Our game ended . . . it was very cold . . . our boys lost, but it was a season full of learning and growth. Can't ask for much more than that! #ohedchat
It's how I use it to effectively communicate my voice through text.
It's a lovely Ohio fall night 🤷
I can't get enough of election commercials 🤷
I would totally keep working if I win the Megamillions 🤷
#ohedchat
I had on four layers and was using those chemical hand and foot warmers . . . and I was still cold. Hot soup from Panera seems to have helped me thaw. #ohedchat
A1: So many essentials, but given today's polarized politics and the citizenry's general lack of historical knowledge, I might put civics and media literacy near the top of the list. #ohedchat
A1: Robin - IL, as Learning evolves...& we become Trauma Informed along with @ACEsConnection & SEL. Building Relationships, Compassion, Empathy. #ohedchat
A1: To become responsible, productive citizens. In fact, its part of my school's mission statement: to foster "respectful citizens in the community of Lancaster" #ohedchat
A1: Everyone can learn and the deserves the opportunity to do so and be shown compassion and care. And... we are always learning. In school and out in the world beyond!
Chris from Columbus, OH- jumping in for a bit and excited to LEARN with you all! 👊🏽
#ohedchat
A2: Teachers wear many hats. Teachers are meant to teach, but not just academics. They are role models to build a community of learners and global citizens who WILL change the world! #ohedchat#ItsWorthIt#kidsdeserveit@tyarnold18#MyOhioClassroom
A2) illusionist.
Teach how to think about content in a way that it is both important today and in the future when it may not be important or relevant. Regardless if Pluto is a planet or not, I know how scientists can study other objects to learn about our history.
#ohedchat
@mrsboydmath Loved this picture and tweet today. A student stretching himself & assisting his peers in their learning. Stethoscope in the group was cool too. #ohedchat
A2. Preparing the class of 2030 means a significant role change for the teacher.
Research from the McKinsey Global Institute (Stanford Univ.) says … #ohedchat
A2: Yesterday a student sarcastically asked me: "Isn't it YOUR job to teach me?" "No," I replied. "I facilitate your learning." As teachers we have to take a backseat & allow the students to discover knowledge on their own. No more old school 'chalk and talk' lessons. #ohedchat
A2 The role of the teacher is no longer the leader; instead, teachers should be facilitators of student-led learning. Allow them to co create their learning #ohedchat
A2: As teachers, we need to be guiding and supporting, rather than "imparting knowledge." It's different from what so many of us know from our own days as students, but it's a critical shift. #ohedchat
A2: Teachers are expected to not only be effective practitioners; they are increasingly being called upon to be strong advocates for the profession. One obstacle is time, as the hours of the statehouse don’t align with your typical school schedule. #ohedchat
Ts are now emotional builders as well...not only content deliverers. The role is also now more “pump” than “filter” as we look to build talent not just recognize it #ohedchat
A2 Teachers should not only think about differentiation to meet every single learner in real time, but they also need to think about the pace & path to meet every Ss needs throughout the day & away from school. Blended learning is here to stay. #ohedchat
A2: Responding to Admin., & Parents, collecting data, tests, and at the end of all this...building relationships with Ss. Helping Ss to become lifelong learners, navigate Problem Solving lessons! #Grit#perseverance#ohedchat
A2: Key adjectives for Ts: Engaging, inspiring, and adaptable. We must engage our S’s with meaningful, relevant instruction to master skills. We must inspire and tap into curiosity. Perhaps most critical, is adaptability. Some of my best lessons weren’t planned #ohedchat
Absolutely. I love being able to tell students, "I learn something from you each and every day, and I love that." Makes them see things differently. We're learning together. #ohedchat
Schools teach one thing: how to acquire that which is valued. Does your community value growth? Learning? Or just grades? What do your Ss tell you? #ohedchat
The answer to this is very telling, and potentially convicting. I suspect a good number of students, possibly including my own son, would say, "grades." As his mom, I'm much more interested in what he LEARNS than a letter on a computer screen. #ohedchat
A2: “A teacher presents the past, reveals the present, and creates the future.” I hung this quote above my desk on the first day of my career and it has stayed.
We see where they can go, believe it, and try to ignite their imagination of seeing themselves there too.
