What is the expectation around aspirations at primary? We we understand what aspiring to be a ‘scientist’ means at such a young age? If they aspire to be a scientist does that mean they don’t aspire to be an artist or an author etc? #PrimaryRocks#asechat

#asechat@MarcNeesam I understood it was about getting children interested in #science from an early age: that it can be fun and they can solve real problems with scientific knowledge
Surprisingly yes! We sent out a letter to everyone asking anyone who uses science in their job to come in and talk to a couple of classes. We had four parents come in and it was by far the best bit of the week. Also so important to reach out to the local community #PrimaryRocks
Came across these playing cards @NSTA conference all the way from Australia “Play your cards right” playing cards and posters of STEM< careers https://t.co/nO3UIvbg0X rest of site worth exploring too #PrimaryRocks#ASEchat
Many ex students when they leave school have a single moment in their school lives that inspired them to follow a career or subject. How can we give every child such a 'moment' ? #PrimaryRocks#ASEChat
Totally agree. It is a false expectation that all children should become scientists. But is it false for them all to be given the chance? #ASEChat#PrimaryRocks. That is what concerns me currently with a lack of balance in the curriculum
Both topics would be good for some 'observation over time' activities. Rapid cycling brassica seeds can complete an entire life cycle in 14 days if you care to do something on the genetic causes of variation. #ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
A2 - The “It’s not fair” book by ASE is great in looking at types of invesitagion not just the fair test these including observation over time, pattern seeking, identify and classify and research using secondary sources #PrimaryRocks
Inspiring teachers are passionate about their subject, are good at listening, and do not close doors unnecessarily. Also being honest when you are not sure builds pupils respect. #ASEChat#PrimaryRocks
From 386 responses from STEM Professionals this is what they said their inspirations for following STEM careers were - 53% inspired to some extent by a teacher! #PrimaryRocks
Several questions there!
1. I do not think science as a subject is as important for future careers as for helping children to make sense of the natural world as it affects them now and in future #PrimaryRocks#ASEChat
I was inspired to be a teacher by my Biology teacher. The biology almost came second, we need the next generation of (science) teachers. Do you sell teaching as a fab job? and in the context of science? #primary rocks #ASEchat
A4 The best idea seems to be bringing people in, whether during assemblies or part of a special week. Thinking back I would have loved to have meet real scientists to get a better idea of what it involves #primaryrocks
