We're happy to have Marvin in the H-O-U-S-E!
Q1 in one minute...
for "Culture of Learning"
Erin. greetings! It's also our last week. Exams are tomorrow!
Q1 - What might your Learners say they need for a more effective Culture of Learning?
Thrilled to share with you tonight, Irene!
A1–I'm guessing they'd wish for more choices/variation 'on the menu' and more time to work together.
A1 - We find that our Learners want to ask more of the questions and facilitate more of our Learning. Asking brings about Learning!
Greg, are you really in tonight?
A1: Learners need to be heard, to have a voice, to be appreciated, to have buy in. insists on autonomy & competance too
BAM!! https://t.co/AgFuD0hmXI
A1: Learners need to be heard, to have a voice, to be appreciated, to have buy in. insists on autonomy & competance too
Hi! Helen from Houston popping in!
A1 - (continued) This is a really good question. Thanks for making me think (and admit my answer 'out loud')
A1: voice and choice in their learning - breaks and fun/play.
Helen, we have been waiting for you!
A1: Ss say they actually want classroom management and Ts to be in control of the classroom. They want to learn!
A1: I have not done a good enough job cultivating a room of inquiry and joy of asking questions. That is needed too. #
Smiling... https://t.co/uvwUlmc01Q
A1 - (continued) This is a really good question. Thanks for making me think (and admit my answer 'out loud')
A1 My Ss would say they need more time with Ts who actually care about their goals, abilities, and passions.
A1 definitely choices of ways to show their understanding
Let's all welcome Lisa {} to tonight!
Lisa, so nice to connect with you!
A1 they want specific feedback
Aw Rik, you know just what to say!
A1-In group work Ss want to be challenged. This means equal pairings of abilities when setting up groups.
Time is huge! Wish I would have said that. Way to steal the great answer from the back of my head. HA https://t.co/5mnHgzamp1
A1 My Ss would say they need more time with Ts who actually care about their goals, abilities, and passions.
I cherish this Crew! I'm a more effective educator due to this Crew!
glad to stumble upon thanks for welcoming me!
A1 I am hoping they don't need as much as they want more of creativity, collaboration, choice, challenge, controversy, &connections
Wanting to learn... What a thought! https://t.co/qhUVy6nl6R
A1: Ss say they actually want classroom management and Ts to be in control of the classroom. They want to learn!
So HUGE!!! https://t.co/o1v22SuZnG
A1 My Ss would say they need more time with Ts who actually care about their goals, abilities, and passions.
A true culture of learning begins w/trust & that's created by showing our Ss that we CARE about them
Sailing the 7 C's...? https://t.co/mRCA6MmroU
A1 I am hoping they don't need as much as they want more of creativity, collaboration, choice, challenge, controversy, &connections
Being a facilitator of inquiry empowers & inspires students. https://t.co/eNmkNVYMTz
A1 - We find that our Learners want to ask more of the questions and facilitate more of our Learning. Asking brings about Learning!
Hi Lisa! I'm from Pittsburgh. Go Pens!
Ongoing DAILY.... https://t.co/Hd91X840cY
A true culture of learning begins w/trust & that's created by showing our Ss that we CARE about them
Speechless... https://t.co/DdbGvlQxRW
Being a facilitator of inquiry empowers & inspires students. https://t.co/eNmkNVYMTz
A1 - We find that our Learners want to ask more of the questions and facilitate more of our Learning. Asking brings about Learning!
Q2 in one minute...
for "Culture of Learning"
#up Lisa here second time for a live chat
We are excited to have you here!
A culture of learning supports both students and their families!
Q2 - Describe the impact more one-on-one or F2F time could have on your Culture of Learning.
All the Staff, Community and MORALE... https://t.co/W2tLcWK5mT
A culture of learning supports both students and their families!
A2 - More Face to Face time would allow for more personalized instruction for kids.
A2 – More individual attention can definitely help enhance the relationships, which should in turn enhance the learning.
A2 - When we design our Collaborative Learning to maximize F2F time and one-on-one engagement, learning ignites!
What do we mean by "culture"?
So important when we to our Learners... https://t.co/1A3P3UaRpC
A2 - More Face to Face time would allow for more personalized instruction for kids.
1:1 = rapport building = trust = increased willingness to take risks = learning!
