A1. The Dot has a relevant message for young children, preservice college students, and old teachers like me! Thank you from all of us! (2 sentences, sorry!) #g2great
A1: in a classroom with students of all types @peterhreynolds books show kids of all types examples of themselves. This is not always the case which makes these books so important. #G2Great
A1 @peterhreynolds@susanverde Picture books remind us of happiness and simpler times. I love reading picture books to middle school students who often think they're too "old" to read picture books. They end up having a blast #g2great

A1 @peterhreynolds Thanks for helping me to make my mark. Arts help us to comprehend and connect to our lives. Your work has helped me to explore and communicate this message. Thanks for sharing your voice. It’s helped others to find theirs. (Couldn’t do it in only one) #G2Great
A1 Peter and Susan are living proof that authors & illustrators bring a shared vision to life through their collaboration… and we’re better for that collaboration! #G2Great
A1: Perhaps my thank you sounds like a little prayer, but I am inspired by having read Peter and Susan's book. Truly "inspired." To be able to tuck a little little light, a little peace, a little wonder into a thirty-two page gift. Yes. I pray for more from this team. #g2great

@susanverde & I are "cosmic twins" - we believe in the power of story to heal, to change lives, to inspire... our latest I AM HUMAN is a book about empathy...
Greetings, everyone at #G2great - and especially to our guests of honor, Susan & Peter. My first graders call you by your first names because they know you so well. They have read all your books & feel like you are their friends! #G2great@susanverde@peterhreynolds
My favorite book! #g2great I end up saying that about so many books, my students often say, "you say that about all the books we read. " Well, I only read awesome books
A1- Your books brim with love, honour and respect for children and childhood. Kids get that when they read your books and that is why they resonate so deeply. #g2great
A1 #g2great Thank for your beautiful gifts of words and art. They have touched and inspired so many people. I begin each term with either Ish or The Dot. 🎨❤️
A2: Collective Curiosity could begin w/ author/illustrator inquiry. "What if we were to create our own class book of 'The Dot'?"
"What else could we create?"
There would be Ss "creating" every day. Art materials needing to be replaced OFTEN! Space for S work displays!
#G2Great

I cannot begin to explain how the children of Oceanside's PROJECT EXTRA program have been inspired by your books ...
@susanverde@peterhreynolds
If you just look at the joy pictures books are inspiring just at #G2Great - imagine multiplying that n the company of kids. We cannot EVER be so busy that we don’t make room for that kind of enthusiasm with kids!
@susanverde & I are "cosmic twins" - we believe in the power of story to heal, to change lives, to inspire... our latest I AM HUMAN is a book about empathy...

A2 The first thing I notice is the look of pure on the faces of teachers and children alike as the words & images in the book become the words & images in our heart! #G2Great
A2: Picture books spark our hearts and our minds through the beautiful mix of words and images. They bring a community of readers together to meet new characters, travel to new places and learn new information to enrich our lives without ever leaving our classrooms. #g2great
@susanverde & I are "cosmic twins" - we believe in the power of story to heal, to change lives, to inspire... our latest I AM HUMAN is a book about empathy...
#g2great A2: Often, our daily shared reading of a picture book leads to questions students want to find answers to. Some questions are BIG, and don’t have easy answers. Those are the best!

