Have U heard of the #Fliphunt? It’s a video scavenger hunt using @Flipgrid! (To try one, use grid code fliphunt; password Flipgrid) Try letting your STUDENTS create the Fliphunt lists! Give them a curriculum-based topic, or let them just create their own!

Hi everyone. The lurking learner. This will be interesting. I have been hired to write web content and I think I will need to change some minds first! #Satchat
A1: communication of the alignment with instructional goals and practices of the learning community already in place to prevent the “one more thing” and inappropriate focus on the device and not the learning #satchat
#SaturdayMorning#SaturdayMotivation#satchat
This is the first year that I have been awakened to realize that my opinion counts and that all of your opinions count. This is the year to make sure your voice is heard. Please participate. Go to town hall meetings
A1: Long before the implementation needs to be the creation of learning and teaching expectations, and professional development to assure it can be done.
#satchat
A1 Solid teacher training with the tech for oedagigy and instruction. Expectations for creativity, and deep learning not digital worksheets.Opportunities for exploration and #Risk#satchat
A1) Must haves are a willingness & buy in from staff & community to infuse the technology in everyday learning - then of course the infrastructure & procedures to see it through #satchat
"I have never observed a district that was able to policy and protocol their way to greatness," writes @MCUSDSupe. How central offices can best support teachers, students, and parents:
https://t.co/vzLE2M9lg2
Buy-in, ideally from school leadership. Ultimately, for maximum success, you want buy-in from the larger school community and families, too. #satchat A1
A1 A must have for a blended learning class is induction into a community of practice/ how to share. give feedback, & nuances of communication, like one to many(professional) as opposed to one to one (casual) #satchat
A1: Role out plan. In our district, they had "Parent University" nights where they would watch an informational video to explain what it would look like, then sign the user agreement. It seemed to work pretty well! Also, school based PD for T's & S's. #SatChat
A1: The number 1 must have for a BYOD or 1:1 classroom is a plan for keeping kids accountable, keeping them leaning (not Snapchatting or Fortnite-ing)
#SatChat
A1 Clear expectations for students with their devices. You also need to make sure that the technology for a purpose…not just for the sake of “going digital.” #satchat
#satchat A1 Good Morning from CT! #middleschool So important to have guidelines for when devices need to be closed! It can be hard to focus when you have the whole world in front of you via the internet.
A1 Besides the obvious hardware/infrastructure a BIG must have is ongoing training for Ts on how to use blended learning to improve Ss experiences. How can it deepen Ss learning? #satchat@Gregbagby
Good Morning everyone Chris from Atlanta, I am a film and video teacher. The teachers return Monday, so I probably should participate to get myself in the right mindset. #Satchat
A1: Able bodies to help Ts (PD) and tools beyond hardware ready to go that fit into curriculum and provide opportunities for Ts and Ss to create and interact with. #Satchat
If a district can get to 1:1 they need sufficent broadband obviously, but also trained educators to use this tech in meaningful ways with high quality of participation/conditions of access #satchat
A1 Prepping the 1:1 rollout with #PD on the importance of creating an #edtech balance of plugged/unplugged. We plan 2 show this video, Digital Dementia from @LondonRealTV as part of the PD #Satchathttps://t.co/Y2t51nyO4L
Buy-in, ideally from school leadership. Ultimately, for maximum success, you want buy-in from the larger school community and families, too. #satchat A1
A1: To keep it simple, teachers need to be proficient with an LMS - either the one their school uses or their favorite. The digital class needs to be built on the foundation of that LMS.
#satchat

Good morning #satchat! Up early to preflight my drones for today’s aerial videography experiments.. urbie from Arizona. I manage/design broadcast video PD for clinicians.
A1: Teacher training, solid infrastructure, clear expectations/procedures, and a plan for improving and changing instruction with 1:1 (not just doing the same as always but on a computer). #satchat
A1. A reliable schoolwide WiFi, for starters. A dedicated IT team to help students and teachers when outages occur. And (this last one is a bit more ambitious) a sound PD program so teachers can learn & understand SAMR. Not all tech use is created equal! #satchat
A1: T’s must think critically and strategically about instructional design so that the online components are meaningful, engaging, and rigorous and the non-online aspect includes movement & social interaction. Obtain & use feedback from Ss. #Satchat
Hi Brian - congrats on your new job! Nothing better than getting the chance to enter the a new year whether in the 1st year of a new role or after many years! #satchat
A1: Our teachers have done an amazing job with our 1:1 program. They needed training, support, leadership and that teaching in a blended model didn’t need to happen every day. The admin team and myself also offered to co-teach so that we could understand the change. #SatChat
I agree, but the "why" is pretty clear with tech. The scary part for staff is the "how". Is there a plan, are their people to help, time, expectations, ability to take risks and make mistakes. #satchat

