Donna (Australian) currently working in an international school in Singapore. Also, an academic, book editor, newsroom writer and all round scholar... #edugladiators
A1: Student-centered is what happens after listening and observing has informed you how to personally respond. Centering requires calibration and effort... and compassion.
#edugladiators
Student-centered learning involves voice and choice. Have been leading an internal academy at our school that specializes in this approach and using #PBL as well for over four years now. #EduGladiators
A1: Learning where students are not sponges, but active creators of knowledge. Learning is based around preparing students for their futures. Thinking of a lot of examples at our school, especially this year! #edugladiators@ERobbPrincipal@mgrosstaylor
Student Centered learning is in part when students know where they're headed, they're tracking their data, they have choice in how they demonstrate their learning, and they have opportunities to share with an authentic audience. #studentleaders#EduGladiators
A1: Student centred learning looks at their strengths, interests and ideas first and the curriculum second. I firmly believe that we can build our instruction to our students we just have to take the time. #EduGladiators
A1: Student-centered learning is all about #UDL. Students have choice - they can learn how they want and express that learning in a way that works for them. #edugladiators
Jim Smith, Assessment Associate Solution Tree and currently helping to start up a new public charter school here in Minnesota. Usually can't chat on Sat. mornings but can jump in today. #edugladiators
A1. Student-centered learning refers to a wide variety of ed programs, learning experiences, instructional approaches, & academic-support strategies intended to address the learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual students. #edugladiators
A1) When student choice, voice, interests, personalities and learning styles are considered. We've got teachers using flexible spaces and seating in their classrooms. Makes me want to learn there! #EduGladiators
A1. Student centered learning is where the students are “thinking and working” within Quad D of rigor/Relevance. Students are empowered and doing authentic tasks. Best example is where are students did Design Challenge and created a Maker Space in our library. #edugladiators
Where the Ss direct the learning & take ownership. I train Ts how they can have the Ss create their own good questions to build foundational knowledge by showing a standard & asking to identify what are the words, terms, & details they don’t know or understand. #EduGladiators

Student voice and student choice - These are great points and also essential ones for student ownership of learning...That's where the buy-in starts. #EduGladiators
A1: Student-centered learning is when the teacher plans & facilitates. Students are doing the work, discussing, & working on a well-planned activity w/ all resources & materials available. They know where/who to go to for what they need - a peer, anchor chart, etc. #edugladiators
A1: students have more control over their learning. They are given choice and voice. The Ss become a large part of the learning process. The teachers role is of a strong facilitator instead of the one handing out all of the information. #EduGladiators
A1) Student centered learning allows them to create over consume & pursue their passions. Young adults have presented @waukeshaone held clothing drives, made sleeping mats for HAWs and collected food. #EduGladiators
A1) In order for learning to be student-centered, the student’s voice must be present.
Anytime Ss are presenting to the class, communicating in groups, writing to reflect on their performance as it relates to their future life, it is student-centered learning.
#EduGladiators
A1: Focused direction, PBL, conversation on what they need & want. S focused isn’t just about what they want, we must balance w/ what we know they need too! It’s got to be S engaged @ the core. #EduGladiators
A1: I think student-centered learning is when we focus on and do what's best for students. It will look different all the time. It is teaching to the students in front of you, not the ones of the past. #edugladiators
Indeed this is true Phil. It demonstrates that it's not the knowledge, but that it's the application of knowledge that makes the difference. All great innovation in our world is due to someone taking action on their knowledge and their belief in positive change. #EduGladiators

@MrPStrunk, @ERobbPrincipal, @mgrosstaylor
A1- Learning that is relevant to the needs and interest of individual students. I see this take place when our teachers and students conduct morning meetings each day. Topics vary and provide students with opportunities to lead in so many ways. #EduGladiators
A1) Student-centered learning involves valuing the gifts, talents, cultures, interests, and dispositions of your students. Adults must be willing to authentically learn with students. #EduGladiators
A1.b: I find that I have an important role with my students in helping them sort out their choices and priorities since they are not challenged to do that in other parts of education. #EduGladiators
A1: SCL is when the teacher is a facilitator and S's have some control of how they learn. They can connect learning w/their talents, passions, life goals, etc. #EduGladiators Learn Like A Pirate is a great guide to this! #learnlap@PaulSolarz
We have to be honest enough to listen for them.
