Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about creating through making, music and art. #gtchat
A1) The idea of ‘making’ has come full circle recognizing it’s birth in past programs such as auto shop and home economics; yet realizing it is the basis for full research, development and innovation. #gtchat
A1 - Making used to me "making what the teacher told you to make out of the materials she provided." Now making has less direction and is more creative than just the colors you choose. Making is now about solving a problem - hopefully, authentic. #gtchat
A1) Well said @AguilarGHS We're moving away from thinking that crafting is creativity. We've seen the rise of maker spaces in the classrooms. It's a start. #gtchat
A1) ‘Making’ is interwoven into the curriculum of forward thinking schools who are benefiting from student engagement which improves attendance, behavior issues and increases academic gains. #gtchat
A1) My school has a Maker's Space in the Library that houses a 3-D Printer and other supplies, like duct tape to make things. We also have some amazing Tech Facilitators, @mrs_smoke and @MBrownEdTech that host global maker challenges, like the https://t.co/iyrS7OfTEZ#gtchat
A1 it has really become more about innovation and imagination, allowing makers to make what they come up with rather than following teacher/book directions #gtchat
A2) A ‘maker mindset’ values the creative use of available resources with a keen eye to budgetary constraints which allows makerspaces to exist across the economic spectrum of learners. #gtchat
GASP!!!! But woodshop is SO MUCH FUN! If I ever get to retire (bwahahahahaha...retire...it'll never happen) I want a workshop to built stuff. :) #gtchat
A2) A maker mindset is where students take what they know and use it in a new way. #empowerbook the book has a process to help you recognize where students are in the process. #gtchat
A2 - "This bothers me. How might I solve this problem? What don't I know? What do I need to know? Who is impacted by this problem? Will this work? Why or why not? How do I make it better? What other problems need solving?" #gtchat
A2 Being curious and creative, open to making adjustments and changes, failing forward - being ok with making mistakes and learning from them, learning from others #gtchat
Longest day of the year? More time to learn! Our Programmable Boards @humble has over $450 worth of goodness at a price you name! https://t.co/eR2MSYA74F

A1) A Fuller Framework for Making in Maker Education https://t.co/SztfsvHsJQ - to continue to evolve #makered needs a strong framework #gtchat (I’m doing a workshop on it at #iste18 )
A3) For a successful makerspace, don’t forget to provide adequate space for makers, be aware of the needs of your makers commensurate with age and ability, and work within your budget. #gtchat
We are already halfway through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts about creating through making, music and art! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. #gtchat
A3 Our basement is where dying computer components go to be resurrected. It's like Frankenstein's monster down there, 24/7. I just don't ask questions anymore, only request the good nursing home, with the sommelier on call. #gtchat
#gtchat A3 The makers. Age is important. Space/location. Budget. Level of tech (high tech/low tech/mixed). And are the creations permanent or will they be deconstructed and parts reused (like Legos)

A3) Successful makerspaces are built on mentoring students by providing a wide-range of diversity in teachers, community leaders and an inclusive community of participants. #gtchat
Yes! Allow staff to explore materials and even make! This will encourage them to use the space and remove any anxiety they may have in utilizing the space. #gtchat
A3 "The common thread of all makerspaces is that they provide a physical place where people can gather together to make things, think creatively, and explore, using a variety of materials and supplies." via https://t.co/F8jMwkL3Gn#gtchathttps://t.co/wo9XOkG5Ri
A4) Integrating ‘making’ into the curriculum can be as simple as having students share what they learn to re-imagining creative assessments of products. #gtchat
A4) Students can be given opportunities to apply knowledge gained in ‘making’ in pursuit of academic goals. For example; utilizing technology in science classes via 3-D printing or developing virtual reality projects. #gtchat
Start by allowing educators time to design this important work. Problems should consider different perspectives and relevance to other areas than just subject silos. Who can contribute? #gtchat@SteffanyBatik and @NewTechCoppell do a great job with this!

#gtchat A4 I did one in my high school ELA classes. Students had to create a 3-D model of vocabulary words using low tech supplies. Words were things like "bias" and "predominance". Visible thinking for sure.
A4 Maker is a philosophy about the journey of learning. Give your students challenge the combine content pieces have have them solve with whatever tool that they think is best. Remember to have them share at the end #gtchat
#gtchat A5 students learn that there is more than one answer and that the best ideas are often the craziest. It teaches them how to think outside the box.
A4) Integrate it as part of personalized learning. It is another way for students to show you what they know or to use information they have learned in a unique way. Create is the highest level of Blooms Revised after all. #gtchat
A5) Students who are involved in ‘making’ can affect the future by creating a culture of sharing what they learn with a broader community to work on real world projects. #gtchat
A5) Seems like a great time to give a shout out to Iggy Peck Architect! We’re doing a better job of making “Making, Creating, & Expressing” a normal part of our day instead of the occasional lesson. Kids gets so inspired by the great books. #gtchat@andreabeaty
A6 LIBRARIES are your friend. So is the internet, especially your PLN. But there's really nothing as good as boredom and a big ole box of STUFF for inspiration and making. #gtchat

A5) Some of the solutions students devise when making could pave the way for future inventions. Great opportunity to connect with mentors and encourage entrepreneurship #gtchat
A6) Making has expanded beyond the walls of the schoolhouse and is an intricate part of many community centers, university outreach programs and summer programs for students. #gtchat

#gtchat A6 makers spaces aren't the domain of schools and libraries. Many independent ones are popping in communities all over. A Google search should help find one nearby.
A6) So many YouTube channels. If there is a creative tool or process the kid likes or a theme of interest, search YouTube for relevant keywords. #gtchat
A6 - City library, biodiversity center, local art classes/studios, your garage, local music camps, museum (flight, art, natural history, history) camps, etc. #gtchat
