#musedchat Archive
Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

It's time for . Our topic tonight: What are the biggest issues facing our profession today? Be sure to introduce yourself!
-
Last day of Easter Break! Back2School tomorrow! Phyllis from Louisiana. 5th Grade Choir & 7th/8th Grade Piano Class
-
Good to see you Phyllis. Hope it was a good Easter break. 1st day of spring break for me!
-
-
Hey Brad, welcome to the chat!
-
Sue k-4 gen music and chorus from Long Island, NY
-
Hi Sue, good evening and welcome to you
-
George from IL. 5-6 band/6-8 jazz band
-
Hi George, hope you're doing well. Welcome
-
Q1: What are the most pressing issues (local or national) you see in music education today?
-
A1: helping people understand we don’t just sing songs and “have fun”
-
Overuse of stand tests, competition for s time. Unpopular opinion, but I feel competition in music has hurt us a lot more
-
Anthony from CA. First time I remembered to check in at the correct time!
-
Great to see you, Anthony
-
A1: Music (& other electives) are not viewed as important as the "core" subjects
-
A1 Overuse of stand tests, competition for s time. Unpopular opinion, but I feel competition in music has hurt us a lot more
-
Agree with you on the competition aspect. Not everything needs to be a contest.
-
A1: I think one of the most serious issues is the overemphasis on taking AP classes and STEM classes at expense of the arts.
-
Absolutely. So much of this seems to come from people who only see the final product, and not the process
-
A1: T evals are concerning. So many states eval. music Ts based on subjects/students they don't teach
-
this is coming to us in NY soon. Even “core” subject teachers will be rates on HS regents scores
-
It's really concerning that anybody could think this is a good way to evaluate teachers
-
I still need to do some more reading on Danielson. Lots of schools around us use it.
-
Q2: brought up the emphasis on STEM/AP classes. Is there a good way for Ss to balance those courses w/ the arts?
-
I try to get out ahead of the AP.Make sure s know what AP is supposed to be and how/if it will help in coI. I also teach an AP :)
-
Working with scheduling also helps. In constant communication with our AP who makes the schedule
-
hesaplama: Aracınızın kilometre başına ne kadar yakıt harcadığınızı öğrenmeniz için pratik bir https://t.co/j2pa4ze1ju
-
How many periods/day at your school?
-
A2: Our HS went to a 7hr day last year so Ss could have more flexibility w/ scheduling. So far, so good.
-
Can you share some specific accommodations you've made?
-
allowing Ss to still perform if they can't fit daily class in. They come down during another class once in a while
-
our MB is extra cir. And requires concert band participation. I'll allow Ss to march who have sched probs
-
sorry a little late Antoine here from Woodbridge Ontario Canada. What did I miss?
-
Nice! Were other teachers pretty receptive to this?
-
in my dist. AP will win out every time if I make them choose. Have to be flexible and bend sometimes
-
Hey Antoine. Q2: Big emphasis on STEM/AP classes. Is there a good way for Ss to balance those courses w/ the arts?
-
A little flexibility on our part goes a long way. Same thing in my district w/ sports.
-
A2 when it comes to scheduling classes that a balance is given to all subject
-
A2: my MS Ss start earning HS credits in 7th Grade allowing access to more classes in HS
-
I try not to abuse it or use it a lot. Sometimes the Ss experience is more important than the end product in my mind
-
same here. AP and sports.
-
On behalf of policymakers in emerging professions.
-
Q3: Another big issue is the devaluing of our profession. How do we better get the 'music is important' message to the public?
-
doesn't work well in my dist because of busing. Great idea though!
-
We had a zero hour jazz band when I was in HS, worked well. But we didn't have to worry about buses
-
A3 can't control what the public thinks. U can control what ur kids perceive. Do a GREAT job & the test will take care of itself
-
A3:our Ss are our biggest salespeople. Successful Ss are the loudest advocates we have. Use them
-
A3: I feel as music educators we need 2 stop trying 2 justify it to the public. Please read this article https://t.co/iFZMF5RJq7
-
Some of the negative perception can even come from co-workers, though. Problematic if they see music as inferior
-
That guy's blog is great. And I agree, we should justify music on its own merits, not how it supports other stuff
-
at that point throw up ur hands. But kids see it and usually side with music
