Hey Paul & #pln365! Missed yall the last couple weeks, but I am back until hoops start up (next week for scrimmages)! I'm James from SC, HS Math T & aspiring admin.
Q1- Experience is often considered to be the greatest teacher. Share a lesson learned that may have been painful at the present time but has been instrumental to your growth. #pln365
A1: One that I am still learning in year 9, the line between being too firm (No smile til Christmas) and too lenient (letting too much of the small stuff go). #pln365
A1: Will never forget when a teacher asked to speak with me years ago. She came in and spoke for about five minutes before I attempted to "solve her problem." She politely helped me realize that she only wanted to talk and wasn't looking for advice. #lessonlearned#pln365
A1: I had to learn that not everyone centers student learning in the same way and that sometimes you have to walk away in order to live your values. #pln365
A1 - In the past, I wanted to try all the new things...gadgets, strategies, etc. If it was shiny and 'fun' I was all about it.
Fun doesn't always = learning
#pln365
Q1- Experience is often considered to be the greatest teacher. Share a lesson learned that may have been painful at the present time but has been instrumental to your growth. #pln365
A1: My first few years of teaching, I was teaching Spanish, not students. There are so many students who slipped through my fingertips until I had my own child and had that "how would I want my daughter to be treated?" filter. Now #SEL is at the TOP of my list.
#pln365
Q1: learning to not take failure personally was my hardest lesson to learn. My first year teaching when lessons didn’t work out like I’d envisioned for whatever reasoning, it was hard to separate myself and use it as a learning experience; like I’m able to now! #pln365
A1: this may sound a little vague, but I used to not own up to my mistakes hoping they would go unnoticed... when they were discovered, it was far worse than owning up to it from the get-go. No one likes admitting fault, but do it. It's the best way to grow. #pln365
A1: NOT to send emails when the subject is complicated or emotional - always try to speak face to face or at least over the phone so the intonation of your voice/heart can be clearly heard! #pln365
A1: I was a 2nd year teacher and made every mistake I could possibly make that year. I learned the hard knock lesson of determination. It taught me to strive to be the best & do my best to help my students despite what I was experiencing at that time. #pln365
A2: The belief that multitasking is an effective strategy. We only have 100% of anything to give. Attention diverted away from a task or experience results creates gaps in our learning and comprehension. #pln365
A2 - I'm not sure that EVERYone wants to learn... at least not at every point in their life. I wish it wasn't so, but I feel as if I've known people (yes - adults, too) in my life who don't WANT to learn. #pln365
A1. I learned that some teachers /administrators value adult comfort above meeting the needs of all Ss. Decisions were based on adult reasons & not Ss needs. #PLN365
Q1- Experience is often considered to be the greatest teacher. Share a lesson learned that may have been painful at the present time but has been instrumental to your growth. #pln365
A1 You don't know what you don't know until you are actually in the trenches.
The 1st P who interviewed me asked about "my kids". I was single & confused until I realized he was giving me possession of those Ss. I worked there 2 yrs til he retired. Best formative exp. #pln365
Q3: Fear of failure can be crippling for some and motivating for others. Share a fear that you've overcome that has motivated you to do great things. #pln365
A2: learning is memorizing facts. Used to be that maybe 30 years ago but now learning is abt synthesizing multiple data. Facts are not static anymore #pln365
A2: the misconception of learning types - that people can ONLY learn visually if they’re visual learners, etc. There are so many effective and varied instructional modalities that are helpful for ALL learners #pln365
A3: The fear of public speaking was once crippling for me but a college course changed that fear into an open door that would lead to many great things. #pln365
A2: Teachers have to provide everything for learning to happen. Students can do some of the leg work and build through different methodologies (Zone Prox Develp; inquiry learning, blended learning, etc.) #pln365
A2 All students (& adults) can learn. They can... if they have the desire! 1 failed 9th & 10th and then thanked me for the lesson. Desire and effort are necessary despite NCLB. #pln365
A3 Public Speaking. I use to be afraid of it, but now it's one of the things that I look forward to. I try to do a presentation/a workshop/consulting at least once a month.