Peter and Susan, I sure hope that you’re feeling the #G2Great love tonight because I can feel it all the way from California! @peterhreynolds@susanverde
#G2Great A2: Love Collective Curiosity Experience! I believe this is the calling of all classrooms, to build a community of wonderers, explorers, writers. My Ss discover all three in picture books.
Peter and Susan, I sure hope that you’re feeling the #G2Great love tonight because I can feel it all the way from California! @peterhreynolds@susanverde
A2: picture books are an invitation to inquiry. What are our happy dreams? How do we find peace? What can a dot become? They help us think and wonder. What a gift for students of all ages. #G2Great
A1: Thank you for showing students they are special, unique, and add value by being themselves. ❤️Something that is very needed, especially in times we are living in. #G2Great
A2: I do this every year. Tables covered in picture books and we just read. Later discuss messages in the books BHH and then move towards our own narrative writing. How can we tell a beautiful story? What would it look like? #G2Great
A2: I teach MS and Ss still love looking at and hearing picture books read aloud. Provides a shared text experience and can build empathy and help them see different perspectives. #g2great
Huge welcome to everyone joining our #G2Great chat tonight - we are exploring "picture book power" - feel free to share the book(s) that power your classroom mission.
A2: I teach MS and Ss still love looking at and hearing picture books read aloud. Provides a shared text experience and can build empathy and help them see different perspectives. #g2great
A2: We begin our year in #Room407 with a dramatic reading of I WANT MY HAT back. If you don't believe in the potential impact of picture books at the secondary level, you've not heard laughter and tears, and gasps as I have heard in the sharing of a book like these. #g2great
A2 The picture book experience invites engaging collaborative dialogue as those sparks of curiosity spread new thinking like an ever-growing joyful wildfire #G2Great
A1 first the teacher who ALWAYS reads aloud every day and shares his/her Reading life. Then students who choose books and don’t want Reading time to end. A principal who reads to classes. Other staff reads to classes. Rich class libraries. A true community of readers! #g2great
Collective curiosity is the sound of students abuzz with ideas, wonderings, and what-ifs, and that feeling that a small idea started by one or two kids can turn into something incredible. #G2Great
My favorite book! #g2great I end up saying that about so many books, my students often say, "you say that about all the books we read. " Well, I only read awesome books
#G2Great A2. When students see the range of possibilities presented in your books, it validates their perspective. It helps them dream and risk curiosity.
A2 The magic of the picture book in middle school is really the opportunity to explore the deeper message that is sometimes lost on younger students. I have had the pleasure of teaching K-6 & after reading The Dot with 6th graders my heart was so happy. @peterhreynolds#g2great
A2:questions, wonders, what ifs and how comes, freedom to explore without adult imposed parameters, choice to create so their voices can be heard. #G2Great
A2: I wish our reading and sharing of Lemony Snickett's THE DARK was not so perfectly-situated with a national hurt, but I am grateful to the thirty-two page format and titles like this one that help us to see clearly to the light that is available if we look for it. #g2great
A2. Picture books at their core touch on common human emotions. A classroom can come together as a community because all members can relate to each other. A bonding experience. #g2great
Picture books can inspire creativity by allowing us to learn more about people different than us. For example, in The Water Princess, students can support their curiosity by exploring life in Africa as it compares to our life here in America. #G2Great
We are planning a Book Tasting in just over a month for high school students!!! Last semester we used novels. This time we will use all picture books so our students can create and inspire younger learners to read and learn!!! #G2Great@HighlandGaston
A2 A learning space chock full of books that reflect the lives, culture and ethnicity of all the learners. Structures that allow for multiple read alouds, partner reads, and kids reading books they've chosen on their own. This. All day, every day. #g2great
#g2great A2 It would look like opening an invitation & stepping into the book traveling alongside the character on a journey and coming together as a community leaving the experience better than we began with a lasting memory to share with others
A2 Picture books often help illustrate hope, kindness, joy with key words & images. Use that same creativity to build learning collectively. Allow students to read, write & illustrate their learning with others to make an impact, just like @peterhreynolds@susanverde do #g2great
We are planning a Book Tasting in just over a month for high school students!!! Last semester we used novels. This time we will use all picture books so our students can create and inspire younger learners to read and learn!!! #G2Great@HighlandGaston
Picture books reach all ages. We can share these powerful messages across the grades and across the subject areas. Read to my own daughter on the evening of her high school graduation! #G2Great
A2: I teach MS and Ss still love looking at and hearing picture books read aloud. Provides a shared text experience and can build empathy and help them see different perspectives. #g2great
A2 Amazing picture books engage a collaboration between authors, illustrators & educators for the greater good of our children! The domino effect at its finest! #G2Great
A2: Picture books can inspire creativity by allowing us to learn more about people different than us. For example, in The Water Princess, students can support their curiosity by exploring life in Africa as it compares to our life here in America. #G2great
A2 Because pictures are accessible to all learners, picture books provide lots of fertile ground to explore meaning making, emotions, symbolism, metaphors and so many other concepts that create joyful conversation when engaged. #G2Great
A2: Picture books spark curiosity about places, animals, ideas and people that Ss may otherwise never know. The learning space has is energetic and joyful, nothing neat and in rows - and access to further curious explorations through tech and open conversation. #G2Great
A2. Picture books at their core touch on common human emotions. A classroom can come together as a community because all members can relate to each other. A bonding experience. #g2great
A2. Picture books start conversations and appeal to different children. These books lead children to create their own stories and picture books using their imaginations. Children share their stories and experience through their work #LitBankStreet#g2great
A2: Messy tables, filled with books. Students looking, passing, talking, and writing down favorite parts and questions they have. Posts of "I wonder..." on the board. #g2great
A3, Make class books that are parallel. Encourage Ss to imitate their favorite authors. Encourage Ss to think of a "next" book that you would like the author to write and send that idea to the author.
#G2Great
A2 the characters are so relate-able so Ss can jump right into their lives and wonder, ask questions, and be curious. I am Peace is a perfect book for teaching more of the social/emotional curriculum what sometimes gets ignored. #G2Great
A2: Picture books are powerful to ignite story-telling about personal experiences!
In our classroom, picture books are mirrors and windows to our world 🌍
#g2great
Awesome, Roman. Those words are a guide to choosing great - and powerful picture books for the classroom. Let's all create a DreamShelf packed with positive books! #G2Great
A3 OUR enthusiasm for picture books is key. You can’t fake the kind of excitement that pulls kids into the experience. Joyful enthusiasm begins with US. #G2Great
