Hello #ohedchat! John Longo, Grade 11 and 12 counselor and aspiring administrator from Delaware, Ohio. Glad to be able to join in tonight! Just finished helping my 13 year old son with Algebra. Not sure if it was really fun, but important. Good thing I'm not a math teacher ;-).
Please don't forget to include the hashtag #ohedchat so everyone can follow along.
You can add #REALedu for bonus points...aka that title of the REAL MVP! ;)
Kendre Milburn 5th grade science T in Houston TX! Excited to get to chat with @TaraMartinEDU. When I met her at #ISTE18 she was seriously the sweetest ❤️ #ohedchat
Hi, I'm Tara- Educator of many roles...Teacher, Coach, Admin + Author of Be REAL: Educate from the Heart, national keynote speaker + Director of Media and Communications for @dbc_inc !
Excited to be here! #Ohedchat#REALEdu
#ohedchat Jeff from Lancaster High. The fun this week was keeping up with all of the school closings! I've only seen my students for 1 day since last Wednesday!
Hello #ohedchat Jennifer Schwelik, INFOhio Instruction. Joining in tonight to learn. Spent the week working on Open Space, a new tool for Ohio's educators, that will be launched on Feb. 13 at OETC. Hope to see you all there.
A1- Be “REAL” to me is being 100% authentic and genuine to who you are as a person regardless of the situation! Letting your true self shine through at all times. #ohedchat
A1 Being real requires you to be authentic. It is having people who accept you for who you are, faults and all. Have your values and beliefs and stick to them. Live with your heart first and foremost. #ohedchat

A1: Being real is being authentic, genuine, honest. I think of one of my doctors--he was straight up with me, even when he had to share what I didn't want to hear. I knew I could trust him. #ohedchat#REALedu
A1: be real = being your true self to all stakeholders, all the time. How can we develop trust and rapport if we are anything less than real? #relationshipsmatter#Ohedchat
A1) I envision myself being transparent with the student I am meeting with, and doing my best to meet them where they are. Not in a demeaning way by any stretch, but attempting to reach them in their current state. Happy, excited, down, etc. I need to relate to them. #ohedchat
I think the trust piece is such a key in being real. We can't build trust if we aren't genuine with others. And that leads to rapport--great point! #ohedchat#REALedu
Trust is key in any relationship. Even when sharing something that the recipient may not want to hear. We frequently are placed in type of this type of situation with students. How they respond depends on the level of trust they have in us. #ohedchat
A1: Being real is being authentic, genuine, honest. I think of one of my doctors--he was straight up with me, even when he had to share what I didn't want to hear. I knew I could trust him. #ohedchat#REALedu
A1 "Real" people fail many more times at attempts before they meet w/ success. We must support the growth of our colleagues as they try new things to grow & adapt, rather than reveling in "Pinterest perfect" final products in the world of education. #OHedchat
Q2: REAL/R-Relatable: In her book, Tara writes, "Being relatable is necessary for every member of the school community, no matter their role." What activities do you use to better relate to (or get to know) those you serve? Share examples and pictures, if you have them. #ohedchat
A1: Robin - IL, Be genuine, authentic...be Yourself. Sometimes we can try too hard to be what we think is acceptable...it comes across superficial. BE YOURSELF...you are one of a kind! #ohedchat
A1 - Authentic and genuine are words that definitely come to mind. Human also comes to mind - that’s that vulnerable, I made a mistake honesty. #OhEdChat
A1- Be “REAL” to me is being 100% authentic and genuine to who you are as a person regardless of the situation! Letting your true self shine through at all times. #ohedchat
A2: I think integrating social media into the school's culture is important. At my school, many teachers have professional Twitter and/or Instagram profiles. Our admin promotes our school hashtag #GranvillePike to engage students in class and at sporting events #ohedchat
Q2: REAL/R-Relatable: In her book, Tara writes, "Being relatable is necessary for every member of the school community, no matter their role." What activities do you use to better relate to (or get to know) those you serve? Share examples and pictures, if you have them. #ohedchat
A2: Listening is the first thing I do to get to know others. Asking a question or two to invite the sharing of stories really helps build a relationship. I can find those connection points when I truly listen. #ohedchat#REALedu
A2) Being visible & available is on par with being relatable. If we work in an "office" (administrator, counselor instr. leader), we need to make sure we are getting into classrooms. And teachers need to be visible during passing time, lunch hour, after school, etc. #ohedchat
A2: Get to know them and their interests. Find ways to connect and relate to their lives. Those chats in hallways, before class, after class go a long way. Going to students shows, sports, performances is a fantastic way of connecting. Show them that they matter. #ohedchat
Q2...again
REAL/R- Relatable: I believe being relatable is necessary for every member of the school community, no matter their role.
