Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
Hello, hello! I'm honored to guest host this chat. I'm a super-fan of the PIRATE way of edu. I teach pre-k in Chattanooga and love to share with others. Two fun facts: I'm a Google Certified Trainer and I LOVE to create #sketchnotes of the books I read. Welcome! #LeadLAP
Can you help? Cassie is in school for elementary ed. Also wants to hear about books for elementary school children. #LeadUpChat, #LeadLAP... while you're here...? #nt2t
Good morning! Shelley Burgess co-author of #LeadLAP Thanks everyone for joining today. You are in for a special treat with @mospillman leading the way!
Hey #LeadLAP! So happy to be here! I’m Alicia from NC, Lead Dig Learning & Media Innovation Fac at an awesome STEM magnet middle school. Jumping in between my daughters’ basketball games!
Top of the morning to all in #LeadLAP Meredith joining from beautiful SW Florida. Boats are zooming past out in the Gulf this morning - racing toward sunshine and enjoying their Saturday!
A1: I definitely use Rapport on the daily with my little learners. They need to know that I care about them or else being at school could be the worst thing that could possibly happen in a 4 year olds mind! #LeadLAP
Q1: #LeadLAP starts with the fundamentals of being a PIRATE educator. How have you used Passion, Immersion, Rapport, Asking & Analyzing, Transformation, or Enthusiasm to bring on positive changes in your role? Would love to see images if you have some!
Hi #LeadLAP pals, Tara from Kansas!
Educator, author, coach at heart and most importantly...the @dbc_inc media & communications gal! Love my job!! ❤️☠️
Just incorparated a clue game into a lesson on fractions. Started it yesterday so it hasn't finished yet. Students are going around the school simplifying fractions in order to get clues about which teacher stole all the candy from the math class. #LeadLAP

A1. Started the year full pirate. Morning boards, role play, gamification, room transform, music, immersion immersion immersion, Big History and Iditarod themes #LeadLAP
A1: Our media center is a space for thinking, fun, collaboration, ingenuity, and a space where Student voice matters above all else. It’s a safe space for ALL students. I also lead EIGHT clubs & love every minute. They keep bringing new ideas & I can’t say no. Ha! #LeadLAP

A1: Bringing lessons to life for kids- yesterday we were assessing on fact families. I had them make "digital gingerbread houses" on their ipads and decorate them with christmas lights! So fun!!! #leadlap

A1: Its all about relationships. Build rapport to support the kids & adults. Once the students have trust, they can come to you with anything they need. I have lots of photo examples - I tweet it every day! #LeadLAP
A1: Building enthusiasm & w/the elements of surprise are always so much fun to see Ss wiggle & giggle through...#MysterySkype w/USA buddies peaks their interest so much when the know we will be meeting new Ss...but who, & when, & where...!!! #LeadLAP

It’s great to be here! I missed #tlap Mon night & have felt off all week. I knew I just needed a dose of pirate & there’s nowhere better to get it on Sat morning. #LeadLAP
A1. I have done lots of risk taking to create greater experiences for our school. This includes a Parent Book Study, a Parent Edcamp, creating student leadership, and using PD that connects to former students and professionals in our areas. serving others. #LeadLAP
A1: I think a really important part of my role is modelling it for others. Parents need to see that I'm out interacting, Ts need to see me out interacting - it helps them understand what is important to me and what I value as a leader. #LeadLAP
A1: Passion in my classroom happens when I give Ss choices and opportunities to do new things. We are trying out VR this year! Gives them a chance to immerse in the content. #VR#edutech#leadlap
A1. I have a rapport with all my kids. But it is my passion that I think makes the difference. I love technology and last week all my classes participate in #TheHourofCode just because I love it:)
#LeadLAP
A1 Passion & immersion are two hallmarks we live by in our inquiry-based school. After reading "Night Tree" we thought of all the ways we could help the creatures who inhabit our garden. @mospillman#LeadLAP
A1: I like to think I use all of the PIRATE everyday. From giving High Fives and smiles on the way into school, to stopping by rooms and talking to kids and teachers, to always asking/analyzing and using "What's the Purpose?" as the mantra #LeadLAP (hanging above copier)
A1. I adore increasing the use of voice and choice in moderating the #BookCampPD chat. Guest moderators, guest authors, seeking opinions about which books to highlight about prof learning. You can vote here https://t.co/S9Ahi4qfgc for our Winter/Spring books! #LeadLAP
A2: I keep hearing advice that is basically telling me to stop talking! Listen. From Aaron Burr to the LeadLAP authors, and more. Wise words that help me learn more from others. #bettertogether#LeadLAP
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
A1: Immersion is important. Don't expect Ts and Ss to be passionate about integrating technology in meaningful ways unless you get excited about it too! @GetKahoot#LeadLAP
A1: I try to bring the same level of enthusiasm, positivity, kindness and understanding that I expect the entire staff to bring every day. Some examples are 12 Days of Christmas, Book Tasting PD, Positive Office Referrals, Riding Busses... #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A1 we have a daily news feed instead of PA announcements on YouTube hosted by students for students over live youtube feed:) https://t.co/SD1UBXyIa2
😍❤️Awwww...thanks.
