This is a virtual version of me: Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. @SmartLab_tweets#STEM Facilitator. Saw our good friend, @LevineWrites, was co-moderating and could not miss. Either at practice or on the expressway driving home, trying to "get live" with #rethink_learning.
Hi everyone! #rethink_learning I'm Barbara and a creative learning strategist. I live in Oakland, CA and work every day to look for the positive sides of things. Just returned from Hawai'i with awesome educators. Here's a cool dot project the kids did at @thinkstandrews

Q1. Students come to us with all kinds of trauma from life. What methods do you use to cut through the trauma and create a positive experience for all learners? #rethink_learning
Q1. Students come to us with all kinds of trauma from life. What methods do you use to cut through the trauma and create a positive experience for all learners? #rethink_learning
A1: Students come to us needing so many things. We need to start with the authentic relationship with honest connections and positive conversations. #rethink_learning
A1: In dealing w/Ss with emotional baggage, I let them know, upfront, that I cannot solve their problem, but I will stand with them and run alongside of them as they navigate their way through their trauma. I make sure they are aware that I am always available. #rethink_learning
A1 - This all starts with modeling those words and actions that promote positive language and behaviors. For me this comes down to lots of smiles, affirmations, praise and actually talking with each teen. “Show me a happy teacher and I’ll show you a happy kid!” #rethink_learning
A1: step one is getting to know them, be open to listen & express interest even on small things-then you can provide learning opportunities that meet those interests/needs & build trust for them to share big things #rethink_learning
Yes, this --> @_on11 It is about us standing with them, running alongside as they make their way through the trauma. Love it. always available #rethink_learning

Woo hoo, Spencer! I've spent quite a bit of time at the Friday Institute and have visited your campus multiple times! Love seeing NC represent in these chats! #rethink_learning
A1: Each child responds differently to trauma and thus requires a different response in the classroom. I try to address kids privately who are having emotional outbursts. It's easy to yell; it's way harder to step back and try to understand.
#rethink_learning
A1: Build a strong trusting relationship with the student. Know when the student needs space and when they need encouragement. Seek out those who can give the student counseling or a deeper level of support! #rethink_learning
A1 I let Ss know that I am there to support them, and make sure that I work on building relationships, being present, listening to them, and being positive, smallest interactions make a big impact #rethink_learning

A1: I must first understand what trauma is, and how it effects people. Then, we need to get to really know the other person, and try to connect & support them. #rethink_learning
A2: 12 Ways to Build Positive Relationships https://t.co/d3yAAHCDYE It is all about the relationships we build and grow. The better the relationships are at school, the happier and more productive students and teachers will be. #rethink_learning#relationships#positivity
A2: Be intentional in creating #relationships! Every child needs at least one adult who believes in them. Take time to build the relationships first to reach their hearts before their minds. #empathy#Caring#rethink_learning
A2 - 7 Little things that we do each day make all the difference.
1. Don’t judge
2. Smile as they enter
3. Always find something good
4. Empathy over anger
5. Kindness over sarcasm
6. Call parents with a positive message
7. Tell them you care, and mean it. #rethink_learning
A2 Make time for us to all take some breaks in learning, by collaborating, I love starting class with random music to get Ss moving some, always focus on getting to know one another #rethink_learning
A2: I think negativity takes much more energy from you than #positivity- a) practice #growthmindset, b) don't sweat the small stuff, c) make learning fun (most of time), d) use appropriate humour, e) play games and show Ss your human side! #rethink_learning
A2: It all comes down to mindset. If I am not fired up about being here, how can I expect my Ss to be? On mornings when I'm coming in weighted down, I need to consciously "check my bags" before meeting the kids. Positivity has the power to shift the atmosphere. #rethink_learning
A2: Here are 6 Ways for Teachers to Spread Intentional Positivity. https://t.co/oKgPWHpp5A … Something happens to you when you focus on being positive. It changes you and your brain. #rethink_learning#positivity
A1: First, demonstrate it by your actions & encouragement, then insist that when students challenge each other, they do it respectfully. Model making mistakes and reacting positively-it makes my Ss more comfortable with them #rethink_learning
A2: Smile. Laugh. Celebrate small and big successes. Be positive to one another! Sometimes we give more grace to the students than we do to each other. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻#rethink_learning

