first time I've joined in on this chat, interested to see how the topic is addressed! From Sydney
LOL. So true! We can't have a . without something going wrong for someone!
Welcome as always William! .
Just checking. Are we defining the digital divide as those with and without access, or those with and without know-how?
correct 25mins from Westport
A1: it doesn't in an economic sense, for me the divide is those who can use and those who can't.
Hi Stuart! Always excited to join
Awesome response and welcome as always Gail! . A1
assessment submission day in every year group in Religion and wasn't working today!
Some schools dont embark on digital tech journeys because of the digital divide - not knowing how to overcome the barriers
Anyway you choose to define it. I'm interested in the access issue, yet also the divide between tasks
A1 . For me, in my school, it's about the variance in quality of devices that the studenst have. .
A1 . For me, in my school, it's about the variance in quality of devices that the studenst have. .
Hi Sarah from South Auckland RTLB
Great answer Leigh and welcome.. These schools can't be left behind however! .
Great answer Leigh and welcome.. These schools can't be left behind however! .
I concur Wellington is awesome!
I stayed at Gentle Annie for my honeymoon. Loved Granity!
A1- Ss creating digital content in one room vs S using apps for play next door. Variance of quality digital lng
A1: The digital divide to me is both 1) those with and without tech, and 2) those with and without the skills to use tech
Just dropping in, unlikely to make the full hour, sleep beckoning..!!
Cool! One day maybe. Best get into my new job for a while first
A1: Not so much have’s and have nots. We all have technology. More the implementation and use of. The can and cannot of use.
Not surprised, had to use it for last uni assignment, ! .
A1) Very prominent. There is a considerable spectrum of digital use in classrooms. Some too much, and some too little. FEAR..
A1 it isn't a divide is a chasm of those who can, those who can't, those with access, those without
thank you - happily still on holiday, so just doing a little bit of CPD! :-)
What is the digital divide? Every student in school has a touchscreen laptop. Not all know how to use https://t.co/oKskff4lKE
A1: But also within those that have tech - the quality of them. Particularly in BYOD school
Good on you, hope you've had an awesome break .
A1: I'm incredibly lucky to be at a 1:1 mac school. Means we're not used to handling access issues when they arise though
What about those who will and those who won't - is it doing Ss a diservice not to use?
Great point Danielle, often the divide is not about the devices. .
This is what worries me - digital literacy is every increasing in import, yet what Ss r experiencing isn't helping
I think its both. Access to doesn’t always guarantee use or successful use.
In our school, we supply all the devices, few have them at home https://t.co/1gs52W5KQx
A1 . For me, in my school, it's about the variance in quality of devices that the studenst have. .
agreed! The digital divide has created a second divide. It's not just the tools but also the tech
Jumping in late! What a day!
Long term I think so. Students have to know the basics or they fall too far behind IMO..
A1 Probably in that some Ts are more competent/confident than others in using digital technology on Tchg&Lrng
has to come onto those people to change the way they teach
So many teachers still see it as a cumbersome extra
Malo e lelei. Malia, Aorere College, Auckland. rookie :)
Hi Heather, we're looking at some sort of subsidy next year to ensure equity..
Teacher digital expertise is the elephant in the room?
A1. It also delivers a opportunity to4students 2 show empathy through illuminating equity issues themselves in collaboration
thankfully every student and staff member has the same laptop - makes life easier
For Ts as well as students often..
learning support is so needed
are there still ppl with access who refuse to use? Genuine question
My thoughts exactly https://t.co/JPTqeCUeiO
A1: The digital divide to me is both 1) those with and without tech, and 2) those with and without the skills to use tech
it depends on the reasons. If it is because there are better ways to teach topic, then no.
digital divide can also be how the tech is being used in classes or with Ss
A1) There is both a fear of and a resistance to change by some... Others may be forgetting how to write!
A1: Educators not understanding how to use tech to teach but rather using it as a time filler ie play games
That's awesome, that's my utopia, would make such a difference to learning and student futures at my school..
I fully agree. You said it perfectly.
A1. Using devices as a tool to go deeper than a substitute for pen and paper
If it's sole because of fear of tech or change, then yes! :-)
A1 Digital divide at my schools manifests as a "I'm techie" Vs "I'm not techie" attitude
Sadly, I have come across a few.
A1: I have 4 ipads available to use in my class so they have been included in the maths and reading task boards
yes! I don't think much goes on at Tcoll still Must we rely on teacher's doing it for themselves, as u talked of?
I have an HOD who's tech-adverse, big issue for her dept! .
I agree, in one case, it's because the T doesn't want to cede knowledge, power to her students. .
