The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.
Good evening #ONEdChat ! @mrisaacmoore is broadcasting from the #teachlikegord account for the purposes of this discussion tonight. I am looking very forward to exploring these questions with you all!
#ONedchat To me #TeachlikeGord means celebrating Canada for everything wonderful it has to offer but also recognizing it isn't perfect and wanting to make it even better.
For us, the philosophy of #teachlikegord extends past @thehipdotcom music and lyrics - though those are amazing teaching tools on their own. Gord's vision for Canada and the tools he gave us to identify as BETTER Canadians extend to all generations. #onedchat
Q1 #OnEdChat#ocsbdl#teachlikegord means sharing Gord Downie's stories with my students and celebrating how this Canadian was so inspirational in the face of his illness, wanting his last project to make our world a better place.

...and the important thing to remember is that collectively Canadian teachers stand on a very large stage EVERYDAY in front of Canada's future! #ONedchat#TeachlikeGord
Driven by passion, heart and doing the right thing! Gord showed us that anyone can offer their point of view and educate an audience no matter your platform. A stage, a classroom if you have people listening your making a difference. Gord had all of Canada listening. 🇨🇦

A1 - to #teachlikegord one must embrace our identity, culture and history as Canadians. Celebrate the good and learn from the bad through multiple perspectives and points of view #ONedchat

Q1: To the junior division at @lukecarleton Elementary in Barrhaven #TeachlikeGord movement meant an amazing opportunity to share an inspiring Canadian icon with our students while developing their understanding of reconciliation. #ocsbdl#OnEdChat

A2: This great CBC interactive map, based on The Tragically Hip's songs helps to bring some meaning to various communities in Canada. https://t.co/KHjHGYmUlJ#ONedchat
A3. Ford and #thehip brought us obscure stories that lots of Canadians didn't know. None more important than Chanie Wenjack's story. #ONedchat#teachlikegord
A2 We listened to early Hip songs to introduce Gord Downie and then listed to Secret Path while reading the graphic novel and discussing the imagery. My Gr. 6s were very insightful and had so many questions. The music really set the tone and added to the experience. #OnEdChat

Agreed- they took obscure stories and wove them into the fabric of our Canadian identity because he/they told truths others did not tell or perspectives that weren’t otherwise shared #ONedchat

A3 - Gord gave a voice to the voiceless through his music and work with reconciliation. He also exuded pride for all things Canadian. There is a lot out Ss can unpack from listening to his music and reading his lyrics. #ONedchat#teachlikegord

#Onedchat Q4 Gord spent the later part of his life championing reconciliation through his collaborative project entitled ‘Secret Path’. What can we do to bring this resource, and others, to our students in an effort to truly reconcile the people of this land? #teachlikegord
Q3 He taught me in the midst of tragedy surround yourself with happiness and love. The love of music, family, friends and Canada. That’s what grateful looks like. Gord was grateful and aware and it showed. #ONedchat#TeachlikeGord
#ONedchat I have the Hip playing as calming music after recess for my 6's. I play it softly as my S's read or colour to help them regulate after what can be a hectic or exciting time. This has exposed many S's to songs they had never heard before. #ocsbdl
Q4 we can intrgrate #secretpath through various disciplines(art, Lang, soc studies) and it blends itself seemlessly. Great way to hook ss into #fnmi studies #ONedchat
"That's what grateful looks like". Absolutely. Couldn't have said it better myself. Gord embodied an #attitudeofgratitude but was never satisfied with the status quo. Happy with what he had, but always moving forward. Always learning. #onedchat
#ONedchat A4 We need to keep talking about racist Gov't policies, the experience of IRS and the ongoing impact on Indigenous community. Canadians need to know the true history in order to begin to understand their role in reconciliation.
A4: Here is a @padlet that I have put together to help gather lesson ideas to use The Secret Path in the classroom.

A4 I think the most important thing we as educators need to do around Secret Path is to build awareness in our students. The next generation cannot bring about change if they are unaware. #ocsbDL#OnEdChat
#ONedchat Gord said it would take 150 years to establish a better "cooler" Canada that he wished for and envisioned. I believe if ALL #TeachlikeGord his dream will become a reality much sooner!

Q3: Gord has taught me anyone can inspire hope, as his songs and writings have done so in the lives of many. He has shown me that through igniting the imagination of my S's I can help contribute to making a better future. #ocsbdl

#Onedchat Q5 Gord was a proud Canadian and harsh, but meaningful critic. How did Gord help push Canadian educators to do better, be better, and move our country forward in a positive, collaborative way? #TeachlikeGord
Also I'm Laura Logan grade 6 teacher @lukecarleton and lover of the hip. I grew up enjoying their music and have been to many concerts. I love this opportunity to share their songs and messages, especially Gord's desire for reconciliation, w others.

Particularly the Secret Path. I (@cherandpete ) also use a book called "Fatty Legs" gives a 8 yo girls perspective of residential schools in the Canadian arctic. #ONedchat
I believe that we should use the first voice as much as possible. Gord provided a platform for those voices to be used and heard by those who might be most uncomfortable or unsure.

I think that's the key. Forward, together. Too much history has been about segregation. A collaborative, respectful approach to reconciliation in schools. No more silence. #OnEdChat
#ONedchat A5 I think Gord and his family were meant to connect with Anishinaabe community. He was strong and blunt- so are Chanie's sisters! Their presence and strength ensures that their story isn't appropriated or disrespected. #teachlikegord
A5: Gord and now the #teachlikegord movement has given us the awareness and drive to create meaningful lessons that highlight truth and reconciliation and brought to light the need for us as Canadians to do more. #ONedchat#ocsbdl
#ONedchat#teachlikegord we need to keep talking about racism towards Indigenous people in Canada-educating all Canadians about history and current issues and events. As educators, we also need to come from a place of kindness and respect.
A6 #teachlikegord has to be just the beginning of the conversation. Students want to make Canada a better place, we need to continue to share Chanie's story and speak of Reconciliation so they can create a better Canada for all of us! #OnEdChat
Studying the Secret Path with my students has successfully inspired my students to do more, be better and educate themselves further. It is a train that once started, won't be stopped. #teachlikegord will span generations. #onedchat
A6 share our practice and ss learning with others in and outside our community. Hopefully our ss will transfer their learning in creative ways. #ONedchat
A3 - Gord echoed a voice that was not always heard through his music and work with reconciliation. He reminded us where we were/are and how much further we need to go. There is a lot out Ss learn about our Canadian identity by reading his lyrics. #ONedchat

The #teachlikegord campaign was started as a chance to collaborate. No more complex than that. It was a way to start a conversation between teachers. We believe firmly now, that teachers need to do this MORE OFTEN. I have never been so inspired by my colleagues. #onedchat
#ONedchat Thank you ALL for joining us! Special thanks to @mrisaacmoore@joshgeddis for creating the #TeachlikeGord hashtag and initiating an important movement in Canadian education. Gord would be proud!
