#Edtechchat focuses on Education Technology. Co-founder Tom Murray says #edtechchat "connects us professionally with inspiring educators from all over the world, all of who encourage us to be better every day for the children and families we serve.”
Have to include Vader (original trilogy), Gru, Voldemort, Jaws, 🦖 (#JurassicWorld and #JurassicPark), Mother Nature in all disaster movies... #edtechchat
Is villain the same as people who piss me off? Teachers/ administrators who act as if #edtech#startups are “Just out for $ “/ the enemy when most of us were educators , quit secure jobs to do something we believe in and THEN ask us for $ to support their events #edtechchat
A2 - When trying to change/impact education, often have to speak truth to power. And until people stand behind you, often seen as the villain first. Need to be a smart villain, and work on those alliances from the start. #edtechchat
A2: Sometimes....a bit at the start of the year when I forced the staff to switch to a google doc for chromebook signup. #edtechchat change takes bold moves.
A2: Now, that school is winding down, I feel like a villain every day to my students. They seem to be losing interest due to nicer weather, but I feel I have to keep them in line or they won't do anymore work. #edtechchat
A2 As a middle school teacher I can feel like a villain or at least the "bad guy" to some of my students. They are at that age where they dare you to make them learn. It is difficult to find engaging lessons for every. single. day. #edtechchat
A1: When asking Ts "Why"? Not so much to question decisions, but to cause reflection on practices. Why do you give HW? Why do you have 150 MC quesitons on the final exam? Why can't kids have choice on how they demonstrate their learning? Why not flip that lesson? #edtechchat
A2 Let's go and be the villain - It is important to understand what you don't know, and not fall in love with the processes and state of knowledge you learned. #EdTechChat
A2 At times the villainous character of being an educator is needed to affect change. However, it is all about the mindset and how you go about turning the tide. #edtechchat
A2 At times. In my additional roles I am asked to think of new approaches in order to provide the best for Ss. Sometimes those suggestions go against the comfortable and least effective methods that have become habit. That gets the villain stamp from some. #edtechchat#darkcloud
A2: Yes sometimes I feel like I am the villain because my partner is the good cop/the easy going one, so I end up being the bad cop or the villain. I see the possible dangers that come from things that my partner does not always. #edtechchat
A2:
Special Education specialist so I become the villan w Ss when they arent working to their potential and with Ts when they are ignoring the federally recognized document governing the teaching of Ss on my caseload #edtechchat
Q2 Not really. I teach at a university when I’m not making @7GenGames & my Dept. Chair & students are amazing. We start game testing in remote mountain schools in #Chile in August & that is beyond awesome #edtechchat
A2: I don't think you have to be a villain to teach, although it might feel like it somedays when students are not doing what you want them too.. In regards to tech in a class or at a school have to be assertive and work together with staff to improve tech in school #edtechchat
...Thus remembering that even the worst of villains thrive on the building of relationships to be successful in their intent to influence others. #edtechchat
"most of us were educators , quit secure jobs to do something we believe in" For those, great. But, even there, are they addressing their needs, or the wider market needs? #EdTechChat
A2 sometimes I think it happens, or we are perceived as villians when taking a different stand, going in a different direction than what As or TS want, #edtechchat
Don’t know about them but @7GenGames has received funds from @usda (who we LOVE) to create apps to improve performance of rural students- maybe they have funding like that ? #Edtechchat
In reply to
@kallieberg25, @heathermlister, @7GenGames, @USDA
A3 - I don't know what my name would be, but it would have something to do with high standards. I've been told many times that my standards are too high. I think people are too use to a low bar. #edtechchat
"A shortage of teachers affects the quality of instruction that students receive in many ways, including teachers’ ability to use technology effectively." https://t.co/XCtLuE28ik#edtechchat#k12
A3 My villain name would be "Techavert" Why? Because sometimes meeting the learning needs of our Ss is not about the #edtech but how we infuse pedagogy into it to transfer the knowledge. #edtechchat
A4: I always try to see the issue from the "villain"'s perspective...why do they need something the way it is? Why are they pushing back? Then try to approach with care and empathy. #edtechchat
A4: Our villain isn't a person, it's our secretive discussions about issues. We need more of us to step up, be brave, and get the communication out in the open #edtechchat
A4 - Determine if they really are the villain, or if they've got a point behind what they're doing. Learning other's stories helps us connect and can bridge those divides. #edtechchat
A4: This is a tricky one, since I am a people pleaser and do not like confrontation. I would say that in the beginning I try to win them over and if that does not work, I try to stay out of their way...but if they are still rude I give them attitude back haha. #edtechchat
