A2 Putting thoughts down on paper... Ideas, reflections, organizing, goals, etc...
Here's Q2 again...
What is writing? How do you define it?
A1 In the past yr I've written reference letters, letters to hospitals negotiating bills and birthday odes to friends and family.
They better, my wife and I exchange my apology letter and she writes my to do list, does that count?
The very act of putting them on paper helps us to think even more about them.
it's communicating. Pure & simple it's expressing thoughts, ideas & opinions in a format that speaks to you.
A2 To me it is self reflection, making sense of my thoughts, expression of my imagination &… https://t.co/pxzL3ZG3AF

Writing is any writen form of communication if it's written and it communicates, it's writing
Ahh nice, I am doing this more and more
A1. I like recognizing effective leadership communication as writing practice https://t.co/tcppogaJMP
Q1: When do we see writing in our every day lives.
A2 Personally, writing is how I express myself, process what I've heard, solidify my understanding, stretch my thinking.
A2. I struggle with writing. I am a great verbal communicator. But writing, we'll that's why I am here tonight!
Great point! Then we can read them ourselves as well.
A2 writing is communication with others and ourselves, directing information to its destination

A2 Writing is the process by which nature shows us how messy our thinking is
Yeah, started this summer on long drives to my dad's, great way to process on solo trips
I'm the opposite, my thoughts flow much better writing than speaking plus
A2 Writing can be a release to the writer as well as the reader.
Sorry I'm late! Ashley from North Texas Area.
A2 Writing is like my best friend. I can write anything, in any way. I learn the power of reflection. I gain skills through it.
Q3 "What are the benefits of providing students with frequent opportunities to write?"
Dani here from Va. Latin teacher & writer.
A2. I have my Ss reflect on everything we do I class. From goals, assignments, midpoint and post reflections. Ss > me
A2: Writing is the process of sharing ideas through written words or graphics
A2: writing is a powerful tool to communicate

I love it! "Process, solidify, stretch" writing propels us on our learning journey! https://t.co/QVAKFJ44Xd
A2 Personally, writing is how I express myself, process what I've heard, solidify my understanding, stretch my thinking.
This is really important! Abundant reflection opportunities
https://t.co/WXuRcqYmyq
A2. I have my Ss reflect on everything we do I class. From goals, assignments, midpoint and post reflections. Ss > me
Hi
Carl from Avonsleigh Australia
A1 I started writing everyday a while back. Now my students do too. 1:1 marble composition books. Old school.
A2: writing can touch people in ways we never dreamed possible
More opportunities to think creatively and openly
Writing is Magic. It creates a place where dreams form words and stories connect worlds. Where thoughts become visual
A2: At the most basic level writing is the act of putting words on paper/computer/insert place.
we can help each other then!
A2. An expression/communication of tangible and non-tangible concepts or things. https://t.co/Sjk9Wjt4P6
Q2 What is writing? How do you define it?
A3 the benefits of frequent opportunities to write is that it is helping Ss to be heard and explain their thoughts
A3 practice makes perfect and this could not be more true for writing also developing more complex ideas takes time and effort
Music on paper that talks when I don't, sings when I can't, and inspires long after I've put the pen down. https://t.co/7zqh1sQRTQ
Doodling is so important to our desired goals, it is really important
A3 Ideally, the more varied and dynamic the opportunities are the less fear and discomfort will be associated with writing.
I have them reflecting a lot this year as well.
A3: Gives Ss a chance to reflect, think about their learning, practice communication.
Writing every day is a rewarding journey that is worth embarking on! https://t.co/oODO9Suk9k
A1 I started writing everyday a while back. Now my students do too. 1:1 marble composition books. Old school.
A2: Writing is a way to bridge your thoughts and ideas with another.
A2 Writing has helped many get through difficult times and better understand themselves.
A3)
Writing can be quickly lost. Frequent opportunity allows Ss to keep confidence and to recognise it as a form of communication
Ps- I'm Steff, a School Counselor from VB, Va here!