A3: I love using multi-media to spark interest. Play a book trailer, show a movie clip that demonstrates a concept and pair fiction with non-fiction to make even more connections. @Wonderopolis is wonderful for this! #g2great
A2: We had an amazing convo abt family, immigration & identity during picture walk of A Different Pond that shows vast layers within picture books #g2great
a3: The reading of books over and over again and allowing time and space for talk and response. We notice something different each time. Just the words, Say something. #g2great
A1: Our 1st graders' lives are forever changed by your gifts of sharing huge concepts through simply-magical words and intricate illustrations. #G2great@susanverde@peterhreynolds
Picture books allow us to access and learn, even when we are by ourselves, we are part of a bigger group. We experience the story with the characters & with all those who have read the book. The conversations that picture books inspire is amazing & can lead us to action. #G2Great
A3: use picture books to spark passion projects...what are students passionate about and how do they want to spread their message? Not only through picture books but open up the possibilities of any kind of art...writing, music, art, poetry #G2Great
A2: picture books get all of us talking. Sharing, thinking, exploring, and of course feeling connected to others. Conversation is key and picture books start the conversation. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A3: Leave time and space for discussions, inquiry and exploration. Carve out open-ended project or research time whenever possible & be on the look out for opportunities to pique and cultivate curiosity. #G2Great
We know that books can/should serve as mirrors & windows into readers lives. A picture book can bring a community of curious minds together to discover & foster empathy & compassion! #g2great
A3: I like the idea of covering the covers. Mystery books, then let them discover and make connections without the title or cover. I might try that... #G2Great
#G2Great Share our own favorite picture books! Have other adults do the same! Increase your own classroom library collection of picture books! Inspire and encourage students to create their own!!! #authenticaudiences@HighlandGaston
A3: become ‘friends’ with mentor authors. Let students explore the possibilities of trying to write like an author they admire. Especially with the little guys, it helps them discover their own voice #G2Great
Picture Books are not "intimidating" for children. They are welcoming and comfortable for every reader, new or old, to dive in and explore #G2Great#kellerliteracy
A2: Accessibility of the language of pictures to help all ss engage & create space where their way of seeing is valued & recognized. They notice SO much & I make sure to tell them how amazing that is! #g2great
A3: Give Ss access to books without limitation throughout the school day, reading for enjoyment should not be contained to a timed segment in a schedule, and by not using “you can’t get a book today” as a behavior mgmt tool. #G2Great
A3: In order to fan the flames of reading and wonder, one must be aware of the "bellow." An open book BELOW the face of a mentor reader ignites and tends the flame with each turn of the page. This is the perfect triangle. A shared fire. One reader, two hands, one book. #g2great
Awesome, Roman. Those words are a guide to choosing great - and powerful picture books for the classroom. Let's all create a DreamShelf packed with positive books! #G2Great
ISH sparked a love for reading in one of my students who told me at the beginning of the year, "You won't find a book that I will like" #G2Great#kellerliteracy
A3 Nothing fancy needed. My enthusiasm and the time we spend reading picture books is all that my students need. The more we read them, the more excited I (and my students) become #g2great
A3:Read to your Ss multiple times throughout the day, from a variety of genres, encourage Ss to write their own masterpieces. Fight for independent reading time with student selected texts. #G2Great
A3 I always have objects, especially from nature, that support and nurture curiosity and wonder about a PB topic. Can't assume kids are familiar things. #G2great
#g2great Celebrate books and reading, model the transformational power words and books can make in our lives. Line the shelves with multiple diverse books, promote books, entice students into new genres and series, share your own 💜 for books
A2 I have some fav pbs that we read again and again as a class. I loop my Ss so this is my 2nd year with them. It is amazing how much is contained in such small books and how as the children grow, so many new meanings gleaned from same bk! #g2great
There are a few books that always make me cry when I read them aloud to my students- I love that my students get to see how powerful books can be! #g2great
A3: relate the book to our own personal experiences and lead the students to write about them. Create class books with the same theme so students can make the connections into how we are all diff and yet the same. #g2great
A3: In order to fan the flames of reading and wonder, one must be aware of the "bellow." An open book BELOW the face of a mentor reader ignites and tends the flame with each turn of the page. This is the perfect triangle. A shared fire. One reader, two hands, one book. #g2great
A3 We fan those flame when we launch an investigatory experience through authors/illustrator studies or sharing related texts that continue to lift excitement! #G2Great
A3. Author studies canbreally get students hooked -- featuring a variety of authors for diverse learners (young children and preservice teachers both love author studies!) #g2great
A3 How many times have I read to a group of children who exclaim with delight. “Look what I noticed” even after having that book read numerous times. “I notice and I wonder” inherent in them #g2great
A2 Barriers are Basal and computer reading programs b/c they take all class time with worksheets and excerpts of long texts. They use huge dollars and schools say no $ left for books. Also, there are educators who preach independent reading is unimportant. #g2great
A3: I like the idea of covering the covers. Mystery books, then let them discover and make connections without the title or cover. I might try that... #G2Great
A3: Share picture books across all grade levels, content areas, and experiences! Curiosity is the way we live our lives, so these powerful stories can mentor us wherever we are #g2great
A2) human narratives are powerful experiences when we can identify with characters & connect to situations. A class that has connected with a book's narrative will be empatheticly carrying the story further #G2Great
A3 Have students use words and ideas from each book to create next learning. Let them use the "artistic" process and sketch, try out, create, change, transform until they design their learning adventure. Just like reading is an adventure, create a learning journey. #g2great
A3 Wordless pbs are a great source for teaching. Ss can infer what is happening from pictures, learn dialogue by writing it for the books. Helps Ss expand their minds by articulating thoughts even though no words. #g2great
Q1: In order to create a culture of readers in your classroom, I believe using culturally relevant books allows the students to see themselves represented in books. This encourages them to read since they feel like they have something to relate to. #g2great#kellerliteracy
A3. Children love playing and teachers should use it as a form of teaching. Having the children choose a book and taking turns role playing the books is a way to fan the flames and get them completely involved in the books. #LitBankstreet#g2great
A3 It’s so important for these amazing picture books to live beyond the shared experience. Create celebratory displays for continued book savoring. #G2Great
Picture Books are not "intimidating" for children. They are welcoming and comfortable for every reader, new or old, to dive in and explore #G2Great#kellerliteracy
Q2: I think in state test taking grade levels we are so stressed and overwhelmed with performance that we lose sight of the importance of creating a “culture of readers” and we end up creating a “culture of great test takers” #kellerliteracy#G2Great
