Hey #DitchBook Scott from NJ! Tech Integration Specialist + extremely passionate about virtual field trips and utilizing Skype (or any video calls) in the classroom.
A1: it makes learners great authentic and relevant, and they’ll be engaged! If engage, ent isn’t taken mg place, no other learning will, either #DitchBook
A1: Talking or reading about a place is just words, as a social studies teacher by trade, sharing photos of places I've been or engaging with imagery in some way is much more meaningful #ditchbook
Some kids have never had an opportunity to see the world. Although we might not be able to say “oh, let’s visit these countries we are learning about” we can let them see the world through the internet and a virtual field trip! #ditchbook
A1: To me, it's the authentic learning the student receives. Allowing them to partake in a virtual field trip shows them places they may never visit on their own, plus could potentially inspire further learning and inquiry into the subject. #ditchbook
A1. #ditchbook they are more engaged. I just showed Ss setting to @Dusti_Bowling 24 hours to nowhere they we are reading and they had lots of questions about it because we’ve been reading about characters there.
A1: Huge. It helps with context. My first year teaching, I taught Roman Empire and had a kid who visited Rome that summer. I was able to draw upon his experience to help make it real for rest of class. I was jealous too. #ditchbook
When students can actually see and experience what they are learning about, it makes it so much more real. For example, we use Google Earth to look at battlefield sites. We also looked at Greece when we were learning about Greek mythology. It engages them! #DitchBook
A1: I also taught ancient history, east Asia history, and African history to 7th graders in Indiana...these places didn’t seem real to them unless we built that connection and empathy by taking them there virtually! #DitchBook

#DitchBook Hello my name is Emily Root, I am currently studying to become an early education teacher in Colorado, and my favorite vacation was going on a road trip from Oregon to Canada! #EDUC331
A1 Developmentally speaking, the younger the learner, the more concrete connections may help their brains make inroads into navigating abstract ideas. (I suspect this notion holds value for learners who may not be so young.) #ditchbook
A1 part II: When I've taught historical figures or events, pictures from my trips to places like the Truman Library, Lincoln Birthplace, or Little Bighorn sparked richer conversation than simply talking or pulling a pic from creative commons #ditchbook
A1- When students have the prerequisite knowledge from something they’ve authentically experienced, it is much easier to make further connections to new content. #DitchBook
#DitchBook A1 Students are engaged. Example: We use the movie Miracle to introduce the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team and the Cold War. We have had Mike Eruzione speak. To hear his story makes history come alive and gives meaning to learning. Can’t get that in a textbook!
A1 adults and students learn differently as we know, but the real world connection for students is similar to the adult learner's need to connect their thoughts to a topic. That added relevance to the topic is super important #ditchbook
A1: As a Language Arts teacher, my students' reading comprehension really struggles if they don't have background knowledge of where a story takes place. #ditchbook
A1b: Studying poverty and struggle is easy for kids to relate to. All 8 have to do is have them think of their recent trips to Mexico and they relate quickly. #DitchBook
A1 The reality is no matter how well we know our content, connecting with true experts/ seeing something “in real life vs in a textbook is much more impactful. I love that students can ask these experts their own questions 💥 #DitchBook
A1: It makes a big difference because students' minds "click" and they are able to see the picture. Also, it gets their attention immediately if they are able to connect to the idea #DitchBook#edfb4338
My top suggestion for virtual field trips:
https://t.co/mReWECzeov
Dozens of FREE virtual field trips to amazing locations. You'll never have a bad one.
Just click one to sign up. #DitchBook
A1: Late (again) but here! Anytime Ss can connect a "face" to a "place", that helps them connect the content with something their brain can internalize, manipulate, and recall. It cements that, Not only does learning happen, but love of learning can be a side product. #ditchbook
A2: IS there anything better than or equal to Google Expeditions? Oooh, what about Hangouts or Skypes on location with connections who live or work at amazing places? #Ditchbook
A2: I really like to use #googleexpeditions whenever I do a virtual field trip. I've begun to look into @ThingLink as an option as well (not sure how it will go). #ditchbook
A2: Google Earth is a great tool. I love it. Until a student wants to find their house. ;-) I also use YouTube videos sometimes, like when we wrote a pamphlet for Disney's Safari ride. We went on the ride through a video. Zoo websites are great. #DitchBook
Check out this FREE virtual field trip by Discovery Education ...
Cars of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Automated Vehicles.
Looks amazing! Heard this from @halldavidson at #ICEIndiana today.