A2: Great question! Personalizes the learning experience for all involved. Deepens the learning. More depth not breadth.
A2 more 1/1 f2f allows me to get to know my Ss better, their strengths, weaknesses, ideas, thoughts, passions
A2 it's personalized and tailored to the individual needs of the student
A2 - Our Learners often request to learn collaboratively with their peers giving me time to circulate to each and every Learner!
A2: F2F Facilitates differentiation, builds culture, shows learners we care, & accurately & specifically assesses learner needs
Chris, I'd say our Culture starts with respect, trust, listening...
A2: opportunities to build + make the team feel their voices are heard/empower them to act as a community towards goals.
A2: tech is great for building relationships beyond the classroom, but nothing replaces F2F time to really get to know our Ss
A2 Ss need that one on one time. They feel special, valued. I love it too! The shy Ss actually talk to me!
Depth is vital for retention... https://t.co/Tqcnqz8hWO
A2: Great question! Personalizes the learning experience for all involved. Deepens the learning. More depth not breadth.
Great statement! I am a believer in 1 to 1 and small group. It builds relationships
Summer schedule means coming to late. Ryan in Flint joining the party.
A2: Imagine- One lead teacher for every five teachers. One administrative assistant to help with paperwork for every two Ts.
Just imagine what is possible when Educators and Learners get to know each other... https://t.co/NhjDxT3HZj
A2 more 1/1 f2f allows me to get to know my Ss better, their strengths, weaknesses, ideas, thoughts, passions
Lisa, F2F makes significant contributions on all fronts...
But what is "culture"? Where does it exist and how do we experience it?
Accuracy is so important... https://t.co/EdFmdWNAa6
A2: F2F Facilitates differentiation, builds culture, shows learners we care, & accurately & specifically assesses learner needs
A2: Relationships being built deeper in 1:1 interactions. Allows learning to become more personalized.
Imagine Learning Communities like this...? https://t.co/nwsPsAxv7w
A2: opportunities to build + make the team feel their voices are heard/empower them to act as a community towards goals.
The biggest criticism Ss have of Ts is: They don't teach us anything! Ss crave structure & stability. https://t.co/CehF380TvI
A1: Ss say they actually want classroom management and Ts to be in control of the classroom. They want to learn!
Feeling valued...what a thought! https://t.co/pWHfvrNs7m
A2 Ss need that one on one time. They feel special, valued. I love it too! The shy Ss actually talk to me!
and you get to know their likes and strengths
See a number of our peeps in tonite. Culture Of Learning I think. Well, we're all about expanding that.
- think about how much, as Ts, we value feeling valued - such a gift to give to our Ss as well
Ryan, we've been holding our breath for you...
Ss at a long-term sub job came to me on last day to thank me for bringing them the structure they wanted. I cried.
culture is the way things are done in a location, the habits, procedures and routine
Chris, I believe a Culture of Learning empowers great sharing, communication and collaboration. It must be built.
Q3 in one minute...
for "Culture of Learning"
:) will check out the great convo later
HUGE! https://t.co/83aocpBv5Y
A2: Relationships being built deeper in 1:1 interactions. Allows learning to become more personalized.
It was like that CO2 scene in Apollo XIII. You are all free to breathe again!
Stunned... https://t.co/DnZTVb0eNE
The biggest criticism Ss have of Ts is: They don't teach us anything! Ss crave structure & stability. https://t.co/CehF380TvI
A1: Ss say they actually want classroom management and Ts to be in control of the classroom. They want to learn!
This is amazing! https://t.co/0u2diTtUOK
Ss at a long-term sub job came to me on last day to thank me for bringing them the structure they wanted. I cried.
nope, you are here now you have to stay
Q3 - Share how empowering more Student Leadership in your Culture of Learning could set Learners up for greater success.
Sounds like it's intangible... hard to bottle up. But here we are trying to control it.
Thank you Paul. You tell her!
A3 - We find our Learners exhibit more confidence and polish their communication skills when they lead more of our Learning!
A3: by teaching them to lead, we prepare them to lead - model it in school, provide scaffolds/training wheels, they take them off
hard to define, easy to destroy, long & difficult road to develop
so it's behavior? Can learning happen in behavior? That sounds external to the learner.
It allows for students to become a part of the process.
