#NHCSchat is a monthly twitter chat for, about and by educators in New Hanover County, North Carolina. #NHCSchat is an opportunity for teachers, administrators and other educators in southeastern NC to grow and develop their personal learning network (PLN) by connecting to other educators in our district and around the world. This monthly chat will create a forum for NHCS educators to gather virtually around the common interest of providing the best possible learning experience for students in our district. Chat topics will vary but will focus on best practices for teaching and learning in the digital age and will be moderated primarily by NHCS educators.
I'm Christi Lea, a high school Spanish teacher and Lead Mentor of our BT Support on Site Program at Hoggard High School. @HoggardHS#nhcsCHAT#nhcsbt#nhcsworldlang
Hi! My name is Bianca Hunt. I teach 4th grade ELA and SS @AndersonElem ...home of the Awesome Admirals! I'm happy to join the chat this evening #NHCSchat
A1: My granddad always told me that education was the one thing that no one could take from you and to get as much as you can. That is my "why." I try to instill this same principle in my students by fostering a love for learning in my classroom. #nhcschat
Q1: I knew early on in my life that I was called to be a teacher. It has been a passion of mine deep down in my heart ever since I had an inspiring teacher that motivated me to make an impact in the lives of others. #nhcschat
My WHY is to get students to believe/see they can do/be anything (kind, hard-working, a teacher, lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc.)...all of life is choices. "If you think you can or think you can't - you're right!" -Henry Ford #NHCSchat
A1: I value meaningful relationships. Conversation is key in my classroom, especially when building these relationships, so I try my best to facilitate conversations to better engage my students academically while getting to know who they are as people. #NHCSchat
A1: Because every student, deserves every opportunity, in every school, every day! I hope my "why" is reflected in my daily practice @AldermanEagles! #SoaringEagles CAN!!! #NHCSchat
A1: I love to encourage people to live in the intersection of their passion & area of giftedness while capitalizing on their strengths/helping them grow. #NHCSChat
Q1: I teach to impact students and help them grow as an individual. The growth my students make as people has been greater than all of the money the world could offer. #nhcschat
A1. My WHY is knowing that we can change the world for all kids.
Creating a school culture that embraces Ss and trusts great teachers to teach both hope and skills makes all the difference.
#NHCSchat
A1: My junior year of high school passing the NC Teaching Fellows confirmed my future. I want to be the voice, advocate, and consistent loving environment for my students. Encouraging and supporting their passions and learning. #NHCSchat
A1: My "why" is to instill a belief in students that they are capable of overcoming obstacles to be the best version of themselves. I try and demonstrate this belief through my actions with Ss and Ts. #NHCSChat
A1: My 'why' is personalizing learning - getting learners to make that connection and investment in the lessons/activities we are presenting to them so they can grow and understand what is in them AND around them. #NHCSchat
A1: My "why" is the belief that every student can learn and has the right to learn. I demonstrate that daily through my relationships with students and staff and holding high expectations for all students. #NHCSchat
A1: I’m a lifelong longer, leading Ss and BTs by example & encouraging colleagues to do the same. I share my learning strategies with my Ss & encourage colleagues to present & attend as much PD as possible. #nhcschat#nhcsbt#NHCSworldlang@HoggardHS
A1: My WHY is the Students! They are just as important in my life as I am to them. We always need to have in mind "What is best for the students" I model this through my planning, collaborating, conversations and advocating. #nhcschat
A1: My 'why' is developing relationships with my Ss & encouraging them to engage in their curiosity of how the world works. I want my Ss to continue asking questions because learning is never ‘done.’ #nhcschat#lifelonglearning
An engaged #PLN can ignite teacher leadership and foster collaboration & innovation. #edchat Great to see the #NHCSChat discussion here tonight. Teachers and principals sharing insights from @NewHanoverCoSch and connecting Professional Learning Networks.
A2: I love the collaboration that occurs in my Masterminds groups, and of course, in our #NHCSchat Twitter Chat. We are fortunate to have such amazing teachers and administrators in @NewHanoverCoSch! #NHCSchat
A2:Because we recognize the value so many of our teachers can offer to others as they collaborate throughout the district, we provide Regional BT/Mentor book studies & a platform for lead mentors as well as emerging leaders to collaborate #NHCSChat
Q2: We all have unique skills and knowledge, so it can be worth it to share those things with others. For example, I am a tech whiz, so I work with other members of my staff to show how to integrate technology throughout their lessons. #nhcschat
A2: I always try to be open to sharing resources. So much of what I do in my classroom has been “borrowed” from other Ts so I’m always willing to share my resources as well. It helps to build relationships with others and it’s always nice when they can return the favor. #NHCSchat
A2: I believe our Principal Cadres are amazing sources of collaboration.... Groups of like-minded, skilled professionals who come together to challenge, share, and learn in the name of school improvement! #NHCSchat
A2: I collaborate w colleagues daily by asking questions, sharing ideas, & observing. Pineapple charts to welcome colleagues to my room is helpful to help "find the time" for observations.
