Welcome to today’s LD Chat! Today, we’ll be talking about math and . Whom do we have with us?
I'm Joelee, a preservice teacher majoring in Special Ed and Elementary Ed at Grove City College in PA
Jamie from Montgomery County#LDchat
This is Dan with the Understood team. I'll be moderating the chat with .
We’ll use a Q1, Q2… format for questions. Please use the A1, A2… format for answers.
Kerri. 24. and learning issues. Don’t have dyscalculia but have low math fluency. Hi!
Thanks for joining! First question...
Q1: To do math well, many skills need to come together. Name some common trouble spots for kids w/ learning and attention issues.
A1. Processing speed was a big one for me and visual memory. If I’d known then what I know now, I’d have known why math was so tough
Q1. For my students, understanding the math language that goes along with word problems. .#LDchat#ED585q
A1. Multi-step word problems are big issues
A1:Keeping track of previous knowledge&tying it in w/ new knowledge. For kids w/ attntn probs, staying focused & persevering
A1 Working memory. The ability to hold onto information, then manipulate it later.
A1. Reading issues can get in the way of word problems, too.
Everyone seems to struggle w/ complicated word probs, but Ss w/ learning difficulties have even more issues
A1 organizing content on page. Lining up place value. Number relationships, too.
A1 Depending on if it's a word problem as well, your reading comphrension can make it difficult.
I have found that if I make my students use graph paper it helps them to line up the place value!
- Graph paper is great, so is looseleaf paper turned horizontally.
I have often issues reading big numbers. Commas are super important for me in that regard in figuring out what they mean exactly.
A1. And then there's math anxiety to top it off...
Q2: What are some ways parents can “sneak” math instruction into their child’s day?
A2 baking/cooking, music, dancing
A2. Sneaking math in seems evil >:]
Q2: All the time! I have a 13 month old, and I am counting with him already!
Oh, but it's good for you! :)
A1: I see students who struggle with reading outside of math have ppl forget about the reading inside of math.
A2 Road side animal games. Count animals, divide equally, mulitple etc.
A1. For the young ones, setting the table is a great way to teach 1:1 correspondence.
A2: Asking them to calculate prices while shopping, having them do measurements
Q2: Math is logic and having students problem solve at home instead of parents just doing it, would help.
I still need to sneak math into my day to day life. Severe Math right here!
true! Math is so much more than just numbers.
Q2 cooking, measuring (standard or non standard), sharing quantities, movement i.e., let's jump 6 times, now let's double it!
A2: It does help to show the relevance of math. Yes, you will use it in your day 2 day. Just need to see it. Point it out.
All the teachers who said I'd never carry a calculator around were wrong. Also pre-cell phone I actually did https://t.co/BVKieWrpIu
Great point! I find relevance is HUGE with some of the students I work with. Including myself!
A2. An allowance and asking them to manage their own wants and needs - whenever possible, anyway.
A2 cont. shopping, budgeting, coupons!!
thank god for calculators! :) Though it's obviously still good for Ss to have independent math fluency
SO with ya Aaron! I try to avoid numbers - but need to embrace them! https://t.co/dowBiJEHu4
I still need to sneak math into my day to day life. Severe Math right here!
we have some much technology-do we really need to focus on computation?
A2 (cont’d): I never had to trick my kids. I just explained how math fits whenever we used it with something else. They loved it.
I have legitimately never found this need. Ever.
Math makes ppl better thinkers Mental math helps w speed and confdence
Hard to believe but numbers CAN be our friend. I find music is really helping me understand basic math. Space too!
A1 Memorizing symbols, formulas, or procedures. But others involve probs with material reasoning and abstract concepts
A2. Reading the sports pages, following sports statistics!
Super loud drilling in this building + + sensory issues = bahhhhh.
I think we forget kids are mini versions of us. We like to know relevance. They do too. We just need to explain it.
A2 With money and allowances.
That's a message for those struggling with ! It's a challenge worth tackling!
https://t.co/gS1CqUGs8p
Math makes ppl better thinkers Mental math helps w speed and confdence
ABSOLUTELY! Couldn't of said it better myself!
Visual and Spatial processing disorder can cause problems w/ higher math and Physics.