A1:Ts who see tech as a substitution 4 paper n pen vs Ts who use it to in ways 2 extend and engage Ls https://t.co/IOZI7Jd0se
IMO 1:1 laptop schools often come from a place of knowing how & why, so poss not so problematic there
and then there are the gatekeepers who limit access for various reasons
Q2 Huge equity problems right across NZ
Malo e lelei, I'm from Tamaki and a rookie too!
Good Q! I'd like to go on treasure hunt & find out what works for Ts- 1size doesn't fit all Ss4 lng or T 4PD
A1-wouldn't say there is a significant divide at my school, everyone seems to be keen to learn something about digital tools!
Yes!! Still Ts who think reading from a PPT is utilising tech fully!
As long as the gatekeeping is evidenced-based no probs but otherwise... .
And the "techies" get a stigma attached to them, I find...
agh yes! Met a few of them too!
Joan, EdTech Director from Florida dropping in.
Rookie still win tournaments! .
yes but there are schools who have forgotten this simple rule
A1 - Rural school in mining region - huge divide in money and resources. Unreliable internet in homes.
100% disservice. I believe it is the 3rd literacy & vital for future work
A1. Do we have the right tools for the job? Has enough resource gone into the impact for the learners?
LOL. I've got a couple of Ts who mourn OHPs! .
And is that fair on the Ss?
The same in the US. How can we change this?
This is great! So important that people keep exploring deeper and don't just stop at that first level
the battle between rich v poor in education, privatization v public, holistic v digital, a wide range of issues.
1:1 should mean all embrace tech and learn to use it. Not always so, though. Its part of the risk/growth mindset.
That only covers early adopters. We need everyone on the waka (canoe)
A2: Not sure about NZ, but it's about giving the Ss the essential skills to use tech successfully.
. Welcome Malia, one of Aorere's best Ts! .
. Welcome Malia, one of Aorere's best Ts! .
A1 we are iPad 1:1 grades k-12 but add a BYOD laptop at HS level
Sorry late, interesting topic
What is the point of using technology if all you are doing is shifting the pen to a keyboard? https://t.co/CEX0WywBvF
A1. Using devices as a tool to go deeper than a substitute for pen and paper
our local college is already approaching our yr 8 Whanau to get devices for yr9
the only model I have seen working in Manaiakalani
Evening - but late! Steph from Akld
A2: When ICT is used effectively within a learning environment it decreases barriers and increases the diversity of education
Because we're talking about a social divide now and in the future if we don't get this sorted! . A2
Can't believe that access wasn't a bigger issue, could not access a single laptop today for class.
A2: To address equity of access to information among all ss
I worked in a town where none of the families could afford a wifi connection. And connection spasmodic at best.
pre-service training would help I think & hopefully MOE addition of it in curriculum
A2. Not teaching and learning to our potential. What happens in the classroom won't be relevant to the real world
This is my third now but still a rookie :)
Can vary widely depending on the purpose/ start vision for going 1:1 imo https://t.co/wH94f0FMZd
IMO 1:1 laptop schools often come from a place of knowing how & why, so poss not so problematic there
A1 Digital Divide for us is really in usage-different levels of depth & complexity but we are moving the right way
it comes down to equity issues - not just whether tech is accessible but that it is used effectively.
Not by the quality of your posts, you're not!
A2: Plus it is a social justice issue!!
A2: So Ts have a shared understanding of how to use tech to enhance learning and can share their innovative teaching ideas
A2 Digital divide needs to be addressed to ensure equal opportunities for all students
A2: Not sure I’m qualified to answer that. But in Aus, access to reliable internet that doesn’t cost $$$ would be a start!
A2) To practice what we preach, rather than adopt the do as I say, not as I do attitude..
A2: All Ss have the right to quality education regardless of the type of tech they have available to them.
They do soooooooo little edtech!
This is true, but I'd say more and more schools going 1:1 in the right way for right reasons
A1. Digital divide about how teachers use tecnology- sometimes does not matter about amount of devices- just if used wisely!
That's so true. Two Ts, one could use it as an enabler, the other as word processor!
Depends. As long as the T is keen to learn and experiment with ICTs, then that's ok. But not ok if they don't
A2. Is the learning authentic? Are the tools enhancing or detracting from the learners experience?
Not modelling growth mindset there are they?
They're trained as Ts not learning facilitators,
A2: access to information for all
Dont know if Manaiakalani would work in small towns across NZ?
Very true. Better to try and fail, than never to try
A1 equity of access, ability and desire - so as Ldr need to personalize to ensure Ts needs met
In our South Island thank you very much! LOL.
A2: exactly! Not only that but sad that tech is usually used more by Ts than the Ss!
I haven't experienced the digital divide so much in Oz - those who don't have internet at home do work at school
Nice, the T should be using it the least compared to the Ss!
A2. Not sure about NZ! But I was dying to say a sheep answer! 😂 But I didn't!