Staying connected with @UNCWWatsonEd builds collaboration with other counties. #NHCSchat
A2: I love to share new technology/PDs with my team and other Ts who may be interested in learning. I do so via my leadership roles and simply by emailing the staff. I've seen a great increase of BT and veteran Ts trying new things @PineValleyElem !! #NHCSChat
#NHCSchat Creating the future by fostering a love of learning; my why. Being present for your students and colleagues. Letting people know they can count on you by your daily actions is important is facilitating my why. It's the little things that make a big difference.
#NHCSchat
A2: One of the many things I love about my job is that I am able to see what goes on at schools all across the district. Often, I can connect people and ideas because of that and see things grow stronger through collaboration with folks outside of their schools! #NHCSchat
A2: Build bridges with colleagues by sharing ideas and resources, having conversations either about what is happening in or out of the classroom to establish relationships. #NHCSchat
A2: Across the district, I rely on tech to make those connections. It’s awesome to see what other Ts are up to Twitter. I also love @SusanHitt's blog, Education Celebration, for seeing what other English Ts are doing! #NHCSchat
A2: #NHCSChat has been a huge resource by being able to see what is happening in classrooms and connect. Also working closely with the different departments around our district helps give me a bigger picture.
A2: I love our masterminds group that @araines_ created. The articles we discuss are very relevant to what we see in the classroom. I also love collaborating with other teachers from other schools, grades, and content. #nhcschat
A2: @mswiggs_ and I plan for an hour every week together and I reach out through Twitter. I follow other math Ts and hashtags. If something catches my eye I reply and ask for more info. Also love our weekly masterminds group, which allows me to follow up with ?'s #nhcschat
A2: I try to collaborate with colleagues in areas that they excel or specialize in via face-to-face, email or social media interaction. @Libteach16 has been very helpful with continuing my lessons in the library this year. I have enjoyed collaborating with her! #NHCSchat
Q2: Throughout our school, we share what works with our colleagues in order for us to have the highest effect size for our students with our collective teacher efficacy. We share different strategies across the district through collaborative cohorts with other schools. #nhcschat
A2: I try to share (and model) new ideas and strategies and always offer my help if needed. I try to showcase and bring attention to what others are doing through pineapple charts and social media #nhcschat
A2: I ❤️ my Masterminds group. I also try to visit other schools and classrooms as much as I can. I look for ways to be helpful in my building. #NHCSchat
A2: I love our masterminds group that @araines_ created. The articles we discuss are very relevant to what we see in the classroom. I also love collaborating with other teachers from other schools, grades, and content. #nhcschat
#NHCSchat A2: Conversations are key in learning about what everyone has to offer. Simply talking/greeting people allows you to reach out and help or reach out for help when the time arises.
A2: I also seek out opportunities to present as much as possible at local, regional, and national conferences. Especially with @cricketlea and @misskatyleo7#nhcschat
So true, Blair! The learning community will take notice when they see educators engaged in this important work! #NHCSchat They will see and understand your "why"!
#NHCSchat Creating the future by fostering a love of learning; my why. Being present for your students and colleagues. Letting people know they can count on you by your daily actions is important is facilitating my why. It's the little things that make a big difference.
A3: My Ss often surprise & remind me of our classroom culture. They know the importance of trying your best & supporting one another through successes & being encouraging during failures. They applaud & give positive feedback often, w/o prompting. Makes my heart smile. #NHCSChat
A3: I want my students to feel challenged, but confident and valued as individuals. I try to ensure that each student has a voice & everyone has the opportunity to share thoughts/ideas. So much of this happens through the discussions I try to facilitate each day. #NHCSchat
Q3: My students believe in themselves. They believe that each and every day is a new opportunity to grow as a scholar and that they are in charge of the outcome of their learning and their day #nhcschat
A3: I believe Ss now enjoy math b/c of my class. They are physically and mentally present. More Ss are learning to advocate for themselves and speak up when they don't understand. Ss are using the "hot seat" on a more consistent basis and sometimes even battle over it! #nhcschat
A3: I try my best to provide a warm, nurturing environment for my Ss to feel comfortable. It's especially important in Language classrooms where their affective filter is high. This is my classroom screen saver that changes seasonally. #nhcschat#nhcsbt#NHCSworldlang@HoggardHS
A3: The thing I am MOST excited about these days is our classroom blog. Giving the students a voice has helped us build (deeper) relationships and show them that their voices matter. https://t.co/eXPLPapeCN#NHCSchat
Q3: My students believe in themselves. They believe that each and every day is a new opportunity to grow as a scholar and that they are in charge of the outcome of their learning and their day #nhcschat
Yes! Lifelong learning! Even as a technology facilitator, there is much I can learn in regards to tech. I think it's so important for teachers to see me learning new things and getting out of my comfort zone #nhcschat
A3: In my classroom students knew that our room was a community of learners that supported one another in our learning efforts. Students believed that they could achieve no matter what circumstances they faced and that I would help them in any way.
