Good Morning #HackLearning! I'm Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator from NY. I'm tagging in @LitCoachConnect since they focus on connecting with mindful educators. Let's chat!
It looks awesome. I think, however, that Iâm going to practice some mindfulness and self care and read the archive after as well. Have a great chat. #HackLearning

Ever wonder why sooo many kids seem to have ADHD characteristics? Maybe they don't need meds - they need to be mindful to sort through all the stimulus. #HackLearning
Acting mindfully is doing what we do with intentional focus on whatâs around and inside us, letting our thoughts, feelings, sensations come and go without trying to preserve or avoid them. #HackLearning
A1: Mindfulness is the ability to give your attention and awareness to the present moment without judgement and accepting it as it is. It allows us to become HUMAN BEINGS instead of human doings. To pause. To be.

A1) When I am deliberate about being mindful, it's a period of blocking out my surroundings, focusing on me (thinking, feeling, breathing), then slowly allowing the surroundings back in. #HackLearning
A1: Mindfulness is the opposite of https://t.co/zItOUpv7ru means waking up out of autopilot and âtaking the steering wheelâ of our attention again.
#HackLearning
A1: #Mindfulness is the practice of looking inward and taking moments to focus on your thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors. In my classroom it is also something that is used to mean self regulation techniques #HackLearning#edchat#sunchat
A1: I would try to give an answer - but listen to
@klmbrb talk about mindfulness She is our Mindfulness director and doing amazing things for staff and student SEL #hacklearning MPS Talks - Episode 32 - SEL with Lisa White https://t.co/VdR6GsWymL
A1) I think mindfulness is being aware of ourselves and our actions. Thinking internally, reflecting, and putting out positive energy to the world.... #HackLearning

A1 My district held a full PD Day, focused on mindfulness. It was awesome. At a workshop on mindful breathing, the presenter shared this video. https://t.co/CVl8CfM6MK#hacklearning

