Q1:What do you want to STOP in education? (and Why)
-
Matt Dale, PVHS. I want to help awaken at least 5 students who have given up hope to the possibilities of their life
-
My goal is to help more Ts
-
-
A1: I want teachers to stop using reading logs. They don't create lifelong readers who read for enjoyment.
-
A1: Stop (or at least reduce) distraction and down time in classrooms. Get Ts to see productive/effective use of tech in class
-
A1: I want to stop pretending that standardization and gentle reforms will get the amazing student outcomes that are possible
-
A1:I want to stop the negativity I hear about Ss, let's think about how to help them and address the issue that is causing this
-
A0: Shane, Asst. Dir of Tech with , I want to start subbing, and maybe get a IT club going?
-
A0: Amanda. Math Instructional Coach. My goal is to do something for me everyday/take care of myself so I don't burn myself out
-
Q0: hi! My name is Trevor Rawlings, Ela teacher at Pinacate middle. My goal: foster growth mindset and communal equity for Ss
-
ohhhh, good one,
easy to complain but let's make the conversation productive - search for solutions
-
Gonna argue. I use them as analysis tools AND kids get to pick what books they want to read.
-
-
Let's start one We're ready. https://t.co/fVYfC6kjVb
-
-
A0: Shane, Asst. Dir of Tech with , I want to start subbing, and maybe get a IT club going?
-
a1: I would like to stop packing classrooms full of kids. Trying to teach the Language Arts to 165 students is too much.
-
a1: Stop keeping teachers constantly busy. I need time to have long, thoughtful conversations with my colleagues.
-
A1 stop the treatment of Ss as just a grade. They are people with real feelings and should be accepted for who they are
-
-
Yeah, It just annoys me when I hear all the bad stuff. All kids bring something to the table. Lets see them this way
-
A1: I want to stop judging a student's intelligence off of their performance on a multiple choice test.
-
A1(why): we have the possibility of really individualizing ed, yet don't use our human/tech/community resources to their capacity
-
-
A1Stop blaming the kids when they are not at the level we expect We need to move kids from their current reality to higher levels
-
A1- I want the "us" vs "them" mentality to disappear. We are all here 2 guide better humans 4 a better world. We need to b a team
-
totally agree with this -
number one cost of every teacher is time, gotta give along with the take
-
Q1b: Describe a smaller goal that would help STOP your response for Q1.
-
A1: I would like to stop seeing so much sage on the stage and see more personalized, engaging teaching and learning.
-
A1b: I'd like to have more Ts see what it is like to be a disadvantaged student without resources at home to get HW done.
-
Absolutely, I really believe in this as well.
-
Yes! If we can talk about students positively, we can help them to see themselves positively and act + https://t.co/cDgKM7pWP9
-
-
A1:I want to stop the negativity I hear about Ss, let's think about how to help them and address the issue that is causing this
-
A1: Id like if standardized testing ended and we moved towards performance based assessments
-
A1b: Ts should get Ss voices in assignments. Ts should ask Ss what they get out of reading logs. Is this learning or compliance?
-
A1b- as a TOA I am constantly trying to reinforce the fact I am here for Ts and Ss and I value feedback & contact
-
A1b: Project based assessments take more prep work but show more about a student than multiple choice tests.
-
Excellent choice. Anyone can grow.
https://t.co/46oqssW0mF
-
-
A1Stop blaming the kids when they are not at the level we expect We need to move kids from their current reality to higher levels
-
A1: don't want to stop anything so much as keep moving on with Ss and Ts-collaboration that is real, not going through the motions
-
I hate hearing the S bashing. They r learning! They don't know what they don't know. We r Ts of Ss not our content
-
A1: less standardizing and more personalizing
-
A1: I’d like to stop relying on textbook publishers. I know open education resources () are hard to do, but it’s worth doing.
-
A1b: have Ts focus on a Ss talents and utilize that strength to help them grow in other areas
-
YES! Stop the negativity and believe in our kids. All of them!
-
I am still waiting for our new curriculum to arrive so I am relying on other resources & I kinda like it :-)
-
-
A1b: teachers willing to customize their class for students with diff interests/needs/values. Diff projects, assessments, etc.
-
A1B:To take negative comments T's make and turn into questions that can lead to answers to the problem a Ss is having
-
Q2: What do you want REROUTE or tweak in education?
-
a2: I would like to reroute the length of periods. Fifty minutes is not enough. Not for content or relationships.
-
A1b: be more consistent with calendar (in order to balance)
& journal about Ts I've had convos w/.
"Who do I help grow this wk?"
-
A2: I hope the tide is turning with the crazy reactions and interpretations to achievement data/test scores.
-
A2: I hope we are beyond cleaning up "eraser marks" and purely teaching to the test, and can focus more on long term outcomes.
