Fred, math mentor teacher, ed consultant & TTOC in Richmond. Ready for a jumpy, slow #bcedchat during another Oscars. I promise not to selfie during it.
I was going to mindfully be about four minutes late with the “welcome” tweet to test peoples self-regulation….but...
Welcome to #bcedchat. The topic today is Mental Wellness check-in
#bcedchat
Even with double the characters, I couldn't list my interests in a tweet so I'll just say they are capacious & diverse. They also help keep me well.
#bcedchat. Sorry won’t be making it tonight. Only just leaving my parents house in maple ridge and on my way back to Vancouver. Can’t text and drive. 😊
#bcedchat

Sorry for my lack of focus ... Half watching & following oscars. I'm in student services at an elementary school in Port Moody and I'm the CTA's TTOC committee chair. #BCedchat
Almost like a recording on an answering service, probably don’t need to say it, but…
We will be using the Q1, A1 format. Please label your responses and use the hashtag #bcedchat
Stella, from Victoria, teaching grade 1/2, enjoying delving deeply into play based learning and reading @technolandy's blog. Also watching Oscars. #bcedchat
Q1: Share a GIF that reflects you tonight as we approach one of the hardest weeks in education (day 113 is annually a toughie based on my blog -Monday is day 112....) #bcedchat
A1 after a mix of school closure and pro-d days, it was nice to have a “regular week” oh yeah and music festival and talent shows and and and #bcedchat and pink shirt Wednesday...
Yep - Ive got my pink tie ready for tomorrow, my pink bowtie ready for #bowtietuesday and then our school designed #pinkshirt ready for the official day! #bcedchat
A2 I am still happy that sundays are no longer “ Im sick” nights for my anxious/autistic son and that my oldest girl is 1/2 way through her coop and my youngest girl won in soccer. Nice when others are doing well! Fills my bucket! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2: have enjoyed leading a lot of workshops lately on 'doing & seeing' math, making math speak. Loved participants using the f-word, FUN while doing math.
Health failures could set this back. I've a friend in palliative care & wife's got a flu.
A2: I am just had a wonderful week off of classes with my family, which gave me some time to relax, catch up on classes and have some much needed family time! Trying to keep a positive mindset going into my last 2 months of year 2! #BCedchat
A2 my “balance” was seeing too many familiar faces in the hospital when I was there (I had forgotten a prescription renewal and our walk-in clinic is the hospital) hoping for a low-TTOC monday! #bcedchat
A2: I’m actually thankful for my staff for being risk takers and trusting me with a “vision” I often have for my school. Even better when things work out as planned. #bcedchat
#bcedchat Saw Q2 in my home feed before my #bcedchat Tweetdeck column. Saw @technolandy 's A2 in the column but the Q2 didn't ever appear? Jumpy, jumpy!
Now I’m going to be guiding us into some “self regulation” strategies many others use… and Ill tie it in to what many have on in the background… #bcedchat
Recently, I have been feeling really good! I love being active and find it can be a huge mood booster. As a student, I try and squeeze in physical activity into my busy schedule. After, I always feel refreshed and energized! Ready to get back to hitting the books! #bcedchat
A2 I am doing my staff meetings via Office Teams and I think I’m ready for tomorrow.👍🏽
Soccer for the kids coming back after a long snow hiatus and it is going to be challenging. 👎🏽#bcedchat
Q3: Go-to Movie/tv series that has helped you “Netflix and chill-ax” (keep it pg folks) and regulate #bcedchat
(yeah yeah, its the oscars but some TV series are movie-caliber in this golden age of visual media!)