A2 collective responsibility to doing the right thing for learners rather than 1 upping the school down the road
Excellent point Latai. Schools need to reflect society now and forward IMO. A2
A2 Because at the end of the day we'd like everyone to be equal, rich or poor, city or country...
A2: Because technology can be such an incredibly powerful tool in education. We want all Ss to have opportunity and access
Yeah, but it`s a tool not a necessity. I have kids who don`t like digital. Prefer to draw. Or be outside. It`s not a panacea
At the end of the day,the ability to write is important, don't have a laptop in all walks of life :)
I think that’s where we are heading but also what is holding us back. At times an excuse for anti-tech users.
Otherwise the safety of our society comes under threat.
Yes, its not the tech, it's the learning. I'm a big fan of blended learning ie tech + non-tech https://t.co/p4pZT2WeKp
A2. Is the learning authentic? Are the tools enhancing or detracting from the learners experience?
A2. No digital divide = what four walls around the classroom?
I did a survey about how often Ss got to use IWBs and Ctouch - results were shocking!
financial cost and physical travel being able to learn about something not in your neighborhood
So much love for this response...
I think it is well hidden in many classrooms! https://t.co/rYRqVo9yYQ
I haven't experienced the digital divide so much in Oz - those who don't have internet at home do work at school
Great point Matt, I'd love the state to subsidise low-income students 50% of device, no more.
True, many homes in NZ have no internet access or can't afford data on a phone That family can't support child
It's about having the ability to be adaptive. Wish they focussed on dev that during training
Yes I think it does - if we agree that its essential to have world skills and be global students then we must
Imp. to give Ss access to master teaching in all areas incl. pushing creative boundaries in tech https://t.co/u1eVsGaXfQ
only #2 trending currently...
I'm amazed at what tells me about the uni prep re edtech!
I find it shocking that schools less than 30 mins from each other have such different access to tech - skills & devices
I'm of a similar thought, there has to be the "why" for the learner
Digital tech is far less important when compared to social justice. It`s capitalistic ideology, right?
what about digital literacy skills that is the second divide
yes, the divide I do see a lot which I mentioned earlier is in terms of skills - have to teach these explicitly
and that then becomes the issue of accessibility.
Great point Joan, we don't want just tech users, we want tech creators!
Ts need to learn about SAMR during tchr training!
is now trending in New Zealand, ranking 22
yes definitely see this all the time - was just talking about access in that last tweet
We supply iPads for students who aren't in the BYOD program so we are a 1:1 device school
I see a lot of high decile schools not willing to change practice because they are already successful re acadmeic results
Also a divide grows between those who can support Ss learning continuing at home & those who can't
A3 Using collaborative apps is always good, free ones too. Go Google
More people need to understand the diff between equity and equality. A2
A2. Helping all students to succeed
And see lots of awesome practice in low decile schools
built a habit of writing everyday - drama teacher got class to write entries.
A2. Quite simply it's a matter of equity. Allowing ALL ss exposure to, and enhancement of, learning
I couldn't agree more - and what message is that saying for those who are not involved with techonlogy
Just how little e.g. GAFE training the students are taken through.
A3: Differentiation comes into play here: the tasks need to be made accessible for all.
Definitely! I was lucky enough to learn about it from at ULearn last yr & am thankful I did!
A3: I provide Ss with choice - do they want to create an app, video, blog etc... & then source free apps.
Very true - low decile is not an excuse for little tech or low quality tech
No worries, it's bedlam as always!
Good question - depends on the aim of the lesson/task! But we cannot forget about writing!
Thanks for this - I've seen it before but forgot about it! I've been using a diff one
This is really tricky to do. How do we ensure we're assessing the subject and not technology skills? https://t.co/UjpKXHQptn
A3. Ts role is to help facilitate/design learning where Ss have opp to use technology to apply own understandings, to create
I've started to do likewise, letting them choose their text and mode of response. A3
A2. I think the vertical divide is more critical! 12s less savi than 11's and so on!
but high decile schools use good results as excuse not to go on the digitech journey
Digital tech is learning a language. It should be treated the same way. Which language, not which device.
Can I ask what you think of the state rules for some of the internet access? Youtube for instance
I think teaching explicitly any technology students *have* to use and allowing choice beyond that?! Possibly...
Does low decile sometimes mean better access to tech? I hear of D1 schs with way more than D9/10 schs
That's why Aorere Digital is important, low decile yet hi-tech, high opportunities!
A3- this is something I am still working on to be honest!
A3 Find most Ss have smartphones (varying quality) so much Ts can use to create authentic learning exp.
No again if we look at the example...
yes you are right sometimes
Also not isolate tech but integrate in currclm- not just code funny cartoon but have real context for creating
A3. collect student voice, know thy learners
info about the fact that in NZ schools many Ss are left to just drill & practice rather that critical literacy
So true if they have enough memory and need no essays,c an do a whole course using them.
it's been my exp that that's where some of the best tech is!