Peter's books help to create a language we can use together all year long. Not, "emerging." Not "proficient." Not "mastery." ISH. When a student is unsure of their own gift, I don't want them to say, "This is emerging at best." I want them to say, "This is ______-ISH." #g2great
A2: picture books get all of us talking. Sharing, thinking, exploring, and of course feeling connected to others. Conversation is key and picture books start the conversation. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A2 Barriers are Basal and computer reading programs b/c they take all class time with worksheets and excerpts of long texts. They use huge dollars and schools say no $ left for books. Also, there are educators who preach independent reading is unimportant. #g2great
A4. Collaborations could be done on a "sign up" basis. A book club group (gr, 3 and above) could choose a specific chapter book to retell as a picture book using a named author/illus. style. "Adapted from" - donate to other primary classroom.
#G2Great
Share pic books with older students who believe they are beyond pic books. Paper Bag Princess is one of my favs to share with mother/daughter combos in preparation for transition to middle school to foster a focus on Strong Female Characters #G2Great
A3: In order to fan the flames of reading and wonder, one must be aware of the "bellow." An open book BELOW the face of a mentor reader ignites and tends the flame with each turn of the page. This is the perfect triangle. A shared fire. One reader, two hands, one book. #g2great
#G2Great Great teachers know who to "activate" a story - turning a collection of words and images into a powerful experience that becomes the gift that keeps on giving! @tjshay did that with my book THE DOT. #DotDay was born in his classroom!
A2: picture books get all of us talking. Sharing, thinking, exploring, and of course feeling connected to others. Conversation is key and picture books start the conversation. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
Anything that usurps the time we need for what really matters (bringing kids and books together) should be considered suspect. It’s not our job to make basal publishers rich. It’s our kids to enrich the lives of kids with books! #G2Great
A2 Barriers are Basal and computer reading programs b/c they take all class time with worksheets and excerpts of long texts. They use huge dollars and schools say no $ left for books. Also, there are educators who preach independent reading is unimportant. #g2great
A4 Exploratory celebrations of picture book collaborations can inspire kids to create their own collaborations. Varied mentor text samples can feed these ventures. #G2Great
A3. Children love playing and teachers should use it as a form of teaching. Having the children choose a book and taking turns role playing the books is a way to fan the flames and get them completely involved in the books. #LitBankstreet#g2great
Q3:We must provide choices and provide opportunity for connection with community contexts as a way of creating meaningful school engagement & foster “generative pedagogies” & picture books can bridge this gap and spark lifelong connection in young readers.#G2Great#kellerliteracy
Picture books will always hold a special place in my heart. They warm my soul, much as I think of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. A read aloud becomes a safe heaven to explore so much in each of us
https://t.co/Nq1SbhAcoo#g2great
A3 Be vulnerable and share how reading or a specific book touched your life or someone dear to you. Reading together and being touched by a story creates an aura, a magic kingdom, where we are in awe, still, bound together by wonder, beauty, joy, sometimes sadness. #G2Great
Q2: I think in state test taking grade levels we are so stressed and overwhelmed with performance that we lose sight of the importance of creating a “culture of readers” and we end up creating a “culture of great test takers” #kellerliteracy#G2Great
#g2great A4: My Ss have started collaborating organically without my involvement. They create stories and sequels and spin offs. Workshop classroom lends itself to open collaboration.
A4 This year I have created amazing collaborations with kids across the world with picture books. Next year my HS students will equally create #globalcollaborations with picture books to deepen learning, create connections & have authentic learning journeys. #g2great
A3 Picture books make powerful writing mentors. Ask students to curious as writers: "How is this written?" "How can I try this craft?" PBs like The Word Collector invite us to notice words- being observant makes us more curious. #G2Great
A4 I did a evaluative writing “picture book award” and my students read different picture books and wrote about which ones fit inclusive criteria and powerful messages. Fun seeing the differing opinions. #G2Great
.@jcmcgahan31 our 5th grade at #ps234 reads this seminal book as part of their fantasy book clubs and then again at the beginning of their study on suffrage. It's an enduring classic. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
Share pic books with older students who believe they are beyond pic books. Paper Bag Princess is one of my favs to share with mother/daughter combos in preparation for transition to middle school to foster a focus on Strong Female Characters #G2Great
YES! And at homevread more than at bedtime. A book can be an appetizer or desert! Need to read aloud so much more in primary and intermediate grades. #g2great
A4: provide experiences for shared reading and writing. Let students plan and discuss with each other. What is a more authentic way to approach literacy instruction than through collaborative inquiry? #g2great
A3 I also LOVE pbs for teaching literary essay! And, let’s not forget that there are those pbs that blindside us and we cry not realizing we will. So much emotion in such sparse writing- an art form. #g2great
A4: An example from the other day in #Room407. Our students have started to read Bobbie Anne Mason's IN COUNTRY. We open the reading of this novel with a share of Eve Bunting's THE WALL. It helps to launch us into start of the novel and puts us all in a reading "place." #g2great
A2: picture books get all of us talking. Sharing, thinking, exploring, and of course feeling connected to others. Conversation is key and picture books start the conversation. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
@DrMaryHoward remember that point I had about grouping? Any chance I could bring it up somehow in front of your principal or someone you know? Don't want my complaint falling on deaf ears here #G2great
A4 I think it’s key to include Peter-Susan collaborations as well their personal endeavors. How do those vary when they are collaborators vs individuals? #G2Great
A4 I'm going to have my 6th graders create informative books on the human body and childhood diseases. Then they will share their book with a 1st or 2nd grade class #g2great
#G2Great Students’ stories matter!!! They love when we don’t give them boundaries and allow them to create freely and bravely!!! Their own stories will keep learning student-centered and their passions alive!!! @HighlandGaston
I love all the inspiration flowing tonight from our #G2Great chat! Keep it flowing. : ) Never too late to join in if you love picture books and their magic.
A3 When teachers treat picture books like gold (because they ARE gold!!) students can't resist! Fill your classrooms with picture books. Make them accessible to every reader. Let children see, touch, read, act out, interpret, share, discuss, & ENJOY daily! #G2Great
YES! And at homevread more than at bedtime. A book can be an appetizer or desert! Need to read aloud so much more in primary and intermediate grades. #g2great
Great point, @JimmyCr83638135 good learning hinges on joy. Children are natural playmates and storymakers. We do need to fan the flames of this booklove. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A3. Children love playing and teachers should use it as a form of teaching. Having the children choose a book and taking turns role playing the books is a way to fan the flames and get them completely involved in the books. #LitBankstreet#g2great