I’m a pretty blessed girl. No doubt, I work hard and never settle for less than ALL of me in everything I do.
However...
I’m also not sure why the Big Guy has shown me such❤️but am ever grateful. #leadlap
A1: Hard to choose just one or a few! Maintain enthusiasm for each class period. Been incorporating my love of music more into our learning experiences, & I continue to add new additions to my #flexibleseating . Ss love the footstools! (free from tech dept.) #LeadLAP
A2: This was a HUGE piece for me too, @mospillman! I love how @burgess_shelley shares that she listens to all then synthesizes what she hears. I really need to work on this, doing it intentionally in each interaction. #LeadLAP
A2. I have learned that sometimes students need to feel like they are being heard. Giving them the last word sometimes allows them to feel that they have input worth hearing. #LeadLAP
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
A1: Goal to build a more caring comminity. I have input now from students, parents and staff about what makes our school great and ways to improve. Working now to put the ideas into action #LeadLAP
A2 Yes, it’s okay to not have all the answers, and it’s okay to change your mind when given the facts. What’s that saying? Stop beating a dead horse! Let it go! #leadlap
A2 Resisting the urge to butt in when students take the leadin class... letting them unfold wings and grow superpowers... holding tongue... surprise! We have a class community growing! Clunky becomes dynamic. #LeadLAP
A2: Listening more and analyzing perspectives are the keys to success as a leader. Not always the best at it, but I try to keep my passion in check! #leadlap
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
A2. In many instances, we make greater impact by “talk less and listen more” - so let others share ideas, observe what are the students doing and how can others help lead. #LeadLAP
A2 that lesson reminded me of something our sup says. We have 2 ears and 1 mouth so listen more. Having the last word means nothing especially at the expense of relationships. #leadlap
A2: In my role, I want to support Ts, Ss & Ps. If I ask "how can I help you?" Then I want them to answer. I don't want to give them the answers of here is what I will do for you. #LeadLAP
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
A2: if you can learn how to do this, it will transform your practice. Make the expectation clear. Hold to it. That doesn’t require the last word. Requires the right words. #leadlap
A2: My last word tends to be sarcastic, so keeping that to myself is ALWAYS the best plan! If the convo doesn't end in a question, I don't have to keep it going. :) #LeadLAP
A2: It's more important to "get it right" instead of "being right". That is why listening and reflecting is so important. We work with lots of smart and creative staff who are in the trenches every day #LeadLAP
A2: As an #educoach I need to focus on those ANCHOR Conversations, so it's super important for me to let T's come to some of their own realizations through convos. #LeadLAP
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A2 I suppose it depends on style and purpose. Although some of the best learning comes when we ask questions that don’t have “Answers” which students are asked to guess and teachers hold the perfect answer:) however there are occasions where there are answers:)
#LeadLAP
A2. Students often tell me that the best teachers LISTEN to what they have to say. #StudentVoice is so important. But we must stop talking to hear what they have to say...