Can we hear their voices in our classes?
Do we see their footprints on our lesson design?
#EduGladiators
A1: Student Centered Learning exists when teaching and learning is a dialogue guided by the educator but ample space is provided for Ss voice to be amplified and included in the design and execution of the learning #edugladiators
Many students of mine create project websites using tools such as Weebly. Infographics are also increasingly popular for sharing understanding. #EduGladiators
Learning with students means we have to accept we haven't learned it all. Embracing that humbling perspective has made a +++ difference for my teaching.
#EduGladiators
Morning!
A1: student centered learning allows students the opportunity to go from passive consumers to active producers. What are we doing to allow for creativity and application! @GereauNewTech Ss lead a chemistry fair for elementary students yesterday!
#EduGladiators
Love this. Teachers are guides in the process. How do teachers know what learning students have constructed? we must help them assess, AND know ourselves as educators. #EduGladiators
Student centered learning shifts the focus from teacher to student, from dependent to independent. I observed a teacher allowing Ss to create plans for test corrections, defining individually how they wanted to relearn and how they would show learning. #edugladiators
A2) Have Ss research, examine, investigate, and design to develop and demonstrate their learning. Also, stress communication - oral, written, creative, & technical. #EduGladiators

@EduGladiators, @mccoyderek, @PaulONeill1972, @D4Griffin3, @BrendanFetters, @mgrosstaylor, @Rdene915, @cskiles80, @SaneeBell
A1: My Ss final project for Modern US History. They get to choose any major event or invention between 1990 & 2012. Research paper & present to class. Never an issue getting high quality work when Ss choose topic & visual aid. #edugladiators
Those are great points Sandy! The point about students self-tracking their performance is important as a lifelong skill. As adults we're always assessing our own performance and making many refinements. Computers on planes assess factors and make adjustments. #EduGladiators
I’d also say it’s about “listening to the silence” and how we decode the silence as either congruent with our paradigm or challenging it. #edugladiators
A2: I think it depends on the Ts level of comfort with technology and what is available to them in their setting. Everyone can incorporate technology, even if it's something "small". I move at my own pace and that's okay! #edugladiators
A1) student center learning is just that, focused on the student. “No sage on a stage.” Ss are able to create their learning opportunities and explore within their interest. It brings the Ss world into the classroom. #EdUGladiators
A1: Student centered learning shifts the focus from teacher to student, from dependent to independent. I observed a teacher allowing Ss to create plans for test corrections, defining individually how they wanted to relearn and how they would show learning. #edugladiators
A2: A simple yet effective way to get some quick formative data on a concept is having students use google drawings to create a diagram(without labels) that explains the concept. #edugladiators
A2: Technology allows student choice, allows them to create, explore, and design, this demonstrating understanding and mastery of topic. In ES I love #seesaw and #flipgrid#EduGladiators
A2: If Ts are not experts at tech, become at expert at facilitating the kind of environment where Ss learn the tech while also using it to amplify their voice. Learn it together. They can't wait for us to have it all figured out.
#EduGladiators
@teresagross625 got me thinking about how our egos and past wounds trigger us emotionally and get us off track with student centered learning #EduGladiators
In reply to
@mccoyderek, @teresagross625, @teresagross625
We actually had a student forum/discussion with my students this week about the challenges between going back and forth between these two learning worlds, like they are doing in our #PBL academy #EduGladiators
A2: I have taken a significant step away from tech this year. It has made things less complicated but I am@open to ideas kids have such as Flipgrid, Prezi, IMovie and those options #EduGladiators
Your approach and perspective on this is great Brent. It shows, particularly for students with disabilities, that instructional design takes into account their needs first and not as an afterthought. Well said Brent... #EduGladiators
A2) Great teachers use technology to give their students a variety of options to learn. This is where choice comes in, and this is where students have the opportunity to showcase their strengths, rather than struggle through their deficiencies.