#ohedchat
A2: The changing role of a T is to counsel students as they grow & mature by helping them integrate SEL, character, & academic growth so Ss can make better decisions in their personal lives & be a valued contributor to society #ohedchat
A3: Just like all things in life... it’s about BALANCE. We must infuse technology when appropriate, but not let it dominate or take over what is best for kids! Technology can be motivating/engaging, but so can YOU with your teacher passion! #ohedchat@tyarnold18
Fresno Unified, the fourth largest district in California, held press conference showing off tablet all 75,000 students will receive (can take home). Educators need training in Teaching with Technolog! #ohedchat
A2 Ts can no longer play school with Ss. They must teach and model critical thinking skills, encourage creativity, different types of communication skills and collaboration #ohedchat
A1 My goal with my future students is to increase their confidence levels. I believe that a lot of issues with kids in education comes from a lack of belief in themselves, and I’d love to help wolf that issue! #ohedchat
I think your view is a bit oversimplified. I know Ss value their ownership in the learning process even if Ts, the School or District don't stress this. Ss value their learning and the community to share out what they know. #ohedchat
A3: it’s a tech world. Instead of putting phones away, let’s use our tools to connect with others and extend our learning. Admittedly, this is a growing edge of mine and I can’t wait to hear what everyone says! #ohedchat
A3: Technology is an awesome tool--but it is just one tool. We need to keep our priorities in mind when using technology and writing curriculum. What is it we want students to know, do, and understand? #ohedchat
A3) staying up to date on tech is as important for T as dr. Would you go to a surgeon who refused to use laproscopy bc "I'm not really good with tech"? 🤷Give students problems & let them solve--dont ban phones or Wikipedia or googling the answer. Ask better questions.
#ohedchat
When I think about technology and curriculum, what comes to my mind is just how critical the relationship is between students and teacher. When students know their teacher cares about them and their learning, that's the foundation for all else. #ohedchat
A3 Technology is a toolbox without a hammer. Teachers need to understand that technology doesn’t produce learning, it enhances it. Students need to know this #ohedchat
A3: I think we need to deliver the content in a variety of tech-savvy ways. Use digital media to engage the students. But we must be careful to not let the technology overshadow the learning. "Oh cool!" moments are great, but they're worthless if there's no learning. #ohedchat
A3. Even though our curriculum needs some tweaking , it’s our delivery, assessment and individualizing of the curriculum that needs adjusting. Also moving away from the notion that Ss only learn in school, educational opportunities are everywhere and anytime. #ohedchat
A3: We look for places in the curriculum where tech can enhance the learning and that will allow students to create to show what they know, not just consume the learning. #OHedchat
That takes us keeping up our skills and knowledge--not just of tech, but on so many fronts. If we're doing it well, we're going to always be asking the "how," because our world is changing so rapidly. #ohedchat
A3 Stay abreast & stay current. Actively use what we ask Ss to produce. If we ask Ss to do "XWZ", we should be proficient in doing the same things. We shouldn't assume Ss "know how to do that tech" if we are not willing to walk a mile & learn the same skills. #ohedchat
When I think about technology and curriculum, what comes to my mind is just how critical the relationship is between students and teacher. When students know their teacher cares about them and their learning, that's the foundation for all else. #ohedchat
I also think we need to be willing to let our students teach us. There are tech skills my Ss have that I don't--yet. It's okay for them to see me learning, too. #ohedchat
A4. Teachers will still play a significant role in the future classrooms. Not so in other industries. 50% of jobs will be automated in the next 15 years. #ohedchat
A3: Curriculum should not be adapted to technologies. Some Ss use the technologies, others either do not have access or do not use. Skills needed: Collaboration, Social Skills, Critical Thinking. #ohedchat
A3: Tough one bc ed has never had to think about such ubiquitous tech before. I never thought I would see summative essays completely written on phones, but have to recognize that works for many #ohedchat
A4: The "easy" answer is ensuring equitable distribution of funding--but the issues go much deeper than money. There are still so many social and cultural components playing into this. #ohedchat
A4: by making the most of the time we have with them in the classroom! Don’t give homework when students don’t have the support at home to do it. Be present in the classroom, be aware of who your students are and build relationships with them. #OHedchat
A4: It sounds simple, but we treat all students the same. I tell my 9th graders at the start of the year that I don't care what side of town they're from or what table they sit at during lunch. In my room, they're all equal in terms of learning science. #ohedchat
