Monthly Twitter chats on topics of interest to educators who want to share ideas, build their professional learning networks, connect and converse about tech in NYC Schools.
I am very excited to use the reading tool Sean showed us Tuesday to help those I teach that have difficulty reading... Just have to play an figure it ou myself first #NYCSchoolsTechChat
#NYCSchoolsTechchat, hi everybody again. Clemencia from Washington Heights (MS in Manhattan, PSMS161 at @DonPedroAlbizuC) I'm glad to be sharing ideas and learning from you again
I've actually had perform the exercise where they lock arms and stand, in addition to being really amusing to watch it promotes teamwork #NYCSchoolsTechChat
#NYCSchoolsTechChat Q.1 This year I'm doing the All About Me Keynote Lesson from the Apple Teacher Site. It will also fill my bulletin board very quickly!
A1: I always start with a good read aloud...one that gets kids talking and sharing. This year I’m going to use What Do You Do With an Idea by Kobi Yamada. I make sure to build in lots of turn and talks and end with a community circle. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q1 we give them a learning survey. This year I will use @GooseChase to get to know students and for them to get to know each other! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I will also make use of flipgrid, getting a tent for the use of this in the class so they feel as though they have a measure of privacy whilst sharing

As I heard mentioned in one workshop... I have used hyperdocs for the first time this past year with mixed results, but I say to my AP never a fail always a need to work out the kinks, I really enjoyed using them #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: It’s currently in beta testing, but launching on January 1, 2019 Scratch 3.0 will be available. Excited to see what improvements they’ve made and how it’ll enhance and up the level of what my students can create! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: I'm getting a few robot mice from #DonorsChoose and can't wait to use it with the younger students. We are going to create mazes, collaborate, and program!!! #cs4all#nycschoolstechchat
A2. I’m looking forward to using #GoogleClassroom as well. I like to have all the work organized for the students. I can’t wait to test out the new features #nycschoolstechchat
A2 I think @GetKahoot is a hoot and fun to use. In fact, I'm doing a bday @GetKahoot with trivia about me. Would be cool to do that for student bdays too. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

#NYCSchoolsTechChat A1. Good Question. i like to have activities where the kids can talk and share something about their background and think about something they think or know they are good at and explain their thinking and think of an example.
A3: Go in the week before school to make sure everything you need is setup and ready to go. Test out a few lessons to make sure it works as expected. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3: I will tell them to start with one tool or app and then go forward from there. There's so many resourceful sites and apps to use that it can be overwhelming during the first month. #nycschoolstechchat
A1. I work in D75 so I send Home a survey or contact families through @remind to get a better sense of things the children like at home. I try to replicate items in class and work with kids together who know each other to share interests. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3: If you’re a Google school, learn to make the most of the features. Make a form for families asking for pertinent contact info, so you have it in a spreadsheet. Share lesson plans with teachers. Use classroom to have a hub for assignments. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I have always tried to integrate tech any place I can... One of my favorites is to have student research a battle or a major event find the facts, write a script for it use the green screen I have to replace now find proper backgrounds and make it into a news #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q2. I am excited to use @ClassFlow more this year. I also want to use more AAC technology in my classroom with students as visual models for reading and writing. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3 Get a spreadsheet set up with the names of all the students in each class along with school email. Keep it to help you easily setup all other accounts. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
#NYCSchoolsTechChat A2.
Kids by nature are artists. I like to incorporate activities such a projects where they kids can add their artistic talents. So in addition to @easel_ly I use Apple pages for students to create infographics (digital posters)
A4: Wish it were simple, but I see the entire school (800+ kids). I make sure to have a class list for class and ask them to use their name each time I call on them or they want to share. I respond back by saying their name. Repetition is key. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: We all rap "My name is ________ and I'm here to say that I like ______ in a major way" then everyone repeats it for each person. :) #nycschoolstechchat
A4: I print out my student list with pic from Skedula. I also make a design of my room (desks) and type in their names. Old school, carry that around with a clipboard. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: Text or email parents and ask them to send a photo of their child and include some of the child's interests. Put those into a class album. Here's how https://t.co/3UrqJe7xV9#NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4 Take a class photo. Print it out. Have each student write 140 characters about themselves. Have their names from left to right under the photo, and then their bios under that #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Re: Q3 @InnovativeEdu My tip for Newbies. Be resourceful. Find experts on certain technologies in the classroom and ask to to observe them in a kind way. Ask #NYCSchoolsTech people for help. They rock! Involve the kids. Find out what they like and go with it. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: I print out the class padlet page of the student's selfie and fact as well as open it up on the smartboard so they can see each other. #nycschoolstechchat
#NYCSchoolsTechChat A3. Select one app you feel excited about using and experimenting with. Try it yourself first from the perspective of teacher ands student. Be aware that it might be messy when you use it with students, be willing to take that chance. You will grow from there
A5. I have @NetSupportInc, which controls all the computers in my room. Anytime I need to, I can close all the computers with a click. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: I always show the students the show deleted posts in the Google Classroom stream so that they know I can see everything they post #nycschoolstechchat
Q1 we give them a learning survey. This year I will use @GooseChase to get to know students and for them to get to know each other! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5. Apple Classroom lets me navigate students iPads and lock them into apps. This helps my students with autism learn that once they complete a task, they get to do a preferred activity. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
#NYCSchoolsTechChat A4. Oh man that's a big one. Provide feedback to student work as much as possible and share it with students in class. Perhaps ask colleagues who had them for their names and know a little bit about their personalities.
I’m hoping to engage my Seniors with App Maker. We are CTE and they are creating businesses around software. Im of the mi set that cloud computing apps are the way to go for this. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
It really is such a versatile app. I love it. It has helped to increase my parent communication and get important information quickly. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