A4: After a read aloud and class conversation, students will sometimes make predictions about what happened before or after the picture book. Letting students collaborate on a prequel or sequel based off a mentor text. #G2Great
A2: picture books get all of us talking. Sharing, thinking, exploring, and of course feeling connected to others. Conversation is key and picture books start the conversation. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A4- This is great to give out to new entrants when they are indoctrinated into a New Entrants Club.... build's a feeling of membership at an otherwise lonely time in life and fosters dialogue about being yourself #G2Great
A4: Students paired up in writing partnerships or organized by interest groups can serve as great collaborators and/or co-authors. Always remind readers and writers that we are better together. #G2Great
A4 Just as we invite kids to form book club collaborations, we can invite them to form writing collaborations & bring collective thinking to life within a shared process. #G2Great
#g2great A4 My grade 2 Ss in publishing company started to collaborate on their own. They have become a community of writers and storytellers, supporting each other. Always looking to mentors for inspiration.
A3 When teachers treat picture books like gold (because they ARE gold!!) students can't resist! Fill your classrooms with picture books. Make them accessible to every reader. Let children see, touch, read, act out, interpret, share, discuss, & ENJOY daily! #G2Great
This is who I want to be... a "story activist!" I secretly read to a special 2nd grade class each week... They light up each time I come in with a new picture book. It is not me, it is the continued stream of wonderful literature! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A5. Look for:
Author's message,
Inviting story line,
Picture yourself in this book,
Details in pictures draw the Rdr in,
Intriguing words, and
Interesting sentences!
#G2Great
.@StephHazelkorn those are all great choices. I don't know "Peanut Butter and Cupcake." Bring it to class next week? How about "Dog and Bear," "Miss Rumphius," and the aforementioned "Paperbag Princess." #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A2: picture books get all of us talking. Sharing, thinking, exploring, and of course feeling connected to others. Conversation is key and picture books start the conversation. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
Glad I'm not alone :) Now playing on repeat! We love playing this song during storytime. So amazing for you to collaborate on this video, too! #G2Great
A5 Great picture books have an invisible thread connecting words & images, I love it when both work in tandem to breathe life into the story in a shared vision. #G2Great
A4 I did a evaluative writing “picture book award” and my students read different picture books and wrote about which ones fit inclusive criteria and powerful messages. Fun seeing the differing opinions. #G2Great
A4 Just as we invite kids to form book club collaborations, we can invite them to form writing collaborations & bring collective thinking to life within a shared process. #G2Great
#G2great When students spread the "I Am Peace" message .... check out these student-designed "I Am Peace" bracelets worn by the guys in Engine 275, Ladder 133 in South Jamaica, NY!