What activities do you use to better relate to (or get to know) those you serve? Share examples & pictures, if you have them. #ohedchat#REALedu
A2: 1st day this year students created with play doh to represent something about them, then we shared out. For the first 2 months of school - every Monday students used a Frayer model to interview each other about their weekends. We also had a #passionwall#ohedchat
A2- Meet kids at door w/ ✋🏻, a question and sometimes a guitar & song! (No-can’t play or sing). Questions lead to further conversation! I’m very open about my life as well- I share a lot with them! I call home to 5 Ss a week to share appreciation of their children! #ohedchat
One of my favorite Pinterest finds is Sweatpants and Coffee, and a couple of her graphics convey the message, "You are enough." It's a great reminder to pause and take a breath when I need to! #ohedchat#REALedu
A2: Besides being an admin - I am still a mom, a teacher, a friend...so I am always willing to listen to a good family story, or share updates on kids away at college. I love seeing the great teaching that goes on around me everyday too #ohedchat
My son's pre-algebra teacher starts each day with a goofy pun of some sort. He immediately connected with that--for the first two weeks of school, I heard lots about that class! #ohedchat#REALedu
A2: Love this question. Our answers speak to our identities as leaders. Activities from being engaged listeners, taking action in difficult times and even sitting on the carpet and listening to a read aloud all speak to how and why we lead. #OHedchat
Q2: REAL/R-Relatable: In her book, Tara writes, "Being relatable is necessary for every member of the school community, no matter their role." What activities do you use to better relate to (or get to know) those you serve? Share examples and pictures, if you have them. #ohedchat
#ohedchat Goal in classroom, state projects, or neighborhood to build relationships with every member of the community by actively listening, responding authenticly, and respecting the contributions of each person.
I am reading Michelle Obama's book - and she talks about telling herself "you are enough" when faced with her shifting roles through her life. I think as female leaders, we sometimes need to remind ourselves of that! #OHedchat
Q3: REAL / E- Expose Vulnerability: Part of being REAL in our classrooms and schools is being willing to expose vulnerability. How do you get past the discomfort of vulnerability to more readily relate to others?
#ohedchat#REALEdu
A2 Share everything! It helps others feel like they are a part of the classroom. Ps/Ss/Ts/admin are able to look at our hashtag #ExploreWells. They love seeing stories on my classroom insta. We went live for the eclipse. I had previous Ss join in! #OHedchat
A2: I see all the Ss in our building working in the LRC. I find out their reading interests, talk to them about books they check out or books they might be interested in. #reading is a universal talking point. #ohedchat#lovetoread
Q2: REAL/R-Relatable: In her book, Tara writes, "Being relatable is necessary for every member of the school community, no matter their role." What activities do you use to better relate to (or get to know) those you serve? Share examples and pictures, if you have them. #ohedchat
A2. - learn along side my learners. I am openly not an expert. But sure do love trying new things and learning with people. Sharing my mistakes is also something a share often - Makes me human. #ohedchat
A3: I always admit my failures and use them as teachable moments. Bad lesson? Tear it up and talk about it. Poor assessment grades? Roll up our sleeves and get to work. Vulnerability can quickly be a model of perseverance. #ohedchat
A3: A3: my ah-hah moment was when my seventh graders told me during my dissertation that transparency was key: you may feel naked as you do it, but you have to share in appropriate ways the “pedagogical secrets” we keep with the kids #OhEdChat
A3: It took lots of deep breaths. One example: I was reading a Paulsen book to my Ss, and in one chapter, a dog died. I was in tears--not just on my face, but in my voice. My Ss were right there with me--a moment we shared. Not planned. Just happened. #ohedchat#REALedu
RT Q3: REAL / E- Expose Vulnerability: Part of being REAL in our classrooms and schools is being willing to expose vulnerability. How do you get past the discomfort of vulnerability to more readily relate to others? #ohedchat
A2: go out on a limb and take risks - playing it safe and being status quo doesn’t demonstrate vulnerability.
Don’t be afraid to share stories with others through twitter, Instagram, blogs. #ohedchat
A3 I think at some point you just have to engage in REAL Talk. Many times it's allowing others to share their heart as we engage in the REAL Talk Treasures.
https://t.co/G2p8PhiqAd
This leads to a relationship & makes being vulnerable SO much easier.