A2 Two potential pitfalls of 1:1 in the classroom are too much screentime and not enough movement. Students should collaborate and move while learning.
#satchat
#satchat A1 For my audience.. a device, an LMS (Learning Management System) to serve up and track learning experiences. For union audiences, riders to contract. Oh, and engaging media. Can’t just port/repurpose traditional media.
A1 Good ? Greg! I would say first - not the tech - that comes later - must have 75% of staff at least who are on board with the why - some T explorers confident to help lead, develop, support peers, robust commitment 2 PD, not an event but a process of learning #satchat
A1 I think it’s important to ensure there is a relevant digital literacy class that all Ss experience... not just being told not to troll, but practical skills like how to properly research, in/outs of intellectual property, Creative Commons, etc #satchat
A2: expectations that all Ts advance at same rate, expectations that all Ss can adapt w/o support, expectations that there won’t be an implementation dip after initial success. Short answer: pitfalls = nearsighted expectations #satchat

A2: Make sure you have T's or S's able to help troubleshoot problems getting through our filter. A student tech team is a great way to do it! A separate user agreement for personal devices will keep them accountable. #SatChat
A1. We started the 1:1 program this year. I think it needs to start with getting the right teachers on board. Start with your most digital literate teachers and add more each year. Move other tasks to digital platform. I printed too much last year when a PDF works #Satchat
A2 A big pitfall is using the tech just for the sake of using tech. When it serves no purpose or it doesn’t allow for Ss to go to the next level with their learning. #satchat@Gregbagby
A2: avoid one and done PD. Support over time to sustain. Hold fast to expectations. Teach and research. Don’t live in the substitution stage multiple years. PD PD PD #satchat
Can't the "why" be delivered in minutes. After the "why" which is not difficult to envision with tech, the "tech" better be in the closet ready to pass out, in my opinion. #satchat
A2: With BYOD, teachers need to make the experience unique to their content with purposeful planning; otherwise, it becomes a classroom management nightmare #satchat

Poland has celebrated the 550 anniversary of its parliamentary democracy.
Very few other countries have as long of a history of parliamentarism as Poland has.
A2 Make sure students are staying on task with their devices!! You also have to make sure that students are familiar with their devices and the programs you are asking them to use. They’ll probably be good with fortnite/roblox/etc but that doesn’t mean they know it all. #satchat
A2) Pitfalls to be avoided are starting implementation without clear goals, expectations, and procedures for all parties. Frustration comes from inconsistency and uncertainty. #SatChat
A2: You can’t do the same activity, tech app, or program every day. Now that our infrastructure is solid, we were careful about the LMS that we selected. Don’t rush and jump on anything. Pilots must happen. #SatChat
A2: pitfalls of bringing devices into the classroom = the device replaces teaching and learning. That's a major pitfall. Devices need to be seen as tools to teaching and learning. #satchat
A2: Losing sight of the core instructional objectives. Very easy to let the technology control the instruction. Remember... the TEACHER is the most important asset in the classroom... maintain focus on the learning objective at all times. #satchat
Agreed. #edtech resources just like any other needs quality planning, instruction, and reflection. Maybe give them @fitbit and have them get steps while they have a device! #satchat
A2 Making sure the correct software is installed on all students and teachers devices, the internet/wifi not working, programs not responding. #Satchat
#satchat