A2 F2F personalizes learning and makes sure kids get what they need. Helps Ts keep a pulse on classroom
I would not say we try to control it, but foster a healthy Culture of Learning.
https://t.co/EGWm7YdaJi
To truly empower students means they will have more freedom and choice than they--and you--have been used to.
So far you are able to say what it does but not what it is.
A3: learners helping design rubrics & learning targets and self assessing shifts the focus from playing the game to actual learning
A3 - Many of our Learners request to facilitate our learning when they are unsure and have lots of questions that want answered.
A3 I like to give my Ss the chance to teach a lesson of their choice. It is so powerful!
Culture can be destroyer... can you give an example?
A3 - Allowing students to lead in the classroom. This can be instructional in flexible student grouping.
Empowering Ss with produce growth mindsets and motivation
Chris, our Culture of Learning is a safe environment when Learners feel free to learn and grow.
A3: When Ss have choice in their learning, they generally produce higher quality, deeper proof of knowledge. Relinquish control!
a good culture can be easily destroyed
also learners telling you what they need help with
A3 - Students as models in the classroom for instruction and setting and modeling expectations of learning.
A Pulse on Learning... https://t.co/lZTat7CBsT
A2 F2F personalizes learning and makes sure kids get what they need. Helps Ts keep a pulse on classroom
A3 - Students lead the way!
SO important! That shift from the game of learning to TRUE learning is essential https://t.co/oZQbv0ih8F
A3: learners helping design rubrics & learning targets and self assessing shifts the focus from playing the game to actual learning
A3: We have a student advisory board for our Minecraft Club. This translates to the classroom where Ss lead in the classroom.
So culture is external to the learner? An environment, somewhere out there?
This is where I want to learn and grow! https://t.co/bdBlVOHGkt
A3 I like to give my Ss the chance to teach a lesson of their choice. It is so powerful!
very important for an inclusive classroom students need to feel that they can be successful
Interesting idea!
https://t.co/9Dpf1OHMAT
A3 I like to give my Ss the chance to teach a lesson of their choice. It is so powerful!
A2 I feature 1on1 and face2face time in my classroom. It's how relationships are formed and built upon. Ss need more human contact
can u give an example of when a "good" culture can be destroyed? Can bad culture...?
A3 empowering Ss with produce growth mindsets and motivate Ss to take risks and challenges
I'd like Culture is the environment outside the Learner but based on the contribution and attitudes of Learners.
I also use this in teaching PBIS
A4 S leadership means Ts can do their jobs as facilitators of learning instead of dispensers of info
Empowering Leadership by our Learners... Huge! https://t.co/bclAZI9x6i
A3 - Allowing students to lead in the classroom. This can be instructional in flexible student grouping.
when you stop trusting people, when you cut their pay & have staff cuts year after year, cut programs...
I just expressed the same ideas, Kimberly! Great minds...
Please try this OFTEN... https://t.co/oLzcup73rJ
A2 I feature 1on1 and face2face time in my classroom. It's how relationships are formed and built upon. Ss need more human contact
so culture is completely at the whim of external forces?
Q4 in one minute...
for "Culture of Learning"
We grow when we take risks. https://t.co/Do8dZRUYBy
A3 empowering Ss with produce growth mindsets and motivate Ss to take risks and challenges
you asked for an example, that is jsut one
I like this comment I always feel the T should do less talking and the S more
Learners facilitating is so empowering... https://t.co/iQgiMiCxlf
A4 S leadership means Ts can do their jobs as facilitators of learning instead of dispensers of info
Q4 - Share how your Culture of Learning might be more effective with more control or collaboration in the hands of your Learners.
A4 - I need to stop being nervous about letting go. I need to let them explore/investigate/discover more. I bet they will amaze me.
A4 - When our Learners are in the Driver's Seat of our learning their engagement and retention increases.
it promotes engagement within a fun setting
Yes! That's the key to true student engagement. https://t.co/Rm3gnBLPBq
I like this comment I always feel the T should do less talking and the S more
Michelle, don't we love it when our Learners amaze us and themselves? https://t.co/QLdJnlA6jP
A4 - I need to stop being nervous about letting go. I need to let them explore/investigate/discover more. I bet they will amaze me.
A4 - Creating a Culture of Learning with collaboration of students is going to grow and grow. We can get out of the way.