@bev_dangelo, @GooseChase, @remind, @RemindHQ
I’d suggest a newbie to try. I’d rather somone break a program or technology through attempting something than not try at all. And if in doubt ask! Or better yet google it. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: For me, device management and classroom management go together. My laptops are #’ed and I assign each kid a #, so I know who always has what device. I have a spreadsheet of this info, which also makes it easy to form groups & assign other jobs and tasks. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3 I would tell them that using technology as a teacher will make planning and designing 21st century lessons easier. I would also tell them that by incorporating technology into lesson for students will create a collaborative, vibrant learning community!!! #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: I would say ClassDojo is a good tool for classroom management. When they hear the "ding" when points are given to their avatar, the whole class is super alert and ready to move on to the next task. #nycschoolstechchat
A6. Our grading system, @ioeducation, has parents enroll separately. I send a newsletter home every month and can email any parent through this resource. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
For #3 become versed in one maybe 2 things and roll them out because you don't want to over do it and get frustrtaed if it doesnt go right #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A.6 Remind and Forms to collect data. I interchange between Google and Microsoft Forms. Google is easier to set up quickly but Microsoft has some features I like for more detailed answers. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A6 - I contend that Facebook is an EXCELLENT tool for parent engagement. Meet them where they are. Here is how one teacher did that for parents of first graders https://t.co/k8S1CqKNNK#NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5. #NYCSchoolsTechChat Any tools that would allow students show their work. Since Padlet requires payment membership I began using Google photos. I open a folder in google photos, ask the kids to take a pic of their work. That way we go over their work together accountability
A5 I’ve used allowing headphones and music only if they are passing. This year I’m excited to try Classcraft and the quests. As a former WOW Dwarf Paladin (lvl75) I think I can get my students to connect to the game of life and learning. (Yes I still have it) #NYCSchoolsTechChat
In particular I like the ranking option where the interviewee physically moves the answers in order of preference and I prefer the graphed response layouts. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5. I find that by engaging students in self directed lessons that utilize technology , there is little classroom management needed. It is all in the planning of the lesson and ensuring that all students are engaged. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