#ohedchat#REALedu
Agreed! Our WiFi has not been working properly...for the last week, Plan A turns into Plan B, we roll with it, and the Ss see that technology does not always work, modeling #perseverance and #grit. #ohedchat
So true--and when I admit my mistakes and failings, it's easier for others to do the same. (Applies to parenting, too, I've learned.) #ohedchat#REALedu
A3: I've never had a problem with telling students "I don't know" or "Let me check on that before I give you an answer." I think students appreciate when you are honest with them. Admitting that you don't have all the answers makes you human. #ohedchat
Q3: REAL / E- Expose Vulnerability: Part of being REAL in our classrooms and schools is being willing to expose vulnerability. How do you get past the discomfort of vulnerability to more readily relate to others?
#ohedchat#REALEdu
A3: A2: go out on a limb and take risks - playing it safe and being status quo doesn’t demonstrate vulnerability.
Don’t be afraid to share stories with others through twitter, Instagram, blogs. #ohedchat
A2: I like to allow time for conversations with my students and colleagues. During carpool, I will walk around and randomly sit with students to check in to see how everything is going...we even share book talks! #Ohedchat#REALedu
Q2...again
REAL/R- Relatable: I believe being relatable is necessary for every member of the school community, no matter their role.
What activities do you use to better relate to (or get to know) those you serve? Share examples & pictures, if you have them. #ohedchat#REALedu
#ohedchat Vulnerability involves being authentic. Not hiding behind a facade of the expert; instead, being one in a community of learners. Leading the learning with your own admissions on what you need to learn and what is difficult.
Goes with being REAL! When one of my BFs died 3 wks ago- was very honest with my students and showed real emotion. When sharing PD on Trauma at Fac Mtg shared real life personal situations and how it affected me. Led to some great conversations! #ohedchat
A3 Show Ss the REAL you. Have conversations about your life(when appropriate), the good and the bad. When you mess up, fess up. Show them it is OK to mess up. Own it and show them how to grow from it. #OhEdChat
Sooo true! What helped me was when a parent sent in a note the next day sharing what that moment meant to her daughter and how powerful it was for her. #ohedchat#REALedu
Q4: REAL / A- Approachable:
Name (or think of) someone within your realm of influence who is approachable.
Describe what makes them approachable. #ohedchat
A3) I think this comes with time and experience. As a young teacher, I was pretty reserved. I didn't let too many others into "in." As I've grown as a person and educator, I've adjusted. Everyone has a story, and most others want to know a little! Makes us human. #ohedchat
A2: I use a Google Survey anonymously in the 1st semester to discover what's working for my Ss & what they'd like to change. By doing it mid year, I can make changes to my instruction while my Ss can still benefit from the improvement. Link here: https://t.co/ydH04vErlp#ohedchat
A3: I always admit my failures and use them as teachable moments. Bad lesson? Tear it up and talk about it. Poor assessment grades? Roll up our sleeves and get to work. Vulnerability can quickly be a model of perseverance. #ohedchat
Love this. I share a very emotional story in my book how two tragedies brought two hearts together. It's incredible the new levels of empathy we gain from life-events--good and tragic.
#ohedchat#REALedu
I am so sorry to hear this. It is tough losing anyone close, but I am sure your student's appreciated your openness and humility. I am guessing it allowed you to start the healing process as well. #ohedchat
Goes with being REAL! When one of my BFs died 3 wks ago- was very honest with my students and showed real emotion. When sharing PD on Trauma at Fac Mtg shared real life personal situations and how it affected me. Led to some great conversations! #ohedchat

A3: I accept in myself I am a “work in progress”, as a result ... I’m thinkin’ the kiddos are “works in progress!” If I make mistakes, I can be more tolerant and forgiving of student mistakes. “Teachable Moments”! #ohedchat
Q3: REAL / E- Expose Vulnerability: Part of being REAL in our classrooms and schools is being willing to expose vulnerability. How do you get past the discomfort of vulnerability to more readily relate to others?
#ohedchat#REALEdu
A4: @kwillertz is a great friend and an incredible person. What makes her approachable is her willingness to listen, no judgements, and always giving sound advice with a splash of humor. Her breakthroughs with kids is immeasurable. #ohedchat
Q4...again...
REAL / A- Approachable:
Name (or think of) someone within your realm of influence who is approachable.
Describe what makes them approachable.
#ohedchat#REALedu
Realm of influence--I think any of the circles/spheres in which we work/live. Someone who influences you, but with whom you also have influence. #ohedchat#REALedu
A3: Admitting when we’ve made a mistake or don’t know the answer especially with our students. This sends a message that mistakes are acceptable and enables us to learn and grow! #Ohedchat#REALedu
Q3: REAL / E- Expose Vulnerability: Part of being REAL in our classrooms and schools is being willing to expose vulnerability. How do you get past the discomfort of vulnerability to more readily relate to others?