#LeadLAP
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
A3: It's no fun if you're in the FEAR side of this, but such comfort can come from the kind words of a colleague who took the time to say she thinks I was doing a great job. So glad she took the time to share her thoughts back then. Helped me more than they know. #LeadLAP 🤗
Q3: Leaders can change the culture from FEAR to “free to grow” by changing convos they have. Share a convo that either led to FEAR or “free to grow” for you or those you lead. #LeadLAP
A2 I feel like I have to keep relearning this! But when I hold my tongue, (and the space for silence) I find that more people contribute leading to deeper understanding, ownership, and connection. #leadlap
A2 One of the 3 plusses shared w/ my intern at her ending conference was her ability to take advice well, show she's listening, smile, nod, & end respectfully. (Whether she chose to take the advice or not, her actions left the meeting on a positive frame.) #LeadLAP@mospillman
A2: Both in my classroom & in the teachers I've mentored. I make sure that I listen & encourage them to make their own decisions. I don't need to be the "smartest person." I trust the process & know that they may learn from it & if not, I'll learn from it. #leadlap
Q2: I was really struck by the advice in the book to “stop having the last word”. How have you seen (or could you see) this making a positive difference for those you lead/teach? #LeadLAP
Q3: Leaders can change the culture from FEAR to “free to grow” by changing convos they have. Share a convo that either led to FEAR or “free to grow” for you or those you lead. #LeadLAP
A1: Sharing my passions for photography and video lead to the development of Ss run Media club where students create and live stream school events! #LeadLAP
A2: This is like the quote I have posted - WAIT (which = Why Am I Talking?) my focus is on helping others to shine so I work to provide space for others to share ideas and feel safe doing so. #LeadLAP
A2: Oooo getting in the last word reminds me of someone saying "because I said so!" My favorite reflective comeback to a "final word" type of person is..."thank you, you have given me some things to think about." Works w/Ss and adults..& it's the truth! #LeadLAP
This is a great point, and as a mentor of mine once asked me years ago, "Are you talking at people OR talking with people?" That was a game changer for my leadership career. #LeadLAP
A3: Meeting with a T about an upcoming observation. She had thought about having her Kindys use @Seesaw and video each other re-telling a story. She had never done it before. I said go for it and it was amazing. #LeadLAp
A2: Letting others say the last word can be hard for me. I notice it happens more often than not when I encourage or compliment Ss. Esp after a run, runners will have something to say about how they want to do better next time or what they are proud of. #leadlap
A3: I remember a convo a few years ago with a T who had an idea. She was pretty new to our school, as was I! She told us about it and we got excited for her and just said yes! It has led to amazing things!! Saying YES often does! #LeadLAP
Q3: Leaders can change the culture from FEAR to “free to grow” by changing convos they have. Share a convo that either led to FEAR or “free to grow” for you or those you lead. #LeadLAP
A3: a new professional texted me something intended for someone else that was not kind to me. Instead of getting upset, we discussed it as a learning opportunity, AND I used the feedback to make changes that helped us. It changed the game #leadLAP
A1 Teaching #breakoutedu to a group hit all these! I created a breakout about students needing creativity. Embedded the players in the clues. Reflected on process.
Then we created for students. #LeadLAP
Q3: Leaders can change the culture from FEAR to “free to grow” by changing convos they have. Share a convo that either led to FEAR or “free to grow” for you or those you lead. #LeadLAP
A3: It's critical to approach a coaching conversation as an equal partner. Learning and growing together is the goal. I learn at least as much from my team as they do from me. #LeadLAP
A3: Am always surprised at initiatives or risk taking that doesn't occur due to assumed lack of support or directives from admin. My motto is Just Do It, so I model that & encourage Ts that they can Do It (whatever it is) on their own. No need to be told to be creative. #LeadLAP
A3 Recently had a convo with one of my #gamers. I explained that I can't possibly know everything about gaming and therefore I leave it to my students to explore what areas of gaming they want to actively learn.
#LeadLAP
Q3: Leaders can change the culture from FEAR to “free to grow” by changing convos they have. Share a convo that either led to FEAR or “free to grow” for you or those you lead. #LeadLAP
A2 I have found that Listening to Learn helps me fight the urge to speak back—unless it’s to clarify my understanding.
Knowing my purpose (in the convo)=not to provide advice but to learn

A3. Had a conversation with a teacher last week about the IEP process. We discussed the potential for growth of a student with a correctly written and followed plan. At the end of the conversation the teacher went from worry of implementing to excitement for growth #LeadLAP
I was certainly on "a mission" as I quickly walked though the hallways of a school. There always seemed to be one more thing that quickly needed to be taken care of. What happened was I was failing to listen carefully to others. #LeadLAP
A3: I had an administrator tell me once, that I was too "inexperienced" to help one of my Ss. Her words were "shut up, or I will make sure your year is made very difficult to work here." The fear was my answer to knowing I had to leave at the EOY. I've never looked back! #leadlap
Q3: Leaders can change the culture from FEAR to “free to grow” by changing convos they have. Share a convo that either led to FEAR or “free to grow” for you or those you lead. #LeadLAP
A3: In convos with my Sparks Starters, I tell them if they want to try something new, invite me in! I don’t have all the answers, but I can be there to support you and help you work through any issues that arise. #leadlap
A3. Last yr a science class did PBL and they presented to each other. My convo with teacher was “let’s make it authentic for kids and bring in parents and professionals”. We did that this yr. amazing experience for kids! Proud of teachers for risk taking. #LeadLAP
A3. Had a conversation with a teacher last week about the IEP process. We discussed the potential for growth of a student with a correctly written and followed plan. At the end of the conversation the teacher went from worry of implementing to excitement for growth #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A3 next time you walk through a classroom take part and follow up with some questions, I noticed... I wonder... taking an interest regularly and sharing your thoughts builds relationships and trust. You also build credibility when people know that you understand them.
