Hey now - I watched it in syndication every day after school.
Been looking forward to this : )
back to school this week. !
Thank you - happy to do my part under the Big Top... ;)
Hello from Wyoming. My first . Brant, MS Principal
Hi . Looking forward to reconnecting tonight.
Dr. Nancy Sulla here; author of and ; creator of ; Pres
Good evening everyone! Jessica, SF Bay Area
Well... welcome to tonight’s - we’re glad you came! Our mission for the hour is to explore the "Action Collab" style of DT
Welcome, ! Thanks for making time. As a MS teacher, I KNOW you don't stop. https://t.co/jupNPN9UOO
Hello from Wyoming. My first . Brant, MS Principal
Let’s start off by introducing yourself and, at the dwindling of summer, share where you would have your own edu conference.
We are a different breed, aren't we :)
Excited to pop in while I can! 2 littles still not asleep...
Always welcome for as much as can be. :)
in CA (temporarily) looking forward to interesting-and-useful led by , learning about Action Collabs!
Brant, what brought you to tonight? How'd you hear about us? :)
I would share how well our Breakout style PD has been so far this year at my staff meetings :)
Steve, K-5 principal in VA, also popping in as long as I can...
Ken G, in Newton, MA. I'd throw a great edu conference at ! I think I may have done so.
Hello! I'm looking forward to another great session!
. Greetings, Bryan! Where's your conference at?
So glad to see all the new and returning faces. It means a lot that folks give their time, so let's get to it!
Kevin from Monterey. I'd invite a convo on DT, spirituality, and the pilates muscles of transformative learning in... the ATL.
Right here in Dayton, OH - of course. :)
Let's just say I have a bit of an problem....probably need an intervention :) https://t.co/1UjNrcOXki
Brant, what brought you to tonight? How'd you hear about us? :)
Excited for this! I'll try to hit the aspects of Action Collabs that I think really resonate w/ folks.
Alright, jumping right into questions - in 5, 4, 3…
Q1: With a DT bias-toward-action, Action Collabs are workshops focused on moving ideas to reality. So... https://t.co/ETotl1lRBc
Hey Gary from Philly. Just ck'n in. Working on Meet the Teacher present for my new open source learning class
A1...time to lurk and learn :)
lisa from NY here. I'd throw an Ed conference in the most beautiful part of the world-teachers need to recharge
A2: I have been impressed with how empowered staff feel when DT replaces traditional staff meetings.
A1: I'm always amazed at the number of ideations when using DT. I ❤️ the solution focused mindset and willingness to merge ideas
Charlie here in Maryland – currently planning class, had to say hello!
Oh yeah?! I'd love to know how that works!
I agree. The pressure is off when the culture is iterative.
Adam from STL hanging out tonight.
Ban informational items. Have teachers find problems and bring them to the staff meeting for some dt action.
was surprised today when empathy interviews helped math teacher redesign her class using S needs!
A1 Love when DT mindset becomes regular part of how colleagues interact – designing on the fly together https://t.co/RzlxspMQsM
Q1: With a DT bias-toward-action, Action Collabs are workshops focused on moving ideas to reality. So... https://t.co/ETotl1lRBc
Significantly elevates the tired debates.
I think a protocol really helps with this as well.
1 question in and I'm already inspired. You go, *** Q2 coming right up!
yes "number of ideations... and willingness to merge ideas" are benefits of mindsets!
A1) Love to hear Ss using DT terms, moving between steps purposefully; then attaining that "aha" moment. https://t.co/r4P6HfjTmD
Q2a: The Action Collab process consists of a series of flares & focuses leading to testable impact. https://t.co/bpFnEtZhAJ
Oops, stopped paying attention for a minute and missed like half the chat
That is a real danger with ;) Don't worry - I'mma try to storify this sucka
A1. My favourite thing that happens when DT helps people connect to users in new ways
Agreed! It's sometimes scary how quickly folks will bond behind a purpose. Powerful stuff.
A2b Inviting MS students to annotate primary source docs, then share insights - THEN reflect on process. https://t.co/gAf6Du7wtD
this is the artistic process. Have to something to learn through materials. Then test and get feedback
A2: I could see this as a process to use related to school home communication/collaboration.
A2: Not familiar with the process, but I am a big believer in piloting different ideas before full scale implementation.
A2) My lesson planning process looks similar to this. The "testing" ends up happening year by year though.
A2: I like the fact that the first step is to find opportunity - I try to be optimistic and always look to improve
You guys sound like my kind of people :) https://t.co/ufqvkgBCig
A2: I like the fact that the first step is to find opportunity - I try to be optimistic and always look to improve
Nice! Are there shorter iteration cycles for smaller parts?
I like that - old problem from a new angle.
Often we can't see the cracks, as says. :)
definitely, since typically people like to start with problems and usually it is problem defining
I am so out of practice, I can barely read anything that is happening
I can't believe we're HALFWAY through already! Next Q up in mere seconds...
True. The messy parts are where the best learning seems to happen.
Q3a: Like all good things (right ?), successful Action Collabs rely on the tenets of improv https://t.co/S4Rwty6VPk
Me too. It seems when we try to scale too soon ideas start to unravel, too late and momentum is lost.
A3. Still thinking about serve the scene. Love that idea!
A2) We want all Ts in a school to promote the design thinking across all subjects, all day, all the time.
https://t.co/s08tughQko
I love the make your partner look brilliant. Might be t-shirt in the making.