#ohedchat#REALEdu
Love your mindset.
I often say...let's not glorify failures but rather...share the downfall and celebrate what happened NEXT!
It's all about learning and growing while sharing the process along the way! #ohedchat#REALedu
A4: So many of my mentors are also very approachable--great listeners, willing to share stories, willing to trouble-shoot, problem-solve, be thought partners, help me find silver linings or laugh when needed. #ohedchat#REALedu
Q4: REAL / A- Approachable:
Name (or think of) someone within your realm of influence who is approachable.
Describe what makes them approachable. #ohedchat
I immediately think of those that smile or say good morning every morning. Those who have thought of me or done something unexpected to connect with me - they are approachable. #ohedchat
Q4: REAL / A- Approachable:
Name (or think of) someone within your realm of influence who is approachable.
Describe what makes them approachable. #ohedchat
A4) I appreciate my A.P. as being approachable. I like how when he administers discipline, he does not hold it against the student. I also shared with him recently that he has good balance. Does not complain much, but is not so unbelievably happy all the time either ;-) #ohedchat
A4. #ohedchat Paul Williams, a former superintendent of mine, is always there, always smiling, always listening, and somehow able to pull together factions to become a whole. He models REAL in every aspect of his life.
A4- I think I’d say many of my administratorshave been and by that they’ve always been very open and honest and wanting the best fir me in the various situations! My peers are wonderful people that I can talk to like siblings and be 100% real with even if we disagree! #ohedchat
A4: @lrcthies , @KelleyBudd & Janet DeMont. They are Thought Partners who have the ability to listen, counsel, a colleague to bounce ideas off of, “outside the box” thinkers that challenge the status quo. #ohedchat
Q4: REAL / A- Approachable:
Name (or think of) someone within your realm of influence who is approachable.
Describe what makes them approachable. #ohedchat
A4: The people I find most approachable are comfortable in their own world -so are willing to listen, share ideas, collaborate, provide feedback, and are excited and engaged in their own work. #ohedchat
A4 My "approachable" pals are always there. They don't think my ideas are out of reach--they are often my multipliers, too.
Approachable people just feel like the opposite side of the magnet to me. It's felt and not always seen.
They=vulnerable & REAL, too!
#ohedchat#REALedu
Q5: REAL / L- Learning Through Life: Trying new strategies and approaches in education (& in anything) can be scary.
What are the benefits of jumping in and embracing the challenge? How do you overcome the fear of taking a risk & learning something new?
#ohedchat#REALedu
Agreed! Anonymous communication, even when there is strong trust & a relationship, evens the “subordinate factor” when a Ss want to communicate a negative issue or problem w/ the teacher. #OhEdChat
A5: Getting ready to try something totally new with my freshman classes. Whether it works or not doesn’t matter; I’ll still be wiser for having tried #ohedchat
Q5: REAL / L- Learning Through Life: Trying new strategies and approaches in education (& in anything) can be scary.
What are the benefits of jumping in and embracing the challenge? How do you overcome the fear of taking a risk & learning something new?
#ohedchat#REALedu
A5: Jumping in is almost always sure to result in lots of learning--of what works and what doesn't. There's lots of growth. Having a thought partner can help with the fear--thinking through risks, challenges. #ohedchat#REALedu
A4: Demonstrates positivity, keeps it real, shows compassion and empathy. Always willing to step outside of the box without fear of failing. Whatever it takes to make it better for the students! #Ohedchat#REALedu
Q4...again...

RT Q5: REAL/L-Learning Through Life: Trying new strategies and approaches in education (and in anything) can be scary. What are the benefits of jumping in and embracing the challenge? How do you overcome the fear of taking a risk and learning (or doing) something new? #ohedchat
A5 I embrace this #Cannonballin mindset. If an opportunity presents itself, I'm a go-getter! I just love jumping in and trying it--knowing I'll learn a ton...even if I bellyflop!
#ohedchat#REALedu
A5: Just do it! This makes me think of last year - I did a bill of rights lesson. It was crazy, loud, funny, goofy - At first I was nervous. These traits were not part of my teaching style until I did it. It changed classroom culture, presented a different side of me #ohedchat
A5- in 16 yrs- I’m one of the elders in my MS and try to lead by example even if not popular. started to speak up /making changes to my classroom to be more Trauma- Informed and leading PD. led to many conversations and peers seeking input/more infor! #Cannonballin#ohedchat
Risk taking is part of every day in education. No risk. No learn. Thoughtfully embracing the challenge and setting aside fear opens the door to learning. Students take risks every step of the way. Example: Creating Open Space for Ohio Educators. #ohedchat
Taking those chances can be a great opportunity to share with students the challenges, risks, successes, failures, and especially the what next. It's modeling what happens in life! #ohedchat#REALedu
A5 - the benefits are insurmountable - the new exponential learning, the new connections in your brain & with others & the joy/pride one feels intrinsically are all priceless.