A2 Two potential pitfalls of 1:1 in the classroom are too much screentime and not enough movement. Students should collaborate and move while learning.
#satchat
#satchat A2 Make sure there are rules in place for what happens when something happens to a device. Do #students have insurance? What happens if another #student damages it?
A2 Using devices just as you had used chalk boards or projectors before. They must transform learning not replace older tech. Use 1 to 1 tech for individual and group exploration and creation that couldn’t be done with a book and piece of paper. #SatChat
A2: Losing sight of the core instructional objectives. Very easy to let the technology control the instruction. Remember... the TEACHER is the most important asset in the classroom... maintain focus on the learning objective at all times. #satchat
A2. Don’t underestimate the importance of classrm communication w 1:1. Be explicit on how you communicate and when/ how students can reach you. #satchat
A2. Devices should not just become excuses for independent Google searches. Your students need YOU! And EACHOTHER! Human connections are the one thing that any technology cannot offer. Think of BYOD as a digital prosthetic. How can you use it to enhance their learning? #satchat
A2: One pitfall to avoid is that all students know how to use devices appropriately for the simple fact that they grew up in the digital age. Always focus on “I do, we do, you do.” #satchat
A2 Off task behavior opps can increase-- establishing clear norms & expectations are critical, but also helping students see value in participating in the community (face-to-face & online). #satchat
A2. Devices are tools in the instructional process. They are vital means to promote powerful learning opportunities—but not ends unto themselves. That simple fact is too often forgotten. #satchat

Kids need to see the power of devices & internet for good & learning & connecting.
We as teachers need to model that.
I always show kids what I learn online & show what I share on social media. They think I'm a celebrity

A2: Pitfalls to avoid
1. Just substituting paper assignments w/ device= 1000 dollar pencil
2. Blocking everything rather than using it as an opportunity to apply your DigCit curriculum
3. Limiting Ss based on our own knowledge- remember they're the digital natives! #satchat
#satchat A2 Perhaps it’s not surprising, but some instructors expect their learners to “Put devices on stun (vibrate)” or better, away. Given diverse devices & capabilities keep it simple. Task-based vs content delivery is better.
A2: Being too reliant on the device over the thinking processes that should be happening. Avoiding any task that is “googleable” is key to maintaining higher order thinking processes and using the device as a resource. #satchat
A1 - ed has intended tho not in every case to roll out tech w/o setting up conditions for success in 1:1 - I’m a fierce champion of the Sinek approach to not just telling the why - must congenerate it in dialogue w Ts and Ps and even Ss #satchat build investment not buyin
Agreed! Technology can be a gift and a curse in the classroom, if things aren’t identified early or predicted... best to be proactive in all situations. #Satchat
A2: Pitfalls to avoid