#EduGladiators
A2: I think using tech to give students a voice is deeply impactful. Using @padlet or @Flipgrid and actively have Ss explain the “what” behind their actions shows a deeper understanding of the activity. #EduGladiators
A2: Technology has allowed my Ss to use their voice in amazing ways. My Ss use Google slides, google draw, and @Flipgrid to collaborate with classmates and display their understanding. These platforms allow creativity and pushes them to reach higher expectations. #EduGladiators
To be honest, I don’t “want” to go back, but my emotional triggers keep pulling me back. That’s what I’m working on to become more student centered! #Edugladiators
A2: OMG: @Flipgrid is one of my faves! google classroom & @Seesaw are leaders in connecting what we do! I use them all for PD engaged T learning/ communication to model regularly. If we don’t have flattened wall transparency, we aren’t 21st century! #EduGladiators
A2) use the technology to enhance the learning and not push a specific tech on to them. Allow the students to “play” with the tech to discover what works best to show their learning. #EdUGladiators
A2: my school @heyward_gibbes definitely use technology to show learning! Coding is big, Video presentations, and PBL assignments across the curriculum are three. #EduGladiators
Student -Centered is not devoid of adult guidance. It is not all or nothing. It is a collborative effort that is built on a trusting relationship centered on #inquiry, #TrialAndError#Feedback#Success and #Growth for all parties involved. #EduGladiators
It's always great to connect with you, Derek! I'll connect with @Becky_Pizzo and @SarahKasprowicz and have them connect with you. The kids even presented at our school board for the student showcase! #EduGladiators

UDL is significant as it leads teachers to incorporate multiple modalities as part of their instruction. We're all hardwired differently as human beings. As a result, instruction should reflect that, and UDL is one way to begin that process. #EduGladiators
BOOM!!! Can’t be afraid to struggle and adjust. Leaders have to create this environment where teachers are given permission to try new things! #edugladiators
A2: If Ts are not experts at tech, become at expert at facilitating the kind of environment where Ss learn the tech while also using it to amplify their voice. Learn it together. They can't wait for us to have it all figured out.
#EduGladiators
A1. It is based on where each individual kid is at academically/socially and focuses on growth of each individual kid. Portfolios digital or otherwise are examples because they accurately show growth. #edugladiators
Agree with what you said, but I have also found it helpful to challenge students to periodically teach themselves some new tech tool. Otherwise they only use what they have already learned for productivity. Students get in ruts like us as adults! #EduGladiators
A2.2) currently #chatterpics and #appleclips are my two favorites. Even my introverts love it because you don’t need to show your face. It takes the creativity of video creation to another level. #appsmash#AppleEdu#EduGladiators
A2) Important to note that student-centered learning is not just designed in the classroom.
Students need a variety of ways to achieve success in HS. They’re not all going to the same place, so we need to stop treating them as if they are. Pathways are important.
#EduGladiators
A2) Letting Ss choose how they share their learning journey. Audio reading, voice typing, video creation, pod casts for example. When we remove the barriers their learning can be front & center. #EduGladiators
A2: Show What You Know Bingo is a great way to use tech intentionally and encourage students to create a representation of what they know! #EduGladiators
A2) I remember @kevinhoneycuttsayjbg that we can not just give students tech for the sake of giving them tech. We need to make sure that they learn how to create with the tech rather than watch others on the tech. #EduGladiators
A3: Goodbye industrialism; hello, facilitation and collaboration.
My wife teaches 2nd grade - the best change to her room was getting rid of her desk. More space to work together, fewer barriers.
We've done the same in our HS library, now Learning Commons.
#EduGladiators
A2. Ss in tech-supported classrooms are armed with powerful tools to help gather information, consult with fellow students or Ts & present their findings. Their confidence increases as they rely less on the T & more on their own initiative for knowledge-creation. #edugladiators
A2: Choice of tools is huge. If they don't want to be on camera, use voice overs. If they have a hard time in front of the class - have them make a movie, but at least require a live introduction. So many choices. #edugladiators
Correct that is why you let them play. I offer a wide variety, then work with small groups to go over the basics. Some students will attend all the small groups to learn. Then allow to play. It exposes to so much! #EduGladiators
BAMM. Not just important in tech. Students at all levels must be challenged and brought into an assessment process which shows their growth and builds self assessment practices. #EduGladiators
A3) We're in the process of reimagining our computer lab as an Imagination Lab for makerspace, science and other hands-on, collaborative, messy activities. #EduGladiators

This is our new Co[LAB] at Carson! For 10 years this was full of unused lockers. Now, we use this space to teach critical skills for life alongside content. For example, we teach technical theatre in a combined course with Math 1 in here.