Understood. That assumption can be risky, too. They may not know all the potentials of the tech, or the risks, or how to use it in multiple ways. Great point! #ohedchat
A4: we must be diligent in tracking all student’s growth & having supports in place to remediate. We must assume nothing: increase access to opportunities and curriculum at all times. Intervention or enrichment periods for all - based on need. #ohedchat
Totally agree. Ts need opportunities for training but also need to learn how to connect with others. Even the best tech coaches won’t be able to service everyone’s needs. I have seen so many Ts grow in their practice just by developing a PLN
A4: most importantly, build relationships and rapport with students and families to further growth and engagement. These relationships will breed success far more than anything else. #relationshipsmatter#ohedchat
Q4: I found a recent report from TNTP to be very intriguing. https://t.co/H5Ibsz4GaV Their research seems to indicate the need is for "grade-appropriate assignments, strong instruction, deep engagement, and teachers with high expectations." #ohedchat
A5: Had the opportunity to spend today learning with John Hattie and Catherine Lassiter, and a key question was this: "What makes someone a good learner?" Do we know as educators? Do our students know? Directly connects to this question. #ohedchat
A4) allow for extra time on assignments that require internet to allow students without WiFi to get to a free public place. Limit homework. Remember that your class isn't the most important thing in any of their lives most days.
#ohedchat
A4: We have to put students needs ahead of the adults needs in the classroom! Some of our students don’t have the resources to get the help to they need. #ohedchat
A5: Someone who has the necessary skills and capacity to collaboratively find the answers they need to solve the problem they are working on. #ohedchat
These are among the traits of good learners we talked about today in the training I was in. The skills of being a good learner are what our kids will need throughout life. #ohedchat
A5: An educated person today must be so in both the head and the heart. Being a literate and active citizen is as important as engaging other with empathy, kindness, and respect. #ohedchat
A5: An "educated" person is someone who is capable of problem-solving, thinking outside of the box, and is a productive member of society. It has nothing to do with college degrees or level of income. #ohedchat
Education is something that can never be taken away from you. Experience is key and makes for an authentic way to learn and grow. So important #ohedchat
“Look” is such a tricky word. In a snapshot? Like anyone else. But in a film? An educated person looks (behaves) like they know what it is reasonable to fear and what not to fear.
A5) ability to Google a "fact" to see if it's true or not before sharing on Facebook. That's right baby boomers, I'm looking at you. 🤷
Oh, and harnessing creativity into something productive and problem-solving for the good of mankind.
#ohedchat
A5: This person has #perseverance & #grit who is also willing to accept #failure to get to success. “Learn, Adapt & Adjust...”. Education is ever evolving...iamlifelonglearner.com #ohedchat

A6: We need to continue holding students to high standards, and we need to give our students time and opportunity to use their learning in deep, authentic ways. It's not just knowledge, but what you DO with it that is important. #ohedchat
A6: Increase equity among school districts and populations. Increase development of school staff personnel and, perhaps most significantly, re-evaluate our priorities for measuring student achievement. #ohedchat
A6: A more integrated curriculum. Teachers and schools should be given clear guidance on how to collaborate content areas/subjects. Less departmentalization and more transdisciplinary learning!
Oh yea... and less testing, too! #ohedchat
I can't help it -- I love talking to students! You get real insight into their entire persona when they share what's on their mind, what they're thinking, how they process, etc. #ohedchat
Real-world, real audience kinds of experiences. Kids see right through contrived things. When it's genuine, they'll go far beyond what we anticipate. #ohedchat
A6) instead of "well, what can I do" as an ANSWER, start asking "WHAT CAN I DO?!"
My answer was to leave public edu & high stakes testing to educate at a parochial. Your answer may be different. But I think all of our Ss will be better off when we flip those words.
#ohedchat
A6. High performing countries emphasize collaborative, personalized learning student environments. They have a set of teacher-defined technical skills, social networking for academic discourse and uploading of photos and documents to the cloud. #ohedchat
Please join us here on #ohedchat next week as we take time to reflect on the strategies that help us be successful in our work, and the joys we get to experience in education. See you 10.24.18 at 9 PM ET!
As plugged in as our students are today with smartphones, social media, and the like, they’re arguably less connected than ever before. We would do better to take the time time to simply talk more with one another. Your point is very well taken! #ohedchat