A4: Is there learning w/o collaboration? It can't be much.
A4 That takes out the guesswork of engagement, and who doesn't love (and remember) work smarter, not harder?
Special thanks to for moderating tonight! He's a positive deviant & champion for kids!
A4: When my learners design their own learning targets in the spring, it validates what we do in the room for them
A4: Control & collab builds capacity in learners - their engagement skyrockets, and so does their learning
it's Intrinsic motivation,a behavior that is driven by internal rewards, motivation to engage arises from within
People, my little fingers cannot respond fast enough to all your insight and brilliance! I'm barely finished with Q2!
Culture is a term used to validate our behaviour. It has no meaning when it comes to learning.
Yes! I need to give them more freedom to do that...don't want to limit what they can do. https://t.co/9V9CqN5t1s
Michelle, don't we love it when our Learners amaze us and themselves? https://t.co/QLdJnlA6jP
A4 - I need to stop being nervous about letting go. I need to let them explore/investigate/discover more. I bet they will amaze me.
A4: The more I do collaboration and promote it, the more I realize that Ss need to be taught how to collaborate. No one taught me.
A4: When learners create class norms, misbehavior is not a dictator "catching the bad kids;" it is "us" not doing what "we" agreed
More engagement, more time on task, more learning
Though Learning IGNITES when we collaborate effectively. Just look at this Crew tonight! https://t.co/HW70rPYfqk
A4: Is there learning w/o collaboration? It can't be much.
A4 they take the steps logical to them, not the ones you think/know they should take - helps to build/connect the learning
Such a good point! They need strategies for collaboration, and models of what good collab looks like
A4 empowering the Ss will motivate them to take ownership of their learning
The example pointed to the question about external forces
A4 Ss might be more successful if they weren't hungry or worrying about home problems. I can solve the hunger issue, but not other
Smiling with you, Erin. https://t.co/XsZgwUqQGc
A4 That takes out the guesswork of engagement, and who doesn't love (and remember) work smarter, not harder?
Hello Mind if I join you? 5th grade T from Utah
Great way of looking at that!
https://t.co/fNnjtPeMmk
A4: When learners create class norms, misbehavior is not a dictator "catching the bad kids;" it is "us" not doing what "we" agreed
We MUST all be Positive Deviants for our Learners! https://t.co/I1kDOrDax9
Special thanks to for moderating tonight! He's a positive deviant & champion for kids!
A3: I look for opportunities for my students to be leaders. They often collaborate with and mentor yournger students.
A4: Control and collaboration set the stage for Ss to produce amazing learning opportunities. They fall in love w/ what they learn.
I am not sure we get out of the way or just be in the back seat to give them the support they need
Wow! Learning designed by our kids. What a great statement! https://t.co/gHgyT49m1J
A4: When my learners design their own learning targets in the spring, it validates what we do in the room for them
A3: My students have also shared their passion about STEAM at conferences as they often present with us.
Robert, we need your wisdom. My fingers are almost numb! Step it up! https://t.co/2tw8EojcCP
People, my little fingers cannot respond fast enough to all your insight and brilliance! I'm barely finished with Q2!
Yes...I've had some not-so-great experiences with groupwork/collab ..need to set it up better for success https://t.co/NSa6KT933I
Such a good point! They need strategies for collaboration, and models of what good collab looks like
can u provide an example where culture isn't?
we do a lot of individual goal setting in my classroom and they have to make a plan of how to get there
We are learning from each other... https://t.co/jRctyLiaGc
A4: The more I do collaboration and promote it, the more I realize that Ss need to be taught how to collaborate. No one taught me.
Kids presenting at conferences are always the main attraction :)
I find that discussion protocols are really helpful with this
Learners taking Ownership! Wow, Irene! https://t.co/rcTFoAJ1Rk
A4 empowering the Ss will motivate them to take ownership of their learning
Q5 in one minute...
for "Culture of Learning"
Hello! Hope the world is treating you right---and that you're blogging about it LOL
remember we all learn from our mistakes and then we try again
Sandy, honored to have you with us in tonight!