The books I write & collaborate on are inspired by big themes that I want to world to tune into. Here's a peek at a few. I rely on educators to explore these big ideas with their students. #G2Great
A5: Space for the reader to make the book come to life: white space, glorious page turns, respect for the child reader, questions that may not be answered #g2great
A5 I always look for the lesson or how the story is tied to the heart. We need to learn and teach with heart, so I try to choose stories that will awaken inspiration. When joy and laughter can be added, it is an amazing bonus. My next reading collaboration will be EPIC! #g2great

A5: I look for author’s message, diverse perspectives, rich language, craft moves, and the goosebumps test. If it gives me goosebumps, it’s a keeper. Unfortunately for my wallet I get goosebumps a lot. #G2Great
A5: Does the book make me think about things in a different way? Do I stop thinking about all the other noise and distractions and just get lost in this story? #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A4 Often one writes and then illustrates, I wonder if pairing a Sts who loves drawing with a st who enjoys writing. The writer can work with the artist to give text to the illustrations. #G2Great
#g2great A5: Picture books I love are ones that swell my heart and make me feel something hopeful. I can be an artist. I can be a difference maker. I can be anything!
#G2Great Simple stories with big messages!!! Relatable tales that readers can easily connect with no matter their age, gender, background, or anything in between!!! @HighlandGaston
A3-When we show our excitement & enthusiasm for a story, our Ss grow curious & excited about the story & it ignites their desire to read. Having books in Ss 1st language, highlighting "good reads", and providing books related to our Ss interests all feed their curiosity. #g2great
A2: Our curiosity took hold w/ "The Water Princess" on #WorldWaterDay. Struck by gorgeous Gie Gie, but concerned by her daily plight. When 1st grdrs saw photos at the back & heard the rest of the story, they were full of ?s, rampant w/ curiosity! Lots of ideas coming... #G2great
A3: Create a classroom environment that nurtures curiosity. Encourage exploration and wonder. Model how to ask questions, especially ones you don't know the answer to.🤩🤔 #G2great
A5: When choosing a PB, I take into consideration the personality of the students, as well as the writing and pictures. You have to know the reader and how they will be touched by the work. The PB must be able to connect with the reader. #g2great
A5: I always choose a book that I love and think Ss will love. It needs to have beautiful, playful or clever language, characters who we can relate to & root for, and a message that makes us think. A good PB should stick with you long after its read or reread it. #G2Great
A5: Engaging illustrations, plot, text, and characters; the opportunity for the reader to relate/connect; and a global lesson in some form or fashion. #G2great