-
If your admin is on board this is an amazing goal. Ss come to Ts on diff levels, seeing growth on any level is huge@GrantBennett11
-
A1b: We could stop forcing the use of “approved” resources, let good teachers explore and use what fits for them?
-
A2 I want to see a higher level of student engagement so their learning is meaningful.
-
A1 Id like to stop having to get a committee vote to introduce new novels. If state dept of Ed approves, what's the prob?
-
A1b: I think the effective use of technology like the program personalizes learning.
-
A1b: lower class sizes will allow teachers more opportunity to personalize learning
-
Hi Kathy is now checking in a bit late (I’m grading book trailer videos)
-
A1: One size fits all assessments. Our assessment methods should vary so that all types of Ss can show mastery of standards.
-
A1b: I am inviting Ts to my room, got a couple takers
-
Q2: Ts as coaches & advisors rather than deliverers of content
-
this is a tough one,
I'm not saying I'm for or against, but more curious as to what u imagine 4 Performance Based
-
-
A2:We need to REROUTE how we look at homework and assignments. We need something that get's them thinking and applying new things
-
A2: I'd like to see more Ts putting relationships first before they start teaching content. Ss learn from Ts they know care.
-
A2- I would like to see more Maker time, genius hours, play time and creativity encouraged and more music and language courses.
-
A2: I like our Ss show off their talents more by Ts providing more opportunities for showcasing. I love the idea of portfolios
-
A1: I want to stop fixed mindset and encourage growth mindset
-
A2: Give our Ss a voice and make them active participants in their education.
-
I've tried this. No takers. Heartbreaking that Ts don't care about other classrooms.
-
what do u do to get feedback?
I've been thinking about this for myself I do it for workshops, but not day to day.
-
I started my education career at a No homework, 8 hr, project based sch- lots of work but amazing results.
-
Q2b: What speedbumps do you anticipate in trying to reroute what you responded with in A2?
-
Sounds cool and thanks for joining us
-
A2b: A speed bump in turning the tide on reactions to achievement to test scores can be ourselves. People don't like change.
-
A2: I want to see Ss have authentic audiences, present their work to others not just Ts or staff members
-
It's an idea I adapted from . I love this project. Ss use to show understanding of reading text
-
A2: change school hours, make safe spaces for learning and exploration available later in the evenings.
-
But I do believe Ss needed more exposure to math and reading outside of the classroom as well.
-
A2b:Not wanting to think outside of the box = resistance.
-
A2 We need to stop using district benchmarks! Doesn't meet Ss where they are and enforces 1 size fits all.
-
A2: I'd like to see more positive talk about Ss rather than negative talk. Brag about our Ss not bag on them
-
A2B:My colleagues might disagree with me on what I think would work vs what they have used in the past and worked.
-
I would love to see sch go to a 4/10 schedule. I have yet 2 meet a T or S who isn't recharged after 3 days off
-
-
keep trying, I feel you, want others to get on board w/blogging and all sooo busy https://t.co/HqgPgm3Vxv
-
-
I've tried this. No takers. Heartbreaking that Ts don't care about other classrooms.
-
A2: roadblocks:those who marginalize student voice, student learned helplessness, adults who prefer the ease of one size fits all
-
. Yes. Before school and after school hours. Our campuses need to be learning incubators. Not just during the day.
-
-
A2b: Ts that have stopped caring about Ss are the biggest speed bumps to creating a culture of care. Some people just gotta go.
-
+1k If they are lacking they need encouragement to improve not slamming/shaming https://t.co/dalT4G0rAf
-
-
A2: I'd like to see more positive talk about Ss rather than negative talk. Brag about our Ss not bag on them
-
A2b Same old same old at higher levels. Admin out of touch with what is really happening in classrooms.
-
A2b: some speed bumps are Ts changing their attitudes on talking about Ss
-
A2: I'd like to reroute how Ts get information with large group memos / etc.
Needs more curating and organizing.
-
A2: we need to give our SPED population more opportunities to grow and be successful instead of forcing them into A-G courses.
-
A2: Echoing 's thoughts on textbooks. Go open! I see way too many unused textbooks and $ that could be better spent.
-
THAT SOUNDS AWESOME.
for science? or another class?
-
Q3: What do you want to continue doing FULL SPEED AHEAD in education?
-
A2b: it is more time consuming to plan projects/activities and make connections outside of the classroom
-
A2: giving students more time to analyze how they've learned, not what they've learned.
-
This goes for our Ts as well. Our expectations on our school staff-from top to bottom, influence everything
-
I like this! School campuses should be open more often!
-
I think Ts need a reminder of why they got into teaching in the 1st place. Again https://t.co/xojHXCwsqB
-
-
A2b: Ts that have stopped caring about Ss are the biggest speed bumps to creating a culture of care. Some people just gotta go.
-
a2b: fear of change, who will supervise? how will we fund? what if something goes wrong? we’ve never done that before.
-
A3: Full speed ahead on building teacher and classified educator leadership.