A3: We read a daily inspirational quote in my classroom. Through these quotes my Ss understand that they are the ones who are in control of their futures. They can be or do anything that they put their minds to. #NHCSchat
A3:
Ss know it is important to utilize their time and make the most of every minute in class, there is so much you can accomplish in 90 minutes. #NHCSchat
A1. @ncseatech principal with my ‘why’: I was one of the lucky ones who knew very early on that being an educator was my purpose on Earth. I work to really see children because I remember how it felt to appear one way and feel another. #nhcsCHAT
A3: Although we only spend one semester together, my Ss are family & we have formed an amazing community! I've been told by my Ss that they appreciate my calm and positive approach and in return, my Ss know what is expected and how to treat others in our classroom! #NHCSchat
A1. @ncseatech principal with my ‘why’: I was one of the lucky ones who knew very early on that being an educator was my purpose on Earth. I work to really see children because I remember how it felt to appear one way and feel another. #nhcsCHAT
A4: Providing resources and opportunities to observe other teachers. Also supporting during open house and the first few days of school to help set up positive, loving and respectful classroom learning environments. Book studies/professional reading suggestions too! #NHCSChat
A4 Consistent meetings w @MsSingleton3PV to support, coach, & encourage. Every time we discuss her students' successes & challenges. I encourage when I see her taking the time to make learning pertinent to kids & investing in them...she does this so well! #NHCSchat#pvttchat
A4 Mentors & veteran teachers help normalize our early reactions to teaching. They help BTs fail forward & remind newer Ts that we all struggle to reach all kids. Sharing tips & success stories can often save a BTs day! Be authentic; build your tribe. #NHCSchat#KidsDeserveIt
A4: Give ideas for "ice breaker" activities for beginning of year; allow BTs to talk out thought process with situations that arise and offer suggestions #NHCSchat
A4: Failure is the only real path to growth! Let new teachers (and students) see you make mistakes...then share with them how you reflected and shifted your practice as a result. Taking risks and letting your guard down will help bring others in. #NHCSchat
A4: I think mentors/veteran teachers can share with BT’s what worked for them and some things they would have done differently as it relates to establishing positive, nurturing relationships and environments. #NHCSchat
A4: I think mirroring that relationship colleague to colleague is a great place to start. When I feel comfortable and encouraged, I’m more likely to comfort and encourage my own students. #NHCSchat
Q4: The county does an amazing job of ensuring that BTs are prepared for the classroom. We are given the chance to go observe veteran teachers in their classrooms and collaborate with Ts of all levels in order to develop our craft of teaching. #nhcschat
A4: We can help BTs understand the purpose/value of getting to know their students & families and strategies to do so. This is the first step in creating a positive, nurturing environment where all students are loved & valued. #NHCSChat
A1. @ncseatech principal with my ‘why’: I was one of the lucky ones who knew very early on that being an educator was my purpose on Earth. I work to really see children because I remember how it felt to appear one way and feel another. #nhcsCHAT
Your calm, collected approach is contagious. Even in grad school you always had it all together. Made things so much better for all of us crazies! #nhcschat
A4: Help them expand their own network and find opportunities to improve practices. Attending PD off site is a great way to make new connections #nhcschat
A4: Mentors can support BTs in establishing positive, nurturing relationships & environments by sharing PBIS strategies, helping BTs decide routines & procedures for their classrooms & modeling positive relationships with all students. Connecting with students is key! #NHCSchat
A4: Creating an open door policy is a huge part of the relationship process. Letting/showing them that was you discuss is confidential and stay between the 2 of you. Offering to help in any way possible with what ever they need. #NHCSchat
A4: Like my A3 - nurturing environments, I encourage Ts to find “1 special thing” personalized to their teaching/classroom that shows the Ss that they care. “Dime Algo Bueno” from @ProfeRoth – 3 Ss share 1 good thing each class! Connections with Ss!
@ProfaPage#nhcschat#nhcsbt
A4: This is hard for me as a 10th year teacher (1st in middle school) because the kids are always changing and the culture is always different, but RELATIONSHIPS are key to student success. #nhcschat
#NHCSchat A3: I've had substitute teachers comment that my student ran the room while I was out. It makes me so proud that they are independent, respectful and leading even when I'm not present. Knowing that they hold themselves to that high standard is more than I could ask.