Music always helped me - & Geometry. I understand best via real-life application https://t.co/56QcR3bXvk
Hard to believe but numbers CAN be our friend. I find music is really helping me understand basic math. Space too!
This is huge! I know this consideration is often missed especially as we move to higher order stuff. https://t.co/h2aOik5bq8
Visual and Spatial processing disorder can cause problems w/ higher math and Physics.
A2: all good suggestions. Another: Est. road trips in time and miles, use a paper map.
Real life examples and practical examples are so important for all Ss, those w/ and w/out LDs
Q3: What are your favorite apps and board games that can make practicing math skills fun?
A2 Math helps w critical thinking metacognition flexibility adaptability
Cool! I love hearing how others incorporate their interests to help them learn something difficult. Good for you Lyn!
Our school used to have First in Math and the students loved it!!
Sushi Monster is a really fun app for younger Ss to practice math fluency
A3 and making sure students stay as close to grade level as possible
A3: try playing simple board games (ex. Shoots & Ladders) backward.
My kids loved Sushi Monster!
Thanks - I love that too. So good to connect w/ other "grownups" who struggle. Kids with grow up, too! https://t.co/YnhXddSCpW
Cool! I love hearing how others incorporate their interests to help them learn something difficult. Good for you Lyn!
A3: Magic The Gathering, Settlers of Catan, tabletop RPG’s (D&D, Pathfinder, Star Wars).
https://t.co/ddtyMRzefk
Q3: What are your favorite apps and board games that can make practicing math skills fun?
A3. I'd like to include card games, too. War, solitaire...
back in the early 2000s they tried to get me to learn multiplication tables 3 times. All didn't work for me.
Agree! Well said Taking extra time to explain relevance is for Different Thinkers https://t.co/a72QpPmyvc
ABSOLUTELY! Couldn't of said it better myself!
A3 (cont’d): Those games deal with a lot of math & can cross a lot of interests. Math is mixed with interest for more engagement.
I have many students are in the same boat-at what point do we hand them a calculator?
so, I'd say nope. What's it matter now if I can't tell you 7x8 instantly? I've never found a situation requiring this
I'm a "grown up"!? Lol, Love connecting with people who struggle in similar ways to me.
Go Nuts (dice game) Pass the Pigs- both help with multi digit addition. Rumis for work on spatial relationships.
Me too! Ok - fun fact. I worked on the App Development team that created ! Crazy, right? https://t.co/EnBwMzICfI
My kids loved Sushi Monster!
EXACTLY. The problem was that @ that point the skill became irrelevant but I STILL did bad w/ application [ie algebra]
A3(cont’d): Heck, even throw in Monopoly, Sorry, Chutes & Ladders, Candyland. It’s all good.
You don’t even have to count beyond 2 in Candyland. ;)
Math might be useful if anybody ever played Monopoly with me, but everybody hates it. LOL.
A3 Don't forget dominos! Good for subitizing- recognizing number quantities without counting.
chat ant LD and Math til 1 join in if u can
I wonder when the construction workers go for lunch. cc:
A3 I just played darts the other weekend. Great fun, but a lot of . Could be a great learning opportunity.
Q4: What are some ways to help kids with learning and attention issues with money management?
Colours. All the colours. :D
Q4: What are some ways to help kids with learning and attention issues with money management?
The key is to get everyone to agree to altered rules. Cutthroat Monopoly rocks!
not always relevant but inspires critical thinking metacognition flexibility adapt Workout for the brain
A4. I am not sure how I got lucky in this regard but from like age 9, I’ve been super conscious of spending on things w/ value.
A4 I think the first aspect of money management is understanding the value of money, working for it, and how easy it is to spend!
A4: Have them take control of tracking their allowances and check price differences in the store to find better deals
I wonder if we can play monopoly together via an app? lol
A4 At the beginning try having cash on hand instead of cards. Easier to see and feel when you spend money.
A4: give them an allowance, teach them to save part, give part to charity and what's left is for spending.
A4: I say make ‘em part of the convo. An allowance is good, but also helping when they want to buy stuff. https://t.co/PSPwuYMGnJ
Q4: What are some ways to help kids with learning and attention issues with money management?
that's what I did as a kid. One suggestion (that my parents didn't do!)- let them choose the charity!
