HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Tonight's topic is Coaching Expectations. With colleges around the nation making decisions about their football programs, I wanted to focus on how those expectations impact and trickle down to the HS level #TXHSFBCHAThttps://t.co/WLf6SGJ4eV
#txhsfbchat I think the expectation has always been there as well. The problem is some administrations aren't giving coaches time to build programs they want results right away.
A1: I think it hurts the expectation of what HS Coaches true mission - teaching aspects of our culture that cannot be taught in traditional classroom. Quote Madden -"You can not teach leadership in a classroom, it has to be taught on playing fields & battle fields #TXHSFBCHAT
A1- I have consciously tried to separate what we do from the NFL- all of it. The College world I try to highlight the people that are at least trying to do it the right way. #TXHSFBCHAT
It puts pressure on coaches to win immediately. And gives them less time to build a culture. Which puts external pressure on the coach. Alot of them can handle it, the ones that can't coach and make decisions not best for the kids. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: I think it depends on your community expectations. Some communities follow the win now mentality while some want to win but understand not everyone wins state. Everyone wants to win or else they wouldn’t invest the time and energy. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Any HS Coaches got any of those buyout packages for only failing to win games, but kids all graduate, no discipline issues and run clean community minded programs? #TXHSFBCHAT
Agreed. I think the biggest impact is impatience. High school programs are not developed and players are not cherry picked like in the upper levels. It takes time to establish and build your program #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: the expectations can come from anywhere. In a lot of places the community has set expectations very year, but the expectations and standard that your team holds itself accountable too should come from within in my opinion #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Our Head Coach through collaborative discussions with those of us on staff. We retreat prior to the season to tack down any tweaks we want to implement. Ultimately, we trust his decisions and fall in line with his lead. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: It should be the kids & staff that are actually doing something everyday to get better as young adult men. community members & fathers someday. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: both administration and the head coach determine expectations of the program. Administration tells the hc what they expect then the hc goes off and puts in what he expects. All working as a team to get to the same goals. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1. I don’t bother paying attention to it because I’m always in a Win Now mentality. This way it keeps me, my staff and my players from getting complacent in the things we do. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: expectations must be set by the HC, but it is the responsibility of the assistants to enforce them and not accept anything below that standard. In championship programs, leaders on the team help ensure other players acting in accordance to the expectations. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Is this not an indictment on society as a whole. In the world of instant gratification and everyone gets a trophy, I think that winning has trumped teaching our kids to be better men/husbands/fathers #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I think everybody who has ownership to the program. The AD/HFC provides the mission and then holds the players accountable to meet those expectations. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I think everybody who has ownership to the program. The AD/HFC provides the mission and then holds the players accountable to meet those expectations. #TXHSFBCHAT
a2: I do.... with help in conjunction with my principal, AD and staff. Our goal is to graduate all our seniors, get as many the chance to play college ball as would like & win state. We aim for those things #Txhsfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT coachfisher_rp: A1: I think what trickles down is an impatience and a misunderstanding of the how programs are developed at the different levels #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Is this not an indictment on society as a whole. In the world of instant gratification and everyone gets a trophy, I think that winning has trumped teaching our kids to be better men/husbands/fathers #TXHSFBCHAT
A2. I think expectations are defined in multiple levels. Main Administration, Athletic Director, Community and Inside the program itself. The only one I honestly concern myself with is Inside the Program Expectations because those are the only ones we can control. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 - tell my guys that I am nothing more than the steward. The identity of the team comes from within. I of course will work to direct / navigate, but ultimately the culture is dependent on the players. #TXHSFBCHAT