On the first day I put a math problem on the board and purposefully get it incorrect. It creates a whole discussion on how making mistakes is a great thing to learn from. #nhcschat
A4: Failure is the only real path to growth! Let new teachers (and students) see you make mistakes...then share with them how you reflected and shifted your practice as a result. Taking risks and letting your guard down will help bring others in. #NHCSchat
A4: Failure is the only real path to growth! Let new teachers (and students) see you make mistakes...then share with them how you reflected and shifted your practice as a result. Taking risks and letting your guard down will help bring others in. #NHCSchat
A4:
Don't forget about them. There is always so much going on on any given day in a classroom or school, don't forget to check in on the newbies.
#nhcschat
I am so excited that we have so many formal and informal mentoring relationships @AndersonElem Sometimes professional support is needed & sometimes it’s about life and survival! #nhcsCHAT
A4: My mentor @AlisonLinkner is a rockstar. She is always there for me. As a beginning teacher I am so thankful for her time and effort in helping me perfect my craft. She was my fourth grade teacher so it has been an awesome opportunity to work with her as a colleague #NHCSchat
A4: Failure is the only real path to growth! Let new teachers (and students) see you make mistakes...then share with them how you reflected and shifted your practice as a result. Taking risks and letting your guard down will help bring others in. #NHCSchat
A5: Get to know the colleague, help them out when needed, include them at lunch or in planning. Helps to teach students how to welcome new students in the classroom. #NHCSchat
A5: To me, it’s the little things that go a long way. A quick “How’s it going?” text or just popping in to say hello are HUGE when it comes to making me feel supported! #NHCSchat
A5: Having Ts pop by to ask how I'm settling into the new environment. Also I had Ts help me set up programs I was unfamiliar with & share resources. They never made me feel I was asking too many questions as I was learning. It has helped me pay it forward. #NHCSChat#pvttchat
Q5: Being a BT, I feel that the ideas that we have to bring to the table have been appreciated and accepted. It is great to know that no matter the expertise, we can all come together for collaboration and I can always leave with a new strategy in my pocket. #nhcschat
A5: To ensure this culture of encouragement, find and stick with people who believe in and believe with you. Find and stick with your tribe... the ones who pulls the magic (and not the madness) out of you! #NHCSchat
A4: Teaming helps. Veteran teachers can model/share all of these skills with BT teachers when paired on the same team. Share the children, share the strategies. #nhcschat
#NHCSchat A4: You must be the example. Setting high standards for students let's them know how much you believe in them. Your repeated support helps them transfer your belief in them to a belief in themselves and their classmates.
A4: Be enthusiastic & ask questions about what we are doing in our classrooms. I can’t tell you how many times my mentors at Hoggard have brightened my day just by asking me how my classes are going & if I needed anything! @cricketlea@Dr_Katie_S_Fink#NHCSchat
A5: Start my introducing myself and letting them know I am a person of contact if they need anything. Even if I am not their mentor it is helpful knowing familiar faces around the building. #NHCSchat
Q5: With the ever-changing curriculum and standards in our profession, it is so important that we are collaborating with one another to work smarter and not harder. #nhcschat
A5: The staff @AndersonElem have been helpful by providing any resource I've asked for and even just words of advice. My grade level team made me feel included from the beginning. I reached out to other BT’s @ my school to start meeting just to vent/talk about anything. #NHCSchat
A5: Sometimes a "hello" in the hallway breaks the ice to begin a collaboration. I always seem to learn the best ideas from the new colleagues around me! #NHCSChat
A5: I was blessed to be embraced by some of the most wonderful veteran teachers when I started teaching. They shared ideas, let me observe them teaching, and provided feedback for my teaching. I've tried to embrace new teachers the way I was and always offer support. #NHCSchat
A5 I made sure to offer my 1st @Seesaw training @PineValleyElem
early in the year to help build the professional growth culture. My team embraced me by getting together in the summer to hang & get to know each other! Meant a lot. #NHCSchat#pvttchat@MrsHawkinsPV@lesley_jernigan
A5: As a 2nd yr teacher, I was NOT embraced as a new colleague so I helped create the Support on Site Program to ensure all BTs and New Ts were welcomed and supported in the building #nhcschat
A5:
I reach out first and often. Not everyone wants to be the one to ask questions or request help, so I make sure that I keep the door open to help new colleagues! I'm so thankful @GubitzSarah has trusted me to look out for our new VAC's!
#nhcschat
A5: When I first started at #traskmiddle I remember @STEM_LEAKE helped me out so much my first year. He answered ALL my questions on a daily basis. He also went out of his way to check in with me as well and he was not even my mentor. I do the same for my Ss now. #NHCSchat
A5: I try and help them get all of the tech set up and go over how we handle laptop and iPad carts. And of course, getting logged into all of their accounts. It may not sound like much but I think those little things can add up and be overwhelming #nhcschat
A6: Veterans can help BTs with classroom/behavior management tips. This seems to be the biggest struggle for novice teachers.
I think BTs can help veteran teachers with the ever-changing technology. They're coming from a more "tech-savvy" generation.