Me too! I use that as a classroom agreement. All of these work in that context.
I struggle to maintain consistency from 1st of the day to last when u r a DT thinker. Pd 1 ends up
YAAAAS I would CRUSH that at work...! https://t.co/fhUgfdj3uh
I love the make your partner look brilliant. Might be t-shirt in the making.
I hope they appreciate their premium position. :)
I have been missing the . Might my night.
I have been missing the . Made my night.
Makes the old coach in me smile. We used to say "make your teammate look great" https://t.co/umm2tAMZLK
I love the make your partner look brilliant. Might be t-shirt in the making.
A3: Vulnerability here: I have problems with number 1 when other people have problems 1ith number 1...
A3a) These are useful principles/mindsets to stimulate-and-guide creative improvising.
Loving the churn tonight, folks! In the spirit of serving the scene (tenet 6) - here comes Q4...
A3b) "make your partner look brilliant" is good way to treat people in all of life, not just school DT-activities.
Probably my favorite artifact of Action Collabs is coming up next - I thank every time I use it! It helps me visualize WHY
Q4: “Action Collab” is built around the provocation arc. How do u innovate over obvious solutions? https://t.co/8tHN7IRxuf
yes "promote design thinking across all subjects, all day, all the time" because we use DT for almost all we do in life.
Q3b This is a lot like unconference or participatory leadership that I bring together with DT in my work
Can you tell me more about the provocation arc?
love this! I think it can happen naturally when Ss get feedback
A4) Promote creativity! Great article on 18 habits of highly creative people. Foster them in school!
https://t.co/bvJHsxAHKU
great ?s I'm eager to look into and Act. Collab. Wish I could chat...work to be done.
Q4b: The job of the designer in an Action Collab is to get the ideas up and over status quo. Advanced pic https://t.co/mC8Y6C0xpw
A4) Sometimes building more empathy can help get us over that hump to the promise land.
Hey sorry for the near miss tonight. I was watching the CiC Forum then needed a walk. But I'm loving the Qs
Definitely worth a looksie when you can. :)
your questions are so complex! I am already having a hard enough time staying on top of it all...
Consider this a with homework... ;P
A4 THIS is the right question. I find myself willing to iterate, but... sometimes only once. Task-manic? https://t.co/MAv3phbHiI
Q4: “Action Collab” is built around the provocation arc. How do u innovate over obvious solutions? https://t.co/8tHN7IRxuf
A1: partnering with area non-profits at and watching tears of excitement and relief at the work of FUSE-goers
Did my follow up Q4b help at all?
A3b) I like watching point guards who "make partners look [and feel] brilliant" during improvised flow of the game.
Research doesn't count...? ;P
I missed ! The best laid plans... Miss all, can't wait to meet new people, will catch up on the feed tomorrow! Thinking of you!
Hey there Ashley! I'm going to try my darndest to storify this one... I'll share out the link here at
A4: Unexpected partnerships might be away to get around the block.
Yes! In fact, one exercise in an Action Collab is "analog" research: how do others approach the issue?
When I first read this, I wanted to immediately steal this teacher for my school. Still working on it... https://t.co/tH1GaTJzLy
I think it's a good move. My kids have been Montessori educated and never had homework.
Never gonna tell you no or interrupt your flow. :)
A2: differentiation in the classroom. When I see an opp. to teach differently to indv Ss I meander "naturally" thru the DT cycle
honestly I am scared of sending my kid to school cause I think it will mess with our learning flow
Relational transparency may help as well. When one person open sources their thinking others begin to do the same.
Oh my, look at the time! Q5 coming in hot...
relational transparency?!?! when did get so academic??
That's worth a 2nd I think!
Hey buddy!!! I've missed you
ooo I have never seen this before. me likes.
Q5. Without a doubt I am a generator.
A5: What I love about this is that there is no "bad" role here. All might be useful at one time or another...
THIS. https://t.co/8HrMZVMBvn
A3b) I like watching point guards who "make partners look [and feel] brilliant" during improvised flow of the game.
A5) Reminds me of deBono's 6 hats https://t.co/DcX1a8hvIn
You need to put on different "hats" to see all sides of a situation.
I know, right? has got the goods.
A5: Being a math guy, I'm immediately drawn to the X-Axis...I like it :)
A3:I love the overall positivity of these tenets. improv imho values all input and morphs to see that input thru
definitely stealing this for the designership :)
Sorry to miss my worthy friends tonight
you know, strikes and gutters
thank you for link to excellent idea-resource (re: habits to be more creative) - it's a fascinating, important topic.
Black hat thinking helps a team prepare for contingencies and refine ideas, maybe?
Missing you, man! Loved to see your classroom redesign today!
challenges can fuel new opportunities. Look for how you can solve someone's "no, buts" and you have a champion
Can't we all fall into these roles at times?
YES. We have this map up in our main conference room as a prompt to reflect when in teams... Very useful.
Working on my book on as the missing link to S achievement. Creativity is an EF skill. Fascinating!
Would you say you actually need some "no, buts" to challenge a design?
A5 Passenger = invite creative confidence from shy sharers, early in the year. Plant ?-asking culture. https://t.co/l4EL9OLTsb
Figuring out comfort zones and boundaries of "no, buts" can help mitigate potential hiccups down the road.