A2: A Culture is not created overnight. It takes intentional action on our part to build positivity in all that we do in the classroom. It begins with us! #rethink_learning
A2: We can create school-wide initiatives in mindfulness. Have staff model the positive behaviours we are looking for. Celebrate often, and make the celebrations visible!#rethink_learning
Very true. Its also important to hold those students who experience trauma accountable for their behavior toward others. They get my full care, but it's vital that they understand they still must be kind toward others, no matter what is going on in life.
#rethink_learning
yes! Important to know that trauma impacts people in different ways and we have to really get to know them in terms of their experiences, values, and beliefs. Many cultures still view trauma as stigma. #rethink_learning -

A2: It’s about creating an entire positive culture: adult-to-child, child-to-child, AND adult-to-adult. If positivity is embedded everyday...it becomes the norm! However, it starts with the adult-to-adult! #Respect#Honesty#Integrity#Trust#rethink_learning@bbray27

A3: important to integrate it in your learning and through your curriculum - how can you create positive learning experiences that encourage Ss to develop habits of mind and become social change agents #rethink_learning
A2: I'm positive with a dash of 'real'. It doesn't work well with older students to pretend to be happy all the time. I share frustrations with them and let them see my humanness. I admit when I'm wrong and apologize, say "I don't know", and laugh with them.

A3 - My favorite mantra for students is “train your brain!” Most of the time we don’t spread adequate amounts of effort helping kids to make change. Learning how to reflect and use your mind/brain to push out negative energy is key. It’s amazing if you try it! #rethink_learning
A3: have Ss write in a gratitude journal, learn w/ Ss from other countries who might be less fortunate, and volunteer w/ local retirement homes, food banks, etc... #rethink_learning
A3: When we model what we want Ss to do, Ss will soon follow the lead. It's contagious. Once Ss experience the power of kindness and generosity of encouragement, they will find it difficult not to operate any other way. We need to make space for them to do this. #rethink_learning
A3 We definitely model the #positivity and just keep working with Ss, find out their interests, help them to find some passions to make learning more meaningful, feel more invested and excited for learning! #rethink_learning

A3: I truly believe that we get what we model. Modeling positivity, kindness, and gratitude encourages Ss to own their actions and show these same traits. #rethink_learning
A3: The best way to own it is to take action! Have students choose initiatives to better a cause, fill a need, make a difference in someone’s life. #rethink_learning
A3: The key is learning that so much of our own happiness depends on our reaction to things beyond our control. Being positive in that outlook and expecting best motives from others lets us be kind even when we might initially struggle with something. #rethink_learning

A1 #rethink_learning#gratitude#happy#joy I reach out to Ps at start of yr. letting them know I am there for Ss & ask Ps 2 reach out if they have concerns they wish 2 share. It helps 2 open doors so I can find out trauma early on & be watchful.

A3: From day one create a culture of “family” in your classroom. Treat students with respect and expect the same from your students. Some have never experienced this dynamic before. Reflect what you want to see! #rethink_learning
We need to be always mindful that we may be keeping the only place that our students feel safe...especially those going through silent trauma NOW! #rethink_learning

All of these questions define those skills and traits of outstanding educators. Those who teach with passion and energy are all about positivity and connections. It’s just who they are. #rethink_learning
A3: Wouldn't it be great if #kindness was something all of us start and end our day thinking of others? "We just might set the world in the right direction." #rethink_learning#positivity

Thank you to all the awesome educators and our guest host, @LevineWrites where everyone was so positive today in #rethink_learning - Hope you join me and @raspberryberet3 on Monday10/29/18 with our next topic, Magic!!
A2 #rethink_learning#gratitude#happy#joy Thinking abt words u use in advance is helpful. Broaching difficult subjects in proactive manner too. Rather than putting out fires, prepare in advance. B at door every day, with a smile & hello. Make connections each day!
A2 A collaborative culture of #positivity and deeper learning is what I am speaking on this year with the schools that I am working with. #Positivity is a change agent in schools. #rethink_learning
A3: I learn so much from my #PLN and in Twitter chats like #formativechat and #rethink_learning. I learn by taking risks, trying something new, and learning from you. Then we can model that for Ss so they can help each other to learn at high levels. #formativechat
A2: Greeting our students at the door, listening to the stories they really want to share, teaching students about the power of kind words like “please” and “thank you”, teaching about how actions speak louder than words. #rethink_learning