Maybe both, but certainly this chat!
Well we have 200 students and 70% r BYOD... Im forever having to tell people we might be in the country but...
And the results are outstanding in that cluster
A3) I don't ever think about the differences, only the commonalities and the affordances each tasks brings.
health promoting schools!
A3. By locking Technology to the task or the learning until every learner has skills with the Technology.
When I started T so expensive to create videos, now a simple phone and an app like
A1 - In regards to teachers - reluctance/stubbornness causes a huge divide and it seeps through the school
A3: Set times when they can perform repetitive tasks and teach specifically how to use the devices for higher order thinking
It's been around for a decade and it's not common knowledge- why?
It's awesome at my school, how engaged all cultures become once given the chance.
One of the Dec 10 schools I relieve in only has 8 iPads for and ILE of 54 chn!
there is little point in being a "user" in my mind. Leaning is participatory. And personal. YOUR language. YOUR voice.
of course, but they still have some access (and it doesn't apply to many at all)
So true, my Year 11s all did their video assessments on wevideo!
In PE, many can communicate considerably well through dance and movement of their bodies!
that's a bit boring - just a modern digital worksheet equivalent!
A3: Its about application of learning. Learn something and now show me what you do with what you learned.
Also how used,I know schools with lots of tech, but may as well be typing on a banana
Hi mate, only just stumbled across the chat. It's arsenic hour here so might not be too involved
That might be a philosophical choice maybe?
Um I don't know what to say Tiffany, I would find that very, very difficult
We have very little blocked - all of my lessons are and videos are on youtube
That was exactly what the findings were! Particularly with low level learners Poor things
Possibly, though not my experience at my previous school.
Internet access is a human right. Like water and shelter. https://t.co/sTVKXNPcGi
Can I ask what you think of the state rules for some of the internet access? Youtube for instance
A3. Choice, creativity, & flexibility. At the end of the day, it needs to be purposeful & meaningful for Ss in front of you
Great point, we need to make sure Ts and Ss are using tech not just learning tech!
prepare for future or prepare for exams?
Just like the classes and students we now teach!
So would you talk to my Principal if he rang to find out about your flipped learning Danielle?
No, it's real tools in today's world that can enhance lng opts for S. Think how it's helped to connect social justice
A3 $ in right professional learning is key-imp. 4 Ts to understand the "why" & the possibilities https://t.co/AyHth4u8Hl
And creating not just consuming https://t.co/OhTD0Njcum
Great point, we need to make sure Ts and Ss are using tech not just learning tech!
No I could see why it wouldn't
Good point, I'm frustrated that in 2016,have to prepare students for two written externals.
cool how did that go? Mine recorded theirs on - was good!
Everyone does it's free and available on any device do you Google? https://t.co/oZjsRj7rXR
do tch and Ss have access to Google docs?
A3 - in a perfect world our 1to1 would solve this problem but it's incredibly rare for everything to actually work
Honestly, I`ve used hundreds of apps, and u can never keep up. So, ultimately, u r left with the language.
I call them "prosumers" they produce and consume.
No we have free access to everything here in NZ, I can pretty much use whatever
Why I also believe so important to start tech early as part of everything. Then less teach it higher up & more use
Yes! Our common future will down down to our thinking and creativity!
do you use the dipped approach for staff PD? We use edmodo for that - brilliant
also looking at it in the far north
Over half used on their phones, they found it easy and the results!
Volunteered at after school computer cafe - kids from low decile. Very computer savvy - scripting https://t.co/37OefEcJex
Does low decile sometimes mean better access to tech? I hear of D1 schs with way more than D9/10 schs
The language matches the sts passion. Finance, ok R. Data Science ok, R or Python. Art - yes, Processing. etc
haha I'm not sure I'm very persuasive :)
TT NEW ZEALAND 21:32

been proven that Ss having access & home supports them & their families to engage with learning
A4: We are already 1:1 and I would encourage everyone else to do the same, in the spirit of Telethon.
A3: Ts openness & willingness 2 share the innovative ways they use tech has & Class on Air
that would be not dipped lol
In life outside of school, it's integrated, why not in the classroom likewise?
References to decile always bug me.We're all the same,& our students are offered the same education! https://t.co/NJ3jeGTtcG
Very true - low decile is not an excuse for little tech or low quality tech
No he wants to very much and is looking for great examples and interesting learning
A4 Don’t actually think 1:1 is necessary with young chn. As long as enough bookable devices for 1:1 when needed
1:1 is good but that shouldn't be the aim. The aim should be for ss to create their own knowledge using the tec
A4. Depends on the vision and pedagogy of the schools, these should be tools not the focus of the classroom
So you're going to donate...wow! #
Low decile also build/make something rather than something finished/final.