A1: Recently, I have been feeling really good! I love being active and find it can be a huge mood booster. As a student, I try and squeeze in physical activity into my busy schedule. After, I always feel refreshed and energized! Ready to get back to hitting the books! #bcedchat
A2 Because I just got back from presenting at the COTA ProD, I am feeling good about the interest generated in my sessions on using a mental health approach with at-risk youth. #bcedchat
This is my 5th year as a teacher, and I feel like the changes I've made this year are so significant they will radiate out to the betterment of my room, my school, & my district. It's precarious though. I got my first of two medical bills that will be $200,000 each. #bcedchat
I may have moved some of the questions around....kind of why I don’t print out my presentations ahead of time
*card subject to change
Aka @technolandy running #bcedchat
A2: something we’re thankful for? I was part of @CIVIX_Canada democracy boot camp last Thursday and Fri. Was amazing!! So excited to do @studentvote again for fed elxn #BCEdChat
A2 the snowfall has helped my slow down and have time to play games with the kids (no soccer X3). Taking time to play with patterning in math - enjoying the hands on learning and discussions we are having. Frazled with report writnig... #bcedchat
one of the ultimate Reality Shows - Brier Next and then NCAA March Madness! ultimate summative assessment - like the highlander “there can be only one!"
#bcedchat
A2: Starting a new exercise programme tomorrow which I am really looking forward to. It is going to be long week because I need to type report cards. #bcedchat
This is when I remind people (because as I pointed out in my blog - this is the hardest week in the education calendar - at least in BC with Tuesday being the predicted apex) Quality over Quantity. Always.
#bcedchat#slowdown
A3: I’ve been rewatching the West Wing lately and listening to @WestWingWeekly podcast on my commute. Dreaming of a wise, empathetic, competent president ;-) #bcedchat
Pushing on…are you in tune with what the kids today are listening to? Or are you repeating what we heard as kids “that ain’t music…back in my day, we had…."
#bcedchat
A3: I am currently watching the Friends series for the 5th time! It's my guilty pleasure for sure! I also love listening to education podcasts such as @coolcatteacher and @nearpod! #BCedchat
OMG - have you made a cheesecake in it!?! We cannot get enough of it - it has replaced the coveted DQ Ice Cream Cake as the “Landy Family Birthday Cake” now that we are halfway through our birthday series - SO GOOD we bought a second pot!!
#bcedchat
A3 Real stress release comes when I can jump in the car and spend a couple of hours at the ocean. When that isn't available, blasting a few demons in a video game is fun too. #bcedchat
I think being an education student helps me stay in tune to what students are listening to because I listen to similar music. Sometimes I get confused by the new terminology though. #BCEdChat
Pushing on…are you in tune with what the kids today are listening to? Or are you repeating what we heard as kids “that ain’t music…back in my day, we had…."
#bcedchat
A4: I went to a hockey game last night and some of the excited kids got BABY SHARK stuck in my head! I know this is extremely popular right now. #bcedchat
#bcedchat Hilarious! I've been prepping for a fun night with the adults at church. I'm in a Barbershop Sextet: Songs in my head: Daisy, DaisyKing of the Road; Baby Face; Ain't Got a Barrel of Money; Ain't She Sweet; and Cotton Fields
I'm not sure #bcedchat peeps even get these?
I have been loving Sunflower from the Spiderverse movie (should’ve won best movie overall) I know some hate the music today, but it reminds me of the 50s where a Hit is a Hit and an album is interesting - circular nature impacting music? #bcedchat
A4) Because my father listens to the strangest stuff, and I heard this one a lot growing up, I now listen to it way too much. I sourced a first pressing of the LP for my record player at home just to hear it the way I heard it growing up. #bcedchathttps://t.co/3QJwRS7vBk
I loved hearing that my grade 3/4 teachers band (legit band of teachers near retirement) are learning Shallows for their set. Good music even today! #bcedchat
A2: In my world, I feel confident about my sleep schedule and the amount I am getting each night. It has been an improvement in the past. As a balance, one thing that will disrupt my world is procrastination. #GEN2108#bcedchat
Q5: Whatcha reading? Gotta read to lead...are you liking it? I’m enjoying da Vinci by Isaacson but not as much as his book on Jobs.... #bcedchat
(sorry -earlier cut and paste missed the #)
A2: We had a great weekend that included Science World, reading and a pillow fort- lots of time with the kids. Still have a bit of work to do this evening so will multitask while watching a movie. #bcedchat
A5: I hate to say it but I haven't had the chance to get into any personal reading lately...so many assigned readings for classes that it really makes it difficult. Summer is where I catch up on lost time for sure! #BCedchat
Joining late - Sean, principal in Langley. Now, #bcedchat A4 - ear worm is always the last incomplete song I hear - sticks until I see it through. At the moment, local fella, Dan Mangan - In The Summer https://t.co/LrtSP1ezAu
#bcedchat A5: For leisure the Chains of Honor (Lindsay Buroker) series
For ProD: Becoming the Teacher You Wish You Had (Tracy Zager) & some Jo Boaler books
Yep - thats always a problem - I started posting the covers of what i read in the hallway to make sure I do balance professional and personal reading (plus I read a lot through twitter and wordpress that connects to ongoing learning) #bcedchat
I have just finished "My Year of Running Dangerously: A Dad, a Daughter, and a Ridiculous Plan" by @tomforemancnn It is a beautiful book. It is more about family than running and a wonderful read. #bcedchat
As I pointed out in my blog, this is the time of year where everyone gets some blahs (and bill reminders…) and some things aren’t working as well as they have once worked… #bcedchat
A5: Just finished reading "The Double Helix" after watching the documentary "Decoding Watson". Very entertaining & informative about controversial figure in science history.