-
A3 I want to continue to have high expectations for students. They can achieve at high levels if we believe in them.
-
You KNOW I am a science T! SO yes for Science
-
A2 Too many staff meetings taking away time from collab with colleagues so we can really focus on Ss.
-
A2b: Biggest textbook speed bump is changing mindset. I believe we can do it though!
-
A3: Using the 1:1 movement to make Ss & Ts as responsible for their own learning and PD as possible. .
-
a3: I would like to continue making school a place students want to come to because of relationships and learning.
-
A3: continue working with Ts to create meaningful experiences for Ss
-
A3: full speed on project based learning. The masterpieces our Ss are capable of will shock even the biggest doubter
-
I completely agree with you on this
-
A2b: student investment/pushback, getting other Ts to implement common strategies and have common goals for Ss
-
-
A3: Continue educating our Ss with skills for the future. Tech is not the problem or solution but it's function should be taught.
-
assessments that r less concerned with regurgitated content and focus on Ss being able to communicate fact based opin
-
A1: Full speed ahead conversations asking ourselves what we can do better & loving our students
-
Q3b: What is need to maintain momentum for this full speed ahead goal?
-
A3- I want to continue finding ways to mentor and coach Ts so they can stay positive in their interactions w/Ss
-
I would still say don't go into these w/o structure. Not just free play.
That said, YES to building creativity.
-
too right! They need all kinds of skills, soft skills, academic skills and tech skills.
-
A3:If you are uncomfortable thinking outside the box, stretch the box to fit the needs of our Ss.Working together for Ss success,
-
A3b: Teacher and classified educator leadership is dependant on people be in charge of their own PD.
-
A3: I'm going full speed ahead with a classified educators initiative, involving them in student centered projects.
-
-
A3b: Stop blaming Youtube for why your Ss aren't learning. You're the teacher, manage YOUR class.
-
A3: full speed ahead on building community and relationships with Ss and their parents
-
A3: Full speed ahead w/learning, teaching, sharing tech/best practices of all kinds
-
A3- this goal is harder at times because the help I give Ts tends to be unofficial in the district.
-
Yes! Yes! Yes! +1 million https://t.co/nHOU7nk9yg
-
-
A3: Using the 1:1 movement to make Ss & Ts as responsible for their own learning and PD as possible. .
-
A3: Continue focus on caring about students. We have great educators (Ts, staff & admin) who care deeply.
-
A3b: a belief in the arts and in our Ss. Also a belief in stepping away from multiple choice to assess learning
-
A3:
Full Speed ahead on for and using
-
There is, it is called comfort level - everyone wants to stay in their own lane, not necessarily the carpool lane
-
A3b- I need to ensure I am communicating my availability & desire to help the Ts
-
A3 Full speed ahead with caution. Never want Ed to be the way we've always done it. And nothing seems perfect enough not to adjust
-
A3b: We need to maintain the resources and training that make the 1:1 movement a success. So far, thumbs up to
-
A3B: Ts to get more creative at what they are doing, they can do it but it requires a little work and thinking outside the box.
-
A3b: continued support from and the amazing team I am fortunate to be a part of
-
Any final thoughts on (topic) ?
-
A3b: To maintain momentum I will need the help of our TOSA's and of course our new Supt
-
I'm in have been working on this, cannot bury head in the sand https://t.co/DCme64udSW
-
-
A3:
Full Speed ahead on for and using
-
A3b: district & admin support environments that encourage curiosity, creativity, and well-intended risk taking of Ts and Ss.
-
A3b: We're trying to build self-sustainability by having student leadership teach many of the lessons to frosh
-
I am always looking for someone to drive w/just 2 use the carpool lane ;-)
-
Any final thoughts on tonight's topic?
-
Final Thoughts on : Happy to see the participation in tonight's chat.
-
This is an incredible idea! Could work with Link Crew our Freshman academy training. https://t.co/V2fWiIribM
-
-
A3b: We're trying to build self-sustainability by having student leadership teach many of the lessons to frosh
-
FT: We needed an hour tonight, glad to see so many, thanks for great chat/resources all
-
FT:
Progress doesn't always mean more, sometimes we need to look at what to drop or what to change, not just what to add.
-
Ft: negativity has no place in education. We need to treat our Ss with respect and help them reach their full potential
-
This is an incredibly positive statement!
-
We don't have to do things just because that is what we have always done.
-
FT If we are to grow as Ts and help our Ss grow, the have to stop only training admin and dept chairs on what works.
-
These convos are encouraging. Want to see great ideas of innovators manifest.
-
A3: fullspeedahead on building meaningful personal relationships with Ss, especially those who may be harder to build one with
-
FT: Good topic tonight. We need to purposefully embrace abandoning practices and programs that don't serve Ss.
-
we are lucky to have Link Crew leaders as TAs in our frosh classrooms, they will be our key players.