A3 opportunities for writing are KEY so students can feel the joy of writing and not view it in a negative light
A2 Writing can be as simple as getting your thoughts on paper. It also is a craft though to make the words express what you feel.
Writing makes sense of information we store away, it allows us to make connections & find re… https://t.co/4DaLyQ5OnV
A3: everyone is thinking and responding
Jumping in late but I made it!
A3 Time to process/reflect before sharing w/ others. The more we write the more natural the process becomes.
A3 Writing becomes less intimidating. Gives Ss & Ts insight into how they think and learn, who they are.
A2: Writing is a continual process of reflection.
My goal is to begin Sketchnoting like https://t.co/1A1X9yYztT
Doodling is so important to our desired goals, it is really important
Giving students the chance to express themselves in their own unique way can drive a true writing community
I like how you found important layers here.
it makes such a difference. I am hoping they retain information better with reflection
A3 frequent writing opps allow Ss the opp to slow down and express their thoughts and feelings.
Writing allows Ss to find their voice and a way to enhance their self-expression. To see the big picture.
I lead many math PD sessions. Sometimes I hear "So much of that was about language, writing, and speaking." Yes!
are we going to the Planetarium? I love the Planetarium.
Heck, we're all writing now.
Yes. Putting thoughts into words solidifies the information.
CRISS picture notes are a rest way to connect writing and pictures. Really shows thought processes & creativity!
I lead many math PD sessions. Sometimes I hear "So much of that was about language, writing, and speaking." Yes! Important!
A3 writing helps them make connections to text, to themselves and to the real world
Hi there! Hope it went well today!
Sure! Let's go. Are you a mystery guest?
Q4 How does writing promote reflection, and why is that important?
A3 one of our Lit specialists always said writing is thinking at the end of a pen. It's great to let Ss share their thinking
A3 we have to soothe the innate human need to communicate- opportunities provide a way to better process and express
Great responses! I love learning here!
A3: Ss need opportunities to write to make brain connections. Writing isn't easy for some students, but that changes with time.
Thank you. When I taught 4th grade I use to have them talk first then write. It made it easier for some Ss.
A3: Ss are able to clarify thinking and learning. Make connections to prior learning and try to make sense of disequalibrium.
A4. I believe writing in reflection will help my math students think about the concepts, the struggle and RETAIN the information
Speak more to this, how might that look if I'm a Ss in your class?
A3 Reluctant writers become less reluctant when they write regularly!
We trouble makers need to stick together!
Hi Steff, glad to see you're adding to our convo tonight
A4 you have to think about writing either before or during the process so your brain is constantly processing what you want to say.
Me, too! My math classes are filled with many, many writing opportunities. https://t.co/5EmU4dvpkX
A4. I believe writing in reflection will help my math students think about the concepts, the struggle and RETAIN the information
A4 Reflection is important; it helps balance what was, is, and what's going to be relevant from the experience
A4 Love this Q!Time w/one's own thoughts, sorting out what's important.Reflection is self-discovery, leads us to where we need to be
Great point! Opportunities matter! https://t.co/ftRNyCWlfe
A3 Reluctant writers become less reluctant when they write regularly!
I love this, it also has this strange thing that when the right words are strung together, it conveys life chngin ids
A4 most writing requires insight and reflection looking for deeper meaning, how things are connected, drawing comparisons etc
CRISS picture notes are a great way to connect writing and pictures. Really shows thought processes & creativity!
This is 1st chat I have been able to make and it's a ton of work!
A4 The act of writing is in itself reflective. The process of revising is another opp for reflection.
A4 When a physical somewhat thoughtless action occurs (writing) the mind releases; seeing what's written, mind regurgitates the data
A1 I write emails to parents, Ts, Ss, & other staff. I journal at times. Write outlines, agendas, notes, ideas, training tips.
So very true. Students need to understand that words, spoken or written are powerful.
In same way math is language, it is a means to communicate about our world
A4 stopping to digest what we write brings reflection, which leads to growth.