A3: I love getting to sit and brainstorm with my principal @goinssh - she is amazing at helping me think through ideas & prepare for potential obstacles. She always makes me feel “free to grow”. #LeadLAP
A3: Coaching Ss in crisis w/a peer to listen to one another, take turns speaking, hold back interruption, & freely speak your truth the way you saw a situation are steps to decrease fear to confront a problem & open up a chance to grow a solution together. #LeadLAP
A3: I had meetings with 3 teachers this week to talk about how I can support their professional growth including what they want me to focus on during my frequent visits to the classrooms. They choose the areas they want feedback on. #LeadLAP
A3: We’re getting AppleTVs in every room in preparation for our 1:1 rollout next year. The rollout is creating some fear, but Some of my most traditional teachers are being reflective and changing their practice daily. Exciting stuff!#leadlap
Hi, #nt2t! I'm new to Twitter chats and am a student in a Children's Lit class.
I have a couple questions:
Q1. What is the most important thing for a first-year teacher to know?
Q2. What are some tips to get students engaged in reading?
Thanks!
A3 pt 2: I take this tidbit with me anytime I am in a position of leadership. I am CONSCIOUS to never make someone feel less than me, just because of experience.
#LeadLAP
A2: I use the power of the pause to stop and listen. It is not important to have the final say, the goal is to understand where someone is coming from and how they feel. #LeadLAP
A3 Our principal grows my willingness to risk when he shares his own path through risky decisions... feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Authentic leadership and humility empowers us. #LeadLAP
A3) As a new teacher with a sense of “I gotta be doing it right all the time” I can be afraid to open myself up to input. But convo with my mentor this yr helped me remember growing on my part only helps the Ss in the long run. It’s not a performance, but a purpose . #leadlap
A3: conversations need to focus more on how to improve and less on what’s wrong. Also, folks need to feel empowered to decide on their growth. Leaders should facilitate not direct. #LeadLAP
A4 This one I face daily, as well. 4-5 year olds get a lot of redirection. Constantly checking myself so the behavior is seen as unwanted, not the kiddo. It's hard. Then try to get to root of the behavior-tired, sick, hungry, potty needed, family issue, etc? And hugs. 🤗 #LeadLAP
Q4: Sometimes our roles feel more like a “gotcha” than “I got your back!” What can we do to make sure students and staff know we got their back? #LeadLAP
A3 Changing the culture for us has been realizing we are better together and we are in this thing together. If we succeed, we succeed together. If we fail, we fail together. This type mindset has brought us closer together. #together#leadlap
A3 courageous conversations are hard to have, but necessary. I've learned that when I sense something is off, it usually is, so I ask. It leads to healing, gowth, and connection. #leadlap
#LeadLAP A3 also when I have formal evaluations to do I ask people to tell me what they want me to pay attention to, what they are working on and then we discuss that in debrief... it settles them to know what we are looking for and I get a sense of what they are working on
A4: I ask them their "why" behind any decision. Not their "why" in the profession, but just to help me understand why those decisions were made. Once they know I care & understand their thought process, they know I have their back! #leadlap
Q4: Sometimes our roles feel more like a “gotcha” than “I got your back!” What can we do to make sure students and staff know we got their back? #LeadLAP

A2: Listen and validate others’ ideas and points of view. Don’t try to always have all the answers. Valuing the voices that we serve makes a tremendous positive impact on school culture. #leadlap
A4: honestly? Listening with empathy goes a long way. Often times we bring our own agenda to the conversation and students/staff walk away feeling unsupported #leadLAP
A4: It always starts with relationships. Trust is the "oxygen" of our schools as they say in #LeadLAP Without trust we have no chance in building a culture of growth and betterment. We are all in this together. Greatness can only be achieved together.