A2 I think devices should be a learning tool only when at school. I saw too many teachers allow games as a reward. I spent way too much time getting students back on task from a certain “Math” website that wasn’t. #Satchat
Getting over using tech just to use it. Try backward design, starting with a online platform that does something well, then build a lesson around it that. It needs to be meaningful and building the new literacies #satchat
It is important to provide different levels of tech integration expectations to meet the varying of abilities of Ts lead by their colleagues; hopefully, this level of pd differentiation will transcend to the Ss #satchat
A1: A class discussion on policies and procedures and a visual representation posted in the room; teachers need to think of instructional goals before tech tools #SatChat
Seems like there’s way too much focus on dangers instead of possibilities. So I suppose one thing to avoid is getting bogged down in the don’ts instead of letting students fly with the do’s. #satchat A2
A1 I think it’s important to ensure there is a relevant digital literacy class that all Ss experience... not just being told not to troll, but practical skills like how to properly research, in/outs of intellectual property, Creative Commons, etc #satchat
The problem with teachers using technology in the classroom is that it wasn’t around when they were in school. They can’t rely on the classic go-to teacher move of “this is how I was taught” #satchat
A2) We still need to emphasize the need for critical thinking when doing research, from the get-go. A pre-K teacher told me her students' idea of research is "Ask Alexa." #satchat
A3 - in our district we have a device committee looking at what are the options for our students and which ones might be the most effective in the classroom. Teachers and admin are on the committee right now.
#satchat
A3: You have to get parents on board - it's like "new math". It will be different than how they did it, so there could be some resistance to change. Educatuon and explaining why is key. #satchat
A3: Have teachers document successful experiences and communicate it using all platforms available to the school so stakeholders are/feel valued and informed #satchat
A2: A pitfall that some often experience in a 1:1 classroom is that all students must create the same project with the same online software. Choice is very important when it comes to technology #satchat
A2: When Ss are not given clear expectations of what should be done with devices. Appeasing students with the ability to simply use said devices or actually making them an integral part of the class #satchat
A3: Share what you are doing to pass on the "ideas" to spark conversations amongst staff. #satchat This can be done in many ways, SM, f2f, coaching, screencasts, videos, etc.
YES! Even if students are wizards w messaging, it doesn’t mean they know how to use email properly. Or Word. Teach them little things every day like centering the titles, etc. When you ask Ss to turn in electronically, show AND provide written steps.
#satchat
A3: Invite them in to see what it can look like (if they are hesitant) and ask volunteers to come in or do a Google Hangout to demonstrate how they use technology in their daily work. Real world connections! #satchat
#satchat A2 I am finishing up a paper for one of my summer #classes, but even for me, the pull of this Twitter chat is so strong. It will take me a while to get back on track. Good thing I started early.
#satchat A3 Get the parents on board. You know that weekly paper you find in your driveway every Wednesday? I bet they’d love pictures of your students using the #edtech & stories.
A2. Pitfalls to avoid include the assumption that tech is "neutral." Thankful to Dr. Ruha Benjamin for her work critically examining "the new Jim Code" #satchat
Also, a book I plan to dive into: https://t.co/j66oOTgmhy
A2 Technology isn’t instruction. Modeling how to effectively use it is and explaining why what students are doing is important is of vital importantance. #satchat
A3 Where I live, there is an organization called Mercer Street Friends which rehabs computers and puts them in the hands of kids who need them. @MercerStFriends#Satchat
A3 Having a good and ongoing communication with stakeholders is so important! Keep them up to date and informed about what’s going on. Be open to training them on what Ss are doing with tech. #satchat@Gregbagby
Kids need to see the power of devices & internet for good & learning & connecting.
We as teachers need to model that.
I always show kids what I learn online & show what I share on social media. They think I'm a celebrity
#satchat
A3. Communication & expectations. Parents & families don’t want to hear that children’s schools are becoming digital babysitters. Teachers might greet tech with skepticism or resentment. Clear & consistent onboarding lets everyone know WHY successful tech must happen. #satchat
Yes. Good point. Look at these pro athletes who are being held responsible for social media comments they made in high school. That is going to happen to everyone eventually. #satchat
A3: Invite them in to see what it can look like (if they are hesitant) and ask volunteers to come in or do a Google Hangout to demonstrate how they use technology in their daily work. Real world connections! #satchat
A3: I think it is important that all stakeholders receive proper training and resources. Sometimes we forget that parents need to be familiar with technology too- This allows for continued learning and support at home. Also giving teachers time to collaborate and share! #satchat
A3 Invite community members, parents, business partners in to teach a tech PD or into a classroom to show real world use of tech in the business world. Nothing better than the real thing teaching kids about real world issues. #SatChat
A3: Schools / districts need to also put out their vision / direction for technology implementation and provide opportunities for the community to discuss. We will be doing this in the 2018-19 school year. #satchat
A1: An administration team that delivers a clear goal and provides ongoing professional development, a positive learning environment that promotes change, and teachers who are willing to take chances! #satchat#PLN
A3: Involve stakeholders throughout the entire process, not just the initial planning stages. Use as an opportunity for family nights - students showcase/teach families and community. Ss and Ts update BOE #satchat
We have a meeting called “tech Tuesdays” where we focus on technology. I think teachers discussing the successes and failures in a PLC has proven beneficial #satchat
#satchat one way we are leveraging our stakeholders this year is by hosting some tech nights. Parents have expressed interest in learning about Google classroom, signing into our attendance system program, among other things. What a great way to spread the WHY as we teach the how
A3 begin with research, story narrative, get stakeholders to dialogue thru protocols that support all stakeholder voices, maybe start with 1:1 prototype rollouts as a plan , use @ProjectTomorrow speakup survey w kids staff parents 4 local input against national data set #satchat
A3: Numbers never lie. Collect the data & show the stakeholders the difference it is making. Stakeholders also want to hear from Ss directly & Ss today speak the loudest behind a keyboard.
Show the stakeholders the data & the voices of our Ss.
#satchat
A2: You can’t do the same activity, tech app, or program every day. Now that our infrastructure is solid, we were careful about the LMS that we selected. Don’t rush and jump on anything. Pilots must happen. #SatChat
#satchat A3b Intel microprocessor factories have this “Copy Exactly” culture. It’s where one site works out the bugs in a process. Then the peer factories copy everything. Not surprisingly it works right out of the box each time. Schools can do that too.
A3: In the simplest form stakeholders want data. If they have data that technology equals learning and a greater chance for students to make the system look better in the eyes of colleagues, media, gov officials then they move forward with implementation #satchat
A3 Bring parents along with staff and students. They also need to embrace technology as purposeful tools. I have seen so many parents of little ones using tech as a babysitter. #purpose#satchat
A3) I think it’s always best to include stakeholders as much as possible in the conversation /decision making..Also demonstrate & model tech activities with parents when they are in the building/ allow them to use their devices to participate in the learning. #SatChat
A3: Model ways to use tech while highlighting the features of the assessment or instructional design. Engage in or observe blended learning lessons that are well-designed for the learners. Share ideas!! #satchat
A3 Have a clear idea of how you want to implement it in your classroom and why it matters, share the work that students produce, ask parents for feedback, and keep the line of communication open. #satchat
A1: You must have a close “pulse check” on the learning! Know when learners need a more structured 1:1 or small group instruction and when they can be independent. #satchat
A3 Two of the greatest impacts of BYOB in our classroom were extending our community beyond our classroom & communicating with experts in our field of study as well as getting feedback from stakeholders about our projects/design created. #satchat
A3) I think it’s always best to include stakeholders as much as possible in the conversation /decision making..Also demonstrate & model tech activities with parents when they are in the building/ allow them to use their devices to participate in the learning. #SatChat
A3: Schools have really underutilized connections with business & industry.
If kids saw how technology is used every day for creating & designing they'd think different about how they use tech.
#satchat
A3 for career tech teacher, I think it is important for students to see how technology is being used in the real world. I had a student who was hired to do a task we did everyday. He had experience. #Satchat
A3: Numbers never lie. Collect the data & show the stakeholders the difference it is making. Stakeholders also want to hear from Ss directly & Ss today speak the loudest behind a keyboard.