A4 pt 2 Reflection is important for growth. We never become better without thoughtful reflection
A3: Writing allows Ss to communicate, share ideas, and brainstorm.
A3 Gives Ss opportunities to express themselves on paper. Teaches them that writing is just as important as communicating.
Yes! I'm going to share this idea with many others here in Oregon if okay with you? https://t.co/e0KnXlFPDV
In same way math is language, it is a means to communicate about our world
So many parallels between math & ELA. Many of same strategies apply
Yes, that ideas represented by these abstract combinations of letters create powerful ways to share
I still think is a mystery guest. Maybe and
A4 it is important because through reflection we can develop more complex and critical thinking skills
Writing in math is undervalued. It NEEDS to happen everyday!
A4
Sometimes I write with no idea where it is going. then I get there. that's why writing is so good for reflecting
A4
Sometimes I write with no idea where it is going. then I get there. that's why writing is so good for reflecting
Reflecting is so crucial in developing social skills and in building relationships. Also promotes a growth mindset.
Sure, it's not an original idea, math is language of sci for ex, it's how we write many sci facts
A4: Writing gives Ss and T a place to get thoughts organized and makes things more concrete. This helps with growth and ownership.
HA! Forgot to be searching, so busy reading!
By the way - thanks for allowing us to risk something new...
Mystery Guest night.
Risking/Reflecting/Learning
A2 the skills of using words to express thoughts, feelings, ideas. Using words to convey meaning.
I am too focused on that ! "SQUIRREL?" That's me tonight.
I think you are one of the mystery guests!
A dirty secret of mine, I take ELA strategies and use them in math, ex. Guided Reading
Sorry, I am having difficulty following the chat as I am not seeing all tweets. It's a mystery to me! 🙂
Are there clues to the mystery guests?
I'm sorry they are not showing up for everyone. I'll try to RT Q's as we go.
A4: ... I mean even now as adults, we give each text message a once over to make sure it's good... https://t.co/8LGLA12N7o

I would love 2 see Ss take a concept and sketch what it means https://t.co/QK4OYTnIBZ
Speak more to this, how might that look if I'm a Ss in your class?
I am glad you did (: LOL seemed to obvious, but that's usually hardest to see
Who? I am here because it's a conference day tomorrow so willing to stay up!
Interesting, so what might that look like?
Q5 "What are some strategies we can use to incorporate writing into our lessons?"
Is here? Haven't seen anything from him yet....... Maybe HE IS the mystery guest!
So valuable. Plus Ss see transfer of skill sets
A4 Reflection is important so Ss can discover their strengths & weaknesses & path to growth
I think is too!
And too!
What do you think?
I use them in Science, now that I'm in mid shool. Shhh...
I'm not sure why my tweets aren't showing up on your tweetdeck.
Hmm...
Slow Tweetdeck tonight?
A5 Exit notes, CLOZE, reflection, brainstorming, mind mapping, collaboration, communication...so many ways
Good point! When you do this do you let it sit for a few days first?
a4 Writing is nature process of showing us how messy our thinking is, this is especially true when reflecting.
A3 Learning, sharing, thinking, creative expression, processing ideas, reflecting, growing as individuals, understanding self.
I have conference day tomorrow..... staying up late.....
A4 Promotes reflection where Ss can learn new things about themselves just on paper. Helps them gain confidence & be positve
A4: ... You probably change it based on lessons you've learned from other text messaging mishaps https://t.co/8LGLA12N7o
A5 quick writes and stop and jots, guided notes, reflection logs...quick and easy ways to tie writing in
A5: As a math teacher, writing is not always easy to incorporate, but I try to get students writing about how and why they solved _.
Q5 What are some strategies we can use to incorporate writing into our lessons?
right! Sci/Math have dense texts, usually more than ELA, so simple sent conveys ideas in terse lang
model. Ss set goals, reflect on each activity with I can statement, a midpoint and post assessment reflection
A5 love love LOVE using meaningful sentences with my students to help with context clues.