#EduGladiators
A1&A2)Good morning, #edugladiators! Cris, AP from central Texas here. I saw the questions and I had to jump in. Ss centered learning means getting the Ss to take complete ownership of their learning, from top to bottom and adjusting the lesson to reflect that...
A3: With tech, learning doesn’t need to only exist within the classroom. Classes can move into the hallways or even better outside when the weather cooperates. Also, combining learners that never would have the chance to collaborate now becomes a possibility. #EduGladiators
In reply to
@EduGladiators, @mccoyderek, @D4Griffin3, @BrendanFetters, @mgrosstaylor, @Rdene915, @Maverikedu12, @cskiles80, @SaneeBell
...so why limit how technology is implemented and let the Ss decide how to implement it and showcase their learning on the topic being covered in class. #EduGladiators
I like your answer Teresa because it acknowledges that all learning experiences have common elements, but that we shouldn't restrict ourselves into thinking that the end product (learning) should look the same across grades, schools, districts, and cities. #EduGladiators
A3: In my current role, I am observing schools across NYC almost daily. I am still shocked to see how many classrooms are still in rows or pairs. They are hard to move around, don't allow for as much collaboration, and don't allow for flexible grouping. #edugladiators
A3: in my room I lowered the kidney table to support yoga balls, I have 3 standing desks, a carpeted area with bean bags and pillows and I don't have desks I have tables. I love our learning areas and so do the Ss. #EduGladiators
I subbed in a co-taught classroom yesterday & watched the T doing all the work while Ss were passive learners. What this T could have done with #sketchnotes#edugladiators
Completely agree -- this is more than tech, but as an educator observing them it is often easier to see this pattern come through their tech usage. #EduGladiators
A2. It is not shiny but it is effective...I have students share #GoogleKeep summaries w/ me @ the end of the period. After I check/give quick feedback, I change the background color so they know that I read it. I change it to orange if there is a misunderstanding
#edugladiators
What a great point this is John. The application within a formal educational setting, but also an application that students can leverage in a lifelong, career setting to advance whatever vocations they seek for years to come. #EduGladiators
A3: Everyday I see students all over our campus (outside, in the hallways, on the grass, even in the neighborhood) creating videos for class to show their knowledge and understanding. Get Ss outside to create! #EduGladiators
A3. Learning can happen anytime, anywhere- so our schools need to have flexible space and WiFi capability. We must redesign what learning looks like. #edugladiators
A3: our classroomsare designed with collaboration in mind. My teachers also have station areas setup around their rooms where Ss move to develop specific skills around the room. Rooms are buzzing with conversation and collaboration between Ss. #EduGladiators
A2. Anytime Ss are able to apply what they have learned or create something new is higher order thinking/understanding. Using tech Ss can create digital books/stories they can create apps related to math lessons etc. the key is for Ss to apply & create #EduGladiators
Yes Paul, relevancy is the point, and you point out something that is essential. The relevancy has to originate with students in mind first not the adults. That's a crucial element to authentic student-centered learning. #EduGladiators
A3) Have many lamps (do not use over head lights), green screen commands one the wall, tables set up on different configurations & are moveable. #EduGLadiators
A3: Our first step has been incorporating furniture where everything is on wheels. So many uses and configurations have been seen already in the first month. #EduGladiators
A4) Have students ask good personal questions that encourage them to consider what they want to learn about texts or topics. Have them research, examine, & investigate the response. Then share what they have learned with the class. #EduGladiators

A3: spaces is also time- flexmod schedule is a key redesign! Redesign w/ standards based grading k-12 the space to LEARN rather than grade = awesome! Of course flex seats & choice of classrooms is good too, but don’t limit this to tradition! #EduGladiators
My worry is always that we are moving kids to reach a high bar in their learning and I fear in any model, student centered or more traditional, we do not keep that bar high enough for ALL students. #EduGladiators
That was a huge thing for us, too. It’s important to spend a little extra cash to get solid wheels, too. If students are going to be moving the space, we need to make it as easy as possible for them.
