I'm in! Been awhile; sorry for the hiatus! I value you and the discussions and other professionals!
-
Who else might be with us tonight? Let us know who you are and where you are from.
-
Debbie from Chicago's questionable NW side.
-
-
Hoping to , , , and build with you all!
-
Hi, Jonathan from the Eastbay of SF and jumping in for a few
-
Tidbit - said that is that quality in children who do not succumb to school failure.
-
-
Tonight let’s explore the possibility of “Building Mentally Healthy Schools with ”
-
Q1 Shouldn’t we strive to build student stories that are filled with successes? How might we do this? Share!
-
Some of us can be resilient despite school failure.
-
Hello ! Popping in and out. Very important topic! Lisa, tweeting from the Chicago area.
-
Hi, ! I'm just here for a bit - retiring early tonight, but wanted to check in. :-)
-
A1: Celebrate all student success in and out of the classroom
-
-
A1: celebrate successes, tell the stories every way possible including social media if appropriate, share with parents
-
A1 We need to help students identify opportunities for success; and create ongoing opps for them to succeed.
-
A1(cont) We need to help Ss self-reflect on their success and chart it/map it/shout it/praise it
-
creating opps for success are so important!
-
A1 Start with telling the student they have done something good.
-
Absolutely. And also help students define what success to them even means. https://t.co/bkr6l0Looy

A1 We need to help students identify opportunities for success; and create ongoing opps for them to succeed.
-
A1: We need to redefine what success is. Not just getting a great test score. It could be working hard/persevering to a goal
-
Q2 When students’ days are filled with frustration, or negative interactions, how might this negatively impact students?
-
It could be showing up to school
-
A2. I think we should celebrate accomplishments, but likewise celebrate effort. Growth is important too. Can't always be #1.
-
Q2: w/frustrations can come neg self talk and actions. Important for us to help Ss focus on the positive
-
A2 Impacts them badly. I was bullied and received very little encouragement. Left me indifferent in retrospect.
-
A2 It takes a million atta boys to "undo" one neg. Neg. frust imprints on the S "I'm a failure, why bother?"
-
Q2: They add up! Focus on creating a supportive, collaborative culture. Teach how to deal w/neg so it's productive.
-
A2. Challenges are part of every child's day, whether at school or home.Need to find ways to check in, level set, manage.
-
A2: when Ss have a tough or terrible day, they look for ways to not come to school or "hide" at school or in class
-
A2: Negative experience have profound impact on the brain...therefore the body
-
A2 I only had one teacher really encourage me, and that was when she was no longer my teacher.
-
We're starting to focus more on getting kids to bounce back from critical feedback. Got a few who want to shut down.
-
A2 I think that's the problem with Special Ed. Low expectations.
-
A2 Frustration and negativity create stress for people of all ages, which has profound negative effects in many areas.
-
For adults and kidlets! https://t.co/jyN9xtpYcc

-
glad to be here, haven't been for too long!
-
Q3 Engaging w/student in purposeful relevant ways is important! Share experiences of how you seek to do this in your schools
-
All my best, . Until next week! :-)
-
A3 For a while we were considering a move the suburbs. School out there where they focused on kid's interests.
-
A3. I'm doing schoolwide STEM challenges - its all about effort. Everyone a winner! Next week we'll be dropping eggs.
-
I also walk around and catch kids making good effort, sending postcards to them at home to reinforce what I'm seeing/expect.
-
A3 Connecting with Ss in school/@ events should be intentional. Meaningful conversation and genuine concern are critical.
-
A3: Introduce students to The Energy Bus and the Energy Bus journal
-
A3: greeting Ss daily, saying their names, lots of high fives, asking what they like and passions are, and smiling at them!
-
I think you are reading ahead in the script! YES, Intentional actions are so important! https://t.co/Pp0KeCC8c1
-
-
A3 Connecting with Ss in school/@ events should be intentional. Meaningful conversation and genuine concern are critical.
-
A3 I'd like to see more emphasis placed on current events and civics.
-
A3: we've started using . Teamwork, each Ss skills valued and needed. Huge accomplishment when they open the box!
-
A3(cont) Follow through/follow-up. I try to send a pos note to Ss after a rough day--welcoming them back, wishing a good day
-
A3 I'd like to see some emphasis on storytelling. Encouraging students to tell their own stories.
-
Q4 Communicating w/students to reach, engage, support is key! How do you ensure communication is present with your students?
-
Yard duties can really be great partners in these suggestions. Custodians. Bus drivers. https://t.co/qrLv2Ge2td

A3: greeting Ss daily, saying their names, lots of high fives, asking what they like and passions are, and smiling at them!
-
love it and love watching even adults try to collaborate and break out:)
-
couldn't agree more! EVERY staff member is part of team positive and awesome!
-
A4 That's really critical. Kid O is 20, & it seems like staff is just starting to be interested in what might interest her
-
A4 Consistent check-ins, appts to meet with me to share positive, notes to Ss, check-ins with Ts...
-
-
A4: Positive discussions with students, be visible throughout the school day if not a classroom teacher
-
A4: encourage all staff to have doors open, greet students, email students, write them notes, get out of your offices!
-
https://t.co/d1KlLACnGn
-
-
A4. Step one: leave the office. Don't just observe classes but purposefully engage students and teachers in the trenches.
-
Q5 Belonging at school is essential to keep kids coming back! Please share a variety of ways to help students belong.
-
Agree!! Out and about in the a.m., at lunch, class changes, etc.! Visiting classrooms! Be intentional.
-
. Yes! Multiple options for communication is key. Not everyone wants to chat 1st thing in the am.
-
A5 Offering a variety of clubs, social groups, activities--but nothing can replace genuine caring staff.
-
A5 Make sure they are not being bullied. I kept things to myself. My teachers seemed oblivious.
-
A4. I manage the communication from the district, so my columns focus on current work, reinforcing effort/goals/etc.
-
A5: offer a variety of clubs, lunchtime activities, after school events, and opps for students to find something they like
-
A5 Encourage kids to explore what interests them.
-
Q6 When out students feel , , they want to be with us. What works best for you to do this?
-
A5 Make sure they know they are special. They may not receive that message at home.
-
A5 Don't punish kids for not having art supplies. Let them draw or paint, anyway.
-
A6 LISTENING to them and validating if needed. Equipping them with tools to be successful and to problem-solve.
-
Thanks ! I will check the feed tomorrow . Time to make lunches/bed. Have a good night everyone!
-
Gotta run for bedtime with the kiddos, but thanks for the chat! Hope to jump in next time again
-
Conscious awareness, purposeful action, concentrated efforts, focus on building provides for Healthy living.
-
A6 Let them daydream. Allow them to express a sense of wonder.
-
-
-
-
-
Ducking out a tad early because exhaustion is overtaking me. Thanks
-
Q7 Thinking that each person can make a huge difference in the world of our children. What will you do to make a diff?
-
Looks like we ended a bit ended today, hope you all have an amazing week!
-