A5 Exit notes are a great way to see what the Ss are learning.
A4 I like that both writing and reflection are ongoing. It gives us pause and requires us to practice patience
I love this, I find I'm thinking 1 thing, start writing, and end up somewhere so different
I am so distracted right now.....
I do, actually! I like to be out of whatever mindset I was in previously to ensure I still truly agree with myself 😉
A5 Good to incorporate shared and partner writing. Add that collaboration and communication (in addition to written communication)
Those bubbles mean something......
A5 Mindmapping, creating scrapbooks, comics, create graphs, charts, allotting a 'scribble time', letters to heroes (living or dead).
Great strategy! I'm starting to use "exit note" type strategies right in the middle of the lesson to increase WR.
A5 I use writing in math everywhere, it's so important, it's 1st step to math literacy.
A5:As a tech coach,I see asking Ss to blog about their learning could create excitement as well as offer an opportunity for feedback
Writing leads us on important journeys that we didn't know we needed to take.
https://t.co/BxiI7qcXy4
I love this, I find I'm thinking 1 thing, start writing, and end up somewhere so different
A5 also in our social skills lessons students write feelings, compliments, & self reflections.
I'm so sorry..., I was at my son's open house tonight. But I will be sure to add my thoughts.
I don't always do that, but I find that it really helps when I do.
Sometimes you just know this person gets me (: That's what Steve's writing just told me https://t.co/MvIbKDpY31
Writing leads us on important journeys that we didn't know we needed to take.
https://t.co/BxiI7qcXy4
I love this, I find I'm thinking 1 thing, start writing, and end up somewhere so different
I concur. Our midwest and west coast chats are killing my sleep patterns ;)

So true. Without it you lose the track very quickly
It also helps me if I'm working on multiple projects at once and can move away from one... then come back.
Choose five adjectives to describe what you are looking at. None of those words can be a color or texture. https://t.co/CMGtjmYAsv
I think we may have been separated at birth, so very true, I'm same
Excellent! We need to unite more to our cause
possibly lava. It makes bubbles.
A5: Allow Ss to write about their passions, dreams, questions
is pretty sneaky w/ technology, what's up? What are the speech bubbles appearing?
That is an excellent point. Writing doesn't have to be words it can be codes. Ss love to write codes for .
A5 have Ss blog & reflect on portfolio entries, Ss Twitter responses
So true, I like what said, sometimes it takes us on journey we didn't know we needed to take
A5 I only have a GT seminar. I use blogging & emails as our communication tools. Blogs where they show/reflect on the new learning.
I sense a hyperdoc team taking shape right before our eyes!
A5. Always love journaling, concept description, collaboration, delivery.
For sure! These need to be earlier to accommodate us.
A5 Ss can self-assess what they've learned, their own personal assessment. Let them give themselves a grade and be accountable
Maybe have Ss make a claim about math concept & then provide evidence & reasoning 4 their claim. A science… https://t.co/eRNTo9XvL0
A5: As a math teacher, writing is not always easy to incorporate, but I try to get students writing about how and why they solved _.
I do this. It works great for warm ups
Love the specific examples
Those are some awesome ideas!
Yes, that is why I am starting this year.
absolutely this. I find it incredibly helpful to do just this so I can contribute to all things equally well.
I can't focus with those! Shiny objects....
CER's and science lab conclusions
Yes, I think it's a powerful strategy. The Q's really draw students in.
Look at you throwing in some Kagan structures into writing (: awesome
A5: We use the design thinking LAUNCH for all projects and activities, L = Look, learn, listen (write, brainstorm, share)
A5 My high school Eng T had us write for the first 20 mins about any question she had up. Mostly it was things we did. I loved it!
I teach math and science, but sci is easier to incorporate writing at the Elem level.
I just finished updating my SB report card to include argument/CER writing.