Why not get your Ss to do the persuading - get some feedback as evidence!
A4: Not sure about NZ, but BYOD can have technical and social problems.
Exactly - plus Ss really like it, so engagement boosts & with that behaviour issues lessen. Win/win
get over it, its an equity adjustment
We've just started using Google Classrooms for our Staff Meetings, its okay.
yep - I know parents who love to watch the videos
Digital divide diff between those with chip on shoulder or those who use it to promote thinking https://t.co/tkdQEVIIb2
Nice work, in NZ, we're still tied to trad. externals!
.Sorry late. Special BOT meeting. A3. Plan for grps. Have 1 to 1 ipads but diff needs /range of ages & abilities 2 cater for
But that isn't true unfortunately. Deciles stigmatise Ss unfairly. & teachers
personal pref is BYOD, with devices available for Ss who don't have access. Allows personal preference etc..
A4. Engage with the community, what is their voice? Whanau very concerned about screen time and posture.
So true, music settle so many students yet some Ts won't go near it! #
Yes we try and convert as many people as possible to the cause.
A4. I wonder if we would be having this chat if we thought we shouldn't be moving towards 1:1 devices!
A4: We are 1:1. Doesn’t always solve the digital divide problems. Nor access. That’s an infrastructure thing. Policy Qs too.
Tech changes so quickly big expense for Schools to keep up if have to purchase equip!
Amazing article - you are so lucky to be there, amazing place
Nice balance Gail, that's where we heading at Aorere, should bet there next year!
That's where can make a difference- more tools to communicate
We've made the decision to spend more on the network over devices for this reason.
Yes I will. Awesome thank you!
Our school is moving to BYODD. Less issues/responsibility for the school, but still the ease of the same devices
A4. I think what all education sectors need to aim at is the best pastures they can create in order to raise the best sheep!
what I like about edmodo is how it pre engages staff in dialogue
it was in class, but its a start. NAPLAN online trials are currently happening though. We will get there!
. We still use google docs ( drive) as all can add & contribute share readily
Great point Matt. We got out network right and the devices came!
Some devices might not have the ability to do certain things i.e. iPads vs laptops. 1/2
With you can do that! : ))
Low decile have more access to sponsorship, grants. We have high quality tech in our decile 1 school https://t.co/CRDDiN14NG
Very true - low decile is not an excuse for little tech or low quality tech
Likewise, NZQA is doing some awesome pilots this year!
Also, like the uniform debate in schools, some Ss might not have "up to date devices", could cause social angst
Yes we just went from it. Im not so sure at the moment but I take a while to b convinced sometimes
Don't you think sometimes the school needs to encourage communities down a certain road if it's the best way
same - edmodo is the 'icing' in terms of interaction
A4 it's important to have efficient wifi connections - before making decision about devices - otherwise futile
but at times you are dictated to by where you exist. Geography often determines access!
We STRONGLY recommend Chromebooks but the students are so good on their phones!
A4) I teach 1:1,but can see affordances of BYOD, learning across a variety of devices. All or nothing though, not some without
A4 Devices should be school owned rather than BYOD up to around Y3 (above that open to school or BYOD)
Q4: BYOD is great it allows students to use a device they are comfortable with
Exactly. Frees up money to be spent elsewhere! Using S digital leaders helps to support Ts with transition.
so is it being used well for deep learning?
But the divide there comes when you don't have leadership willing or able to access that! . It happens!
Same here, smartphone and Chromebook for all students please.
Sorry lost in my own metaphor, meaning ultimately the speed of learning can only be increased by the skills of the learner
students must learn to control the application, not to let the application control them.
Yes and as my business manager keeps telling me, to keep the network solid is big $$$.
it doesn't have to - can recommend laptop or tablet. Ss usually no how to operate their device.
I think if we had BYODD my school network would collapse... and so would many of the Ts
Nice if all devices same - especially for maker workshops. Open, free. https://t.co/SEeT3K4P4g
personal pref is BYOD, with devices available for Ss who don't have access. Allows personal preference etc..
yes it makes sense but... there is always a but...
I used to work in area, and have dreams of going back, but not going hapen
I find almost all PD painful, I must admit. I love learning new things. Rare in one-size-fits-all PD https://t.co/4FZkVWaACB
do you use the dipped approach for staff PD? We use edmodo for that - brilliant
A4: I teach in a 1:1 environment and I honestly could not go back to pen and paper. Learning is accessible anywhere, anytime
A4 BYOD => obstacles-in perfect world-Ts get rich deep PD => leads to creative use of tech by Ss in worry free infrastructure
Great point. We're very fortunate with our Wi-Fi and fibre connections!
Be careful you don't end up marking the skills with the device?