https://t.co/ZDKuTZV6yo#BCedchat
My go-to show right now is Marvel: Agents of SHEILD. This show has been part of the reasons I procrastinate so much but it is very interesting. #GEN2108#bcedchat
I have Softening the Edges, a book on assessment, in my school bag to start reading this week. Slowly making my way through Michelle Obama’s book too. #bcedchat
A3: My go-to show right now is Marvel: Agents of SHEILD. This show has been part of the reasons I procrastinate so much but it is very interesting. #GEN2108#bcedchat
#bcedchat A5 - ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’ and Esi Edugyan’s ‘Washington Black’ both on the go. Plus some Jo Boaler math books, but not reading those in order.
A6: I’m finding some are reaching my sons “patience” (or lack thereof) for slow breathing reminders: “i am Fn breathing, otherwise I’d be dead” (and he didn’t say Fn) #bcedchat
A6 Self regulating through reading and playing video games isn’t as effective I find when the weather starts to get better. When it’s sunny, feels like it’s a waste to hole up inside. So at this time of year I start to read outside or go for more walks. #BCEdChat
A6: For me, self regulation often comes in the form of physical activity or "body breaks"! I find that even going for a walk helps me put things into perspective and recharge! #BCedchat
A7 I’m not giving up on breathing, but am going to try a “new” process I stumbled upon tomorrow with my “Eagles” (the kids who are regularly in my office) 5 seconds breathing in, 5 seconds out, for five minutes
#bcedchat
apparently its a good reset for the system
A6 Two self-regulators that really help are golf and the ocean and both have been pretty unavailable because of the weather. The networking at the live #bcedchat event and the ProD did help a lot though.
A4: My daughter listened to "Try Everything" by Shakira more times than I count this afternoon while dancing and drawing. #bcedchat At least we have progressed past "Can't stop the feeling"
A7: One of the self regulations that I use when I begin to feel overwhelmed is thinking about my own "happy place" and identifying things I can touch, feel, see, hear, and smell. #bcedchat
A6: I tend to be pretty stressed on a Saturday. It takes me 24hrs to relax from everything that is going on at school. Despite all the self-regulation techniques I can't seem to relax. #bcedchat
A6: I used to love to cycle to work, in nice weather. Since having my daughter I want to get back on my bike, but am so scared of getting hurt or worse. Too many awful stories of crashes where cyclist loses. #bcedchat
A7 I’m going to start a plan to limit my phone use. I like the weekly remiders of how much I have used my phone, but now I’m going to keep it away from me so I have to make an effort to take a look at it. #BCEdChat
Apparent Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins had grave reservations about Watson’s book, and nearly stopped its publication. https://t.co/fEhaLrTjTn#BCedchat
A5: Just finished reading "The Double Helix" after watching the documentary "Decoding Watson". Very entertaining & informative about controversial figure in science history.
https://t.co/ZDKuTZV6yo#BCedchat
Okay - too many people said that they were too busy reading texts or professional books to bother with personal reading choices, so…. come across good quotes? #bcedchat
A5: I have a few at the moment #bcedchat
For education- "The Art of Coaching Teams" by Elena Aguilar
For book club- "Educated" by Tara Westover
For my kids- Geronimo Stilton
#bcedchat A7: I've also been reading/hearing a lot about blue light disrupting sleep rhythms; thinking about utilizing orange lens in the evenings and shutting down more than an hour from sleep.