@txhsfbchat A1) I think people fail to understand that good things take time history of great coaches tells us that (ex. Coach K at duke) he would not make it now, and culture takes time. We dont get big buyouts in hs either #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I left Administration out because I've been here 20 years -6th Principal & 5th Sup. to fast of turnover the buy into our program cuZ of our sustained success Community is double edged sword #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: My HC holds me accountable to make sure my kids are doing their part. The kids hold me accountable by expecting me to provide the best leadership for them I know how #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: My HC holds me accountable to make sure my kids are doing their part. The kids hold me accountable by expecting me to provide the best leadership for them I know how #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Adminstration And Head Coach. But I think as a staff you would want to hold each other accountable. Most of all you hold your self accountable! #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: One thing I love about being at a successful program like Steele is the tradition itself holds us all accountable. Of course, we answer to the head coach. But when winning is the expectation, it often drives accountability. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: You have a great responsibility teaching character to kids through a game. That’s why we’re in this business building young people in to men of character and discipline to help our society.#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: HFC is the Whip & Coordinators are the nurtures of young Assistants. ideally everyone should hold everyone accountable even a HFC occasionally needs to be reminded. #TXHSFBCHAT
The expectations of our football team are defined in our core values. Trust, commitment, attitude, and effort. Our coaching staff, seniors, and parents came up with it years ago! We're all in this together to build young men! #txhsfbchat#thehunt
A3: HC if he sees us not doing something the way he wants it done he'll tell us but he's also open to new ideas as long as it will help us toward our goals. #txhsfbchat
A3: I hold myself to a high standard but as a young coach sometimes you need a veteran HC or coordinator to help you learn what you don’t know. Thankful for some great mentors who help hold me accountable. #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT tbanks1906: a2: I do.... with help in conjunction with my principal, AD and staff. Our goal is to graduate all our seniors, get as many the chance to play college ball as would like & win state. We aim for those things #Txhsfbchathttps://t.co/M4WL1cq97m
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: A3: My HC holds me accountable to make sure my kids are doing their part. The kids hold me accountable by expecting me to provide the best leadership for them I know how #TXHSFBCHAT
The HC provides the vision and direction. The staff helps portray that to the athletes. In the best programs, players also police themselves and coach themselves. #txhsfbchat
A4: Do your kids play hard, are they doing well in school & are you creating men! That should be our criteria. Not are we 15-0 #txhsfbchat I can deal with getting fired for not winning, I just want to make sure I LOVE MY PLAYERS and from us they GROW!
A4: I don’t mind the pressure. I think it draws out the best of us. With that said, those that are setting the expectations had better really understand the ins and outs of what it means to be a high school coach. Many don’t. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4-expectations should be the production of young men that become functioning members of society. That’s the ultimate goal. But winning does matter it keeps you your job and the kids experience success which in turn breeds more success in other areas of their lives #TXHSFBCHAT
Obviously everyone answers to the HC. But, each member of the staff should hold each other accountable. We all have different roles within the structure of the team, but are all after the same goal. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: expectations for a high school football coach should be that he runs a program with a healthy environment. A program that is good for kids and good for assistants. And a program that is able to compete respectably in a 9/10 game schedule.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A4. Expectations should always be to run a first class program that treats kids properly. The expectation to compete and give the kids a chance to succeed each week. Be a program of class, dignity and character. Winning will take care of itself. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: whatever a coach tolerates is what the expectation really is. We can talk about what they are all day, but ultimately the bar is set at what actions we allow to happen. #TXHSFBCHAT
Should be are we creating men who will become productive members of society; do they have the tools they need to overcome the difficulties of life once they leave us. Too often, it is Win, Win, Win at any cost #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: coached 13 yrs in high stakes big programs in SoCal, Trinity League. I've coached no place on earth as tough as a small isolated rural town like the one I am settled into. They would expect us to crush the Patriots by 20, thank goodness those in power understood #TXHSFBCHAT
A3.. this sign hangs as you walk into our locker room.. I've always thought it covers the expectations and the culture surrounding the Destrehan program.. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: It has to be what's best for the kids. I love winning as much as anyone but I've seen too many coaches with a "win at all costs" mentality and don't work on anything with kids outside of football. I'll take L's if it means I'm helping players become better men #txhsfbchat