Good one! ;-)
Hope you are doing well too!
https://t.co/lblHcpcTz5
Hello! Hope the world is treating you right---and that you're blogging about it LOL
Q5 - Describe how you might more effectively share Learning Goals with your Learners to obtain even more buy-in.
yes it's important to teach procedures and how to work as a group
Thanks Rik! Always learn a lot at
Exactly, Rik! Because now that Ss are invested in what they are learning, Ss want to share it articulately. https://t.co/wok9PeF3Mi
A3 - We find our Learners exhibit more confidence and polish their communication skills when they lead more of our Learning!
I remember that impact Students made when that facilitated at an Edcamp! https://t.co/mDeBAlPhRi
Kids presenting at conferences are always the main attraction :)
A5 - We're learning to post our Learning Goals around our learning environment and share and restate them often.
A5 - share & refer to the 'big picture' more often (although probably not a visual map!) Make it more interesting & relevant.
A5 LG must me Ss friendly and relevant to their lives
A5:. At the beginning boil the class down to understandable BIG ideas. These ideas will be the foundation of the course.
A5: kid friendly language w/ones I design, useful feedback, accurate proficiency self assessment breeds them making their own goals
But I like the visual map or big picture, Michelle! https://t.co/iUI7WQh0yd
A5 - share & refer to the 'big picture' more often (although probably not a visual map!) Make it more interesting & relevant.
A5 - When our Learners rewrite our Learning Goals in their words, our Goals are better attained and better explained.
A5: the difference when I talk to my Ss about the full-year big picture "stuff" vs when I don't is HUGE - schema for their learning
Understanding by Design = UBD https://t.co/ywxyJbTww3
A5:. At the beginning boil the class down to understandable BIG ideas. These ideas will be the foundation of the course.
A5: (Learning goals) when learners make them, they do them. Simple as that.
A5 Ss need to be part of writing, similar to how Ts buy in to evals with some say in the details, otherwise an Rx with no appt!
with 3rd graders I have them graph their begin of the year assessments first then we make a goal line and ways 2 get ther
A5: Present LTs to Ss at the beginning of the unit, and tell them "Go now and show me." Help them along the way if they ask.
Learning Outcomes (Standards) in their language! https://t.co/stK5WeKuaF
A5: kid friendly language w/ones I design, useful feedback, accurate proficiency self assessment breeds them making their own goals
Laughing! (still don't get them...!) :)
https://t.co/5ieUe6HLX8
But I like the visual map or big picture, Michelle! https://t.co/iUI7WQh0yd
A5 - share & refer to the 'big picture' more often (although probably not a visual map!) Make it more interesting & relevant.
A5 - OUR KIDS are writing learning goals and then collecting the data to see how they are measuring up against their goals.
A5 I write our learning objectives on the board. We read them together so Ss know our purpose for the day
I had my Ss build a rubric using CCSS this year - such a meaningful experience for all of us
Love this, Lisa! https://t.co/oYvFfOMlyy
with 3rd graders I have them graph their begin of the year assessments first then we make a goal line and ways 2 get ther
Sounds like kid empowerment to me! :) LOVE it!
Grant Wiggins said learning should be relevant, meaningful and transferable. https://t.co/PtqH5N6xwa
I had my Ss build a rubric using CCSS this year - such a meaningful experience for all of us
A5 I try to connect it to real world stuff, problems they can relate to
A5 important for Ss to know big picture and also how to scale down into small manageable goals. Don't overwhelm
Culture binds up everything we think & do and allows the mind which created it to be happy with itself.
Stunning response! https://t.co/9htFOL6Cek
A5 - OUR KIDS are writing learning goals and then collecting the data to see how they are measuring up against their goals.
This is AWESOME!
https://t.co/maQFjwpQyW
A5 - OUR KIDS are writing learning goals and then collecting the data to see how they are measuring up against their goals.
This brings CLARITY https://t.co/GN6XV84d5x
A5 I write our learning objectives on the board. We read them together so Ss know our purpose for the day
Culture limits, learning enriches.
Even young children grasp this idea when it relates to them
Just ask yourself whether you'd want to be a Learner in your class... Just a thought....
It's intuitive - it provides narrative for the year and helps us build a "story" for the class - perfect for ALL ages
Our Learners tell me they love the Real-World Connections! https://t.co/JRh4jbbh5Z
A5 I try to connect it to real world stuff, problems they can relate to
Q6 in one minute...
for "Culture of Learning"
A5 - we say, "Instruction First and Culture Always."
we do this and add the how it will be shown
Q6 - Share how you might see a SHIFT in your Culture of Learning by incorporating more Learner self-assessment.