A4: Build relationships. Encourage & use non-evaluative language. It’s not about what I “like” but about what I observe. Then asking questions allows me to get a better picture of what’s going on. #LeadLAP
A3: These little permission tickets have helped me to have some powerful “free to grow” conversations with staff. Some staff have had tears in their eyes as they explain the pressure they put on themselves to be “perfect”. #LeadLAP
It's hard for us but incredibly empowering for the student to take ownership of their learning. The next step is when I ask them to teach others what they have learned. That's when I get all full of pride:)
#LeadLAP
A3 Our school was created by Ts who wanted something different. Thankfully, the founding Ts partnered w/ a sch district & univ who wanted us to "be free to grow." 20+ yrs later, we've touched kids, families & inservice Ts w/ multiple opportunities of freedom.@mospillman#LeadLAP
A4: Create more positive interactions like celebrating all the goodness happening around your building/district. Ss and Ts should not feel like being summoned to the office automatically means trouble! Surprises, fun, and real connections are always an option! #LeadLAP
A4 when a teacher is having issues with classroom management and give me examples of behavior I usually ask them if they are trying improve behavior or catch them. Interesting responses. #leadlap
Over the 4 decades I have been in education this has been a HUGE shift! Admin use to think they needed to quickly share all of the answers. It was a common expectation. Such an important shift is taking place. #LeadLAP
A2: Listen and validate others’ ideas and points of view. Don’t try to always have all the answers. Valuing the voices that we serve makes a tremendous positive impact on school culture. #leadlap
A3: A teacher recently said “Good things come from those conversations.” She was referring to post observation discussions. That’s a great place I try to encourage risk taking & trying new things. #LeadLAP
A4: RELATIONSHIPS, RELATIONSHIPS, RELATIONSHIPS!! Nomatter what we do right or do wrong, strong relationships see us through the best or worst scenerios. Invest in your team and they will invest in you. #leadlap
Q4: Sometimes our roles feel more like a “gotcha” than “I got your back!” What can we do to make sure students and staff know we got their back? #LeadLAP
Oh, my! You do have a choice to stay in the oppressive environment or go elsewhere. So hard to leave, but sometimes that is what's best for you. #LeadLAP
And that understanding is what creates a bond and trust for the collaborative learning. Every human being wants to feel like they're understood. #LeadLAP
I hear so many creative ideas from my colleagues, and they seemed surprised, but then pleased, when I label the idea as creative. Sometimes, I think, just acknowledging the idea let’s it grow. #leadlap
A4 I try to model being open to feedback, reflection, forgiveness, and risk-taking. I'm also responsive when teachers call, and try to be along-side often enough so they don't have to call. #Leadlap
A4: Always remember and remind T's that the convos we have are private. Plans and evidence may be shared (with permission), but trust is the first step in growth from coaching conversations. #LeadLAP
Q4: Sometimes our roles feel more like a “gotcha” than “I got your back!” What can we do to make sure students and staff know we got their back?
#LeadLAP
A4 After 20 years, finally able to hear myself going toward “gotcha”. Not perfect... becoming conscious of when I fall back into it. It’s a fear response. Now, being conscious of it opens the window for doing it differently. #LeadLAP
A4: Also... just pay attention! Sometimes we get so focused, so determined, so caught up in the "stuff" that we forget to slow down and pay attention to people. Give yourself permission to slow down and engage in real conversations with folks. #LeadLAP
A4 - I've been thinking about this one a lot this week, my solution Sto all is to have a face to face conversation. We started asking reflection questions at the end of walk throughs and the teachers are not happy. So I like to go and chat in person. #LeadLap
A4: We have a Compliments & Concerns box in class. Ss love using this to give shout outs to peers & voice concerns to me they my not feel like talking about w/ others. The box always has notes in it & I love they trust I check it daily & place importance on their needs. #LeadLAP
Q3: Providing real support for Ts trying a new lesson is critical to them taking the leap. Being in the classroom when they try something new with encouragement helps them find their brave. I tell them don't worry I have your back -- and mean it. #LeadLap
Q4: Sometimes our roles feel more like a “gotcha” than “I got your back!” What can we do to make sure students and staff know we got their back? #LeadLAP
A4.2 Teachers have also expressed that they value the autonomy I give them. Didn't realize I was doing this, I think it's just an encouragement and excitement around creativity & collaboration.
They know that's what I value - not perfection. #leadlap
A4. I think it’s important to “lead with your feet, not your seat”. To support teachers and kids you must get into classrooms and see what barriers are, get their feedback and show that you care about them and that together we can make it great school. #LeadLAP
A4 When we coach in each other's classrooms, rather than just jotting notes abt what we see, we actively join in on the lrng. There's nothing like shared positive lrng experiences (& subsequent shared bks & resources!) that draw us together. @mospillman#LeadLAP
A3: These little permission tickets have helped me to have some powerful “free to grow” conversations with staff. Some staff have had tears in their eyes as they explain the pressure they put on themselves to be “perfect”. #LeadLAP
We often talk about student voice and student choice, but this is awesome because it illustrates teacher voice and teacher choice with the same spirit of buy-in and ownership. #LeadLAP
A5: I have never subscribed to "stick and stones..." bc I know how much words impact me. I think that's the same for staff and students. Effect of what is said can change dramatically with HOW it is said. Much more effort & positive outcomes when all feel valued/heard. #LeadLAP
Q5: Here’s a big thought from the book: “Words are manifested leadership”. What does this bring to mind for you as a leader or as the one being led? #LeadLAP
A4: I try to be “present” and in classrooms as much as I can. My goal is to rotate through all 19 schools I serve every two weeks. It’s a challenge, but so powerful to get to know staff, kids, & engage in convos to better understand how I can support them. #LEADLAP
One grade 2 teacher is doing this by framing all of her objectives with the why they are learning this question. It was something she learned in grad school and has started using on her own.