LOL, some may say the Right Coast is always ahead (; If that helps
Some many wonderful chats this evening! Had a blast participating. For now it's time for bed! Thank you
Did your own writing surprise you? Where it went?
Awesome ! In such an instant gratification world, a reset with writing is a great idea! https://t.co/1Hi6OKVZGc
Great strategy! I'm starting to use "exit note" type strategies right in the middle of the lesson to increase WR.
A6 There is safety in writing. You can reveal multiple layers. It's a way to make thinking visible. Allows you to show thinking
A6 Writing gives Ss many ways to advance their thinking, reaching for higher level thought processes, time to think about response
A6 writing gives access to the hidden-self when one is brave enough to look deeply.
A5 I am going to have guest bloggers on my blog this year. I am excited to see what they write.
You can have them rewrite the standards as questions themselves too. Have them answer for elem students
Thank you. Just naming everything I've used in my social studies classes!
A6: Writing unleashes our past, present, and future.
I haven't tried that. I think I will now, though!
I agree but I think we need to work harder at it even though it's not easy https://t.co/Y1LYPLGeo1
I teach math and science, but sci is easier to incorporate writing at the Elem level.
Yes. I always say it is not science unless you can write it and someone can follow this and repeat it
that is awesome! Do they also get to share with the world or is that controlled at your school?
Will definitely check it out, thanks!
Q6 What does "Writing unleashes multiple layers of thinking," mean to you?
A6: think, process, plan, write, repeat
Writing them for younger Ss shows they really know the content. We just wrote Cells Children's Books
It's always helpful for specific examples, so good.
A6 Writing is very reflective. It helps us to put things in perspective.
LOL I feel like that could be a new song (:
A6forces you to go surface for basics and get deeply personal to add and develop ideas
Who are mystery guest, please!!!!
The iterations of thinking whihc are so necessary to learning are often clarified (or discovered) while writing.
A6 Writing takes us deeper academically and personally. It's the outlet that allows us to express our own truths.
Bc of writing, i have been able to discover things about myself i though didn't exist.Ive learned writing will always be my bestie.
A6: writing=evaluating, analyzing, comparing, contrasting
This is certainly what we want for our students. https://t.co/cgtZmmQuxk
A6 Writing is very reflective. It helps us to put things in perspective.
I think you guys are right. I have noticed a trend with some of the tweets. https://t.co/EPa2WGQzal
I think is too!
And too!
What do you think?
I don't know. Wondering myself...
A6 Thinking about not only content/ideas but purpose and audience allows us to think about topic from different perspectives.
That is really fun to see!
It's the beginning of a life skill that is life changing
Yep that's why we deconstruct them and find new ways to bring them into lessons! Mastery over assessments
I have my guesses on the mystery guests!
Q7 What tools or strategies do you personally use to reflect - and why are they effective?
Oh interesting, I missed some, explain more here.
A6 Writing displays a piece of your identity. It says this is my thought. I own it. My thought matters.
I would love to see https://t.co/7c9ogaMlwy
Writing them for younger Ss shows they really know the content. We just wrote Cells Children's Books
Interesting, explain more here
a6 Writing can inspire new connections
Writing often helps us find our way toward clarified thinking.
Mystery guest. It's always the caretaker from the amusement park
A6 when you start writing your'e forced to think/analyze/reflect/be creative on which words you can use to express yourself clearly.
A7 Long drives, sitting on bench outside, reflecting in my journal...talking it out with a friend
Writing, unlike speaking, enables people to gain clarity at different levels.
LOL, perhaps proper marketing would help, love the idea
I was thinking that because some tweets say "Tweet unavailable" they are the mystery guest. I could be wrong though. :-)
Absolutely! Well stated https://t.co/XOL0SAna1s
A6 Writing displays a piece of your identity. It says this is my thought. I own it. My thought matters.
I didn't know Scooby Doo was in the chat.
A7 I often get ss to start by just writing what they are thinking. Too often they feel constrained about getting it right.