#nhcschat
A5: I seriously could not have survived my time as a BT without my #traskmiddle family. They have answered my countless questions over the years & challenged me to constantly grow & learn as a teacher #NHCSchat
A5:
When I first came on as a VAC at Hoggard, @GubitzSarah gave her email, phone number, and facebook lol she made sure I had contact with her when needed! It helped when navigating a new position.
#NHCSchat
A5: If you see a new face in your building, you should say "Hello" and Introduce yourself. Education is all about relationships and positive relationships between the adults in the building will trickle down to the students #nhcschat
A6: BTs often need help in establishing structures that lead to longterm effective classroom management. Veteran teachers need to be reminded that the students in our classrooms are always changing, so the classroom must change, too! #NHCSchat
A6: Veterans can learn about new strategies, technology, and creative ideas from BT, BT can need support in managing workload, classroom management, differentiation. #NHCSchat
Q6: I feel as a BT, I am needing assistance in strategies that work for test-taking and the most effective instructional strategies to learn from experienced teachers where they have shown growth and making the tweaks to match my students' needs. #nhcschat
A6: Veteran Ts can help with classroom management and handling all of the “non-teaching” aspects of the job (i.e. paperwork, dealing with parents, etc). BTs can help with technology integration and new ideas; They also bring a renewed energy to the classroom/school #nhcschat
A6: Validation and reassurance are key! Tackling the tougher issues in the classroom is so much easier when your colleagues make you feel validated and appreciated. #NHCSchat
A6: Understanding school/grade level curriculum and testing. Having a BT observe these lessons and testing being completed.
Afterwards, having veteran Ts monitor to ensure it is being done correctly and with fidelity by observing & providing support/advice. #NHCSChat
I'm glad my colleagues @PineValleyElem have embraced the opportunities to learn new technology by just trying it out! It has been a great experience to help them! #NHCSChat
A6: Veterans can help BTs with classroom/behavior management tips. This seems to be the biggest struggle for novice teachers.
I think BTs can help veteran teachers with the ever-changing technology. They're coming from a more "tech-savvy" generation.
#nhcschat
A5: I was new to my grade level this year so it almost felt like I was new to the school. I am thankful to my team who truly tucked me under their wings to help me adapt. I like to have open door policy with new colleagues. If you need something come find me. #NHCSchat
A6: As a veteran teacher I am constantly learning new technology from @misskatyleo7 I am also constantly new ideas from @mswiggs_ especially when she returns from PD at @UNCWWatsonEd It is so exciting! #NHCSchat#nhcsbt
A6: I often hear BTs needing support with behavior management, implementing routines/procedures, & needing resources to support instruction and/or interventions. As a veteran teacher my needs have been how to implement technology effectively and ways to be innovative. #NHCSchat
Q6: BTs are coming out with fresh new ideas and strategies to use in the classroom from their college courses. They are able to provide us with new strategies to use in our classrooms to help deliver instruction or manage classrooms #nhcschat
#NHCSchat A5: I was fortunate to have a school full of teachers embrace me my first year teaching and my amazing BT mentor @MarciaKearns . I always invite new teachers into my classroom to help with ideas or offer supplies from my room that they may need.
A5: BT’s and veterans are all in this together, we need to support each other by collaborating as much as possible. It really starts with building relationships and a school culture that we are all learning. Teachers never stop searching for new ways to teach.#NHCSChat
#NHCSchat A5: I was fortunate to have a school full of teachers embrace me my first year teaching and my amazing BT mentor @MarciaKearns . I always invite new teachers into my classroom to help with ideas or offer supplies from my room that they may need.
A7: Teacher burnout is real for us all! The best advice I can give is to take time for yourself! Make time!
Remember: Even though this job is tough, it is worth it! You make a difference. #nhcschathttps://t.co/jCzwXWVDA2
A6: I absolutely love observing other Ts classrooms! It's the most effective way to learn more about teaching and seeing new strategies in action! #NHCSchat
A7: Through building relationships OUTSIDE of the classroom. I firmly believe in the idea of “finding your tribe” and having a strong support system of teacher-friends! #NHCSchat
A7 Schools should have a team whose job is to train/orient new Ts to the school. Train Ts to progress monitor, MTSS process, classroom management, what to do @ regular school events, etc. Set them up for success @ that school. I volunteer @PineValleyElem!