I love sharing what I do with fellow educators!

A3 The fear of putting myself out there. Why would someone want to hear what I have to say, like if I presented at a conference? But now I realize the worst they can say is no, so I go for #AllTheThings#pln365
I left a stable teaching job for a coaching job in a totally different district. It was both scary and exciting. I also went from a non runner to a marathon runner... a feat I never thought would happen!#pln365
A3: I'm not sure I've overcome it, but I'm working on worrying less about pleasing others and making my own path instead. It's hard, because those old tapes play over and over in my head, but it's important to be who I am and do what I'm feeling called to do. #pln365
Q4: In our profession, many lessons are taught by adults. However, that doesn't mean that lessons cannot be learned from our students. Share an unforgettable lesson that you've learned from a student. #pln365
A3: Fear of leading out as a curriculum writer/presenter as a relatively new T in my district - I still sometimes must work to brush away anxiety before a presentation, but after it’s over it’s such a gift to spend time reflecting on the positive feedback Ts leave for me! #pln365
Q3: Fear of failure can be crippling for some and motivating for others. Share a fear that you've overcome that has motivated you to do great things. #pln365
A4: I've learned to never assume that similarities mean that things are exactly the same. Just because you think you've seen the movie before doesn't mean there won't be a plot twist in the end. #pln365
A3: The fear that asking for help signaled weakness was something I overcame early in my career thanks to some incredible mentors and coworkers who showed unbelievable kindness to me in my first years teaching (shout out to Mr. Gibbs, Ms. Israel and Mrs. Minton!) #pln365
A4 I taught freshmen English at an all-girls school. I thought I was funny; hilarious. In truth, I was sarcastic. One day after school, two Ss asked to talk w/ me. They told me I was sarcastic and that I hurt feelings when I made "jokes." That's a wake-up call and guts. #pln365
A3: IDK if I'll ever overcome it, but I fear parents being upset with something I'm doing (or not doing) in the classroom - because some of what I do is not typical. To overcome it, I CONSTANTLY evaluate if what I'm doing is right and good for my current students. #pln365
Q3: Fear of failure can be crippling for some and motivating for others. Share a fear that you've overcome that has motivated you to do great things. #pln365
I am teaching myself to play guitar ... the other day I was strumming at lunch with some of the kids and a girl said "You need to move where you have your thumb ... it will give you a better reach on the strings" BOOM! game changer. #pln365
A4: I learned that a student who is struggling at home may be struggling in my class. I learned to be available and listen when that is all they really need. #pln365
That is the only downside to Varsity being on Tuesday night. I am in 3 chats on Tuesdays, #TeachSC, #pln365, #CultureEd. I am not home until 10 most nights depending on where the game is.

A3 Fear of lack, not for myself but first my Ss. My 2nd year I wrote 2 grants and presented the results at the Florida CEC conference. Was providing transition skills before transition caught on. #pln365
A4: Had a happy, smart freshman. During a grad class, had a guest speaker from a local org which I looked up on my iPad... One service they offered was apartments for families transitioning from homelessness... my S was in that photo on website... Look closer, see more... #pln365
A2. You don’t have to teach Ss “how” to learn, you just teach. My Ss did not know how to take notes, use mnemonics, use flash cards etc. They did not know their learning styles as well. #pln365
A4: I learn from my students every day. They teach me how to persevere and to be empathetic. To meet them where they are. To be patient. To know we are all on a different journey with different ways of getting there. #pln365
A4: I've had students teach me that you never know when you're getting through. When they come back, or when they write you a note... those are precious things that keep me going, no matter if I see results soon or not. #pln365
A4: that relationship building is the form of best classroom management. I can’t say enough about the importance of relationships with your classes and your students #pln365
A4 As class advisor, my Ss wanted to ensure ALL could attend prom. ALL were included in fundraising and activities. Jr prom $26, Sr prom $20.06! Goal achieved... Caring and inclusion at its finest! #pln365
