A1: Communication is essential to relationships. Relationships are essential to education. If we want to invest our students, we need to converse and have meaningful discussion with them. #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Apr 10 @ 7:06 PM EDT
A1: Ss need to know not only how to communicate their ideas to their Ts, but also to each other w/out fear of judgment or failure. Communication is a crucial skill that is essential to be a functioning and contributing member of society. #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Apr 10 @ 7:06 PM EDT
A1: Communication is key because it is how our society operates. It's an essential skill that needs to be understood, if we expect for our students to be functional employees, leaders, husbands, mothers, spouses, brothers, sisters, community members, etc. #fcpslearn
  • Sara_Utecht Apr 10 @ 7:06 PM EDT
Hey, yā€™all!! Iā€™m hoping to pop in shortly!! Thx for the reminder, Michael & Phil! #fcpslearn @MrPStrunk šŸ‘šŸ¼
    In reply to @_on11, @MrPStrunk
  • lovtoteach Apr 10 @ 7:06 PM EDT
Without communication, we donā€™t build relationships. Relationships between teachers/students and students/students are the foundation that education is built upon. #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:06 PM EDT
A1 Communication for students begins with self. We call this self-reflection. This is their ways of self-assessing and self-creating. It is the self-talk that allows for the freedom to think. #fcpslearn
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 10 @ 7:07 PM EDT
A1 Students need to be able to communicate their learning and needs. Life Skill #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Apr 10 @ 7:07 PM EDT
A1: Communication is an important part of a student's learning because learning to express yourself clearly is the key to success many strategic areas in life. #fcpslearn
  • mjneidri Apr 10 @ 7:07 PM EDT
Simply put...because a degree of communication is required in every profession along with virtually every other aspect of your life. #careerready #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:08 PM EDT
A1 I completely agree with those saying that is is the gateway towards relationships and social interactions. #fcpslearn
  • Shapiro_WTHS Apr 10 @ 7:08 PM EDT
Craig from PA. In for a few until Ii have to go. #fcpslearn
  • MrBaskwill Apr 10 @ 7:08 PM EDT
A1: Communication is huge - far too often we see the negative effects of poor communication, so having Ss who are able to express themselves in a clear and positive way is very important #fcpslearn
  • Sara_Utecht Apr 10 @ 7:08 PM EDT
Both verbal & non-verbal communication leads to trust, which leads to healthy relationships, which leads to the willingness to embrace anything at all! #fcpslearn
  • MrsClark310 Apr 10 @ 7:09 PM EDT
A1: communication skills arenā€™t inate. Ss need to learn how to interact with the world outside of their circle of friends & fam. #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:09 PM EDT
A1 Often, we find students that have learned poor communication habits- not allowed to be heard at home, freedom of expression squashed at school. We must help them to unlearn this damage. #fcpslearn
  • MHSLewisHistory Apr 10 @ 7:10 PM EDT

A1 - 1. Develops great listening skills. 2. Key for reflection and feedback 3. Makes for clear expectations. 4. Helps is building a positive, high expectation culture. 5. Necessary for any adjustments in teaching and assessing. #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:10 PM EDT
A2 Whole-class discussion. Starts with lunch table talk examples, and moves into different versions of text to support claims. #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Apr 10 @ 7:11 PM EDT
A2: I love "Say It, Do It" with Legos at the beginning of the year as a team-building, communication game. Sitting back to back with identical sets of pieces, one partner has to explain in words only how to recreate a Lego structure they've built. #fcpslearn
  • mjneidri Apr 10 @ 7:11 PM EDT
A2: So many! The power of purposeful questioning, problem-based learning, two truths and a lie, math talks! #fcpslearn
  • Shapiro_WTHS Apr 10 @ 7:11 PM EDT
Sorry. That was a quick one. Iā€™ll try to answer later if I can. Picking up my kids. #fcpslearn

A2: I have never done it, but I know several people in the building have used PlayDoh to tell their story. Very #tlap. #fcpslearn
  • MrPStrunk Apr 10 @ 7:12 PM EDT
A2: I spend a lot of time allowing for student collaboration. I'd say my favorite strategy would be conversation. It helps us as adults and it helps our kiddos as students! #fcpslearn
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 10 @ 7:12 PM EDT
A2 Playing a game, especially a team game gets them talking šŸ˜€ #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Apr 10 @ 7:12 PM EDT
Hi Scott! Glad we agree. #fcpslearn
    In reply to @MHSLewisHistory
  • MrBaskwill Apr 10 @ 7:12 PM EDT
A2: We do some fun art where Ss had partners - 1 closed eyes and drew what the other partner described from a picture - really interesting to see how Ss conveyed what they saw in the picture for the other to draw #fcpslearn
  • Sara_Utecht Apr 10 @ 7:13 PM EDT
I agree, Mark! With patience, love, & modeling, it can be unlearned. Good point! #fcpslearn
    In reply to @LevineWrites
  • noel_hoffmann Apr 10 @ 7:13 PM EDT
A2: Think, pair, share; talk to a neighbor about your opinion; group collaborative work like literature circles... #fcpslearn