A5: Someone's thoughts translate into words, and translate into actions. When leaders are speaking ill of their position, their role, or those they work for; you know they don't respect the responsibilities. #leadlap
Q5: Here’s a big thought from the book: “Words are manifested leadership”. What does this bring to mind for you as a leader or as the one being led? #LeadLAP
A1: I made this graphic thinking about kids but it equally applies to adults. This attitude helps build rapport: everyone is doing the best they can. Helps me respond with compassion rather than judgement and ask “How can I help?” #LeadLAP
A4 I think reflection is an important part of teaching in a training moment. It ensures “I got your back” bc it’s about Ss taking a front seat to their growth. We are doing more creative reflective writing for the holidays. #leadlap
Q5: Here’s a big thought from the book: “Words are manifested leadership”. What does this bring to mind for you as a leader or as the one being led? #LeadLAP
A4 #LeadLAP shr your passions and curiosities and gong partners to explore them. A year ago I made paper airplane launchers which our grade 6 teacher because I had done it at home super fun and it put me directly in a classroom as a learner with ss and ts https://t.co/YUeOiXa27l
Our Principal sends us inspiring emails multiple times a year. The na-sayers complain he is just babbling, I actually love it and feel like he really cares about us. Words do matter!

Q5: Here’s a big thought from the book: “Words are manifested leadership”. What does this bring to mind for you as a leader or as the one being led? #LeadLAP
Q4: Be there, provide encouragement and be present. Things will go wrong, and thats ok, be willing to help Ts and Ss navigate the failures so they can appreciate the success. #LeadLAP
A5. Words can be so damaging as someone in a leadership position i catch myself to often letting words escape my mouth that can hurt more than help. Thought needs to be made before one speaks. #LeadLAP
A5: That our words are displays and evidence of how we lead. Speak and act your truth...if your words do not line up with action you manifest a contradiction and failure to deliver. #LeadLAP
A4 I think clear, specific, feedback from the leader is imperative. Without it, the ones you serve make up their own based on perception—which usually leads to disaster.
But, with it, you feel valued. Like YOU were worth their time. And, feeling VALUED goes a long way!
#LeadLAP
A5: You can speak about leadership and portray your vision & mission, but until you actually follow through & walk the walk, those words will quickly lose meaning. #LeadLAP
Q5: Here’s a big thought from the book: “Words are manifested leadership”. What does this bring to mind for you as a leader or as the one being led? #LeadLAP
A5: Words, whether in an email, social media, or in person matter. The "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" saying is false. Words hurt or lift up. Choose the positive. It matters. #LeadLAP
"I wonder..." is inviting, innocuous, and is a pathway to engaging, collaborative discussions focused on instructional refinement. Just leading with that alone is a difference maker for some teachers as how they've been approached before is in stark contrast. 👊🏽 #LeadLAP
A5: A plant will grow with rain, but a ray of sunshine can make a world of difference. Positive words and actions will transform you into a person who leads and loves. #LeadLAP
A5: This reminds me of the need for us, as leaders, to be very intentional with the words that we choose and use daily to communicate our purpose and expectations. Words matter. Choose them wisely. #leadlap
Had to principal for a bit, but I’m jumping back in! A5: Language matters even though some don’t think so! Sometimes it is about HOW things are said! #LeadLAP
A5. What if you slowed down and thought about how the words you speak can either make a connection or fall way short? Why would we want to spend our time doing anything less than making connections?