#NHCSchat#pvttchat
A7: Having an active and helpful mentor as well as another colleague to help teach school and county procedures. Even discussing the importance of self care and reducing the amount of work done outside of school/how late or early they arrive or stay. #NHCSChat
A7 If you don't take care of yourself, you can't be your best for the kids! Admin & mentors can drop by to say that it's ok to go home. Schedule evening activities away from school & walk out together. #NHCSchat
Q7: I have had one teacher at my school support me in more ways than one. She always sends me cards in my times of distress to give me that little "Pick Me Up" to keep me going. It takes a village to raise a child. #nhcschat
A6: BT’s can help inject some energy, enthusiasm, and new ideas into the building. Vets can help BT’s with some ideas that they know work based on experience. That collaboration is necessary! #NHCSChat
A6: Veterans support BTs with tried and true nuts and bolts, and BT’s support veterans with any new pulley or lever- the education machine needs both! @AndersonElem#nhcsCHAT
Q7: Empowerment goes SUCH a long way! BTs not only need to feel support but they also need constant reminders that they are doing a good job #traskmiddle#NHCSchat
A7: I appreciate the wellness initiatives that have started @AndersonElem thx to @KariBishopteach. This along with professional development days and even additional work days (aside from the scheduled days on the calendar) would help BT’s avoid burnout and be their best #NHCSchat
A7: It’s okay to set boundaries and protect time for yourself. If you are not taking care of yourself, you will not be as useful to those you serve. Be willing to ask for help if you need it #nhcschat
A7: We have to feel appreciated and the work that we are doing is valued. I think by continuing to recognize the good things we are seeing in #NHCSChat is a small step towards this.
A7:Many BTs are floaters. In our bulding, some veteran Ts offer to share rooms w/ floaters to provide a home base for them. This can help with stress level & provide opportunities for mentoring & coaching! A small act that goes a long way. @lbcasas33@HoggardHS#nhcschat#nhcsbt
A7: Making sure BT's have minimal amounts of extra duties to ensure they are using their time to plan and prepare. Mentors should be meeting with BT's consistently. Planning with coaches and partner teachers! #nhcschat
Q7: It helps when you work in an environment that is supportive and positive. If I notice someone having a tough day, I try to offer in any way to help them, even if it is just letting them go use the bathroom...which is so rare to get to do! :) #nhcschat
A7: Maybe we should stop putting so much pressure on BTs to be perfect on Day 1. Teaching is an ever-evolving craft. None of us have it figured out but we can support each other and help each other out! Having a positive, supportive network would help #nhcschat
A6: BTs always know popular culture and can really relate to being a student. I like to remind them that teaching is a marathon not a sprint. Train. Pace yourself. Breathe. Reflect. Repeat. #NHCSchat
A7: Our BT Support on Site Program Works hard to support & recognize our BTs with coaching AND fun treats throughout the year to keep them energized! Our BT Wish Tree is an annual hit! #nhcschat#nhcsbt@HoggardHS
Q7: It helps when you work in an environment that is supportive and positive. If I notice someone having a tough day, I try to offer in any way to help them, even if it is just letting them go use the bathroom...which is so rare to get to do! :) #nhcschat
And, no one ever has this teaching thing figured out. There is always room for growth! Reflection and admitting something didn't go as well as planned is 100% ok #nhcschat
A6: Veteran teachers can help with typical school procedures. They can also help support them with curriculum, IEPs and classroom management. BTs can help veteran teachers remember their "Why". We were all there before, ready to conquer and change the world! #nhcschat
A7: Our BT Support on Site Program Works hard to support & recognize our BTs with coaching AND fun treats throughout the year to keep them energized! Our BT Wish Tree is an annual hit! #nhcschat#nhcsbt@HoggardHS
Q8: BTs and veteran teachers can work together through collaborative planning sessions in order to flex group students in order for students to get instruction tailored to their needs. We can better meet the needs of students with different learning styles. #nhcschat
#NHCSchat A6: Veteran teachers can offer advice on many managerial aspects of teaching: scheduling, assessments, school wide procedures, parent communication.
BTs can offer ideas for instructional practices, new technology, integration lessons.
Both can offer support.