  • MrPStrunk Apr 10 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3: Giving them topics that do not take a long time to discuss, so then conversation quickly goes off-task. There has to be a better idea than "Talk for ten minutes about your favorite color." #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Apr 10 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3: We want students to communicate, and then we forget to let them speak. We need to continue becoming comfortable stepping out of the spotlight in order to let our students shine! #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3 Teachers often expect students to understand what they mean- to communicate. Good skills must be taught intentionally with opportunities to practice. With feedback.. #fcpslearn
  • noel_hoffmann Apr 10 @ 7:16 PM EDT
A3: I think a common mistake is not modeling methods to communicate with each other. For example, sentence starters help the students with formulating how to respectfully disagree without fear of upsetting the other person. #fcpslearn
  • MrBaskwill Apr 10 @ 7:17 PM EDT
A3: That the Ts drive the communication from top down #fcpslearn
  • Sara_Utecht Apr 10 @ 7:17 PM EDT
A2: I use a back-to-back drawing game. One verbalizes to her partner the picture she has in front of her. The partner canā€™t talk, only draw. Flip roles, this time the partner can only ask ?s about the picture. Stresses the importance of clear communication! #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:17 PM EDT
    Yes....too true! #fcpslearn
    • megan_hacholski Apr 10 @ 7:16 PM EDT

  • mjneidri Apr 10 @ 7:17 PM EDT
A3: Lack of purposeful planning. Questioning is an art - as is student grouping. All of which should be data driven. #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Apr 10 @ 7:17 PM EDT
A3: That it has to be high-tech. Some of the best conversations can be had while playing a board game or cards. Give them opportunity to build relationships with people outside of their comfort zone. Happens all the time here at home. #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:18 PM EDT
getting angered at limited open ended questions. We need to get deep with DOK! #fcpslearn
    • MrPStrunk Apr 10 @ 7:16 PM EDT

  • MrsClark310 Apr 10 @ 7:18 PM EDT
A2: If I play music when theyā€™re working it often brings them together- a convo, or singing. Sometimes dancing!! More comm than if they listen to music w earbuds #fcpslearn
  • MrsClark310 Apr 10 @ 7:19 PM EDT
Outside of the circle of friends is a big one #fcpslearn
    In reply to @MHSLewisHistory
  • LindaEdwardsi Apr 10 @ 7:19 PM EDT
A3 I think a common mistake is not having examples and modelling of a particular type of communicating like math sentence stems. Very specific type of communication #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Apr 10 @ 7:19 PM EDT

  • aschoenborn Apr 10 @ 7:20 PM EDT
A3: Not framing the conversation. Not giving time for students to gather their thinking. Not letting them write it out first. #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Apr 10 @ 7:21 PM EDT
A4: I tried @Classkick earlier this year and loved the feature that allowed students to "raise their hand" for anonymous help from other students. Need to use it again! #fcpslearn
  • MrPStrunk Apr 10 @ 7:21 PM EDT
A4: I enjoy using the question feature in google classroom. Allows students to submit a response and also reply to each other. It allows for authentic conversation, but I can also help supervise it to make sure positive choices are being made. #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:21 PM EDT
A4 Inquiry sessions that evoke emotions. Example: When students are learning about the events of Emmitt Till and questioning society as well as the constitution. #fcpslearn

A4: Forums to gather thoughts based on a shared digital text like TED Talks. Then ask them to scan the comments, select one (other than their own) that resonates with them, finally share what they found be attributing it to the student author, and answer so what? #fcpslearn

  • MrBaskwill Apr 10 @ 7:24 PM EDT
A4: Using good old Gsuite where students need to work together on the same doc but cannot sit near each other. Some use the chat feature of docs, others use messenger, and some even did hangouts! #fcpslearn

Iā€™ve had success with Flipgrid and my students also like Padlet. Teaching 10 year olds to have real conversations is a constant struggle with and without technology. #fcpslearn
  • mjneidri Apr 10 @ 7:25 PM EDT
A4: Many Ts at the elementary level are using Seesaw and Breakout. Love it! Padlet is one Iā€™d personally like to learn more about. #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Apr 10 @ 7:26 PM EDT

  • MrPStrunk Apr 10 @ 7:26 PM EDT
A5: Communication builds into these essential characteristics. Giving them space to communicate and collaborate now will set them up for long term successes. #fcpslearn

A5 Good collaboration requires understanding of social norms in communication. Listening is key. DC requires an understanding of safe and secure social norms in communication. #fcpslearn
  • _on11 Apr 10 @ 7:27 PM EDT
A5: You need to be able to talk through differences with people that you might not see eye to eye with. Many times, we do it via email or text which can break bad, quickly. We need to be able to advocate IRL, and digitally, in an appropriate manner. #fcpslearn
  • LevineWrites Apr 10 @ 7:27 PM EDT
I fear face-to-face will become a lost art unless we develop it in classes where students can enjoy success and see value. #fcpslearn