A5 Words and pictures can’t tell two different stories. I find it amazing that authors & illustrators often never meet & yet somehow their thinking merges into one. #G2Great
A5: images first, unique or beautiful or better yet both. Those are hooks. Once hooked the message can sink in. Jerome throwing his words to the wind. That image I gasped in the car. No lie. That is the power I am old and gasped. Lol #g2great

a5: I am working with a teacher now who has students “watch for stories” at recess, in the library, and everywhere they go. They talk about what they see. #g2great
A4:My hallway is 2nd and 3rd grades. We collaborated on a mock Caldecott campaign and are doing march book madness right now. My Ss participate in GRA each year. #G2Great
A5 Some PBs are magic! They have something that is undefinable and hard to explain- a “magic” ingredient. Like some people you meet who are magic, I feel some books are like this bc books are my friends! #g2great
A5- This book developes understanding of perspective in even the very youngest of children. Every time I read it, they ask fantastic questions and demonstrate signs of empathy through their questions #G2Great
.@ShelfieTalk Isn't amazing that pictures books somehow invite us to try to write in a stronger, more engaging and beautiful way? They are powerful mentors for all ages. #G2Great#LitBankStreet@scds
A3 Picture books make powerful writing mentors. Ask students to be curious as writers: "How is this written?" "How can I try this craft?" PBs like The Word Collector invite us to notice words- being observant makes us more curious. #G2Great
#g2great A5 The characters and their motivations. So much conversation when Ss can relate to the character. Also, I love when the Ss can't take their eyes away from the illustrations.
A5 I look for a story with emotion. I want my kids to "feel" the story. We might roll over laughing or shed a tear, but when kids can feel a story, they are hooked. That sparks collective curiosity. #G2Great
You said it, Margaret. There are just some books that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand or your eyes well with tear or even laugh out loud that you think you need to share with your Ss & the entire world #G2great
#g2great A5: Picture books I love are ones that swell my heart and make me feel something hopeful. I can be an artist. I can be a difference maker. I can be anything!
One of the qualities of a picture book is when there are multiple interpretations. It will get the attention of more children in that manner. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
A5 I often look for books that resonate with me, even as an adult. I look at big picture meanings in the story. Books that bring out the questions, more than have answers #G2Great
Yes it seems counterintuitive. I have been fortunate to know @peterhreynolds. However, illustrators seem to figure it out intuitively...just like kids. #G2Great

Something that @SylviaVardell did for THE POETRY FRIDAY ANTHOLOGY FOR CELEBRATIONS: she paired each of the 156 poems w/a picture book recommendation. That's another great way to share picture books—with poems! #g2great
A5 The FIRST quality of a great picture book is that it touches the heart & makes us FEEL something. One picture book can awaken different emotions with each telling. #G2Great
A5: I'm often looking for that "ladder" (@ProfessorNana) to the big idea our shared work is presenting to us. An example of this might be a reading of Yansook Choi's THE NAME JAR right before Act IV of THE CRUCIBLE. Vetting out importance of our names and what they mean. #g2great
A4: I think any age can benefit from using picture books to collaboratively explore and feel their way through the many tough topics that exist today. Picture books are a non-threatening, universal invitation to participate in discussions. #G2Great
A5 Great picture books have an invisible thread connecting words & images, I love it when both work in tandem to breathe life into the story in a shared vision. #G2Great

#G2Great A3 I admit the illustrations are what capture my attention & the story they alone can tell but when the authors words challenge & inspire it’s like being under a spell...I’m hooked! I replay it over and over in my mind viewing it from different points of view

A7: Picture books invite striving readers to get lost in an enjoyable reading experience, showing them what is possible for their own reading lives. They spark wonder & invite engagement in a community of readers, hopefully transferred to their own independent reading. #g2great
A7 In every possible way! In a well written/illustrated picture book, pictures offer an inroad to meaning making. Images can bring the words to life! #G2Great

A4: My tips for Ss collaboration came from watching my colleague's Ss collaborate! When we saw partners sharing their pieces & talking abt their negotiated decisions (& real partnerships of authors/illustrators), we were inspired to try it ourselves! #G2great (1 S drew, 1 wrote!)
A7 There is so much in a picture book! Striving learners can still "read" the story through the illustrations. They can still feel the story and once they are hooked, they will push themselves to do more. #G2Great

