A1: I don't have a classroom, but do lots of push-in interventions. My greeting of all Ss (greeting R more important than we realize!), planning/preparedness of my lesson, interactions w/ & believing in all Ss impacts cultural tone. #BookCampPD

A2: Collaboration is a very normal part of our classroom. Students collaborate on G Suite products, peer feedback, and hands on activities. Collaboration and communication are life skills. The students need to know how to utilize each of these to a certain extent. #bookcamppd

  • emilyfranESL Jun 23 @ 9:16 AM EDT
A2: Collaborative learning requires lots of preplanning in order to be effective! I provided plenty of opportunities for collaboration and peer support #bookcamppd
  • susankotch Jun 23 @ 9:17 AM EDT
A2 - I do a lot of matching activities - index cards that contain Qs and As, or Words and Definitions, etc. Each student gets one and they walk around the room seeking out the partner card. Makes them engage with each other, talk, get into small groups... #bookcamppd
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jun 23 @ 9:17 AM EDT
You certainly are preparing them for the future that lies ahead of them! #BookCampPD

A1b: Increased inclusivity this yr by using my Spanish-speaking skills to use (been taking classes 2 yrs). When new S came to our schl who was just learning Eng, I did SEL centers all in Spanish w/our bilingual Ss. SO much reciprocal learning & relationship building! #bookcamppd

A2 Also, students sit in groups which allows them to collaborate on activities such as sorting 7 synonyms for "happy" from strongest to weakest meaning. Makes them discuss, work out discrepancies, come to agreement. We love to explore words. #bookcamppd

Envision collaborative practice in learning centers. Each center a different lens (Writing: read aloud, author, craft, idea study; Content: observation, primary sources, big idea) #BookCampPD

I have them do a lot of self-assessment of their own writing. A series of Qs guides them. They highlight and annotate their papers showing me where they did or did not include a skill (grammar, transitions, dialogue, etc). They share their work with others. #bookcamppd
  • JulieGB7 Jun 23 @ 9:23 AM EDT
A2: some of our collab. learn took place w/real-time practice. For SEL, share materials/ask politely, say thank u, fill buckets by complimenting, stop&reteach/prob solve if prob arises. collab. across settings&cross-curricularly helps reinforce carryover of skills! #BookCampPD
  • pattyvreilly Jun 23 @ 9:23 AM EDT
I truly believe that collaborative structures harness the strengths of all of our students. I use writing centers to launch each new writing unit of study, and use the same four types of centers over and over #BookCampPD #SSLearners
  • mjjohnson1216 - Moderator Jun 23 @ 9:24 AM EDT
Absolutely! The power of 'we' is terrific #BookCampPD

A4: my favorite strategy was being mindful when making anchor charts! Love the no more than 4 points in each chart #BookCampPD https://t.co/UaPmclq0jd
    • emilyfranESL Jun 18 @ 7:51 PM EDT
Rethinking anchor charts: These anchor charts have too much information! “Struggling learners can be easily overstimulated with visuals, verbal, and tactile information” #SupportingStrugglingLearners
