A1: Lots of preparation and remembering the classroom is a community!
Welcome and thanks for jumping in!
A1 setting norms and holding Ss accountable. Write in the + not -
A1: Teacher-student relationships are the foundation in my opinion!
A1: Prepare a plan before school starts and make sure expectations are known early on - and follow them.
A1: Be consistent! You don't need a fancy prog. Develop yours from others that u see. Be fair and consistent. It makes a difference.
A1: consistency and opportunities for students to self correct
A1 Engagement and ownership in classroom activities.
First need to do some community building with your class, let them be part of expectations, be fair & consistent
A1: Creating lessons to teach behaviors/routines. Teach them how to meet your expectation first.
Sequenza, 9th grade ELA from Brooklyn, NY checking in
Absolutely!! This can be a deal breaker. https://t.co/WdgrdeWhTI
A1: Prepare a plan before school starts and make sure expectations are known early on - and follow them.
Great minds! I just shared that too. :) https://t.co/XDIytRiVRf
First need to do some community building with your class, let them be part of expectations, be fair & consistent
A1: My first year I think I tried too much to be a "friend." Last year, I think I was too strict. Have to find the balance!
A1: Make sure that you plan to follow the same expectations. If there are no drinks/phones/snacks, that should be for everyone.
having trouble with my internet connection so may be a bit behind
Hmmm...this is a great reflection. Glad to see that you are re-booting your ideas! https://t.co/sdBs9055ee
A1: My first year I think I tried too much to be a "friend." Last year, I think I was too strict. Have to find the balance!
A1: For newer teachers... I know the follow through is hard, but to maintain order that follow through is IMPORTANT!
I totally agree that community feeling is key. How do you create community in the classroom?
A1: If possible, get on the same page with other Ts but don't compromise your integrity to do so.
You all are sharing great ideas! Let's get ready for Question 2!
Katherine, 4/5 ELA/Math, new teacher mentor, grad instructor, San Fran, checking in
A2: I planned to establish realistic routines with my AP to strengthen my classroom culture
A1: I go over the routines and procedures every day for the first two weeks. It helps so much in the long run.
yes a balance is needed, being "friends"doesn't always work as it can backfire, find what is right4 u & Ss https://t.co/g6XUw4v0uE
A1: My first year I think I tried too much to be a "friend." Last year, I think I was too strict. Have to find the balance!
Strong classroom management first comes from figuring out who you are as a teacher. What works for you and what doesn't
Q2:How will you begin to develop your Classroom Management plan? With a mentor, a colleague? Please share! https://t.co/2TrReNmhlv
A2: Our school supports PBIS strategies so all classrooms have similar management techniques!
Welcome to our chat! Great to have you joining us!
The biggest mistake I made year 2 was expecting them to already be where year 1 had been at end.
Absolutely have 2 find that balance! That is probably the hardest part of the first year! https://t.co/xLo7UpAMsN
A1: My first year I think I tried too much to be a "friend." Last year, I think I was too strict. Have to find the balance!
A2: Create rules together, making sure the language used is both understandable and agreed upon by both teacher and students...
Hey guys!! Thanks for jumping in! You all are doing SO much for our community of educator. TU!
I love that!! Get them thinking about how and what! https://t.co/ej8KHZJpoB
A2: Create rules together, making sure the language used is both understandable and agreed upon by both teacher and students...
A2: Agreement has to be made with your teaching team. All must be similar & done together. If all the same then no misunderstandings
A2:Ask your principal to observe a teacher in your building that he/she recommends.Watching good management is the best way to learn!
A2 I planned w/ mentor my 1st year. Now, I create procedures & expectations with my PLT so it's consistent with all of our classes.
A2: As a newbie teacher...I had to work with a mentor. I was VERY sure of myself, but not sure of my execution of strategies! lol
A1 A key point in strong classroom management is high-quality student teacher relationships.
A2 our school started to use last year, Ss had common language, great to work with grade level Ts
Q2: first decide what type of classroom environment you believe is best for learning
A2: There were times I thought sticking to my guns was better for Ss and learning than consistency with the whole team.
Awe...so well said. https://t.co/EcZKwWHgAd
A1 A key point in strong classroom management is high-quality student teacher relationships.
A2 - I would advise new teachers to talk w/ many teachers with different styles https://t.co/rPoxmS4CvG
Q2:How will you begin to develop your Classroom Management plan? With a mentor, a colleague? Please share! https://t.co/2TrReNmhlv
A2: A strong commitment to your team & your school's goals is very important. In truth you are never alone teaching, just reach out!
A2 Also need to work closely with planning time Ts & any other adult involved w/ your Ss, they need to know expectations the same
This is important. how do we do this? With kids only? Or maybe an experienced teacher?
Q2 Not sure. It will depend on when I secure an LTO. I hope the RCT would provide guidance on what has been put in place.
Yes! If you are lucky enough to have support in the CR, you need to be on the same page. https://t.co/fwr3RBNgaH
A2 Also need to work closely with planning time Ts & any other adult involved w/ your Ss, they need to know expectations the same
A2 the best behavior management plan is engaging, relevant lessons that kids want to be a part of. Start there first.
Not only talk, try 2 spend at least 20 min during your plan time observing different styles, good & bad https://t.co/39PVS6UYlL