A2 My go-to is the Microsoft Educator Community (https://t.co/3H3hYVk4i4) There’s so many great trips to choose from!! I also encourage teachers to just email ANYONE they want to connect their students with. #DitchBook#SkypeMT
A1: The world we live in should not be as "BIG" as it was when we were younger. Even my little girl loves to travel right from our own living room! When used in meaningful ways it can create powerfull and lasting experiences! #DitchBook
A2: shameless plug time - in WeVideo!
But seriously - Google Earth soooo amazing. Also their expeditions - which I saw at ISTE last year. Really fun.
#ditchbook
I love Google expeditions and all the zoo virtual field trips make my heart happy!! I would love to find some children’s museum virtual field trips!! #ditchbook
#DitchBook A2 Twitter, Email and websites. Over the past two weeks, I have made many connections through contact sections of websites. Explain the concept of your class and what their role would be and most people are willing to help.
A2 the best classroom connections come from a growing #pln. A huge fringe benefit of making connections professionally is the benefit for connecting your classroom via those contacts. But sources like @Flipgrid#gridpals and @SkypeClassroom are no brainers #ditchbook
Here's a crazy idea ...
On-demand, instant virtual field trip:
Use Google Maps Street VIew.
https://t.co/f2EeMb7Ksr and drag the little yellow guy onto the screen.
#DitchBook
A2 LOVE Google street view on Chromebooks! Explore world landmarks, discover natural wonders, and step inside locations such as museums, arenas, parks and transport hubs.
https://t.co/HY2oI6DsgJ#ditchbook
Yes, that sounds like an excellent idea. Taking students through a virtual field trip helps students experience a language and culture. Most students don't have opportunities to travel around the world #DitchBook#edfb4338
A lot of museums host virtual field trips on their websites, The National World War II Museum has an amazing virtual trip on their website (and getting there IRL is even better, my wife and I picked our daughter's name after inspiration from an exhibit there!) #ditchbook

Yes, I'm curious about students making their own too. I've heard rumors there's an app now or coming soon to create your own expedition... Do you know anything about this @jmattmiller or @KarlyMoura#ditchbook
A2 check blogs first to get ideas, then I go through their suggested tools to see which ones fit my tech capabilities in my class, and then which ones are meaningful for creating engaging content!i like Expeditions & Streetview.Ts or Ss can create them in streetview! #DitchBook
Glad you bring this up. I sometimes use google street view whenever I'm going anywhere I'm not familiar with. I also look at what other countries look like through this map for fun #DitchBook#edfb4338

A3: Use it as a prompt for writing. Or, have students create an artifact in a MakerSpace for whatever you may be studying. Keep it alive by theming your week based on your location. Students could also share a GoogleTour with classmates. #DitchBook
A3: Reflect, and reflect some more! Use the experience to have students create a variety of reflections pieces, whether its video, audio, pictorial, written, or combinations of #ditchbook
I love having students make connections and comparisons to what they know after an experience like that. I get questions all the time about the money from the countries I teach about. They also think I’m rich with my 40 GTQs haha (worth less than $5) #DitchBook
A3: Analyze notable differences between a location we're familiar with and the one we have just visited. Or, have students present their learning and reflections using @Flipgrid. #ditchbook
Hi Everyone! I'm Susan Basalik, a music teacher from the Methacton School District located northwest of Philadelphia. I'm a cellist & I find that I make strong connections w/ my students when I show how the music that they are learning is also played by pro musicians. #DitchBook
A3: After a virtual field trip, we can take it farther by...let me count the ways:
Create comic Strip highlights or #sketchnotes
Creative writing activities
Create postcards
Create "scrapbook" highlights
(off the top of my head)
#DitchBook
A3 Hmmm... the obvious one to me is using @Flipgrid 💯
Also love the idea of students creating their own or collaborating on a @wakelet or PowerPoint together 🤔 #DitchBook
A3. I see the virtual field trip as a prime time for students to wake up their curiosity. The field trip itself should spark more questions and make them want to research and learn more about the area. #Ditchbook

A3: don’t just make it a little lesson add on. Make it meaningful! Debrief, discuss, reflect with your students. Use it as a spring board to create. Don’t stifle the learning and engagement by moving to something unrelated afterwards #DitchBook
Okay, we could create Instagram and Snapchat posts...stories...er...if we only knew a guy who had thought of this and already made templates. :) #DitchBook
Empatico is a PHENOMENAL resource for students in later elementary grades. They create fantastic global experiences your students won't forget! #DitchBook
A3 To maximize how far a virtual field-trip experience goes *after* it's done, generate explicit purposes w/learners *before* you 'go.' (Leave room for responding to spontaneous noticings, too, which might be a purpose unto itself.) #ditchbook

https://t.co/0xvIpLFKaw#DitchBook
A3 kind of along the lines of @EmpaticoOrg on q2, and to share some ideas maybe off point a bit, @WEMovement and the service learning goals both locally and globally are another really cool avenue for getting classroom connections #ditchbook
A3. I see the virtual field trip as a prime time for students to wake up their curiosity. The field trip itself should spark more questions and make them want to research and learn more about the area. #Ditchbook
A4: I would love to take my kids to every historical location we study. Also, to where our texts originated. I want them to understand they WHY of what we read. It makes non-fiction so much more engaging. #DitchBook
I've heard about international teachers FaceTimeing or skyping each other during their classes and giving short tours of their school or towns #DitchBook#edfb4338
A4: Why not do "A City a Day?" Even if it is only 5 minutes as an opener, think of the learning and places that could be visited! Locations all over and even just to explore and provide basic facts about each. Could be a basis for further learning. #ditchbook

A4: Hmmm. Content specific, it would be Lord of the Flies Island in the 50's, back in time for lots of things, but personally, I am a huge fan of Machu Picchu and anything Mayan. #DitchBook
A4: Knowing that the possibilty of ever going is slim, Antarctica or the northern reaches of Canada and/or Greenland, partly because of the scenery and wildlife, partly so I could pretend it was Hoth #ditchbook
A4: Atlantis because there were lots of debates with my 7th graders on its existence 😂 #DitchBook but really, I wish more places in the Middle East were accessible, due to my content, but also places in the past that have been destroyed/lost. I know we can’t, but if only!