A4: Some Disney songs are hits that I don't understand, but as a 20-year-old I like a wide range of music from the Beatles to 90s grunge rock and today's hip hop music. #GEN2108#bcedchat
I don’t mind sharing that because of my @Apple Watch Ive had to buy some new pants as my “regular ones” were too baggy! I hated buying new ones but am happy with the smaller sizes! #bcedchat movement matters!
#bcedchat A7: I've just had my second #UrbanPoling walk and I think it is definitely making a difference in speed walking, hip/knee protection & full body work out.
A6 #bcedchat - like many of the other esteemed contributors, exercise isn’t working so well when the weather gives me so many excuses to hold the couch down. Decay in performance reduces motivation which hurts performance. In good weather, biking does the job, though.
THIS! Complaint of one of my regular office pop-ins is that it isn’t fun in the class (it usually is when he gets redirected, but he doesn’t think he’s going to like it until he does) #bcedchat
A8 Life is like a camera. Focus on whats important...Capture the good times. Develop from the negative. And if things don't work out take another shot. #bcedchat
Okay - since many of you have talked around what was going to be Q9 - Im going to change it up
It WAS going to be:
Q9: What are you and those around you doing for some physical regulation in this traditionally hibernation-ish time of year? #bcedchat
A8 Life is like a camera. Focus on whats important...Capture the good times. Develop from the negative. And if things don't work out take another shot. #bcedchat
A8 Life is like a camera. Focus on whats important...Capture the good times. Develop from the negative. And if things don't work out take another shot. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A7: I've also been reading/hearing a lot about blue light disrupting sleep rhythms; thinking about utilizing orange lens in the evenings and shutting down more than an hour from sleep.
A7 #bcedchat - using the screen time data in iOs to remind myself to shut off. Also have added running with a colleague from school to force the exercise ‘program’ back on track. Signed up for an event to add some ‘accountability,’ too, as that has worked in the past.
At the very least you need to have the device shift into Night Mode - even if you (like me) do a lot of asynchronous work aka working late and early and whenever
#bcedchat
#bcedchat A7: I've also been reading/hearing a lot about blue light disrupting sleep rhythms; thinking about utilizing orange lens in the evenings and shutting down more than an hour from sleep.
A9: when I see someone who is struggling with regulation I do what I can to let them know that they aren't alone and that everyone experiences these struggles every now and then! It isn't about the struggles, it's about how we overcome them! #BCedchat
Q9 I have been known to take over their class so they can take a coffee break or just a walk. Teacher time outs rock to give you a chance to get back to the happy place.#BCEdChat
A9: Just chat and say my door is always open. Being a "seasoned" teacher it is easy to talk about the ebb and flow of the school year. Things will get easier to handle. Spring break is coming. #bcedchat
I read the “tone” of the school prior to our staff meeting last week and augmented the veggies and fruit with some cheezies and chocolate pretzels (coulda brought out more chocolate…) #bcedchat
A9: Chatting with a friend or colleague or asking them to go to lunch or coffee or spend time together is my way of helping someone who is struggling. Sometimes all people need is someone to listen to them. #BCEdChat
A6- For me sleep is so important. My kids both wake up almost every night so I am more tired than I would like. So it isn't that the strategy isn't working my children just aren't yet on board #bcedchat
A8: Every year students ask me what I want for a year end gift. I always reply with the same thing. 'If ever you see me in the future, no matter what I'm doing, come say hello, reintroduce yourself and tell me about your awesome life. It's all I'll ever need.' #BCedchat
A10 one of my favourite gifs recently when people talk about phones and tablets being distractions (but don’t object to those using paper tablets for distractions) #bcedchat
