#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hey there, Master of Education!! Christine from brown Alberta. My fave thing this week was working with some @UCalgaryEduc students, learning more about inquiry! #kinderchat
Faige from wet rainy cold Los Angeles. Last week a subbed all week. Today half day in 3s. And that’s it for the week. Good thing because I think I’m coming down with a cold #kinderchat
So, my Tweetdeck is acting up. I'm trying to follow on regular Twitter through the hashtag. If I miss something or someone, please forgive and don't be afraid to tell me! #kinderchat
1/2 Tonight's inspiration came because I have been digging deeper into patterns with my class. I ended up pulling out my (very) old Mathematics Their Way book and discovered some excellent ideas. #kinderchat
It got me thinking... with all of the "new" are there any "golden oldies" out there that we have either never let go of, or are revisiting? And if you're a student, what about when you were in school? Anything that you'd like to try? #kinderchat
First, I love MTW and think it was ahead of its time! Second, I always use(d) Bill Martin's "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" as a great patterned text to use with young readers and writers #kinderchat
I was in 3s this morning and the playdough was out. I was really good about sharing, but it was soooo hard. Playdough for play, house area, for math, for writing. I can have playdough incorporated in all areas of curriculum #kinderchat
When I was in gr 1 French immersion, we had a literacy prog called "Luc et Martine." Short stories on sentence strips, in a pocket chart. We built fluency and confidence QUICKLY. It was not perfect but... I see the value in it. #kinderchat
I agree! It was way ahead of its time, and the activities seem to reach a deeper level than any current curriculum I've used. I'm impressed at this years group and their ability to transfer the idea of patterns. I think MTW is a big reason why. #Kinderchat
And the way it approached place value was genius. Seriously. Not for K, but so smart for G1 and more. Also - full disclosure: took the MTW workshop in 1984. Yikes. #kinderchat
You are right, Faige. We can incorporate play dough into so many areas, and think of all of the outcomes that one simple material can meet! It's why I always have it handy. #kinderchat
I loved our big books! Kinders were so excited to “read” the text. Many with repetitive patterns, rhyming. #kinderchat Fiction and non fiction so many concepts introduced
I remember being able to bring my own little sentence strips home, put them in order, read them to my brother.... I loved. That said: I did NOT struggle to read, & I don't know how it worked for kids who did. #kinderchat
Sometimes I find that we barely have enough time for big books! Isn't that crazy? I make sure to fit them in somehow into our day. But so much seems to be getting lost these days #kinderchat
Yes, I can't say any of my own children struggled with reading either. But I like the idea of breaking it down into sentences/word strips. It seems as if it would be more manageable? #kinderchat
It was really systematic: take home the whole story on one paper. Then, the sentence strips. Put them in order to make the story. Then we cut sentences into words. Put THEM In order. It made reading feel like solving a puzzle, which I LOVED. #kinderchat
Somehow along the way for accountability, testing, getting kids ready for the text grade we’ve robbed them of the here and now. So glad school that I sub (and taught in) supports these. It’s where we see kids navigate SEL #kinderchat
Some of us have years of experience, and some are just beginning their teaching journey. What is the number 1 lesson you've learned over the years, whether as a teacher or a student, that you can bring into the classroom? #kinderchat
Accountability, tests, and scripted curriculum. But I want to say, not all is bad, but when it interferes with DAP in Kindergarten, then it needs to be reviewed. We are piloting a scripted program now that I love, but something else has to give. #kinderchat
EVERY child learns at a different pace. Every child has strengthens. Every child wants to know they matter and you care. The rest falls into place #kinderchat
When in doubt, read a book. It will ALWAYS settle me, settle kids, build community, ignite conversation and connection, inspire questions. Kids who love stories will WANT to be readers. READ BOOKS READ BOOKS READ BOOKS. #kinderchat
I love this answer Faige! It is a reminder that we are people, not machines. We all learn when we are ready to. And, YES! The rest *does* fall into place! #kinderchat

Me too and I never forgot it. One of the reasons I became a teacher (also saw this when my son was in school). #kinderchat I wanted to make a difference for my students
That makes me so sad Brett! I can't imagine keeping a child in at recess. Especially at that age. I love that you're taking that experience and making it positive- by becoming the change you want to see. I look forward to seeing how you do this! #kinderchat

Problem is ... my school was more concerned about staying inside the classroom and in higher levels just giving grades instead of offering feedback and such. They disliked all the fun stuff at mine #KinderChat

It’s good in the way that you know first hand what NOT to do! Too many kids (esp boys!) need someone who understands them vs tries to control and manipulate their behavior #kinderchat
OMG smiling at the children is the first thing I tell new teachers/student teachers! So easy to forget when you are new focusing so hard on remembering everything, but KIDS NEEDS TO KNOW YOU LIKE THEM! #kinderchat
And it wasn't that I didn't wanna do the work .... it was just that I was slow with it. #KinderChat
Similar instance: In ninth grade I was placed in Algebra 1. I was in special ed and didn't have this in MS or late Elm. And the T thought I was one of those Ss #KinderChat
Is there anything from your own educational experience that you'd like to bring into your current context? Or you already are bringing into your current context? #kinderchat
Not me! How can one not smile if they’re doing something they LOVE. Seeing the kids rushing to hug and tell you something soooo important that smile is just there. #kinderchat
2/2: who was purposely not doing the work... And I about nearly got in trouble he never offered feedback or came to ask what's up
Thankfully two weeks after the school year started ... I was taken out of that class and put in sonsumer math and placed back in spec. ed #KinderChat
In my own kindergarten experience, I remember we would sit around the carpet and just talk about our day. I began doing that with my kiddos this year; brings the entire day into focus for us. We talk about how we feel in the morning and 1 good thing before we go home. #kinderchat