A latent need is still a market need. Just be careful not to overgeneralize your personal experience. Entrepreneurship and marketing (as in product market fit) are important pieces of the picture. #EdTechChat
A4 I would start by modeling what right looks like, walking the talk and setting the example for villains and other naysayers. Thus setting the tone for mindsets to change and over time villains could turn into heroes. #edtechchat

Hey #edtechchat - sorry I am late - cleaning up after #BBQ took longer than expected - Alex, #techdir from NJ - My villain name would be ... wait, I'm already the #techdir, not sure I need another name :)
I don't know much about this since I just finished up interning.. but I agree! Leadership is key and you must remain positive, engaging and talk it out! #edtechchat
A4 Being extra positive, not getting pulled into negativity, respectfully push back when needed, of course we can always work on building relationships too #edtechchat
A4: A great friend has advised me to "kill them with kindness." When people are ugly at you, and you envelope them in kindness, it can be a game changer. You are in charge of how you react to every situation. #edtechchat
A4 too often I find villains model the norm...run in packs.... perhaps to paraphrase, sometime the best way to change a villain is to change a villain... #edtechchat
A4: I try to find some point of connection or something they can get excited about and share the tool that enhances that. Sometimes I just have to be patient! #edtechchat
I would agree that we can always use the building of relationships as the catalyst needed to deal with difficult situations and personalities. Particularly when it comes to dealing with Ss, Ps, and other Ts. At the end of the day even villains need a friend. #edtechchat
Part of my, sometime unpopular, point is that telling the different is a learned skill that takes effort to recognize, acquire, and then to apply. #EdTechChat
A5: When we went 1:1 there were signs posted outside of some classrooms that said “No Chromebooks” 😤😫😖 I did have to really push some into tech integration. #edtechchat
A5: Cellphones. Don't support taking them away, but we have to model and teach Ss appropriate usage. Sometimes they need some gentle reminders to "put it away." Sometimes it means finding great ways to use them (#BookSnaps) #edtechchat
A5 - Privacy! To easy for companies to track you from website to website. Have to remind others in startups all the time to respect privacy. To anonymize and aggregate results. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. #edtechchat
A5 The egregious misuse of You Tube. I am all for video supporting learning and sparking creativity but kittens rolling with yarn will not deepen one's understanding of playground design. #edtechchat#BadGuy

Yes :) My response is usually that I taught my Spanish IV students how to use it, they were the class of 2000. My first ppt was on the Aztecs, it was like 24 slides and I needed 8 disks! #edtechchat
A5b: Shockingly to many teachers at my site....google hangouts. I love that my kids can "talk" across the room when playing Prodigy and they don't need to move seats. #edtechchat
A5b: The computer lab. Something always needs to be fixed and is always beeping. Why is that?? Why do desktops beep all the time? I would rather be on a iPad. #edtechchat
For elementary ed a lot of teachers have been using Seesaw (to communicate with parents, give students assignments) , XtraMath, Google Docs/Drive & Classroom. I wasn't at a placement that used much tech.. They did have Ipads, Chromebooks, and MacBook Airs! #edtechchat
A5b Chromebook, Google Drive, @RemindHQ, and a healthy dose of patience and understanding to listen to others (Ps, Ts, Ss) and find a compromise. Who said all villains are bad? #edtechchat
I like both. Laptops / iPads. depending on project. That said, computer labs should be replaed with makerspaces / robotics labs. (with enough laptops for testing...) #edtechchat
I recently was at a STEAM school doing an observation. The makerspace is awesome and great for having students to learn to inquire, ask questions, create new things, and work with other students! Interesting to think about replacing computer labs with makerspaces! #edtechchat
A6: Fortunately, the Hero always has #theroom. which is always smarter than the villain,, and will always outwit the villain, mostly due to the unnecessary villain monologue #edtechchat
A6 Super tools for a super edu villain? Twitter, to gather all those great ideas that lead to dastardly deeds. Padlet, to keep your ideas flowing. #edtechchat
A6 Google Fiber coupled with the power of optimism. The desire to overcome the barriers heroes place in front of them due to their goodwill nature. #edtechchat
I think it's worth it. (We haven't done that in my school). Every classroom should have a makerspace with more expensive tools being in the lab. Preferably located right off the library. #edtechchat
A6 - Any that lets you spy on what they're doing on their own screens. I don't recommend or support this. There's a video tool for remote workers, that takes a pic of each person at their desk every 30s. Not cool. & when you start a call, it starts the others video. #edtechchat
We did- Makerspace 2 years ago, and desktops leaving in a week. I prefer iPads and Dash and LEGO WeDo - digital breakouts are more collaborative on IPads #edtechchat
Good to hear. I'd go all iPad but there are a few things (typing skills, Google Earth Pro - Desktop, advanced iMovie, etc.) that I might want. #edtechchat