So true Heather - and central instructional staff and ed tech staff and PD staff have to be a united force for supporting the changes that come w increased access #satchat
Yes! #edtech is a resource which can be used effectively or ineffectively. Planning, instruction, and reflection have to take place just as with any other resource. #satchat
We must be careful to not have #shineyobjectsyndrome#Tech isn't the answer to good education. Good pedagogy supported by the best tools is! Tech Tools can amplify and help, but we must start with the most important things. #satchat
A2: Just because it can be done on technology doesn’t mean it needs to be. Technology should be used to transform the learning not be a copy of old practices digitally. #satchat
The problem with teachers using technology in the classroom is that it wasn’t around when they were in school. They can’t rely on the classic go-to teacher move of “this is how I was taught” #satchat
A3 everyone knows the community plays a part in the success of 1:1 and BYOD. Get and share lists of free wifi at local businesses with students and families. Ask more businesses to make their wifi free and open or at least provide a guest access point. #satchat
That's the end of another

A3 Use the tools to CREATE for the community. My 8th graders will create websites 4 local businesses. Soft skills- interviewing the owners, asking 4 input, & then ultimately teaching the owner to maintain the site ✅ Authentic ✅ Reteaching- Highest retention #Satchat
Yes! This is the hardest part for me as an educator—as much as we “think before we post,” we all grow enough in a few years to look back at our previous posts with a grimace. How do we encourage students to be content creators while still making them aware of this? #satchat
I have found Twitter to be good to share amongst staff, but Facebook and Dojo as a communication tool are king. District wide, Instagram is 2nd in hits and views. Twitter seems to just be for professionals. #satchat
We can also use tech to connect students with experts via Skype or Google Hangouts. Students are highly engaged, enthusiastic to learn more, and they improve their questioning and listening skills. #satchat
A3 Invite community members, parents, business partners in to teach a tech PD or into a classroom to show real world use of tech in the business world. Nothing better than the real thing teaching kids about real world issues. #SatChat