#EduGladiators
A3: Our first step has been incorporating furniture where everything is on wheels. So many uses and configurations have been seen already in the first month. #EduGladiators
Thank you Dennis for this! Particularly the insight with valuing student gifts is important for obvious academic reasons, but what we may not be as mindful of always, is that valuing student gifts is inherently an affirmation of the student. This is SEL. #EduGladiators
A3.b: We also have been blessed with a new commons area next to our learning space, so my #PBL students have not been shy about embracing that space as well. #edugladiators
Something I am reflecting on this morning - would Ts be more likely to engage in student centered learning if districts engaged in teacher centered learning for PD? #EduGladiators
A3.2: Technology is integrated throughout the class rotations from K thru 5th grade. Tech work is purposeful and meaningful...not a glorified worksheet! #EduGladiators
A4: One of my favorite ways is creating scavenger hunt activities where students become “social detectives” @Dleonard413 as they explore newly learned skills and concepts beyond the artificial boundaries of the classroom environment. #EduGladiators
A4. We are striving to be “connected learners” and provide ways for MS kids to learn from professionals thru Skype, other MS kids thru blogs and authentic experiences of solving problems within the community. #edugladiators
A3: The best classroom designs come from our students. Allowing them to design the learning space and giving them opportunities to reflect on what works and what doesn’t builds independence and develops self-efficacy. #edugladiators
A3) here is my new design, my students created “sound studios.” The echo in my room is horrible. These boxes allow them to listen and record without background noise or echo, they have also increased foucs. #EduGladiators
A4: I like pulling student experts into collaborative groups to mentor each other in ways they did not previously see. The help they need can come from me, sure, but I'm only one experience. Spontaneous grouping/partnering works wonders.
#edugladiators#getoutoftheway
A3: This a charging bar in my classroom. Students came up with this idea. Technology may change but most of it requires power. Students take ownership of the design of the classroom and it gets better to suit the tech needs of the kids. #EduGladiators

One way I try to do that is through continuous conversations about what employers are needing and discussions on how they can stand out. #EduGladiators
Q4. Genuine SCL takes place in adult workplaces, where employees (individually & as groups) make specific requests & advances in their own development. (I do Q whether this *really* happens in grade schools.)
#edugladiators
Even though our chat ends soon, I'm going to ask you to keep posting about student centered learning and new spaces on this chat - lets keep a great focus here for others in need of resources and a jumpstart
#EduGladiators
This is awesome. Capturing those brief moments or "stop and jots" is so important because it captures those moments of genius and brilliance that students have in real time. Yes we all reflect and arrive at conclusions later, but this also captures it in real time. #EduGladiators
A4: COMMUNITY learning! Invite learning @ community centers for family engagement! We are toying w/ monthly days off & classrooms @ churches, Main Street business, virtual ideas. Learning & Teavhing happens EVERYWHERE! #EduGladiators
A4: We need to keep that balance in a 1:1 too. Require Ss to demo their understanding 'tech free' is welcomed by them. Create a short skit, draw a political cartoon, have a debate. Ss hear choice today & they think "Google Slides or iMovie". #edugladiators
A4: Alllow students to shadow local businesses and go out in the community. The best learning is Hands-On and if they're out in the community they can find opportunities to help others and learn from the world around them. #EduGladiators

Vernon, SEL is not just a curriculum you teach. SEL is derived from having the empathy to understand how someone that is different from you feels. Not only are you accepting of that difference you are willing to learn and grow from them. #EduGladiators
A4: The 5 C’s scream student centered learning! Specifically allowing Ss time to collaborate and discover the importance of communication move the needle from teacher to student. Ss centered learning should work to prep Ss for life after school, the skills do that #EduGladiators
a3: #edugladiators After a few tries, I think that I got my workspaces right: Multiple options for collaboration w/ or w/o tech. Standards & objectives posted daily, comfy chairs for productive/collaborative students, #Rubickscubes for #brainbreaks, and lots of visuals, & music
This is another great point. If passion is the key with us adults in being the driving force in what we seek as our paths in learning, then why should we not make that available to students also? Aristotle was right... Ethos... Logos... and Pathos. #EduGladiators
At a conference once where a session was on classroom design. They had given Ss an opportunity to design classrooms & the same with Ts.The differences were mind blowing. We talk about collaboration—time to engage Ss in the process of designing learning environments. #EduGladiators
Thank you @mccoyderek for an #EduGladiators chat on a topic that can change learning for all students. Have to reheat my coffee & start reading all I have missed.