#LeadLAP
So true. I'm impulsive and have a clear understanding of my direction and goals. Sometimes I have to slow down in order to make sure that there is a tone of empathy and that I am seeing all sides #LeadLAP
A5: This reminds me of the need for us, as leaders, to be very intentional with the words that we choose and use daily to communicate our purpose and expectations. Words matter. Choose them wisely. #leadlap
A5 With such great answers to this already, it's brought my thinking to this: When I'm thinking about vision, direction, or issues, it helps to share those thoughts so others can help build on them & co create them. Words bring intent to thoughts. #Leadlap
A4: Also... just pay attention! Sometimes we get so focused, so determined, so caught up in the "stuff" that we forget to slow down and pay attention to people. Give yourself permission to slow down and engage in real conversations with folks. #LeadLAP
A6: When I feel the critic is being constructive I am all for the feedback. I'm constantly trying to grow so it's great. I don't do as well when I asume someone is a constructive critic and they turn out to be or sound destructive. Confession: I may tear up. #LeadLAP
Q6: We’ll always have critics. Some are destructive and some constructive. Constructive critics aim to help you succeed, get you back on course. Self-reflection time. Do you usually handle the constructive critics well, or get upset? #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A5 always remember that those you lead will pay attention to that which you do. So if your questions are always about bulletin boards your staff will focus on that if you ask about literacy numeracy and instruction they will focus on that. I choose the ladder
Q6: We’ll always have critics. Some are destructive and some constructive. Constructive critics aim to help you succeed, get you back on course. Self-reflection time. Do you usually handle the constructive critics well, or get upset? #LeadLAP
Sorry #LeadLAP I’ve got to sneak out early. It’s a frigid 7 degrees here this morning and I’ve got soup to make! 😁 Thankful for my PLN! I appreciate the opportunity to have taken part! ❤️
#LeadLAP
I have found that writing allows me to think through my feelings before talking. Anytime I can, I try to write it all down. It’s important to acknowledge our own feelings but not project those on others. If I’m frustrated, I write it & feel more equipped to deal. #LeadLAP
A6. I have gotten better at handling constructive feedback better and also not letting the destructive comments derail us from our focus. It’s all about mindset and trust. #LeadLAP
A4: Support risk-taking, facilitate an environment where people can feel free to try and not be afraid of failing. Then help them learn from their mistakes and try again #LeadLAP
Q4: Sometimes our roles feel more like a “gotcha” than “I got your back!” What can we do to make sure students and staff know we got their back? #LeadLAP
A6: Constructive critics are the best - if they come with some possible solutions I think the difference for me on critique is that willingness to say, "here is some things to work on & here is how you might approach it". Instead of "these are things you need to work on" #LeadLAP
Q6: We’ll always have critics. Some are destructive and some constructive. Constructive critics aim to help you succeed, get you back on course. Self-reflection time. Do you usually handle the constructive critics well, or get upset? #LeadLAP
A6. I truly feel as though I can receive constructive criticism well. I think the key is being confident that what you are doing is worth doing corectly. #LeadLAP
Definitely digging that guidance Tara! As always you're on point. We as human beings crave clarity, and coaching/leadership is no different especially with the feedback we provide to those in our sphere of influence. 👊🏽#LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A6 I always assume that those I work with have good intentions and I tell them so so a criticism is simply someone expressing concern and possibly an opportunity to vet an idea or process which has been missed, listen and then chose to clarify or take action:)
A6: Truth be told, both. Am a very reflective person, so criticism can hurt/upset me, but I reflect, don't publicize my feelings, & then look for growth opportunities or realize I'm spot on & continue pushing forward. I can take push back generally, but it can upset. #LeadLAP
A6: I 💙 feedback! I even try to be reflective when the feedback is destructive. If I need to apologize, I do. Or, I explain the WHY behind a decision. Reflection is reflection and can be done no matter the feedback! #LeadLAP
A6: I may not enjoy hearing it but I will reflect on it and give it a great deal of thought. I would much rather staff members say it to me than talk about it in the parking lot. We are a team that works together. Healthy conflict will lead us to being a better team. #leadlap
A6: Feedback and criticism are easier to take from people you respect. When it comes from others, I try to be reflective so that I can understand with empathy. What didn't I do to help them understand or make them feel valued? #LeadLAP
A6: Who doesn't want to always handle criticism well? Always is a difficult window of time! I always do my best and still can fall short of perfection. Sometimes falling short can lead to moving forward. We are all human! #leadlap
Q6: We’ll always have critics. Some are destructive and some constructive. Constructive critics aim to help you succeed, get you back on course. Self-reflection time. Do you usually handle the constructive critics well, or get upset? #LeadLAP
A6: I truly believe EVERYONE takes bits of criticism in some personal way no matter how thick skinned you say you are. As long as that drives positive reflection & desire to improve something (if needed) & does not linger in lowering self-esteem or self-worth bring it on!#LeadLAP
Awe, thanks Pam.😊 It is a lot of schools. I have yet to have a week where I get everywhere I want to go, but that’s always my goal and helps me be equitable and purposeful with my days. #leadlap
A6 I handle constructive critics more easily now - I'm so hard on myself, I think darn I should have known that. I'm also finding ways to take destructive criticism and model taking it constructively. I take charge of that conversation and try to change it. #leadlap
A5 Words are powerful but without action are quickly devalued.