A7: Picture books are less overwhelming as texts for reluctant readers. There’s so much rich conversation that comes from noticing details in the pictures themselves. They help kids become readers, not test-takers. #G2Great
It only takes one great book, one great character to make a connection and start a spark to love reading. We just have to find “that one” for our striving readers. #G2Great
From early on, children often rely on the prompt "use the picture clues" to decode. What if we revise so children "use the pictures" to understand - connect - think - reflect #G2Great
A7: I encourage all students including my striving readers to search more widely in the library, to know the joy and opportunities with picture books. It is part of wide reading and always an open invitation to all readers. #G2Great
A7 Picture books allow striving readers to learn how to develop a love of reading. They learn the pleasure of reading that hopefully pushes them forward to grow as readers.#g2great
I love @DollyParton’s Imagination Library (@dollyslibrary)! We have benefitted from her free picture books delivered by name to my kiddos since birth. So many wonderful titles! #g2great
A7 We can and should be explicit about images, using them to analyze meaning and support the print. This is a powerful scaffold kids can use on their own. #G2Great
Couldn't agree more. The visuals are a warm invitation to everyone regardless of their language. Pictures are meant to be shared. #G2Great#LitBankstreet

@tjshay
#g2great A7: Pair PBs with middle grade novels to create a character to character connection or study a time period. This idea just popped in my head. I need help developing it. @PaulWHankins?
A7: Rereading of “faves”, verbalizing our own text-to-self and text-to-world connections, book talks, make reading them the center of every school day, and by declaring a call to action to do a kind deed or develop a project based on a great book’s message. #G2Great
#G2Great As a high school teacher, I find that using picture books is a non-threatening way to go back to the basics. Allowing for the sometimes nostalgic memories of picture books invites the return of creativity and allows learning to be pushed in new and amazing ways!!!
A7: And that character could also be you/us as the educators sharing that powerful story that means so much to child, to help them see themselves in world of reading #G2Great
A8. PB can level the playing field for all students. Every content unit should have some PB. Perfect intro of content, raise ? for research and spark curiosity to learn more about the topic (NEVER just to answer T questions)!

A7: For older readers, just when you think a picture book cannot do that, someone reads you CRY HEART BUT NEVER BREAK before the final installment of TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE or THE SCAR to discuss the archetype of "the unhealable wound" or SMALL THINGS to introduce anxiety. #g2great
A7- We pair our reading of picture books with emotion rocks- students pass around the basket and try to imagine what the character might be feeling as we read #g2great
A7:immersing Ss in books and reading experiences is a developmentally appropriate way to engage all learners. Provides multiple entry points for all. #G2Great
A6: Malala's Magic Pencil, Ada Twist, Scientist, The Dot, Iggy Peck, Architect, Rosie Revere, Engineer, The Word Collector, Love, I could go on for days! #G2Great
In middle school I am able to read all sorts of text with no judgements. Ss are enamored w/pictures & love a read aloud. PB are entry points for conversations about themes, historical context, craft #g2great
Cheering on all creative educators who help discover each child's unique story... picture books/books are often the key to that understanding. #G2Great
A8: Picture books foster connection and community, something that is needed at every age. We learn from the text, from the perspectives discussed and from our own connections, building empathy and understanding that can potentially change the world. #g2great
A8 I am astounded at the depth of meaning in books across all content areas & grades. We cheat kids when we deprive them of these rich experiences. #G2Great
I tell my students that we can "read" books in a number of ways--the first being reading the pictures. Everyone can access a book through the pictures and gain plenty of information to get hooked and engaged. #g2great
A8 Stories are an incredible and powerful way to learn any content. Anytime we can make this connection and use it, we make learning more meaningful for students. Strive to bring more stories into your classrooms at all levels to awaken more imagination & love. #g2great

Picture Books
Beginning Chapter Books at several levels,

A7: I'm just gonna leave this here: Comics are picture books via @HornBook. Same enthusiasm, curiosity, engagement, and call for choice & access applies. https://t.co/lKcXQhmSME#g2great
A7. So often a PB opens the door to reading and listening in a safe environment without pressure to read. But it gets Ss hooked. Especially when they can make a connection to a character or problem that speaks to them personally. #g2great
Also, this reminds me of something @teachkate said on her recent #G2Great appearance, we have to have all of our instructional tools on the table. (paraphrasing but it's pretty close).
A8: Short-Sweet-Powerful They give kids chances to get deep in a text that they can access and they give "bigger" kids a chance to forget they are bigger. It is so important. #G2Great
A7 Picture walks, book talks, turn & talk, read aloud, to-with-by, word collecting from the book you are reading. Just enjoying it. Kids love to be read to. When they are listening to a story they love , they will be motivated to want to read those words too. #g2great
I ordered these but they could easily be made - and my students have since contributed their own versions with more nuanced emotions. We use them all the time- to share how we're doing or check in with one another. Students now seek them out on their own #g2great
A8: Picture books are great for all ages because we can all see ourselves when we read the book. There's a meaningful connection to the story. #G2Great#LitBankstreet
