! Also excited 4 your answer to this-Pls share a time when a student made thinking visible that made you think--now that is the reason I work so hard at this #NGSS stuff. What did that thinking look like? Why did it feel like a win? #NGSSchat
A2: We have the "Pineapple Chart" at our school started by two teachers. You post what strategy or skill you'd like to showcase and then staff can come see what it is all about. It doesn't just have to be science teachers that you can learn your skills from. #ngsschat
A2 - I'm working to build my lessons and confidence. Hopefully next year I will start inviting people to see 3 dimensional lessons. Still have a long way to go. #ngsschat
A2 - I'm lucky to have worked with an amazing group of NGSS teachers! We hosted learning labs at our school and we now present together across the nation. We are all currently at different schools now helping others experience the difference.
#NGSSChat#nextgenerationteachers
I love this idea-- I cannot wait to talk more about this with you and see this! Sounds like a great chat topic-- interested in hosting :)? Maybe w/ @krademaker#NGSSchat

I think many of us are in this position, #NGSS is like a marriage; there is always something to work on to make it more vibrant The more Ts put in, the more authentic 3D our lessons will become #ngsschat
I hate to duck out but it has been one of them days and I am out of juice. Talk to you all later. Enjoy and keep up the awesome work everyone! #NGSSchat
I had a moment today when I looked around the room and all of my Ss were working super hard on drawing models and then backing up their design with great explanations on sound wave properties. And more than half of them English is their second (or third .. ) language. #NGSSchat
Allowing students to demonstrate understanding in different modalities really opened up the class and allowed more kids to feel confident in sharing what they knew. #NGSSchat
Q3) Create an environment with multiple onramps for students to enter the conversation. Keep encouraging all students. Listen for their input. Let them shine. Kids love this kind of learning environment!

A3 Wow, so many ways. Start off with an engaging phenomena, that connect to Ss interests. If the phenomena doesn’t catch them, then only the eager Ss will jump in. #NGSSChat
Well, the two teachers that started it really sold it. Even gave out pineapples. But it is daily chart - we use a Google Sheet. The teacher leaders also remind us time to time and give shout outs to those that have participated.#ngsschat
A3: I try to use show calls whenever possible to highlight great student work, especially as the unit progresses and their products get more and more complex. It's awesome to show off student work such as models that feature synthesis of so many different ideas! #ngsschat

A2: Worked w three 3-5gr Ts today. We visited 5’s class and took CCC prompts w us to practice using them to push student thinking during engineering challenge. Admin and school coach joined too- it was so powerful seeing all adults in the room working on common growth! #ngsschat
Q2 Still riding that amazing kid thinking wave-- how have you used stories from the classroom, invited guests into your classroom, or some other method to help others experience the magic of the #NGSS OR what are ideas to help others SEE what #NGSS is about? #NGSSchat
A3 since #NGSS has a focus on depth of understanding instead of a mile wide it allows for different types of assessments: Poster creation with evidence from what they are investigating #ngsschat
Q3) Create an environment with multiple onramps for students to enter the conversation. Keep encouraging all students. Listen for their input. Let them shine. Kids love this kind of learning environment!
#NGSSchat
Performance tasks to evaluate learning strands/sets allow Ss to show their thinking Make assessments 3D by having Ss show & talk what they know, not just to regurgitate facts #ngsschat
My understanding is the #studentvoice hashtag was originally made to give real Ss a voice in education. #ngsschat - Personally I have inited many educators to get their students on twitter to interact with my students. excited to get Ss communicating, getting involved
Leading off of the phenomena, write down Ss wonderings and Qs, AND return to them! It is easy to get caught up in the storyline we’ve planned but we have to give Ss the power to drive their learning. #NGSSChat
#ngsschat A3 using video as a way to get students to show me they can explain something of worrying isn't their strength. Also to give and receive peer feedback! This one was directly from @TdiShelton !
A3 offering different modalities allows for student to show what they know through speaking, writing, drawing etc. works really well for sped or EL kids that might not have the language skills. #NGSSChat
A1. Love hearing “This is like when...”
the other day a student reassessed a nuclear chem skill- determining products of decay. “oh! This is like how we have to make everything add up on both sides like when we balance chemical equations!” #NGSSChat
Q4 WOW-- lot of suggestions to support students in sense-making & making that thinking visible. How can you help parents understand how the #NGSS is different? How can you involve them as partners? OR What parent resources do you use? #NGSSchat
I enjoy answering a question w/a question "What do you think?" "How can you explain that?" My Ss know know that the answers come from their thinking, not my education from college #ngsschat
A4 Give parents a taste of #NGSSculture at open house so they understand the diff in facilitating process over teaching content Invite them to come in and watch...make them comfortable w/the change in pedagogy #ngsschat
A4 I go right to the source, been readying these handouts for parents.https://t.co/pRF3iJ4bZP#ngsschat but TBH our Ps don't know much and aren't being told much. I've been sharing changes happening w Ss and Ps
Q4) Engage parents in conversations about what their students are doing in science class. Student-led conferences are a great time to engage; emails and phone calls work as well. #NGSSchat