That being said, leaders make mistakes, too. We are ALL human—& might be consumed with emotions in the heat of the battle. So, we also must give 2nd chances.
In all we do, Be REAL. It shows & it SPEAKS.
#leadlap
After NaOWriMo, students eager to share “novels” with family and friends. One came back yesterday in tears after mom trashed her story. Realized I’d thrown them to wolves. I’d coached peer feedback, but needed to remind families that these were fragile, baby stories. #LeadLAP
A6: Constructive critics I’m good with, because it’s easy to have conversations with them. Critics who fail to provide solutions when they bring up problems ... not so much. #leadlap
I have found that writing allows me to think through my feelings before talking. Anytime I can, I try to write it all down. It’s important to acknowledge our own feelings but not project those on others. If I’m frustrated, I write it & feel more equipped to deal. #LeadLAP
A6) While defensiveness isn’t helpful, many leaders do experience frustration, sadness and crises-of-confidence when criticism comes theIR way. Helps to have a strong, honest professional network to help provide clarity and support. #leadLAP
Q6: We’ll always have critics. Some are destructive and some constructive. Constructive critics aim to help you succeed, get you back on course. Self-reflection time. Do you usually handle the constructive critics well, or get upset? #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A5b if you assume that people are acting against you you assume a lot and worse you cut someone’s voice from your team making you weaker, opinions and criticisms have value assume good intentions until someone tells you themselves otherwise.
A6) I def love change and growth, however, when I get any kind of criticism I initially see it as a personal knock to me, so I have to step out and think “What’s the purpose of this input? Why might they be sharing this with me?” to help me step out of the “me zone”. #leadlap
I think this is true for most educators. Our harshest critics are ourselves. We can have a million things go right and one thing go bad and its the thing we dwell on. #LeadLAP
A6: I’ve got to be honest. I get upset. I go through a spectrum of emotions - defensive to anger to feelings of disappointment in myself for not doing better. But then I see the reality without taking it personally & am able to grow & learn. #LeadLAP
A5: Listening is a strength. Taking time to NOT produce words, to stop transmitting ”urgent” commands long enough to know what the team needs, what they most care about, to know how to lead them & where. Each one has a say & true engagement depends on being really heard. #LeadLAP
A6: At times I do feel a ‘gut reaction’ to criticism so I work on listening to the whole message and then reflecting on feedback - “Can I use this to grow?” #LeadLAP
A6. It is hard to hear your work criticized. But my decision to purposely listen rather than defend has been the single most important decision of my adult life. #LeadLAP

A7: This week I'll be lining up opportunities to present Googley PD so that I can renew my #GoogleET trainer certification. Hoping to put my nerdiness to good use. 😏 I'm also continuing #sketchnotes of my reflections from reading #REALedu! #LeadLAP@TaraMartinEDU

A6 Eek... You want honesty, right? Initially, I tense; but when given constructively, all these years of positive work, my readings & personal studies surface. I lrn much abt my tchg thru the ?s & comments of others. @mospillman#LeadLAP

Guilty! I always come around & I’ve always appreciated the honest feedback. I value it immensely. I grow from it every time - I just need time. #LeadLAP
A6: While steering the ship you will have cheerleaders and rock throwers. It is important to keep a balance while remaining on course. Constructive criticism is important fuel but steer away from destructive criticism as it will crush the ship destroying the dream. #LeadLAP
A7. Continue to be thoughtful in my conversations with Teachers, Students, Parents, and others. Keep open communication with a growth mindset. #LeadLAP
A1: Plans for this week (last before break)

Sometimes the cursing isn’t silent. 😳😳😳 It’s important to understand when we might have to take a moment, cut loose, and then come back and refocus. #leadlap
A7) I am recommitting to regularly reading two of the best education resources I know if: The Marshall Memo and The Main Idea. The first is weekly education-related article summaries, and the second is monthly education-related book summaries. Super helpful! #leadLAP

Me, too, Shelley! I'm so blessed to learn from Peter and his teacher/researchers... and from brilliant books that you've given to the world as well! Thanks to YOU, we have a plethora of books to choose from. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A7 Great educators/leaders take care of themselves so that they can take care of others, don’t give it all away or you won’t be able to help anyone:) get some rest, have fun, embrace your tribe:)
A7) My goal is to bring some fun into these last two weeks before break. Enjoy & communicate the creativity and brilliance of our kiddos and staff! (Finish my blog on motivation! how ironic is that?!) #Leadlap
Between report cards and Christmas concert prep this is a stressful time for everyone. I’m working to add more fun and caring to balance it out (student planned spirit day, check-ins with staff, decorations and music...) #LeadLAP