A4 I had a piggy bank growing up, and I found that helped, putting my loose change in. Again understand the value of small change
A4 (cont’d): If they want to buy something, sit down & go over the money they have. See if they can afford it. Talk with them.
A4 Role play shopkeeper with household items. Practice generalizing like 5 pretzels= one cracker. Catalog shop with mock budget.
Ma’am, idk of you want that. I become a different person. ;) But yes I believe you can play online now.
A4. One of my kid's teachers gave each student a checkbook and used it as class wide behavior management tool.
Q4: My daughter collects Monopoly games & our family plays on game night. My ten year old's math skills have improved considerably!
I have to head out. Writing an artile for the . Thanks for a great . Half chat, half writing. !
A4. I'm currently using an app called DayCost (after retiring several $ apps). This is all manual. https://t.co/59G7pLVIbo
A4. Give kids a budget and have them plan a meal using supermarket circulars
A4: for older kids let them "buy" stocks and follow the market for several months.
It is probably more tame with the app. I only get to play the computer lol.
Q5: Kids with have difficulty with numbers in a variety of ways. What are some signs of dyscalculia?
I AM MOVING TO A NON DRILLY TABLE! HOORAY
A5: preservice T, so not an expert on LDs yet, but I having trouble remembering and struggling to make connections w/ in math
For older students, demonstrate the meaning behind formula and procedure. Perhaps you can incorporate the history of mathematics in
A5 number sense concepts don't stick even with explicit teaching and much practice. Making change, using maps need work-around.
A5. Kids with dyscalculia may have lots of trouble with time
A5: no matter how hard a person with dyscalculia tries s/he can NOT memorize their multiplication table.
A5 not remembering Math facts altho that's somewhat generational
resistance to Math
A5. Even one to one correspondence can be tough
Q4: Good financial ed resources for a variety of populations at https://t.co/EeHNfOZjkI including transition from home to college.
most important for LD students is to see content as close to grade level as possible
Table is less drilly-noisy not non-drilly-noisy. But better.
A5. Subitizing - being able to identify the number of objects in a small set quickly.
A5 Telling time, left from right, taking and giving directions are overlooked aspects.
A5 number sense issues with magnitude, compensation, unitizing, part/whole and subitizing. These need to be explicitly taught.
Q6: What accommodations can help kids with math issues and ?
A5 we worked ALOT on efficient counting strategies with concrete manipulatives for my kiddo with dyscalculia. .
A6. CALCULATORS. Hollaaaaa.
A6: I think text-to-speech can be very important. It’s often overlooked, but very necessary. https://t.co/41Rf8bhOmh
Q6: What accommodations can help kids with math issues and ?
A6: more one-on-one assistance, and letting them use calculators, multiplication tables, and hands-on tools to solve problems
A5 Ronit Bird changed my approach to treating dyscalculia. Her website is loaded with great resources. https://t.co/Jx8WSZVOMg
A6 Less emphasis on rote/speed. Include applied math as well as history of math in the curriculum especially in upper grades.
Digital clocks and apps like
A6 providing first concrete support like manipulatives, then connect to visual representations, then more abstract.
A6 working the CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) needs to be utilized all the time during instruction. modeling is key.
A6. Highlighting relevant info in word problems
A CompSci student I work with made this cool add-in for Word that reads equations. https://t.co/2emywRvSJj It helps!
Once I sat in on ’s History of Calculus class. He told a sad story in there. https://t.co/PreqW7uXRP
A6 Less emphasis on rote/speed. Include applied math as well as history of math in the curriculum especially in upper grades.
A6 example base ten blocks, then drawing units and tens (dots and sticks), then just thinking through regrouping. Use strengths too
Good idea! Or just simplifying word problems
A6, Take the slow math approach. No need for timers or how fast Ss can solve. Why and how I care about...Not the right answer
Bingo! Focus on learning, not parroting. Understanding is fundamental (like reading).
https://t.co/wYZKMzM8iA

I legit think the most I know about math is that I know . ;D
Boom! Brilliance!
