  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Will never forget when a teacher asked to speak with me years ago. She came in and spoke for about five minutes before I attempted to "solve her problem." She politely helped me realize that she only wanted to talk and wasn't looking for advice. #lessonlearned #pln365

  • effortfuleduktr Nov 6 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1 - In the past, I wanted to try all the new things...gadgets, strategies, etc. If it was shiny and 'fun' I was all about it. Fun doesn't always = learning #pln365

  • Latimer1Kristi Nov 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: letting emotions take over when dealing with students in my early years of teaching. Everyone has a story and we have to listen. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
Classic balance. I’ve learned to smile more while doing a better job of communicating my expectations. #pln365
    In reply to @JWMcMillan803
  • BarbaraGruener Nov 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: My first few years of teaching, I was teaching Spanish, not students. There are so many students who slipped through my fingertips until I had my own child and had that "how would I want my daughter to be treated?" filter. Now #SEL is at the TOP of my list. #pln365
  • GohGaikJune Nov 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: learning to let go when the Ss are ready to self learn #pln365
  • Ms_Galasso Nov 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
Q1: learning to not take failure personally was my hardest lesson to learn. My first year teaching when lessons didn’t work out like I’d envisioned for whatever reasoning, it was hard to separate myself and use it as a learning experience; like I’m able to now! #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
Hey, Joy! Thanks for joining us #pln365
    In reply to @JoyKirr
  • herraaronfritz Nov 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
A1: this may sound a little vague, but I used to not own up to my mistakes hoping they would go unnoticed... when they were discovered, it was far worse than owning up to it from the get-go. No one likes admitting fault, but do it. It's the best way to grow. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
    Q2- Share a misconception about learning. #pln365

  • amynicolebettis Nov 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1: NOT to send emails when the subject is complicated or emotional - always try to speak face to face or at least over the phone so the intonation of your voice/heart can be clearly heard! #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:43 PM EST

    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • jaslyn4ESL Nov 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
A1: I was a 2nd year teacher and made every mistake I could possibly make that year. I learned the hard knock lesson of determination. It taught me to strive to be the best & do my best to help my students despite what I was experiencing at that time. #pln365
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: The belief that multitasking is an effective strategy. We only have 100% of anything to give. Attention diverted away from a task or experience results creates gaps in our learning and comprehension. #pln365
  • JoyKirr Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 - I'm not sure that EVERYone wants to learn... at least not at every point in their life. I wish it wasn't so, but I feel as if I've known people (yes - adults, too) in my life who don't WANT to learn. #pln365
  • AP_HBouchard Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
Understanding that daily reflection is essential to growth - Would I have wanted to be a student in my class today? #pln365
  • effortfuleduktr Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2 - Here are two major misconceptions: 1. Learning styles are a thing. 2. The learning pyramid is statistically sound. https://t.co/GMwCDIabQC #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • TeachMrB Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2) Learning requires an adult to lead. Instead, some of my favorite lessons have been where I am more of an observer than leader. #PLN365
  • VNixon1988 Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A1. I learned that some teachers /administrators value adult comfort above meeting the needs of all Ss. Decisions were based on adult reasons & not Ss needs. #PLN365
    • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:36 PM EST
Q1- Experience is often considered to be the greatest teacher. Share a lesson learned that may have been painful at the present time but has been instrumental to your growth. #pln365
  • herraaronfritz Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: a lack of questions does not equal comprehension. #pln365
  • LynetteWnek Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A1: It is not always the teacher who has the answer. Sometimes we are the student. #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • Cathig8r Nov 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A1 You don't know what you don't know until you are actually in the trenches. The 1st P who interviewed me asked about "my kids". I was single & confused until I realized he was giving me possession of those Ss. I worked there 2 yrs til he retired. Best formative exp. #pln365

    True that! #pln365
    In reply to @TeachMrB

    In reply to @LynetteWnek
  • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:50 PM EST

    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • JWMcMillan803 Nov 6 @ 8:51 PM EST
A2: Teachers have to provide everything for learning to happen. Students can do some of the leg work and build through different methodologies (Zone Prox Develp; inquiry learning, blended learning, etc.) #pln365
    In reply to @PaulONeill1972
  • TeacherRunner42 Nov 6 @ 8:51 PM EST

A3 Public Speaking. I use to be afraid of it, but now it's one of the things that I look forward to. I try to do a presentation/a workshop/consulting at least once a month. I love sharing what I do with fellow educators! https://t.co/QirLAnwLDV #pln365
  • sew1080 Nov 6 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3 The fear of putting myself out there. Why would someone want to hear what I have to say, like if I presented at a conference? But now I realize the worst they can say is no, so I go for #AllTheThings #pln365
  • LynetteWnek Nov 6 @ 8:51 PM EST

A3: I'm not sure I've overcome it, but I'm working on worrying less about pleasing others and making my own path instead. It's hard, because those old tapes play over and over in my head, but it's important to be who I am and do what I'm feeling called to do. #pln365
  • D4Griffin3 Nov 6 @ 8:52 PM EST

  • amynicolebettis Nov 6 @ 8:54 PM EST
A3: Fear of leading out as a curriculum writer/presenter as a relatively new T in my district - I still sometimes must work to brush away anxiety before a presentation, but after it’s over it’s such a gift to spend time reflecting on the positive feedback Ts leave for me! #pln365
    • PaulONeill1972 - Moderator Nov 6 @ 8:48 PM EST

  • JWMcMillan803 Nov 6 @ 8:56 PM EST

  • PegGrafwallner Nov 6 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4 I taught freshmen English at an all-girls school. I thought I was funny; hilarious. In truth, I was sarcastic. One day after school, two Ss asked to talk w/ me. They told me I was sarcastic and that I hurt feelings when I made "jokes." That's a wake-up call and guts. #pln365
  • JoyKirr Nov 6 @ 8:57 PM EST
A3: IDK if I'll ever overcome it, but I fear parents being upset with something I'm doing (or not doing) in the classroom - because some of what I do is not typical. To overcome it, I CONSTANTLY evaluate if what I'm doing is right and good for my current students. #pln365

A4: I learned that a student who is struggling at home may be struggling in my class. I learned to be available and listen when that is all they really need. #pln365

That is the only downside to Varsity being on Tuesday night. I am in 3 chats on Tuesdays, #TeachSC, #pln365, #CultureEd. I am not home until 10 most nights depending on where the game is.

A3 Fear of lack, not for myself but first my Ss. My 2nd year I wrote 2 grants and presented the results at the Florida CEC conference. Was providing transition skills before transition caught on. #pln365

A4: Had a happy, smart freshman. During a grad class, had a guest speaker from a local org which I looked up on my iPad... One service they offered was apartments for families transitioning from homelessness... my S was in that photo on website... Look closer, see more... #pln365

A2. You don’t have to teach Ss “how” to learn, you just teach. My Ss did not know how to take notes, use mnemonics, use flash cards etc. They did not know their learning styles as well. #pln365

A4: I learn from my students every day. They teach me how to persevere and to be empathetic. To meet them where they are. To be patient. To know we are all on a different journey with different ways of getting there. #pln365

A4: I've had students teach me that you never know when you're getting through. When they come back, or when they write you a note... those are precious things that keep me going, no matter if I see results soon or not. #pln365