A7: I am thankful to all the veteran teachers that come in almost everyday and encourage me to go home after school. Time managements key. We all know if we stayed until we were completely finished we would need a cot and coffee pot in every classroom. #NHCSchat
A7: My mentor leaves me a card every now and then to brighten my day! It definitely makes me feel encouraged! 😊 Also, taking time for self-care is a huge one! #NHCSchat
A8 Develop relationships. Build capacity. Allow teacher leaders to help improve other teachers' skills to foster student-focused, data informed conversations. Veterans can show how to interpret data down to individual Ss. #NHCSchat#BeTheOne#KidsDeserveIt
A8: I love incorporating cross-curricular lessons, even informally. Just talking w/ colleagues about what they’re teaching and then trying to incorporate their content into my lessons helps to support Ss while building deeper connections w/ other teachers/content areas. #NHCSchat
A8: Beginning and veteran teachers can come together in monthly meetings and bring resources to plan for the next month/quarter. This would be a great time to share things that have worked in the past and some new ideas/ways of differentiating for all students. #NHCSchat
A8: Really ensuring certain procedures & expectations are the same across grade levels & done with fidelity. This will help Ss & their families as they progress through school. Also hold meetings to reiterate the importance of efficacy & to keep teachers accountable. #NHCSChat
Q8: I believe that coming together for collaborative planning will help them work together for student achievement. It allows for teachers to put their heads together in order to work for the benefit of their students. #nhcschathttps://t.co/qkDdDeBYVT
A8: Now we are speaking my language!! With an effect size of +1.57, collective teacher efficacy can be increased by teachers gaining knowledge and confidence in the abilities of their peers. Intentionally share successes and best practices! #NHCSchat@john_hattie
A7: We also need to show BTs that we appreciate them! Nice treats or notes at stressful times in the year can help. Programs like #RookieoftheYear and Promise of Leadership at #UNCW show BTs that the profession values them #nhcschat
A7 Teaching is a craft. Most craftsman have apprenticeships that last years. Remember that. You are learning your craft. We all don’t have to do everything the exact same way. Take what you like. Reshape it. Make it your own Trust the process of becoming. #NHCSchat
Q8: Hattie states that the biggest barrier to Ss achievement is teacher variability. The way to reduce teacher variability and increase collective teacher efficacy is through collaboration between the Ts school leaders, other adults in the schools and the Ss. #nhcschat
A8: Be open to change and new things. Understand that reflecting on practices does not mean you are a bad teacher. We all have room for improvement and we are all on the same team. #nhcschat
A8: BTs and Veteran teachers can come together with a shared vision of success and a plan of how to make it happen! Work together for the success of ALL students by setting goals for that plan and monitoring progress. Collaboration is key! #NHCSchat
A8: Idea: Having a BT and a veteran teacher share something they are doing in their classrooms during a faculty, grade level or department meeting. #NHCSchat
A8: Veteran and BT's should be planning together. @mswiggs_ and I plan every Thursday for an hour. My experience and her new fresh ideas mashed together create excellent opportunities for our students. #NHCSchat
A8: Collaborative planning is a great way to increase student achievement. My grade level is made of four beginning teachers and one veteran. We plan together almost weekly. Even just a quick hallway meeting in the afternoon can help. #NHCSchat
Q8: ALL teachers need to model confidence in themselves and their students. They need to be intentional about the language they use to talk about what CAN be done in the name of student achievement and school improvement! WE CAN! #togetherweshine#NHCSchat
A8: Research (my own 😉) shows that working with BTs rejuvenates veterans & the relationship is symbiotic. Veterans learn just as much if not more than BTs. I meet weekly with @misskatyleo7 and I have learned so much in Year 10 from her #nhcschat

I eat dinner every week with my mentors from when I first started teaching. 3 are retired and 1 is retiring this year. I would not have survived if it weren't for them #nhcschat
A8: Having mutual respect is the basis for those positive relationships- we all have something to offer- Kids benefit from our collective efforts- I like that both BT’s and Vets feel what they bring to the table is valued @AndersonElem#nhcsCHAT
@FHGES, we have a "staff shout-out" slide that starts every faculty meeting & showcases achievements of our faculty/staff.
We also have the "Molly-Go-Round Award" which is a stuffed animal Mustang we pass around, nominating a fellow co-worker for being a great leader. #nhcschat
A9 Showcase what you value. #NHCSchat is a great way for me to follow classroom & school accomplishments. It isn't bragging if it's true! Several teachers & admins self market & develop their brands this way. #nobragjustfact
A9: Our staff does a great job of showcasing within our grade level as well as staff members have an opportunity to speak and share at staff meetings. We also give out staff Top Tigers for all to hear during announcements! #NHCSChat#pvttchat
Q9: At our school, we showcase all of the accomplishments that our Ts are doing at our staff meetings. We have a celebrations slide that our admin uses in order to celebrate all of the accomplishments, no matter the size. #nhcschat
A9: Love the NHCS Emerging Leader program, UNCW's Promise of Leadership Award for BTs, and our Teacher & Rookie of the Year #NHCSChat@somerstahl@jenniferlhatch
A9: @newhanoverhs has started 5 new PLCs this year where teachers across subjects/experience levels can come together to share ideas, experiences, & questions. This allows BTs & veterans to showcase what's happening in their classrooms & it’s helping to build community. #NHCSchat
#NHCSchat A8: Grade level meetings have been my life line over the past 8 years. Meeting with my team to discuss instruction and analyze standards are key. Completing the new NC ELA standards modules have been super helpful for our team and will be important for BTs.
When you collaborate, it blows the students' minds! I remember working math concepts that some students were struggling with into ELA lessons. There were groans...and growth!! #NHCSchat

A9: Our PR teacher does a great job of showcasing all of the great things the Ts are doing in our building! Shout out to Caress Clegg for her hard work!
@tesschanel#nhcschat#nhcsbt@HoggardHS
A9: @AldermanEagles love to celebrate our #soaringeagles by sharing good news on twitter, at our monthly staff meetings, and by recognizing our soaring eagle staff members daily during morning announcements. #NHCSchat
A9: Rookie of the Year is one of my favorite things we are doing in #NHCSChat. Its a great opportunity to see the wonderful things happening in classrooms!