Why do we attach the word "culture" to "learning"? What are we trying to do? Are we avoiding personal responsibility?
a5: our learners love to connecting content in culturally relevant ways and our Ts empower them to have a voice in showing mastery
Deep! https://t.co/ygzX4zpwF8
Just ask yourself whether you'd want to be a Learner in your class... Just a thought....
I love real world connections. For place value we wrote checks to buy candy in a pretend store
A6 - always looking for new ideas on this one... need to increase the ways & activities that they can self-assess.
A6 - We still have more work to do to incorporate more Learner self-assessments in our learning. I'm thinking we'll chart more.
A6 - We're learning from how to use more Learner self-assessments to improve communication and trust.
A6: hold Ss-run design challenges connected to social justice issues within their communities, ePortfolios, Ss designed rubrics
Would like to hear more about charting sometime...
https://t.co/pUtyWosDvG
A6 - We still have more work to do to incorporate more Learner self-assessments in our learning. I'm thinking we'll chart more.
A6 Parents really enjoy student led conferences where Ss discuss goals and back up progress w their data/evidence of learning
A5 Reading all your great answers about goals, but my focus is more on process & journey. Multiple paths & turns but equal joy.
A6: More personal accountability intrinsically. It's not the teacher or outside forces keeping Ss accountable.
A6: When learners self-assess, they OWN their learning and results - shift from "she gave me" to "I earned"
A6 Ownership of learning that doesn't start and end with me, especially this time of year. 😬
A6 I need to do more of this. I think Ss are tougher on themselves. Just need to create a rubric...
Our Learners deserve to see how our Learning connects to the world in which they live! https://t.co/mtNgMiTwib
I love real world connections. For place value we wrote checks to buy candy in a pretend store
Powerful when Ss make connection between effort and progress
Love This! https://t.co/gCxudddQLN
A6: When learners self-assess, they OWN their learning and results - shift from "she gave me" to "I earned"
Aren't we just trying to promote life long learners within their own cultures?
Can u provide an example?
Owned Learning is Retained Learning... https://t.co/SyYlynO32Y
A6 Ownership of learning that doesn't start and end with me, especially this time of year. 😬
YES! I think about this especially for my graduating seniors - they NEED to own it
When we foster trust, respect and value individuals, I believe learning is enriched for everyone!
we attach it because is how we do business, teaching and learning,
use technology if possible Socrative or kahoots
our Ss create WOOP goals and have a personalized plans in many classes that they co-develop.
You bet they do! https://t.co/4eahF7k5c1
YES! I think about this especially for my graduating seniors - they NEED to own it
Yes because they literally own it in college or trade schools!
so it makes life manageable?
I used a Google Form today to collect feedback from our Learners to become more effective.
There is nothing there but that which we think is there.
the thrill of watching this happen is worth every moment
Blog post coming soon??
https://t.co/htH2vZKco9
I used a Google Form today to collect feedback from our Learners to become more effective.
Thanks for a great ! Rik, awesome job leading (as always!) . Have a great week, all!
It takes my breath away every time... https://t.co/xj6fIZNweZ
the thrill of watching this happen is worth every moment
My kids loved kahoot it. Then I had them create the quizzes.
sorry I have to run early!
It's great when our Learners have their part in creating assessments
Thank you to our entire Crew for some great sharing and inspiration tonight!
Thanks for making be a better educator and benefiting my future learners.
Totally agree! Hey Rik-watch for blog post from our friend here Her thoughts are valuable/need to shared
Let's be the educators that really make a difference in the lives of our Learners. Deal?
Like culture, they are all made up in the mind to validate. Trust. Respect, etc.
Thank you to for sharing the helm tonight on a "Learner-centered Culture of Learning".
Do we hv anything other than imaginary things in learning?
Thanks for a great evening, - always a pleasure learning with all of you!
I'm better versed after tonight's in tending to the needs of our Learners. Thank you all!
we are talking about students w/great possibilities to create an environment of learning,
learning is all in our head, so it is all imaginary
Teaching seems more like religion than anything else.
In our , we have mostly real things every day...
Great sharing tonight! Finish the year strong! ( For those who still have to finish the year :)