Oh interesting, I'm not experiencing that, so I don't know. I'm still looking for patterns
Well said. Writing is funny layered thing that acts as both microscope and mirror. https://t.co/GhhCJ1up1J
A6 Writing takes us deeper academically and personally. It's the outlet that allows us to express our own truths.
I'm not sure what the "tweet unavailable" is tonight. That's not the mystery clue, though.
Writing is visual (memory) words on paper tactile (pencil or comp keys)
Auditory (hear word… https://t.co/H5Lf4CepEk
Q6 What does "Writing unleashes multiple layers of thinking," mean to you?
Doing other things so don't know if I'm seeing all but my theory is Maggie, Victor, Amy, Teresa & Lena have asked Qs re the mystery
I think 'this tweet is unavailable' phenomenon is more about the i capability of twitter to load tweet than a mystery guest :P
I have several of those? Interesting, I wonder why
A6: Currently blogging! Creates a space where I can reflect! Need to do it more and read others!
It would be cool to be a mystery guest.
It's Scooby Doo! He's the mystery guest!!!!!! Solved!
That Mystery Machine is everywhere
Your heart and mind become in sync the more you write too. https://t.co/XCmtouEYWQ
A6 SO much goes into the act of writing-cognitive wheels churning in many different processes!Lots of movement and… https://t.co/r3EI5nZG81
Q6 What does "Writing unleashes multiple layers of thinking," mean to you?
Layers of thinking- memory, making connections, finding relevance, creativity, imagination all aspects of writing.
Correct. The tweet unavailable is a twitter issue - not a mystery clue. Thanks for mentioning. https://t.co/XfljxmqB60
I think 'this tweet is unavailable' phenomenon is more about the i capability of twitter to load tweet than a mystery guest :P
Yeah, isn't it a cool idea, like Clue with great content
it does allow the opportunity to reflect more thoroughly. Unless we are really present in conversation, reflection is hard.
I will keep looking. Thank you for letting us know.
A great analogy for writing, love this! https://t.co/BzcFLCivfd
writing has that quality to it... It's also like filling a bucket with water to look for leaks...
A7: I spend time in the a.m. doing yoga. I try to stay open to lessons life is teaching. Keeps me responsive to the needs of others.
where are the Scooby-snacks
otherwise it's "magic" I say.
(Also helps explain why some later elements are named and some not)
A7 use writing to hold your self accountable, what have you learned today? Was your day successful? Self Accountability is effective
Ahh, maybe it's when I cursed...I have a potty mouth
A7 journaling, Twitter chats. My favorite tool is blogging! If I'm learning new info I like to take notes to reflect as I'm learning!
Q7 What tools or strategies do you personally use to reflect?
This truly is a scavenger hunt!
Like to use the F-word, like function, fraction, etc
A7 Journal, tweets, emails when necessary, and (unpublished) blog posts.
A7 I often reflect through talking with my team members and processing out loud through a learning experience and how it played out.
Let's talk about what we'll do in the classroom this week.
Mind drift makes 'speaking' less reflective than writing. So right :)
Ahh thanks for clarifying
I have so many unpublished posts. Some are published, some are just for my reflection.
Amen sister! 😘😘 https://t.co/MMX7q449VF

I love that, will the Ss showcase them to the other Ss?

Q7 What tools or strategies do you personally use to reflect?
I'm trying to get students to find their voice, not relying so heavily on citing what others say (and avoid plagiarism at 6th grade)
So powerful, it also transforms the language they use w/each other, opens up the synapses

Q8 What strategies will you use this week to create writing opportunities for your students?

YOU! You had a bubble in your tweet.
A8: I train teachers so I will intentionally harness the power of writing to keep connections going in our sessions
I know the feeling. Sometimes it's about courage, sometimes about completion.
Nice, what does that look like if I'm a Ss in your class?
Ahh nice, really takes ownership and produces great learning and communication when that happens
Has been a great chat. Please follow me and I'll follow you back so we can continue to collaborate!
We are going to have learning experiences so there is a reason to write!
