Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
My Aunt was teacher. She was the only person I knew who paid for purchases with a credit card. I equated her job with that as a kid. - Teaching or the path to a credit card, focused me until other reasons to be a teacher appeared #LATICchat
A1) My mom was a teacher, but it wasn't until I volunteered in a Philadelphia classroom to teach economics that I fell in love with teaching. #LATICchat
A2-Make school a truly safe place. It should be a place that Ss feel safe to challenge, make mistakes, question, etc. because it may be the only safe place they have. #LATICchat
Q3Exit tickets are worth the time. Attendance questions are fun and great for class culture. Spend time in Twitter/ Pintrest and teachers pay teachers are great to help steady a rookie #LATICchat
A3. Asking students to show you with a thumbs up/down at their chest (sometimes out of the view of others) can be powerful. Most Ss will be very honest. #LATICchat
A3: A favorite temperature gauge #formativeassessment is a tweet out the door. T had each S "tweet" on a note card tacked to the door a key learning outcome. Requires synthesis and precise language. Also see this resource for more ideas: https://t.co/9e9Mgxp7B7#LATICchat
A5. I love self reflection opportunities for students and adults! This year, we are implementing school-wide community meetings that are great for getting students to reflect on where they are on the GSR. I love seeing students strive to reach the expert level! #LATICchat
A5-The Great Student Rubric will help students exhibit the behaviors that will make them successful in a more student-centered classroom environment.

A6: How about something as simple as a Resource Table from day one of school? Ss take what they need instead of T being the one to distribute and control all learning materials? #FerryToBridge#LATICchat
A6-Create structures that allow all students to achieve based on their differences. This structure is a scaffold for learning. https://t.co/MwwyjCrPmx#LATICchat
A6 I love this quote...."Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do." I always share this with my students. I think that it is beneficial for teachers to remember this about our students. Raise the bar and encourage/motivate/challenge the Ss to reach it. #LATICchat
A7: I love this book! I always read it to my Ss. It has such a powerful message for children and adults alike. For new teachers, I think it is a great reminder of the amazing impact you can have on the lives of the Ss you teach everyday! #LATICchat
A8) How you set up your classroom sends a moral message ... if you position yourself so you can always see your students you are telling them you don’t trust them. #LATICchat
A8-Create spaces that serve different purposes to address different learning opportunities. Have a quite reading area, a partner desk area, table for group work, etc. #LATICchat
A8: I would definitely say that organization is key. Clutter is not good for the brain or for classrooms. :) Make the resources that Ss need easily accessible and make sure that the classroom is welcoming and comfortable! #LATICchat
