A1 #caschat theres a retirement if both but geeks are cool niw, arent they. I think the more physical computing opportunities we can give at Primary level, the cooler and more inclusive things will become

A1) CS certainly at Primary is seen as a subject for all, girls get involved as much as boys - I guess the challenge is maintaining this as they get older we need more girls in computing #caschat

  • scottturneruon Oct 2 @ 3:11 PM EDT
A1. At HE level it is unclear but, totally unstatistically based on my classes today, we might be seeing a slight improvement in the male:female student ratio but if it is v slight. #caschat
  • martincaddy Oct 2 @ 3:11 PM EDT
I think the problem with teachers some times is not feeling the subject is geeky but a lack of confidence in subject knowledge build this and it will really help #caschat

  • MrsLMJ Oct 2 @ 3:14 PM EDT
A1 my #CodeClub is massively oversubscribed. All girls except for 1 boy. But then I suppose I’m a girl teaching CS across KS1&2 so girls are expected to excel 🤷🏼‍♀️ #caschat

Q2. What approaches have you taken to make Computer Science ‘cool’? And is ‘cool’ the right word? (I’m fast approaching 50 years of age…) #CASChat
  • teknoteacher Oct 2 @ 3:16 PM EDT
#CASCHAT A1 The trick is catching them young. It's a much greater challenge trying to change those perceptions in teen years.

    Hi Donna @DdR333 #caschat
  • martincaddy Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
It could be something to do with linking it into the tech we use every day ie building apps. Girls use apps as much as the boys so that could be capitalised on. #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon, @zoewrightedu
  • sneekylinux Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
A1 as for CS being perceived as not cool 3 of my code clubs are at around 25-30 but these are all primary. #caschat
  • hardistymark Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
I'd like to be a geek with my own self-landing space rockets ..... #caschat

A1. Fun activities like #HourOfCodehave helped many students, teachers & parents realise that coding is not for geeks only. In fact, most students in my coding club want to continue coding and don’t want to go home. #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
Experience has shown me that having a female role model has a definite positive impact on the uptake of girls taking up STEM related subjects! #caschat
    In reply to @ForrisHilier
  • missedabracket Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT
A1 We have all male classes in 4 year groups. This changed this year in Y9 to 20 boys & 10 girls. I think this is mainly down to #cyberFirstGirls event last year. I hope to involve former sixth form females, to inspire next years girls #caschat
  • amazingict Oct 2 @ 3:17 PM EDT

A1b. Also have a good balance of girls & boys, but sometimes, more girls than boys. #caschat

    In reply to @CCCC_9999
  • zoewrightedu Oct 2 @ 3:19 PM EDT
Oftentimes I see teachers only asking the male students for help when it comes to difficulties with technology, they should ask girls too so that everyone is involved! #caschat

never sure on this one. We have lots of female science teachers but struggle to get girls to take the subjects at higher levels. They are direct role models, or are you thinking within general culture? I'd agree with that - there's more a cultural lack of visibility #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon, @ForrisHilier
  • martincaddy Oct 2 @ 3:19 PM EDT
A2) Content is king find themes the children like, link to the tech they find cool, even just using the word app can help!! #caschat

#CASChat A2 Allowing students a high degree of autonomy over what they choose to create and how. This makes a big difference, as opposed to “ok, everyone, follow this coding worksheet to build this game so it looks like everyone else’s”
  • BradleyDardis Oct 2 @ 3:20 PM EDT
A2: Cool is not the word I would use, I think we need to think about about we can make computing science 'relevant ' to the needs of our students, if they see a need for CS they will want to use/understand it more #caschat

Q1 Perceptions and what I think are two different things however, I think the media ( e.g. films like Hidden Figures, Imitation Game etc.) can influence. At ground level, computing is a subject for all. The maker community demonstrate that very well. #caschat
    • OkComputing Oct 2 @ 3:05 PM EDT
Q1. How is Computer Science as a subject perceived? Is it still ‘only for geeks’ or even worse, only for boys? #CASChat

    In reply to @OkComputing
  • ForrisHilier Oct 2 @ 3:23 PM EDT
But maybe that's where the issue is, there needs to be more creativity (ie. making) in CS #caschat
    In reply to @chris_swan
  • dmount28 Oct 2 @ 3:23 PM EDT
A2 - I think computing is the hook, and children are naturally drawn towards any extra clubs etc. The challenge I find is making it relevant, and giving children experiences they can devleop themselves at home or share with their peers #caschat
  • CazMinty Oct 2 @ 3:23 PM EDT

A2: I used to teach the basics at the beginning using console applications. Maybe in hindsight that wasn't such a good idea. My issue was that GUI apps would mean that they would get caught up with design vs functionality. #caschat