A4: Our curriculum has a parent letter for each unit w/ a general overview of topic and links to ideas for discussion prompts at home or places to visit around town that connect to the unit. #ngsschat

Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs, Intel, and Honeywell are employers in our state. They have been pushing for NGSS since the beginning. Our gov was against it. Instead of leading the way, here we are...late to the party :( #NGSSchat
Q4 WOW-- lot of suggestions to support students in sense-making & making that thinking visible. How can you help parents understand how the #NGSS is different? How can you involve them as partners? OR What parent resources do you use? #NGSSchat
Q5 Visible thinking is often depending on the TASK presented to students AND the questions teachers pose. Please comment/ provide advice on how TASKS or QUESTIONS can support Ss thinking. What characteristics are critical for productive tasks & Qs? #NGSSchat

A4: This style of teaching lends itself to home connections better than decontextualized science. #mySci parents tell me that their kids are sharing what they’re learning at home for the first time and saying “I can’t miss school bc I have to figure out what’s next! 😍 #ngsschat
Q4 WOW-- lot of suggestions to support students in sense-making & making that thinking visible. How can you help parents understand how the #NGSS is different? How can you involve them as partners? OR What parent resources do you use? #NGSSchat
A4: I try to provide parents examples of the high-rigor, practices-aligned work they do when they come to visit the building! It's fun to show off models and arguments to highlight the complexity of their students' thinking. #NGSSchat
Q5 Visible thinking is often depending on the TASK presented to students AND the questions teachers pose. Please comment/ provide advice on how TASKS or QUESTIONS can support Ss thinking. What characteristics are critical for productive tasks & Qs? #NGSSchat
A5 Q can't be answered in a yes or no, in other words multiple possible right answers in which they have to do some investigation to figure out which answer is the best #ngsschat
A5: I think u have to encourage them to ask Qs of themselves & each other. Constantly asking for reflection on process, every lab we do asks for exp errors and limitations of our models. #ngsschat
A4 Elem parents are on board when they see #NGSS learning in action. Either experiencing it themselves in a workshop or watching videos of their kids learning. They wish they had learned this way! #NGSSChat
Q5 Visible thinking is often depending on the TASK presented to students AND the questions teachers pose. Please comment/ provide advice on how TASKS or QUESTIONS can support Ss thinking. What characteristics are critical for productive tasks & Qs? #NGSSchat
A5 Task needs to relevant which at the very least means they need to have a question to answer that has some sort of hook to it to generate engagement #ngsschat
A4: I <3 twitter for this piece too! I LOVE that our school has supportive parents that want to see what's happening in our room. I feel like tweeting gives them a glimpse. My own lil guy is almost 2 & I LOVE getting pics; I can't imagine this will change when he's 12 #ngsschat
#ngsschat A5 the reason a student is asking a Q is different sometimes than why we want them to ask it (to uncover a specific science idea/DCI) So it's so important that the prompts make sense from the students POV, then careful questioning can get them to dig deeper #KeepItReal
Final Q Q6 How do you use media, social media, interaction with scientists, or informal science institutions &/or resources to support #NGSS implementation in the classroom? #NGSSchat
A5: I find the more real-world-relevant the task, the more it prompts student engagement in taking risks and making thinking visible. In our last unit, S's got more engaged in our water purification unit than ever after tying it to issues of social justice in Flint, MI. #NGSSchat
Q5) I often rely on the Q's Ss ask! They know the vocab. I was trying to get kids to engage in a scaling activity. The least likely S volunteered a way that he used to "solve the problem." I openly admitted that I would not have thought of his way. it was brilliant ! #NGSSchat
Please join us for #NGSSchat NEXT WEEK (due to the holidays) for our last #NGSSchat of the year. We are so excited to talk Science Professional Learning Standards: What makes for high quality #NGSS professional development? Hosted by @bpenuel@ScienceEdNana & Michele Snyder
A6 I try to share my classroom via Twitter as much as possible The more we share the more ideas we can help cultivate Follow & interact w/handles like @NGSS_tweeps & @ngssSfocus is also a good idea! #ngsschat
A6: #NGSSChat
(That's not just the hashtag, it's my answer to the question)
Also, if it weren't for social media, I might not have any social life. :-)
Final Q Q6 How do you use media, social media, interaction with scientists, or informal science institutions &/or resources to support #NGSS implementation in the classroom? #NGSSchat
A6: most Ss can get to @AMNH and I encourage them to go explore for EC. A summary, reflection &selfie gives me lots of insight into their interests and motivations #NGSSChat
A4: we recently partnered with a district to host a #MySci#ngss curriculum night for students and their families. Each grade level K-6 chose an activity to highlight #3dlearning and we had literature on the new vision to share. It was a big success! #ngsschat