A4: If you’re in the business for self glorification and wins. You’re missing the big picture. Our society needs us to be successful in character building of young men. #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT txhsfbchat: Q4: What is the difference between what should the expectations be and what they actually are for a high school football coach? #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT ArkLaTex_Clinic: txhsfbchat A4: whatever a coach tolerates is what the expectation really is. We can talk about what they are all day, but ultimately the bar is set at what actions we allow to happen. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Thankful in those first 6 yrs I had my best Admin since I've been here. Community expected State Titles and did not care if delinquents won it, Admin knew my vision - Servant Leaders, Scholar Athletes and finally teams that could be in conversation every year #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: With the success we have had in just a short time span, we have a sound following. With that also comes challenges to please and many in the community have false reality of how tough it really is to win as much as we have! #TXHSFBCHAT
A5. We have a great community in High Island. They travel well and support our kids big time. When it comes to involvement, it’s a catch 22 situation because I would like community involvement but I don’t want overkill. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 - expectations run the spectrum of transformational and transactional - how closely a program truly aligns with either extreme dictates the separation.#TXHSFBCHAT
A5: community is incredibly supportive. The Gtown community is the best around at showing up and showing out for our programs. #THISISGEORGETOWN#BlueCollar#TXHSFBCHAT
A5: We're a private school so don't have the same kind of community involvement as a lot of programs since we have kids from all over the area. We have great parental involvement and parent volunteers #txhsfbchat
A5: Our community is very involved and supportive of the program. They host meals for the team, and many other events to help the kids and program. With involvement comes expectation to produce goods kids and a successful program #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Our community is very involved and supportive of the program. They host meals for the team, and many other events to help the kids and program. With involvement comes expectation to produce goods kids and a successful program #TXHSFBCHAT
A5. Our community supports our program. That support helps performance in my opinion. When the community makes it important, the kids can feel that. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5 cont.: I believe that we should treat our programs like small businesses the community. Get involved and help drive the local businesses through something that will bring all together. #TXHSFBCHAT
I definitely agree with this. Especially college coaches. So many hang the carrot of immediate playing time to their recruits their development is almost completely on the high school coach. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: despite unrealistic expectations they're good people once they figured out I was not leaving & cared deeply about their kids in program & long-term culture of place. They do anything we ask frankly- very fortunate & I've told we could beat Cowboys this year LOL #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachDingus: A4: If you’re in the business for self glorification and wins. You’re missing the big picture. Our society needs us to be successful in character building of young men. #TXHSFBCHAT
A6: Winning does cure a lot of things, but also getting the program involved in the community speaks volumes as well. Show the school and parents the team is just not playing football, but also contributing to the success of the surrounding community #TXHSFBCHAT
A6: Winning does cure a lot of things, but also getting the program involved in the community speaks volumes as well. Show the school and parents the team is just not playing football, but also contributing to the success of the surrounding community #TXHSFBCHAT
A6: Starts with a core group buying in and leading. After that it's up to results the better the results the faster more people buy in. If there's poor results it will be tough and the wagons will start circling #txhsfbchat
A5: community volunteers run all aspects of our games from chains to score & announcing. Panther Mom's & Dad's fix meals before games. Whole Community supports and helps put on our @BeachCamp16#TXHSFBCHAT our chief fundraiser
A6: winning. The reality is that everything improves with wins. However, I'm not just talking about winning on the field. Community must see progress in other areas off the field if not getting W's on scoreboard. Grades, behavior, facilities, community service, etc #txhsfbchat
A6: goes back to the saying, “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” If you invest in the community and the kids eventually they will invest in your program and you #TXHSFBCHAT
#TXHSFBCHAT I think making a presence in the community. Not just on the field. Show that you are part of the community then you can ask them to trust and buy into the program. Also we have to have the boundaries between player/coach.
A6: My school was trending when I took over. Our goal use to be get to the playoffs, we have made it for the last 6. We just continue to focus on player/personal development & let the chips fall where they may about football, but seeing good young men gets to trust #txhsfbchat
A4) reality is somewhere in the middle. As a coach, we must continue to pride ourselves on preparing with purpose...meaning , more often than not, success will soon follow #TXHSFBCHAT
A6. There definitely has to be a trust factor involved on all sides. Results trump everything. Walk the walk. If you have a true Program Plan, follow it to a T, don’t waiver from the plan regardless how rough it starts. (Cont)#TXHSFBCHAT
A6: by continuing to help raise young men that the community is proud of. Having seniors that serve as great ambassadors to younger guys and to the community go a long way. They are the culture and core of your program #TXHSFBCHAT
AH MAY ZING!!! Great job tonight coaches! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! And definitely thank you @twitter for 280 characters! WE definitely used them up tonight! #TXHSFBCHAT