I would like 1:1 ideally. Wish we had a cheap device like that tablet they made in India for schools
we do this at our school, with learners lease to own as they move on from Y4. Builds sense of responsibility
A4. It depends- 1:1 maybe would not work in our area yet- we have enough devices for all to use
I use Ss digital leaders to support Ts and offer plenty of training and support prior to imp -
I agree. And same apps. BYOD caused a few problems at my previous sch -some Ss had inappropriate games on iPads
Good point, that's where is so awesome, multi-platform.
divide is often at home though and will the school allow those ss to take devices home?
They are MY expert teachers!
. Definately 1to 1 but BYOD often means diff in types & quality & some cases Ss miss out as not all Ps prioritise Ss needs
Highlights who can afford a mac and who can't etc... https://t.co/KLvdxcdA4p
Q4: BYOD is great it allows students to use a device they are comfortable with
Wow.. I just want students to have access to the same opportunities as each other irrespective of decile..
Which is the issue we are working through for the 30% that are not in the BYOD program with us
I think thats a fear many Ts and IT departments face. But what if it became the Ss responsibility?!
Pedagogical change from what they get at Uni for a start
yes! I think year 9 is a good place for BYOD personally - although have seen it work with Yr6
I'm in HS so with teenagers, they're pretty quick learners regardless of device.
Q4: 1:1 ratio isolates the use of tradition methods still needed in education currently
My school was similar. In Y4 could bring own or use schools, but by Y5 they were expected to have own iPads.
Interestingly, it has been shown if Ss own the device, it is more likely to be looked after well if taken home
Yup our school made that mistake - rolled out 1:1 and network couldn't cope! https://t.co/V5g6cel2xX
A4 it's important to have efficient wifi connections - before making decision about devices - otherwise futile
A5. Just because you can - doesn't mean you should
Likewise, I wouldn't want to go any lower, no real need for 1:1 IMO.
Q: Would BYOD create a divide? Who has a device? Who has a more powerful device?
It is only as true as we make it, and to do so we need to break down stereotypes and stigmas :)
A5 how to use devices as tools for learning
I mean that for the answer to A5. Sorry I am a newbie here https://t.co/KnGjTDuhFy
Pedagogical change from what they get at Uni for a start
It is critical to remember that we as educators we judge in order 2 improve the person we have judged.Skills r about growth!
A4. Another question: What do people think about 1:1 in juniors? I think about balance between written and digital...
What about apple v microsoft v google? A4
No I dont think so - were GAFE and 1:1 iPads with our Y1's students
A5: Proper digital citizenship and how to teach it to Ss.
You're not the only one - so demoralising when planning great stuff only to have probs logging in!
yup... what's your 'but' here Jo?
A4 we have byod. Ok for geeks like me. Harder for less confident staff. 1:1 would be easier.
I'm not sure I follow... The operation of the network a S responsibility?
there are alternatives to writing, just sayin
Great q! I think up to Year 6, no 1:1 needed. IPads to Year 8, then CBs all the way from there!
A5: Design thinking and risk taking 101. Then play with some stuff. If it breaks, don’t use it. Show others what you learn!
but if Ss bring ipads or chrome or old comp or nothing not equity at all
A5: looking at how to integrate tech effectively into pedagogy. Need to know why before how!
That's a very polite way of putting, such distinctions!
A5: Use of Twitter - meaningful use! Understanding of Google stuff also...
Not exactly. Don't think parents shd have to provide devices for young chn. Not all are responsible enough
PD needs to be mix of personalized, strategic, data based - T owned/led
Google Apps for Edcuation! Sent from heaven and free!
Google Apps for Education
A4- Without enough T expertise the devices, methods & so S can't reach their potential
IMO will only be broken when decile system is. taught in low decile for most of career & looked down on for it
Otherwise students just turn off when they see fake.
Yes thats true- I've worked in digital schools and been the lone nut too at places...
A4: Yes. However, critical about Ss maintaining tool v replacement
Good point e.g. my Tab 1.0 can't run Android 4.4!
although they do collect a fair amount of data! No such thing as a free ride! :-)
it can work, again it's a tool in the classroom. We use devices for publishing & sharing
A4: none of them. Raspberry Pi, Debian linux. Unix everywhere. apple hardware ok (them laptops). https://t.co/ihi9KbEiFT
What about apple v microsoft v google? A4
GAFE is free and comes with unlimited drive space.
you're right, I think with juniors, 1:1 not as vital, but still think should be normalised for them
you cant look down on teachers at Manaiakalani!
A5 PD in linking tech, pedagogy and content is necessary - they don't work without each other https://t.co/J71rnhNHid
A5:SAMR! Its fine 4 Ts 2 use tech @ lower levels, but 2 get the most out of tech Ts need to knw how 2 use it @ a deeper level
We're 1:1 from Y1 onwards and our Juniors are all using Seesaw and GAFE with work online...
I don't know enough of the tech but that sounds like a nightmare. S protection issues everywhere. Data privacy.