You can overcome the fear by reminding yourself how good it feels to not remain status quo! #ohedchat

What are the benefits of jumping in and embracing the challenge? How do you overcome the fear of taking a risk & learning something new?
#ohedchat#REALedu
When I think about my first-year classroom and my 20+ year classroom---from straight, silent rows to tables moved all over and lots of noise/chatter, it's a great illustration of transformation--classroom AND teacher. #ohedchat#REALedu
A5: I have a family member that unexpectedly had to make a job change. Thru this experience she had to... “Learn, Adapt, Adjust”. That new #growthmindset has been a blessing! It has become my Mantra! #ohedchat

A5) You either win, or learn. S's tell me, "I won't make the team" or "I won't get into that college" and I respond with, "maybe, but you won't know if you don't try." Sometimes the S is surprised, and other times, they learn adversity and how to respond. We can too. #ohedchat
A5: If we always waited until there was no fear, no state testing going on, or the observation was completed, etc., we wouldn't jump in & take risks. Our Ss deserve to see us fail too! We want our Ss to be comfortable missing the mark at 1st try, so we should be too! #OHedchat
A5: When you stop worrying about what others are going to think about you - and focus on what you think about yourself - it is much easier to jump into new things as a learner. #ohedchat
Exactly. That's one of the things I love the most. :) Going through these Learning Through Life experiences gives you "lifecred" it's kinda like "streetcred" but better. ;) People of all ages believe you & connect. :)
#ohedchat#REALedu
I loved teaching freshman when I was still in the classroom. My favorite grade. I always felt I could joke around, but also really give some life lessons to that age. #ohedchat
A5: Getting ready to try something totally new with my freshman classes. Whether it works or not doesn’t matter; I’ll still be wiser for having tried #ohedchat

A6: I will keep learning from others through twitter, Instagram, blogs, podcasts.
I love learning new ideas from other teachers or looking at finished products and thinking about the lesson created to reach that result. #ohedchat
A6- One of my goals I’ve been sitting on is to create an after school program that includes academic support, social/physical interactions, and a meal for those students who may need it. Time to go from “desire” to reality! #lookout#ohedchat
A5: Jumping in and embracing new challenges fuels my passion! Believing in yourself and accepting the possibility of failing helps me to overcome my fears! I never fail! I either win or learn. Cannonball in! #ohedchat#REALedu@burgessdave

It’s important to stop thinking about the stories others might tell themselves about you. A Very wise thought partner just reminded me of this. @kimberleyadair#ohedchat
A5: When you stop worrying about what others are going to think about you - and focus on what you think about yourself - it is much easier to jump into new things as a learner. #ohedchat
A6: I want to continue working on the listening--even in those days when I feel like I have a thousand things to do and can't afford to take the time. That's when I need to take the time the MOST. #ohedchat#REALedu
A6) I do feel at times I still have to be guarded when working with other educators, especially if I do not know them. As I type this response, I realize the answer. I need to get to that other person better, and then I can be "real" with them. I need to trust them. #ohedchat
Just finished reading #daretolead by @BreneBrown - I commit to being Clear. “Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” That will keep me genuine to myself and honest with others. #ohedchat
A6: Hopefully I can start learning from more colleagues as we start our own in-district Twitter chat #GalesEdChat. Excited to hear ideas from other teachers in my own district #ohedchat
Special thanks to @TaraMartinEDU for joining us tonight here on #ohedchat. If you're looking for a great read that will help you professionally and personally, be sure to check out her book Be Real: Educate from the Heart.
A6. Making a commitment to be honest, yet kind. And, taking up something I have not done before - to learn and grow. Think I'll take up Adam's idea - grow with social media, too. #ohedchat

I call those types of people the "dabblers" in my book! They aren't jumping--just judging from the sidelines. If they aren't in the water...jumping & making a splash--why does their opinion even matter? I want feedback from a fellow jumper. #ohedchat#REALedu
A6: I ♥️ this question! I recently went to a social event because I thought “I should”. After I got home, I reflected about my choice, made a decision to honor my “instincts”...if it doesn’t feel right...don’t do it! Be Real! #ohedchat