Hey guys!! Thanks for jumping in! You all are doing SO much for our community of educator. TU!
very true, engagement means less negative behaviour
True! But...newbies need a bit more structure in my opinion. They need training wheels at the beginning. https://t.co/zHeol1t1oA
A2 the best behavior management plan is engaging, relevant lessons that kids want to be a part of. Start there first.
I am not familiar with PBIS. Can you give me more details on this set of strategies.
Good stuff, everyone! Get ready for Q3 in 30 secs!!
I agree. Bit important to remember the interconnectedness of behavior and engagement. Sometimes overlooked.
Agree! Establish basic classroom structure & procedures first, then layer on different approaches 2 lessons https://t.co/8skAd5YHAB

yes! When kids are idle or frustrated or disengaged, behavior challenges occur.
Q3:Share a favorite strategy you’re using w/students to build community + positive behavior in your CR. https://t.co/bv4c215sNX
A3: when students are participating in discussion, I allow the students to choose who gets to speak next.
A3: Sit down with students & have them describe their perfect classroom and make a list of rules and requirements.
it's a marathon;move slowly with mngment modeling at the beginning to see results all year. 1 "talk" or poster on day 1 won't cut it
Yes...love the way you shared that!! https://t.co/iWCkNi8KGe

Very well said! It's important 2 find a "mentor" & collab for your 1st yr! (good 2 do 4 years after, too) ;) https://t.co/QzArN9cXrQ
So good...let them grow in their abilities to lead. Awesome! https://t.co/3ci05t0X0y
A3: when students are participating in discussion, I allow the students to choose who gets to speak next.
A3: I started the House System last year with two teachers. We are starting school wide this year!
A3: Discuss consequences... Make a rule book (posters) have all sign it like a contract!
A3 Circle up! Morning meeting & restorative practices. Kids (and adults) need to recognize each other's humanity and connect daily
Awe...the ideal classroom. Let them build the vision! https://t.co/66khFM5zup
A3: Sit down with students & have them describe their perfect classroom and make a list of rules and requirements.
A3 I think my favorite (and new) strategy is spending the first few minutes of class just talking and engaging with each other.
A3: One I used in middle school: Set one rule: We will be active participants in a community of learners....
First saw the House System at RCA. It's similar to Harry Potter...sorting hat and all!
A3: Morning meetings are a really good place to discuss issues that crop up and allow the students to share concerns...
A3: Lesson where students brainstormed what the words meant: active, participant, community, learners...
This sounds fun! How does it work? Do you have a link to the strategy? https://t.co/Ys4byhSO1r
A3: I started the House System last year with two teachers. We are starting school wide this year!
My fave!! Woot! I'm a huge fan of the morning meeting!! https://t.co/CSM30kEj5T
A3 Circle up! Morning meeting & restorative practices. Kids (and adults) need to recognize each other's humanity and connect daily
A3: Showed Goofus & Gallant cartoons. Students made their own to highlight specific behaviors that met/didn't meet the rule...
A3: If the students feel they have a choice in what goes on in the classroom, it is harder for them to act out individually.
A3: Rule was posted in center of poster that all students signed/initialed to signal making a pact.
Such great strategies and ideas!! Let's jump to Q4 in 30 secs!
A3 I play silent ball https://t.co/mKH2dFicFr with a twist, person catching the ball says one interesting thing about them
Q4:What Web 2.0 tools have you found helpful to support your work with a CR management plan? Please share! https://t.co/ux0fYPQXLT
A3 Thinking of younger Ss, need to B consistent & practice expected behaviours, have routines Ss know & expect, makes Ss feel safe
Are you in a teacher preparation program?
fun morning song plays as Ss enter; this is unpack/talk time. when song ends and instrumental begins, all Ss know morning chat ends
You are spot on! Music in our school curriculum needs to get more usage! https://t.co/YlnAbFHRUq
fun morning song plays as Ss enter; this is unpack/talk time. when song ends and instrumental begins, all Ss know morning chat ends
morning song has been best way to start the day and transitions Ss into work without my having to say anything (takes modeling)
A4 favorites for CM would be , Remind101, and ClassDojo to manage everything for my classes. Just to name a few.
Q4: Ss brainstorm class rules on post-its; i collect and type ideas into word cloud; we look at class ideas/trends to develop rules
A4: There are lots! Some really like Class Dojo. They feel it supports them to get connected. But there are a lot more!
A4: behavior class dojo, work GClassroom/Drive, curric CK12
Now that's a very clever way to use web based tools with good ol fashioned sticky notes! https://t.co/wduk6sv5pC
Q4: Ss brainstorm class rules on post-its; i collect and type ideas into word cloud; we look at class ideas/trends to develop rules
A4 New Ts, if you're not using any tools, you should add some. I have a growing list on my website, https://t.co/a487QVhscR
A4 SeeSaw has been a great tool to engage both students and parents. Used in grade 1 and grade 4.

No. I haven't even started college yet. Will either January or next August!! I want to be a kindergarten or grade 1-3 teacher!
A4: Bring tech to your classroom and have them teach you, even if you know how to do it ;)
What is your go to for primary Ss?
A4: Use a tool that fits your teaching style. Maybe a Google doc to keep track of wins & challenges. Or speak it into Evernote.
Let's go for Q5...its SO important!!
Q5:As a new teacher ...how will you ensure your parents are on board with your Classroom Management plan? https://t.co/PCcuJARJZT
A4: With me, Google Drive is important! I share every lesson with all teachers. Why reinvent the wheel!
A4 Has anyone been told certain tools should not be used because of confidentiality. Not safe in the cloud?
A5: Let parents know HOW you will be using a CR management plan. Keep them posted right away. Recommend using to connect!
A5 it's important that parents know the plan and that they have a relationship w/you prior to any negative interactions
Yes...you have to check if the tool in Ferpa compliant as well as other areas. Remind is a good one. :)
A5: Make sure they know whats up. Have a "Rule book" that goes home with their child's signature. Have them sign it too!
Yes! SO important to share the CR management plan w/ the families! Everyone needs 2 b on the same page. https://t.co/3skYdNsGUs