No competition, no division.
Oh, I know that! But I'm in Welly & I'm talking non-teachers & parents.
.We are 1 to 1 but often Ss buddy together voluntarily. Like working together
Yes thats right Gail, it does work both ways I suppose
Fair point, the apps are pretty angelic, the company increasingly less so maybe.
Definitely a possibility! I prefer same device for everyone, but tricky when parents are paying and want to choose
A5 - You can have the best PD in the world but without a willingness to learn it is pointless.
We need to change the culture
A5. Agree. More exposure to the possibilities in pre-service, more sharing when in practice https://t.co/6TnYvYzxuQ
A5. Just because you can - doesn't mean you should
Not if the students see it as a privilege not a right.
But I agree, it would be cool wouldn't it.
I researched this during my post-grad really good stuff!
gotcha yes always issues but laptops are all loan from school, SEN have tailored programs to help e.g. talk2text
A5. Self building activities, that builds resilience in the face of failure & allows the building of empathy on global scale
A5.Hw 2find the endless opportunities-visibility in home&community, connections 2b made everywhere.learning doesnt hv 2 stop
GAFE should for sure be a compulsory course!
maybe…but imagine how much they would learn having to problem solve their own tech issues! May never happen.
would add chrome os - turn on dev mode and use crouton. Turns os into full os.
Fair point but for our school with 75% students on Android, the choice was made for us.
A5) GAFE 100%! For the organisation of lessons/resources as well as student organisation of learning/creations
another dig divide - those who have digtal literacy and those who don't :-)
our students can't get on the wifi on their phone so that would be equity issue
Not necessary. As long as enough devices for 1:1 when needed
Exactly! Or they become competitive.
working on that that's the goal
so did I! It's great to refer back to. I'm looking at the padagogy wheel at the moment too!
Not saying that! Just saying that when all information comes down one silo you only get one viewpoint of world
I don't think I have seen that one do you have a pic?
Why don`t teachers understand the philosophy of open source? Goodness me. Freedom and privacy and key considerations.
Coming in for the last 15 mins of
A5: How to use tools for collaborative & creative purposes. Seeing themselves as online entities
100% attendance rate for sure!
get students working on networking!
Exactly! Ts need to be confident and able to tech in the classroom
Of course, that's why we go in with eyes open.
we've not found that, our Sch devices are mac airs/minis etc so if you don't have device it's no biggie our r good
yes and that's important whatever suits the school - one size does not fit all after all
And the same type of device for all in the class. Frustrating if a class has 1/2 iPads, 1/2 chrbks
I know... next challenge, right?! :) My students do their hwk on phone app
SAMR Model yes I have seen this also very good!
A5 less pl on tools and apps. More pl on pedagogy and attitude to ongoing professional learning. the skills to try. Be brave
All teacher trainees should have to sit the Google Basics exam at the very least IMO.
We're 1:1 iPads - not sure about that with our Y7/8 maybe Chrome Books with reflection...
its going to be level 1 and 2 at Waikato Uni
does the school lend a device to ss who do not have one?
If they can use Wi-Fi for phones, there's a new world waiting!
Imagine wonder of proper conversations about tech use, rather than the mundane sharing settings
A5- So true! Start with SAMR before anything else. Every new needs 2 have SAMR litmus test IMO
Waikato Uni, now there's a great place...
A5: like all the best PD it needs to be ongoing and relevant!
That's awesome and critical for the Ts to be effective in the classroom,
if your byod guidelines are clear the tech issues are nil don't need to make it complicated
A5: Pedagogy. I know it sounds boring but the why is so important.
A5: computer science, hardware hacking, cyber security - defence/penetration, self reflection review https://t.co/JK2qct3mqz
and tech creation and application!
responded in another tread 😀
Didnt you just tell me to get over it Leigh? Many people look down on me, Im laughed at when I say 1A
I have never used 1:1 devices, wonder how they affect st-st interaction/collaboration.
Less glazed looks when you mention that awesome thing your Ss did!
Signing off for the night, thanks for helping learn the possibilities of tech and keeping me inspired for when I get access
There are ways around that tho- have to remove barriers to achieve equity
Keep fighting the good fight!
I have found that new tchs and student teachers use google apps regurlarly
Completely agree, my students are D2 but I expect them to be world leaders.
A6: GAFE tools are great, because can be used on tablets, laptops, phones... allows Ss with different devices to still access
TT NEW ZEALAND 21:52
1.
2.
3.
4.Parliament
5.
6.
A6: GAFE students can still use them at the library with the free internet on the computers if there is no access at home
A6: Cloud based apps are great, allows Ss to access anytime/anywhere!
I have found the opposite! I wonder if it depends which uni you go through?