A1 #HackLearning ... from my understanding working with colleagues, itâs the act of pausing to âbeâ in the moment - practical, thoughtful, responsive in kindness and empathy ... and by practicing mindfulness in times of peace it becomes automatic in times of conflict
On a practical level, mindfulness for me often looks like slowing down and taking a step back from whatever is calling for my attention at the moment. #HackLearning
Mindfulness isnât a thing you can point to, hold, or buy. Itâs a way of being in the world. Students can approach their learning, their work, their relationships, and themselves mindfully. #HackLearning
A1: Mindfulness is being aware of your surroundings & being deliberate with my actions because of it. I should listen to myself say that. #HackLearning
#Mueller is not interested in getting to the bottom of #Russia meddling, Rich The Kid during Sunday Brunch; Here is some #HackLearning: It is all about the President, and hurting or controlling him. #Mueller is the best weapon they could get hold of after the surprise election.
A1 Mindfulness is being aware in the moment. Also aware of how you respond to what is happening in the moment. Having the ability to respond rather than react as a result. #HackLearning
I use it to recognize and acknowledge feelings without judgement. We can't move on to problem solving if we can't be mindful of the emotions. I'm angry. I'm frustrated. This is really bothering me. #HackLearning
I think of two things - can you be silent enough to hear the blood run in your ear drums? Can you find yourself so deep in a moment that the rest of the world disappears? #HackLearning
A2 Students often try to avoid feelings of frustration, anxiousness, or embarrassment that come along with meaningful learning. We can help them notice these feelings as signals that something important is at stake.
#HackLearning
A2: Benefits of mindfulness - helping everyoine to slow down and focus on the present. We are all moving so fast with so much to do, see, & say. We need to foucs on the here & now - enjoy what is infront of us. #HackLearning
A2: It allows the classroom to be a place where we shift away from putting out fires to building an environment for deliberate thought and reflection. #hacklearning
#HackLearning A2: the benefits of #Mindfulness education are students who are better at self regulation, better classroom cultures, and personally I have found that engaging in #mindfulness activities with my Ss allows me to reset and be present with them #edchat#sunchat
#HackLearning A1: for me, being mindful means being present, observing and engaging when the moment feels right, and being quiet and reflective when life requires it.
These are sometimes the traits we expect but don't actually teach. Having a mindful classroom allows students to practice and strengthen these behaviors. #HackLearning
A2 mindfulness is a way to teach students to practice self-control and empathy ... by being mindful of others, our students can learn how to respond instead of just reacting #HackLearning
A2 Children can find internal safe spaces as they practice and learn to integrate strategies across their days and nights - shifts control to the child - our experience in #acps#Hacklearning
I think of two things - can you be silent enough to hear the blood run in your ear drums? Can you find yourself so deep in a moment that the rest of the world disappears? #HackLearning
A2) It can allow Ss the chance to calm themselves, think about their present day and make goals to make it better. For my building itâs focusing on the present location school over the past location Home. #hacklearning
A2 The best takeaway from mindfulness PD is to think of your toughest class/student/colleague. Then make a list of their strengths and post it so you see it often. #hacklearning#BePositive
A2 it builds a culture of trust and compassion where teachers and students have open lines of communication, understanding and collaboration in all that they do #hacklearning
A2: Mindfulness allows students (and teachers!) to be human, rather than robots ingesting information at school. It brings out the humanity in all of us. #HackLearning
Good morning #HackLearning Sandra from Ottawa, Ontario. A2. Mindfulness in the classroom allows us to really listen to our Ss & know where they are in their learning.
A2: Sooo many benefits in education AND life! Helps with managing anxiety, self-regulation, empathy, clarity, creating space, a safe environment for Ss and Ts... đđťââď¸ #HackLearning
A2: I often suggest my students consider whether they are "mind full" or "mindful." This often encourages discussions of anxiety, choice, intentionality, distress tolerance, etc. The conversation is worthwhile when setting the foundation for learning... #HackLearning
A2 For S's being mindful helps them identify the feelings that come over them: nervous -doing a presentation anger- mad at another Student, fear etc., When they can identify the feelings they can learn to cope with them #hacklearning
A2 When our teachers take a few minutes to walk Ss through a breathing, centering exercise before taking a test, Ss report feeling less nervous & they tend to do better #hacklearninghttps://t.co/YUpgYbz0qR
A2) According to Hattie, motivation and mental state have a .69 effect size in terms of factors that influence student achievement. Does mindfulness fit in there? #HackLearning
A2: Mindfulness is important for teacher and student. Teaching students to focus on the moment and not the situation that has been surrounding them helps them relax. For the teacher, it does the same, thereby also creating a less stressful situation for kids. #hacklearning
We tried it as a very small scale intervention w/our toughest who recâd most office referrals. Results were improved relationships & decrease in discipline referrals! #HackLearning
I would say so! We can easily imagine how #mindfulness could help Ss find their center to be appropriately motivated and focused on the task at hand. #HackLearning

I think the benefits on this list are more essential today, than ever before, due to the prevalence of screen addiction (says a #STEM teacher!) #hacklearning
These are sometimes the traits we expect but don't actually teach. Having a mindful classroom allows students to practice and strengthen these behaviors. #HackLearning
Employing mindfulness strategies in school/classroom can be a powerful stepping stone towards building emotional intelligence, self-awareness & the ability to self-regulate! But I donât think âdoing mindfulnessâ is the destination - itâs part of the journey! #hacklearning
A3 The 21 activities in EMPOWER Your Students are all about mindfully accepting uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and sensations in the service of values-consistent learning. #HackLearninghttps://t.co/gJkpGucobu đ
#HackLearning A3: breathing techniques are my go to, but I also love guided meditation, yoga/stretching, and open diolagues about emotions #edchat#sunchat
. 2 things- we used an app called Stop, Think, Breathe for 2 kids and they listened to the mindful meditations on it 3 mornings per week- then we tried a small âMindful Movementâ group. Exercise + mindful activity+ breakfast đ #Hacklearning
A3 Several of our Ts take a couple of minutes before starting class to have Ss close their eyes & focus on their breath. It's amazing how this small exercise changes the classroom atmosphere #hacklearninghttps://t.co/4rI3g5qUmo
A3: One basic mindfulness activity is simply waiting to respond in a high-stress situation. We donât want our Ss to be reactionary, but Ts can be some of the worst when it comes to this same principle. Being conscious of our bodies and waiting to respond is healthy. #hacklearning
A3: A designated âthinking spotâ where kids can go to get refocused or regulate emotions. It is never attached to a punishment. The goal is self regulation. #HackLearning
#HackLearning A3: Deep breathing, letting your mind wander, Zen colouring, singing are all ways to introduce mindfulness to Ss who are often over stimulated and stressed.
A3: One technique is breathing. Teach kids that when they are taking a test and they find that they can't focus on the reading to stop, take a deep breath, and gather themselves first. Then, go back into the test & mark the reading up in order to focus. #hacklearning
A3: Anything to be honest as long as Ss and Ts are completely in the moment. Zentangles, time lapse videos, origami, mood mandalas, doodling, glitter jar, watching bubbles pop! ⨠Just Dance is a favourite too! đđ˝
#HackLearning#MindfulnessActivities
A3 I used the Class Dojo Mindfulness activities for students. They were quite good and students learned a lot. I also used Susan Verde's book I Am Mindful #HackLearning