A9: #traskmiddle has One in a Minion. Teachers can recognize other faculty members by filling out a minion paper. The paper is read aloud at staff meetings or a flipgrid is shared with the staff. You also get a goody bag. #NHCSchat
A9:
Find out who your school/department PR Coordinator is, make sure you share with them! They are looking to showcase students AND TEACHERS!

The history teacher on my team steals my vocab lists to use in his lessons and the exposure has been awesome! The kids groan, but get so much out of it. #NHCSchat

A8: BTs need to be paired/teamed w/ a model teacher. Again, teaching is a craft. Partner them w/ an apprentice aka model teacher. Same team, same kids, same problem solving, same magic. BTs are often paired with someone they can’t see enough. Model. Model. Model. #NHCSchat
A9: Our principal @KristaCHolland1 is awesome about sharing the awesomethings going on @AndersonElem on Twitter! It makes us feel appreciated and noticed! #NHCSchat
A9: Also, the Promise of Leadership award from #UNCW is awesome for BTs. It's been nice meeting each month together! Can't wait to present with @misskatyleo7 and @BHunt4thgrade and everyone else next week! 😊 #NHCSchat
A10: Just because the end of the year is in sight, it's not too late to try something new! In fact, it will probably make these final months more enjoyable #nhcschat
Q10: Support each other through these final weeks to have a strong finish and keep your morale up with your staff. Be strategic in your planning of lessons for test prep, and keep the energy and engagement up! #nhcschat
Q10: I love the strategy involved in the last nine weeks. The skillful attempt to finish the race strong. The last grading period is also my favorite time to try new things...to collaborate w/teachers & admin to begin the amazing that will come in the next school year! #NHCSchat
A10: Uplifting one another and asking if you can help in anyway. The EOY can be overwhelming with testing, finishing any paperwork on students as well as ensuring students are prepared for the next grade. #NHCSChat
A10: Leaders, inspire your staff to sincerely recommit to the vision and goals! What will each staff member do to strengthen their focus and contribution to positive outcomes? #NHCSchat
A9: Staff Shout Outs power point at every staff meeting, Principally Speaking blog, Awesome Admiral Staff Member trophies, and you never know when there will be a ransom raffle, which is usually tied to something PD related! #nhcsCHAT
A10: All stakeholders can collaborate to ensure a strong finish by working on long-range plans & pacing to get the most of out every minute we have with Ss. Encouraging one another & encouraging students helps to keep everyone progressing and positive till the end. #NHCSchat
A10: Support each other! The last couple of months are tough, especially as testing approaches, but finding ways to encourage each other in & outside of the classroom makes such a difference. Embrace laughter, look for small (& big) wins, recognize each other’s efforts. #NHCSchat
A10: keep planning collaborative and fun lessons to avoid burnout. Pull small groups as much as possible. @tarheelscpl holds weekly Instructional Team meetings to go over lessons with coaches and admin team. #NHCSchat
#NHCSchat A9: Our administrator @WartelCindy fosters leadership within our building. She creates opportunities for all teachers to share topics they are passionate about in PD.

A9: @AndersonElem celebrates Ts with staff shout outs, awesome admiral stickers and awesome admiral trophy given to Ts by Ts. Our admin @KristaCHolland1 gives encouragement through hand written notes, tweets and announcements 👍🏻 #NHCSChat
A10: "Just keep swimming..." 4th Quarter is a hard time to stay focused, but surround yourself with positive people, take it one week at a time, and start your countdown... only 42 days left?! #nhcschat
A9: @AndersonElem I nominate Ts for awards and recognition from UNCW, within the district or community at large! I want others to know how awesome our Ts are! #nhcsCHAT
A10: Although it’s tempting to count the days, DON’T!! Look for ways to impact students. Make your classroom a place they still want to come to each day! And as @JessicaDScharff said, try a new tech tool!! #NHCSChat
A10: Look at what fun end of the year activities Ts use to ease stress levels & create a sense of community in their classrooms. Go outside and play games that review content - that's always refreshing! #NHCSchat
A9. Our intern from @UNCWWatsonEd has been included in our staff video and has been supported by and collaborated across all disciplines while practicing the art of teaching and sharing his ideas. Support begins early... #NHCSchat
Thanks for the love and shout outs tonight @cricketlea and @lbcasas33! Always good to know your work is appreciated by your peers and colleagues.

A10 Make it count! Reinforce growth mindset. Take daily steps toward weekly, monthly, & final goals. Celebrate & support Ts AND learners. Remind folks that we are changing the world. Because. We. Are. #NHCSchat
#NHCSchat A10: Take time for yourself and do something fun! It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the testing and you don't want to create a stressful environment for your students. Go for a walk, take a yoga class, read a good book.