Q6 Apps to broach divide in Ts in my last school: Google Docs, Popllet, Explain Everything, Book Creator. All easy to use
1A means nothing if the Ts and Ss are up for the challenge and believe in each other.
A5) I wish I started a blog earlier, it is so useful for reflection and also sharing of ideas and resources!
A6. Edmodo smashed many issues, creates opportunity for student driven learning cycle! Set/Source/Listen/Learn/reflect/Fail
Would love to but it would have to be heavily regulated. Blocked access to private info for example
GAFE helped remove barrier when Ss all had diff tools, Apple helps by providing best accessibility https://t.co/L1qzId9TiK
Google Apps for Edcuation! Sent from heaven and free!
Send them our way please. Many know little of GAFE and even Classroom!
yup! We were careful re byod roll out had our Ss present to show what was possible in yr2 and 6-unanimous support
.Mine sit next to each other on couch or cushions & compare/share & help each other. Jnrs 5/6 yr olds
I also use - we have a shared folder of resources and a class notes workbook - feedback for all
A6: To broach divide in Ts skills/knowledge. First 5 mins of staff PD each week: Share an app you’ve used this week
Great post, had a good look at a while back, pretty cool.
That's a toughie- how do we get people to want to change, to take on a ?
You can have the best guidelines in the world but an unreliable system will end it all. Ours is horrid
That's why we became GAFE-accredited, needed some standardisation .
Have to be able to attract quality teachers, can b difficult 4 low decile schools
Even 4 older students I worry about ergonomics eg iPad neck, etc. Balance is essential
devices are available for any S that needs it - not to take home just within Sch
that's a good point. New teacher from local uni.
Thanks once again for another great !
A6 I've found Google Apps have been a most effective strategy of bridging digital divide
Seems like a great variance, needs to expected from all Ts.
A6. My students are now sourcing apps themselves to do specific tasks and arguing about which one is best! Lol! Metalanguage
I built my own computer when I was in Y9 - wouldn't have been able to carry it to school though! :)
Yes managed to stay up past my usual bedtime, thanks for the chat
Very cool and real-life learning.
very cool! Well done Mark!
It is only a number, which in no way reflects the love, passion and knowledge our tamariki have!
A5: PD would also be dependent on expertise delivering teacher training courses
That’s where infrastructure matters almost more than anything. If you can’t connect, nothing else matters!
. So true.My saying "Be the best u can be ". Set high goals u can do it
Who's going to take them to the library?
lol no! Just has to be charged, print, connect, email, access chrome (think that's all)
Why support a corporation that has dubious privacy and tax issues? And not open source?
Dev internal network - mirror resources. Offline mode. Some os come preloaded with Wikipedia + more https://t.co/QCeTvw4YD0
Yup our school made that mistake - rolled out 1:1 and network couldn't cope! https://t.co/V5g6cel2xX
A4 it's important to have efficient wifi connections - before making decision about devices - otherwise futile
Thatis my Year 7s! Digital Technology class! Working on Logos!
Good point but the more lowe dec are high-tech, should help.
Not all apps work on both Chbk/iPad. Tricky if whole class doing something on a certain app.
I love how you use the word expect They do me proud every day!
Have to have for sure - best future proofing there is
A6 Communication & presentation based apps have also been successful - blogging, tweeting, movie making
This is my job at the moment - ICT Coordinator - I should be mentoring but I'm fighting reluctance
No jobs should be based on gender, skin colour or decile rating!
Quality teachers implies for me use of tech now!
school should provide devices.
have to say we've had some issue with our managed wireless (not our fault) been a donkey! installer screwed up
another great - #2 no less! Have a great week, look forward to next Monday!
Students will rise to and beyond teacher expectations. Need to expect .
But you can do same task on similar apps
Very true! Why is there not a larger focus on the use of technology in teacher education? https://t.co/LgT4x52AzL
A4- Without enough T expertise the devices, methods & so S can't reach their potential
I'm new to the concept. Thanks for clarifying it for me. No idea how schls manage BYOD
Being taken to library would be just as hard as lack of internet at home in some families :-(
thanks for sharing Danielle... so often the case. I:1 much more than just a computer for every student
I wish it was this easy. It SHOULD be this easy. Our network is so unreliable it is turning people away
how are you developing teachers' tech skills?
absolutely - Ts also need to say when it's dropping off - can't fix what I don't knows broken!
A1. It isn't about what they do, it is about the reasons for why they did it and how they would do it next time!
Have you devised a SAMR litmus test? That sounds interestingly useful.
good to subscribe to the KiSS model!
Thanks to all for a great ! Great talking to you all!
A6: GAFE has allowed accessibility and transparency. Looking forward to seeing what's in store beyond this
Thanks and co! some great questions and answers to mull over tonight. See you next Monday!
Definitely, how can tech to enhance Ls learning if Ts don't know how to use it effectively?