If the learning community of a school embraces student centered learning for the students, the learning community needs to reflect on their role in the learning.#EduGladiators
Differentiation, differentiation, you have a bar for each student. Build relationships, know you students and create an environment they feel safe and challenge the status quo. Have more than one bar per student, students create their own goals. #EduGladiators
Great job to my friend, #CoreWarrior@mccoyderek for leading #EduGladiators this morning. Can not wait to connect and update you on a few ideas we discussed.
Thinking there is value in students understanding teacher needs as well as the other way around. Could turn into some powerful conversations. #EduGladiators
School would have been a much different experience for me if this was a thing when we were kids. As much as I love learning now, people are surprised that I wasn't a great student when I was young. #EduGladiators
A3. Especially at the HS level, Ss should have classes in established tech companies such as TX Instruments also we should convert classrooms to look more like the tech industry so that there is a small learning curve for our Ss when they seek careers in tech. #EduGladiators
I like that John, and it illustrates how great teachers, sometimes without realizing it, always prioritize a rich dialogue with students daily around the learning. Even getting students to talk about the learning is a step towards student-centered learning. #EduGladiators
I survived Chicago Public Schools as a kid (where our desks were bolted to the floor in rows) and love living, learning, teaching in an era of such change in education.
Thanks, #EduGladiators

I'm digging that "challenge the status quo" aspect Colleen! Our students need those skills as future leaders to advocate for their communities. #EduGladiators
A1: Stu-centered learning is when Ss take the wheel! They choose & research topics to discuss, design lessons to teach peers, and use their own knowledge & interests to guide learning! I tell my Ss they are the Ts, I am there to facilitate, guide, & support. #EduGladiators
I'm digging that activity Cristobal as it shows, especially for visual learners of all ages, the differences in what students see of value and what adults see of value with respect to learning design, spaces, and the environment in total. #EduGladiators
A4: SCL can occur when given student-autonomy that drives instruction. Also, being involved in #ServiceLearningProjects & the community can facilitate Ss as leaders. Ss need to have choices to increase interest & ability & to be in charge of their own learning. #EduGladiators
A4 I was reluctant to give full #20percenttime, but I have learned that once they get crystal clear on vision, elevator speeches, etc, I can "velcro" a bunch of "my" original assignments to their passions...which makes the tasks more meaningful. #edugladiators
#EduGladiators / Bob McNair who is the first to say what is the problem by devastating his feelings on the world series, and the numbers he makes have gotten ridiculous.
#EduGladiators A1- my classroom as well as my school are all Ss based - so it’s hard to choose an example. My favorite example this week was a show we performed that was created by the Ss to culminate our learning across all curriculum areas - it was great! @RSScrew@m_m_england
You made and continue to make the difference Kym. They've always as students had voices and perspectives. You made it happen for them to be heard...Much respect and many kudos, and that's real. #ThatsImpactTheWrightWay#EduGladiators
I love it, and here's why: What we might see as "off the wall" today might be the genesis of innovation tomorrow. It definitely serves many purposes, one being the opportunity for adults to reflect on what education "looks like" everyday in schools across America. #EduGladiators
A3: Provide a space that Ss feel welcome & comfortable. Both physically & emotionally. This will help Ss take the risks in their learning that will help to create a SCL environment. Be considerate of S needs in an environment: color, seating, lighting, etc. #EduGladiators