A1 #Mindfulness should be daily routine and ritual to center our thoughts and keep us in the present. We do this at the onset of #yoga and once again at the end. That would be something we encourage in education. #HackLearning
We have worked through process and find mindfulness focus to be of value k-12 for all ages children and adults alike - fortunate to have @TishJennings next door @UVaCurry#hacklearning

A3 my colleague used simple yoga moves starting with breathing in her class ... another started each class with 2 relaxing breaths (sts noticed, asked, & started doing it with him) #HackLearning
Hypothesis based on my layperson's understanding of each: Mindful habits can help people achieve flow states more often & more intentionally, rather than by happenstance. #hacklearning
We focus on these traits, name them, give examples of what this might look like, allow for practice. They are included in our exit outcomes. #HackLearning#OCDSB
A3. Mindfulness needs to be embedded in the school day, and also taught point in time when needed. We canât do mindful...it is something we become. #HackLearning
A3: Anything - anytime, anywhere to be honest as long as Ss and Ts are completely in the moment. Zentangles, time lapse videos, origami, mood mandalas, doodling, glitter jar, watching bubbles pop! ⨠Just Dance is a favourite too! đđ˝ BREATH!

A3 We have started restorative circles which have been welcomed positively by both Ss and Ts. Helps with building relationships and âsafeâ environment for risk-taking too. #HackLearning
I would say flow is when you are so into something that you loose track of all else. mindfulness is taking all in, but I think you have to have mindfulness to get into flow effectively

2. Obey teacher instructor respect not talk throw knife bn
3. Practice repetition not waste time ipad ps3 obese womans girlfriend

A3 When Ss are sent to my office to reflect on their behavior (we use restorative justice practices) I start by asking them to just take time to close their eyes & breath. Once they've calmed down & say they're ready, we talk. #hacklearning
A2 mindfulness is a way to teach students to practice self-control and empathy ... by being mindful of others, our students can learn how to respond instead of just reacting #HackLearning
I first heard of the idea of the 6 Thinking Hats from Marzano. Do you all think this is a mindfulness-type activity? What are your thoughts? https://t.co/SHRalOxRWJ#HackLearning
A3 This is a great fixed mindset vs growth mindset #augmentedreality project. Ss created Google Drawings of a fixed mindset & when U scan them, the growth mindset @animoto video appears. #hacklearning@hpreveal#ar
âWhen we walk into our schools, if we open our eyes, we see so much that is done for adult self interestâ How do we promote mindfulness when we won't see? #HackLearninghttps://t.co/K05Zna6Inc
A1 Stories matter because theyâre memorable. They tap into the emotions of listeners and allows them to make a connection. Adding a pic of my latest fav bedtime story 4 my daughter! #hacklearning

I really tried this with a group of 1st gr. this year. I would stop, take a deep breath &unt to 3 or 5 before responding. One time when asking what I could do to help them a kiddo replied, "yell at us, our T does". I hope they learned something different from me. #HackLearning
A3. Teachers can give students wait time when asking questions (instead of jumping in to answer), include brainstorming activities, create a classroom teaching & learning environment that reduces stress. #HackLearning#mindfulness
It's amazing how honest their self-reflections become once they find that inner calm & let go of defensiveness. Sometimes they're too wound up, so I ask if we can talk tomorrow when they feel less upset. #hacklearning
After an intense or emotional situation, I also tell Ss that I need a few minutes to think about what just happened. Helps model for them that we donât always have to be reactive and solve an issue in a second. Take time. #HackLearning

A3: having a calm and safe spot for Ss to practice their #Mindfulness techniques is essential, Ss need to use these skills individually as well as in a whole group. I stock my spot with clay, fish, some lavender, and anything else my Ss need #HackLearning#edchat
