SUPER Busy. First day of full class schedule is tomorrow. Today was a mini schedule and Academic Lab time to get back in the swing of things. #idedchat
hi @averyteach and #idedchat folks! I'm Sara, a Kindergarten teacher at Lake Tahoe, NV. I have 1 more week of summer then our week of PD starts. :) I'm excited to get back to it.
A1 I think they are dependent on each other. For littles, a strong and caring classroom community is part of the culture you develop together all year long. #idedchat
A1: In a classroom that has a culture of "Community" - one in which every feels safe - classroom management becomes "natural" rather than forced. #IDedchat
a strong culture can drive the classroom management. The more the Ss feel part of the culture the better! I love letting Ss come up with classroom policies-they drive the culture too!! #IDedchat
I think that where the T places the focus is important though. If they look at management can make the room more “top-down” approach. If the focus is on culture, it is a “bottom-up” approach. Is it teacher controlled or student controlled? #IDedchat
As @casas_jimmy says - we need to be sure we are being the "champion for kids" - that will come out in our culture and speak through our management! #IDedchat
Ultimately I think it needs to be a mixture of both and meet in the middle. Obviously there are things that you would like to focus on, same for students. #idedchat
A2: When you have a positive culture, students WANT to be in your classroom and therefore are invested in the learning process since you are. #idedchat
A2: We need to ensure we have a "culture of hope" - a place where students know that gain can gain confidence and have the possibilities for success! #IDedchat
Absolutely - it also goes back to the "old" saying - our students won't care how much we know until they know how much we care. THEN they will learn. #IDedchat
R2: if you have a focus on management, I believe it creates more of the “sit n git” style of learning. Cultural focus is establishing boundaries, but allowing Ss to challenge and push up to those boundaries. Challenging norms. 4C mentality #IDedchat
A2 Student learning happens when students feel welcomed and loved based on the routines and rituals of their classroom. Which are parts of the culture and include predictable and consistent management. #idedchat
A great website that explains why CULTURE is important to learning is Conscious Discipline (from Becky Bailey's work): https://t.co/hMSAuVu3yM#IDedchat
R2: we must have the bait to get the students hooked. We create this through the culture in the room. How engaged are we in the content? Is it exciting? Is it a lecture? Is it a lab? Is it a #PBL? Am I bought into this? #IDedchat
R3: Students collaborating, being creative, having discussions, and challenging each other. Respect between Ss and between Ss and Ts. Learning taking place by all stakeholders. Risk of FAILure out the window. Flexible seating. Freedom to explore and learn #IDedchat
Q3: Ownership, responsibility, respect and consistency. When you are your authentic self, it encourages students to find their voice and be themselves. #idedchat
A3: If you can't tell, I recently read #culturize Champion for kids; Expect Excellence; Carry the banner; Be a merchant of hope (a teacher who has a healthy culture has these characteristics). #IDedchat
A4: I be sure to put myself out there before the students. No use having them share with a stranger. Helps relax the class and show I'm human and want them to know more about me. #Idedchat
R4: get to know Ss, share experiences, learn Ss names, work with Ss individually/small groups. Talk with Ss about other things than school. Tell Ss what they CAN do, not what they CANT do. #idedchat
I appreciate your phrase "your authentic self" I remember when I first started teaching, I was afraid to let students know the real me - what a difference it made when I got over that! #IDedchat
A4: Set the tone for the culture on day one! I always acknowledge to Ss when they come in--it's ok to be a little nervous-but I promise you will love it here!! Empathy Rules! #idedchat
Culture is build on more than just T and S relationships. I find the most important area is building S to S relationships....without it there really can not be a culture of shared learning...which is my goal. #Idedchat
Q5: I let Ss have a voice in the procedures. I also love classroom shared responsibilities. Getting Ss involved makes them feel part of the culture of the community! #idedchat
Nope! Not bad at all. I remember a time when I was walking backwards while explaining something, walked out of my shoes, fell backward, and popped back up without losing a beat. THen..we all laughed. :-) #IDedchat
R5: You NEVER finish teaching culture in a classroom. You are always showing Ss how to be respectful of their peers and of their teacher. You model daily. #IDedchat

I give Ss 3 Pillars of which to build procedures-Respect, Reasonable, Responsible. Then we have categories of procedures-in class, in school, with each other. Then that drives their ideas. It is always fun to see what they come up with #Idedchat
A6: Have students come up with what the expectations will look like - like with @jeng_nearpod 's "pillars" - students decide what those words mean. #IDedchat
I really try to focus exclusively on the behaviors that I want to see and not on those that we don’t care to see. My school awards students “Bears is the Month”. Focus on improved behavior, academic excellence, improved academics, leadership and service @LCHSBears#IDedchat
Q6: when setting the stage for new year-new procedures- I say to Ss "is this a fair/reasonable procedure we can all follow?" A unanimous yes is the hope-but I stay open to discussion. We don't have to always agree. Justify your disagreement, and we will revisit. #idedchat

R6: when the Ts allow Ss to b flexible, talk, and take risks, this allows Ss to help establish the culture. It is a subtle relinquish of control. #IDedchat
It's always an investment that pays dividends. Bc Ss will invariably misstep-we all do as humans. It gives Ts the ability to remind Ss this was a procedure they agreed was fair! #idedchat
A7: Establish relationship; get to know your students in order to meet their needs; give them a voice in their learning; expect excellence and give them the support they need to meet it. #IDedchat
A7: I will never forget my year one advice. "You can be nice in November". Geez I thought! I didn't want that culture of fear in my classroom #idedchat . Give yourself and your Ss grace-every year the culture will be different. Learn and pivot as you need to! #idedchat
R7: establish your expectations and allow Ss to initiate. Remember that you will have speed bumps. Praise Ss for doing a good job. Talk with Ss about changing attitudes and mindsets. It’s not going to be perfect and the work will never end. Be consistent. #IDedchat
A7: part two: be at the door every morning, even when you don't feel like it...Smile and be happy to greet your Ss. It makes all the difference in the world...a small gesture with big results! #idedchat
I’m nice day 1. When you have a culture like this, it creates resentment and negates any positives that have happened in the school or class prior to this. #IDedchat
